About the author

Katy Varley is a debut novelist from the Northeast of England, and a little town famously built at the end of Hadrian’s Wall. A Geordie through and through, she is a single mother to three sons, one teenager and two now adults, and shares her home with two cockapoos and a very opinionated Russian cat.

After nearly two decades working within the NHS, and as a frontline paramedic, Katy began writing during a period of illness that left her unable to work. What started as therapy became storytelling; a way of exploring the raw, complicated and often unspoken realities of survival, identity, grief, resilience and the lives people build while carrying invisible weight.

Her experiences in frontline healthcare, motherhood, divorce, and raising a neurodivergent child have shaped her writing, bringing honesty, dark humour and emotional realism to the page. Katy is drawn to stories about ordinary people navigating extraordinary pressures, and the quiet ways life changes us.

The Thin Green Wedge is her debut novel. A sequel continuing Lucy Whiteheart’s story is already in progress.

The Thin Green Wedge is a book that feels incredibly personal. Katy Varley writes in such a natural, chatty style that at times I had to remind myself that this is fiction. There’s an almost autobiographical quality to Lucy’s story; her voice is convincing and often very funny, even when life is anything but.

Lucy Whiteheart is a frontline paramedic, a single mum and everyone expects her to cope. She deals with emergencies, difficult shifts and all the unknowns of ambulance work whilst also attempting to keep her own family life on track. The author does an excellent job of showing how exhausting it can be to continually be the capable one, especially when nobody thinks to ask whether that capable person might be struggling too.

The ambulance scenes bring plenty of drama, but this isn’t just a novel about the emergency services. Lucy’s life away from work is just as important, and the mixture of motherhood, friendships, relationships and everyday domestic chaos gives the story real warmth. There’s humour too, sometimes quite dark, and the banter between colleagues feels very authentic.

It’s a long book, very long, and I do think it could have benefited from a stricter edit. There are places where the narrative wanders and some scenes could have been shorter without losing anything important, and may have made some of the emotional moments hit harder.

However, Lucy is great fun and it’s very easy to become immersed in her world. The Thin Green Wedge is warm, messy, funny and often very moving. It's really human story about what happens when someone who spends her life looking after everyone else finally has to consider herself.

Being related to a North East paramedic, I read this with interest. Many of the scenarios described in the book reflect stories I’ve heard, so it felt very realistic. The story is written in the form of an autobiography but the author notes it’s entirely fictional. I find that hard to believe as Lucy’s story sounds so real, which is testament to the quality of the writing. I loved many of the other characters Lucy works alongside and liked the descriptions of jobs they attended. It’s a great mixture of work related stuff, alongside family dramas and the reality of life as a working, single mum. The only negative is the length of the book; it is LONG!

Hi I have just finished a book called The Thin Green Wedge by Katy Varley.its a brilliant book it made me laugh outloud smile and cry.its about Lucy I've been blue lighted to hospital at least 3 times and I think paramedics are angels from heaven and they saved my life more than once.
If you like to read you will love this book. It's bloody brilliant.

Real

This book shows life at its most real. A working single mum and all of the worries, that comes with that, then the reality of being a paramedic dealing with the most vulnerable of people. It’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking and seeing words in print that you can relate to.
