Walker Adams was supposed to follow in his lawyer father’s footsteps, but instead he’s training to be an MMA fighter. But she’s engaged to the fight match-maker who holds Walker’s career in his hands…

Gracie had almost convinced herself that she’d put her silly childhood crush on Walker to rest. And as old sparks turn to flames, Gracie is forced to decide between the future she thought she wanted or the man she’s never stopped loving…

Breaking Her Rules is the first book in a new series, Beyond The Cage, by Jennifer Snow.

Walker Adams tried doing things his father’s way. He was one semester away from graduating from law school. But he walked away from it to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming an MMA fighter. He had been sleeping in his car since his father withdrew all support so his little sister talked her best friend into letting Walker sleep on her couch in Las Vegas for a few weeks until he could get on his feet.

Gracie Andrews grew up with her best friend Kylie and her older brother, Walker. She had a huge crush on Walker all throughout their childhood but kept her feelings hidden from him. She was always envious of the life Kylie and Walker had, a nice house, everything they needed at their fingertips. It was so different from her life. She was alone with her Mom who worked long hours to support her. Her Mom changed boyfriends frequently, falling in love at the drop of a hat, constantly getting her heart broken. After Gracie finished high school and left town, she vowed to have a different life for herself. Now at twenty six, she had a great job promoting MMA fights, a great boyfriend that offered her all the stability she needed. Even though emotionally he was unavailable. The job always came first. Gracie fit in where there was room. But having a stable life was more important than love, right? It’s what she needed.

“How could time and maturity not have erased these persistent, unhealthy feelings she had for her best friend’s brother?
Nope, time and maturity had done nothing but increase the intensity of these unwanted feelings.”

description

As soon as Walker walked back into Gracie’s life, everything was in turmoil. She began to question everything, her feelings for her boyfriend, what was really important. Walker can’t believe he never knew how Gracie felt about him back when they were kids. But he knows now. And his feelings for her are growing every day. He knows they could be epic together, if he could only convince her to take a chance on him.

Walker has three weeks to prepare for the biggest fight of his career, to finally make a name for himself and prove to his father that this is what he was meant to do. But is he giving everything he has to his training? Or is he distracted by the feelings that are developing between he and Gracie? Does he even have a chance against a seasoned fighter? Or has everything he has done to prepare for this moment in his life all to be for nothing?

Fighting for Flight (Fighting, #1) by J.B. Salsbury — Reviews ...

This is a perfect start to a fantastic series for Jennifer Snow. I really love the Brookhollow series but this one is so different. The characters were perfect, so easy to relate to and to love. You couldn’t help but to get angry with their bad decisions and root for them when they finally got it right. And of course the epic fight scene was perfect. I really did love this one and look forward to the next book in the series, Fighting the Fall, due out next October.

I'm a huge fan of fighter romances and thought this one would be right up my alley. In truth, I was really enjoying it until I got to 34% and Walker started flirting with another chick to make Grace jealous. Ugh! Why?!?!

After that I started skimming in hopes that it would be a quick, okay I flirted, you got jealous, and now I'm done type of thing but no... He continued to "date" said other woman while Grace stayed with her boyfriend whom she didn't even love.

They finally got their heads out of their asses around 80% but by that point I was so over it. I did give this one two stars for the simple fact that I was really enjoying the beginning, the writing was good, and well, I have to give it to the underdog for the ending... But this definitely isn't something I'll be re-reading anytime soon.

A sweet, angsty and sexy story wrapped up in the exciting world of MMA.
“All I see is you, Gracie. Just you. When I’m awake, you’re on my mind. When I’m sleeping, it’s you I dream about. And knowing I can’t be with you is driving me crazy”

Can a man live happily trying to live up to expectations that are not his own? Walker Adams had thought continuing the tradition of being a lawyer like his father would be fine, but two semesters away from a law degree he left it to pursue his dream of being an MMA fighter. Without his father’s approval and support he’s left no choice but to accept his little sister’s best friend’s help. Which includes a bartending job, a couch and a set of rules while living with her for the few weeks before she moves in with her boyfriend. She should have included a no flirting rule, because not only is she the matchmaker’s girlfriend, she’s all grown up and resisting her is beyond impossible. Can he convince her to take a chance on him?
“All he wanted to do was kiss her and tell her how he was feeling about her, reassure her she could have fifty years with someone whose love would never fade, if she let go and took a chance.”

Grace Andrews grew up without any sense of security that never allowed her to believe love ever after of the fairytale kind. Determined to never feel this lack of stability again she’s made a good life for herself. She has a successful career doing what she loves and is good at and has a perfect on paper boyfriend. The small detail that there’s barely a spark between them and that she’s at the bottom of his priority list is secondary to fact that he’s a safe bet and can provide that stable future she’s always wanted. Unlike the down on his luck man who has crashed her sofa, needs a job, a coach, a manager, because he left his secure career path in the pursuit of his own goals. A man who had never looked at her beyond being his sister’s standoffish friend. The man who she’s always secretly loved. Can Gracie abandon her fears and see that there are risks worth taking?
“How could time and maturity not have erased these persistent, unhealthy feelings she had for her best friend’s brother? Nope, time and maturity had done nothing but increase the intensity of these unwanted feelings.”

The chemistry between Gracie and Walker is apparent from the very start and I enjoyed their flirty back and forth. It was especially fun to see how much Grace fought their attraction. I did however feel it went on a bit too long and I was irked with her by how much she was willing to give, undervalue her self-worth up and settle for so much less.
“From the outside looking in—surely it looked like she was being stood up on a first date. In actuality, it was worse. She was being stood up by her boyfriend on her birthday.”

Especially when Walker was completely convinced that they could be great together and didn’t shy away from proving this over and over to the point of neglecting his training and putting his barely existing MMA career at risk for them. But they eventually get it right and those sparks create delicious fireworks perfectly fit for their Las Vegas home.

I admired Grace’s strength although it was sad it came from a less than ideal childhood and made her take a side trip through a safe yet undeserving path. Walker completely charmed me with his sexy, fun boyish personality who wore his feelings on his sleeve from the very start. The story had all the elements of sweet and sexy romance with the excitement of MMA fighting and training skilfully interweaved.

Breaking Her Rules is book #1 in the Beyond the Cage series by Jennifer Snow. Told from both point of view and a happy ending. It can be read as a standalone.

A love story or an MMA book? With Walker Adams as the lead character, who cares? OMG, Jennifer Snow outdid herself with Walker. Unfortunately, Grace just came off as wishy-washy at best and unbearable at her worst.

Walker ... hot, sexy, funny. Boy, did his sense of humor come through right from the beginning of the story. He dropped out of law school to follow his dream against the wishes of his father. The bright spot? Gracie. She sure wasn't what he remembered her to be and, as he learns more about the Gracie of today and how she felt growing up, he can't help but fall in love with her.
But, how does he let her know without ruining his chances of living his dream?
Grace. I really don't know what to say about her. She's with a man that she doesn't love, is ready to make a commitment to him just because her mother didn't give her the stability that she craved growing up. Should she move in with Erik or shouldn't she? Should she marry him or shouldn't she? Should she give into her feelings for Walker or shouldn't she? I just wanted her to make a decision and, when she did, I was kind of hoping that Walker turned her down! Isn't that terrible of me? But, it worked. She made Walker work for her and she had had Erik on the ropes. Maybe she was smarter that I thought she was.

But, it was definitely Walker that kept me invested in this book ... then there was Tyson. I really, really hope Jennifer Snow gives us a book about Tyson. I would love to find out what makes that man tick and the kind of woman that will bring him to the mat. Erik, Maria, Faith, Kylie ... they all rounded out this story and made it a little more interesting. She made the book fun with the banter between Walker and Gracie and really had me sitting on the edge of my seat as Walker started making his moves.

Breaking Her Rules was a fun, interesting read and Jennifer Snow really made this storyline work with the way she mixed the seriousness with the fun, the MMA with the strip club. Her characters were written with flare and style and really made this story the wonderful read that it was.

Brilliant friends to lovers story

Gracie had the best friends older brother crush on Walker since she was 12 and now grown up living independently, having a rich boyfriend and doing well for herself was a far cry from life she had as a child. Struggling in hand me downs and a mother who went from boyfriend to boyfriend she was finally content or was she?

Walker was a disappointment to his father turning down law school to become a fighter so when all his funds were plugged Gracie's best friend Kylie called in a favour. The boy she had loved all those years ago needed a place to stay.

Thoroughly enjoyed this easy read, set at just the right pace and building to an epic finish.

Told as third person and my only negative would be that if it was in first person it would of been more effective, knowing what is in the minds of the characters is what draws you in as a reader and makes you feel more involved but I loved it none the less.

Walker finally sees what was in front of his eyes all those years ago and Gracie now has to decide with her heart.

Gracie doesn't know if she can take the risk, he didn't want or see her all those years ago when he was the sought after quarterback in their home town but now he does and its rollercoaster read to finding out how this MMA fighter read will go down.

For the boy who grew up having almost everything, including Grace’s young heart, to the man who gave it all up to follow his dreams, Walker Adams still has a few things to learn about really wanting something and doing whatever it takes to get it. Will the sedate and organized Grace be the one thing he cannot obtain or will tossing off the role assumed for his life spark a little rebel in the successful business woman and bring back the memories of her tender feelings for him as a child? Walker Adams’ eyes and heart are finally open and he may have to choose between the woman he loves and the dreams of greatness in the ring.

Look what Jennifer Snow has cooked up now! Welcome to the world of MMA Fighters and the women who can take them to the mat, round after round. Breaking Her Rules is a delightful and fun romantic read that will bring memories of your childhood crush back with a smile. Ms. Snow has built a world based on MMA fighting, and adds her own one-two combination when she mixes business and pleasure for two souls who have been settling for less than fireworks in their lives. With the requisite false assumptions, hidden feelings and of course, the high powered, unromantic boyfriend who is safe, as well as the hot, female throwing herself into the mix to add another notch to her lipstick case, things are going to get dicey. Need a great read that will have your heart pumping, your head shaking and your grin of satisfaction lighting up the room? Breaking Her Rules is a quick, sassy and endearing read that will fit perfectly in a beach bag, or a soft and cozy chair. Sit back and relax, enjoy the ride and get ready to duck a few emotional punches.

**This is a DNF review**

Whoa. Two DNF's in one week for me. I think that's an all time high. Unfortunately, when something isn't working, you know it and this book just wasn't working for me.

The reason I had to quit this book was almost solely due to the heroine. I was 55% through the book and Gracie, the heroine, was still a doormat for her boyfriend. At first, I liked her fine because she was a career woman, trying to balance her work and personal life. She wasn't doing a great job but I thought she was just starting out and it's not like she could control her boyfriend's schedule. But she wasn't just starting out. And to me, it was obvious that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Worst of all, she let him constantly blow her off. I couldn't stand it and I couldn't stand reading any more.

Walker, the hero, was sort of boring. He had it all in high school - he was a star athlete, dated the cheerleaders, was smart, had rich parents and a family that loved each other. There was a tragedy in his life and it was a big one but he still pretty much had it all. Then he up and quits law school, 6 months? 1 year? before he finishes to start an MMA career? Why? I get that he never wanted to be a lawyer like his dad but he never wanted to be an MMA fighter either!! At least, he never mentioned it by the 55% mark. I just didn't really connect with him.

Again, more than halfway through the book and there was little to no Sexy Time or romance. A hug, a kiss on the forehead, Gracie feeling Walker's erection as she sits on his lap... that was as sexy as it got. There was a connection between them but Gracie had her head so far up her ass that she didn't seem to notice it.

I love MMA-themed romances but this one left me cold. And bored. The heroine was a waste and the hero wasn't quite interesting enough to keep me interested. I say pass on this one unless you like a real slow story.

I’m not one of the reviewers that tends to jump on Contemporary Romance’s. Frankly, it’s just not my thing. I tend to feel like they all run together. Kind of like, if you’ve read one you’ve read them all. I really want to select books that I believe I’d like. I want to give books good reviews. So, knowing what makes me critical, I just tend to stay away from Contemporary Romance novels.

Also, I am not athletic at all. I don’t watch any kind of sports, with the exception of a few years of obsessive WWE watching. I don’t like football, baseball, basketball… and most importantly I do not like any kind of professional fighting. (WWE is scripted, duh.) I can’t stand boxing, and I’ve never watched an MMA fight.

At this point you’ve got to be asking yourself why the hell I thought reading Breaking Her Rules would be a good idea? Easy. For some very strange reason I really love books about sports. Something about reading (or watching, I’m equal opportunity) about the adrenaline of sports really makes me excited. I could not resist the pull of a romance about an MMA fighter. I’m a gluten.

*Sigh*- Unfortunately this book was a lot like most of the other contemporaries that I’ve read. It was good- while I was reading it. I’m positive that it’s going to be gone, completely out of my head, very quickly. Once again the male of the story was hot and sweet and perfect, just the way they always are. The female in the story is beautiful without knowing it, but a little self-centered and standoffish. Throw in an ex, a history, and lots of angst, and you have this, and your traditional, contemporary romance.

Despite my lukewarm appreciation of Breaking Her Rules I am interested in reading the next book, if only because it sounds like it contains a woman who wants to train to fight… and also, once again, I’m a glutton.

I am a sucker for a sports romance and have been on a fighter kick lately so when I say Breaking Her Rules on netgalley I was instantly attracted to the cover and blurb. I love a sweet yet forbidden romance and this one fall under both categories.

Grace has had a crush on her best friend’s older brother ever since she first noticed boys but seeing as how her crush was one sided Grace moves on with her life and gets involved with a powerful man who she works for doing fight promotions.

“All I see if you, Gracie. Just you. When I’m awake, you’re on my mind. When I’m sleeping, it’s you I dream about. And knowing I can’t be with you is driving me crazy.”

Walker has walked away from the easy life handed to him to pursue his dream of being a MMA fighter. When his sister finds out he has been living in his car she calls her best friend, Grace, and ask for him to crash on her couch for a few weeks while he gets settled. But being in close quarters with the sexy man she has always lusted after makes her doubt all the plans she has for her life including the relationship she has been hoping would become permanent. One major problem, the man she is involved with is also the man who could make or break Walker’s career.

This was a fast and fun read with tons of sexual tension and funny quips at each other. I loved their backstory and how Walker became relentless once he found out about her teenage crush. The one thing I didn’t love is that while there really is no cheating she spends about 70% of this book in a relationship with another man. I would have loved more of them building a foundation together. However, even with this I found Breaking Her Rules to be an easy and enjoyable read and look forward to continuing the series.

Gracie ran as fast as she could from her hometown to college in Vegas and after became the head promoter in the MFL the top MMA league. She wanted to escape her poor upbringing, her always falling in love and being burned mother and her childhood crush Walker.

Now years later after a phone call from Kylie her best friend and Walker's sister in which she was a asked a huge favor and reluctantly agreed to she is now doubting herself. She is going to let Walker crash on her couch while he gets on his feet after dropping out of law school a semester or two from finishing to pursue his dreams of becoming a MMA fighter. Walker was living out of his jeep while trying to get on his feet after his trust was frozen by his dad after his decision.

Now together in a tiny, enclosed apt and interaction with the man are throwing all her thoughts and feelings into upheaval. She has loved Walker forever but she loves Erik. Erik is stable can keep her from falling into the despair of her childhood. Walker is rash and made a decision to start over to follow a dream. But Walker is caring where Erik always puts work 1st, even messing up her birthday.

As the book goes on the two get closer but fight to do what they think is best. Her to stay on her life plan, him to focus on his career and to not mess with the fight makers girl. A lesson learned the hard way by his trainer.

Where will their feelings lead? Will they give into their hearts? You will need to read to find out.

This is a well plotted, well written and fast book. I really liked it and it was almost a one day read, I was so into it.

Highly recommend it.

So what happens when the guy Grace had a crush on is temporarily her roommate while he discovers his passion in MMA? Can Grace find the happiness and love that she has always searched for? How far are you will to break the rules when it comes to love?

I was given a beta copy to read for an honest review.

I couldn't put this book down! The chemistry between Grave and Walker is undeniable! As her best friends brother Walker comes back into Grace's life and is camping out on her couch as a favor to her best friend. Grace then reliazes that she has never recovered from her teenage crush on Walker, and starts to reliaze that her safe and boring relationship with her boyfriend may not be what she wants after all. Walker is pursuing his dream of being an MMA fighter and will do anything including defying his father to achieve it. Ending up on Grace's couch was not part of his. Plan but could be the best thing that ever happened to him.

This story starts off a great series and was one of the best I have read! I couldn't put it down once I started reading it! It was addicting!! Loved it!!!

Breaking Her Rule is one of those middle ground reads for me. There was nothing I disliked about it, but I wasn't completely in love with it. It is well written, entertaining and an all around good read. I believe, overall, that the synopsis of this one, really sums up the book without giving away any spoilers or leading you to believe it's more than it is. That too made it enjoyable.

Walker is standup guy who wants to fight in the MMA. He's hot, sweet, tattooed and has a thing for tall, leggy brunettes. He's been studying for the last few years to be a lawyer, trying to appease everyone else but himself until the day he decides he's not going to do it anymore. He wants more out of life than going through the motions. His dad, who expects him to follow in his own footsteps, cuts him off completely. At first I wasn't sure about this guy, but he grew on me the more I learned about him.

Gracie is that tall, leggy brunette I mentioned earlier. She's got her head on straight, a job she excels at and a man in her life that she could really just do without. Gracie had a crush on Walker at 12 and it only grew with the years until eventually she thought she was over it. That is until her best friend called with plea for Gracie to help her brother. What could three weeks of letting him bunk on her couch hurt, right? Not much. Until she opens the door and realizes that Walker's only gotten better looking with time and that her feelings have never truly gone away. With an absentee fiancee who has a better relationship with his phone than Gracie and doesn't pay her much mind beyond her job, she gets to know Walker all over again.

These two definitely spark when they meet again. Gracie lays out her "rules" and Walker agrees to follow them if they'll be living together. I mean, how much could they really bother each other with both having jobs and Walker training all the time? It's not a huge explosion, although the chemistry is very obviously there, think of it like a slow burn. They are both working though things, Gracie with her job and fiancee, and Walker with his training, upcoming fight and his father.

This book never lagged out for me, it never seemed rushed or had some of the awkward situations that sometimes creep into a book. I gave it a solid three stars. I liked it, a lot. I thought the supporting cast was great too and I'm excited to see spinoffs for other characters from this book.

What I Loved: I have a soft spot for romances about childhood crushes so I very happy to get this ARC. Gracie grew up worshipping Walker as a child, and is confronted by him once again as an adult. It was cute watching his feelings for Gracie grow when he sees her again and eventually falls for her. I think that’s why I enjoyed this story so much, watching two people who’ve known each other for so long make their way through adulthood and these new budding feelings.

I loved how Walker not only fought to get ahead in the MMA but also fought for Gracie at every turn. She didn’t make it easy for him but he knew what he wanted and went after it. Walker is definitely an alluring character and I totally had a goofy smile on my face at certain points because of him. He’s sexy, confident and he has given up a lot to follow his dreams, Walker is a true man in every way and exudes that throughout the book.

Not So Much:I kind of felt like there was a lot of buildup of something very dramatic happening and when it finally came I was a bit let down. There was this threat looming over Walker’s head about not messing with Matchmaker’s girl and when that came to fruition I was like; “that’s it?” There was just so much build to a climax that was almost anticlimactic when it finally happened. Plus the beginning of the book was just way too slow, there wasn’t even a freaking kiss until about 60% of the way through. It was became a little annoying not to see any action until I’m almost done with the story.

Also I felt like there was a lack of details, I wish there would’ve been more description of Gracie’s apartment and maybe where in Vegas she lived. Also a description of where her office was compared to where she lived, just general stuff like that. I learned more about Gracie and Walker’s hometown then I did about where they actually lived. I get it’s Las Vegas, but people that live there experience it differently than people who visit, and I would’ve like to have seen that.

As much as I enjoy Jennifer Snow's work, this one just didn't wow me like I wanted it to. Which isn't to say it's not a good book because it is, I think my hangup with the book was Grace. In a professional capacity, she certainly seemed to know her stuff, but in a personal capacity? Walker was definitely the wake up call she needed.

Walker Adams has finally decided to live life his way, and that means not following the path his father wants him on. However, not following that path resulted in dad cutting off all financial support to Walker, hence the reason Walker finds himself bunking on Grace's couch. Grace spends the majority of the book trying to convince herself that her feelings for Walker are nothing more than an unrequited crush from when they were kids. As much as Grace tries to deny it, there is chemistry between her and Walker, and it doesn't help that her current significant other doesn't seem to be as involved in their relationship.

While this book does have a HEA for both Grace and Walker, I would have liked a bit more drama when it came to the deal that was proposed to Walker; it was like "here's the deal and what you get if you go through with it", but since Walker didn't take the deal, nothing else was said about that incident. I would have liked a little more drama when it came to Erik and Faith; there were bits and pieces of drama, but nothing substantial.

Overall, this is a quick and entertaining read with a few colorful characters added, but I'm looking forward to the next book in series that is centered around Tyson Reed.

An awesome, sexy, way to start this new series!

I absolutely loved the premise of the story: Her teenage crush suddenly needs to crash on her couch for three weeks. No big deal, they're both adults now, she can handle this...except she's not over her crush like she thought she was.

Jennifer did an amazing job teasing about what the outcome of the pseudo-roommate situation between Grace and Walker would be. Some of my favorite parts were Walker's inner monologues and his dialogue with Grace. Once Grace and Walker got the feeling that things might not be strictly platonic anymore between them, the tension built fast and got HOT!

Jennifer also did a great job building the anticipation of Walker's final cage fight as well as trying up some loose ends among some of the characters, specifically Walker and his father.

I loved everything about this . I even found it a little difficult to hate the villain! The story flowed smoothly and I was completely engrossed from start to finish. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!!

What could go wrong when Gracie Andrews agrees to let the brother of her best friend crash on her sofa for a few weeks...the brother who she grew up having a crush on...the brother who is now a hunky MMA fighter. Or should I ask...what could go right??

While Walker Adams is trying to breaking into the UFC, he is totally reliant on Grace’s ‘good graces’. She gives him a place to stay, helps him find a job and a gym to train at, and leaves his head spinning. Grace is now engaged to a powerful Vegas fight match-maker and has no interest in turning her back on a stable relationship for one with Walker, a man with no career and no money. (Don't worry Walker, I'd take you regardless)

The chemistry between Grace and Walker was red hot! I loved the push and pull as they tried to figure out how to make it work between them. Jennifer did a great job of creating believable characters, ones that I was cheering for in the end.

I loved this book and I can’t wait for the next one in the series.

The chemistry between Grace and Walker is off the charts for this one! Walker decided his father's plans for his future weren't what he wanted and he broke out on his own. The problem is that in his quest to be an MMA fighter, he has no money or place to live. So he ends up staying with his sister's friend, Grace's couch.

Grace had a huge crush on him years ago, but has since moved on to a more stable relationship with a fight promoter. She doesn't want to lose that to take a chance on Walker's indecisive life. But can she really turn away from her heart's desire?

Walker is really the sweetest guy I mean he knows how to clean and organize, "anyway, everything else— cleaning supplies, tampons . . . a dead vibrator . . . all on the bottom shelf." He gets you tingling in all the right places, "he closed the small gap between them in a flash. “Are you trying to get me hard, because it’s working." I loved seeing Gracie all excited and approving over her man, "Throw them on the floor!” He did. Then his underwear, his c*** standing erect as it escaped the confines of his briefs. Gracie’s eyes went immediately to it and she smiled. “Even better when you’re excited,” she teased." I liked this book I loved Walker.

Loved it! The chemistrty is off the charts between Grace and Walker. Grace grew up with nothing and is best friends with Walker's sister. Grace helps Walker with his dream of being an MMA fighter. Walker wants Grace but is seeing someone else. Grace is frustrated because she wants Walker and is dating her boss. It was exciting to see how Grace and Walker finally come together and fall in love. This is a must read!

I could've cared less about either of these characters. Grace was ok, but Walker was worthless. He's half-assing everything and doesn't appreciate any of the opportunities he's given. He's the complete opposite of every fighter/athlete I've ever read about, and that's not a good thing. Professional sports are about dedication and hard work, not waiting around for your time to shine & doing nothing to aid your success.

It's common knowledge that we often can't see what's right in front of us and that perfectly sums up the relationship between Grace and Walker since they were young. It's an emotional journey as these two people from very different worlds reunite to admit feelings that will change their lives forever. Along with a slowly burning romance readers get a glimpse into the gritty world of MMA fighting and all the behind the scenes machinations that combine to make this a compelling read that races to an exciting conclusion.

Grace came from a life of just struggling to get by. With a flighty mother constantly working to make ends meet and who repeatedly gave her heart away to men who quickly walked away set Grace on a path where she was willing to settle for a life of comfort over happiness and emotional support. She always loved Walker but had to stand by watching him go from one beautiful woman to the next all the while convinced that he'd never want someone as plain as her. She's tried to forget him throughout the years, forging a relationship with a man of importance in the MMA community, but coming into contact with Walker once again reignites the feelings she once had for him. With a proposal in her future from a man who takes her for granted, cares more about work than love, and makes her feel unimportant left me frustrated and hoping she'd take a second chance on love when Walker's eyes are finally opened. Grace is a strong-willed woman in many respects but being with Erik makes her spineless. She puts up with his ignoring and forgetting about her as well as his lack of passion with a serene smile on her face that made me want to punch some sense into her. Before Walker arrived she was bland and fearful of taking chances for fear of failing, but Walker brings out a sassy side to her, a much braver one that I vastly preferred.

Walker came from a family of wealth that seemed picture perfect and with everything coming easy to him as he was seen as the Golden Boy. His father had plans for him to be a lawyer but with graduation looming large he throws it all away to fulfill a dream he's had since he was young. Wanting to be an MMA fighter has him cut off financially and ending up on childhood friend Grace's couch. She's not what he remembers though and when certain truths and feelings are revealed not only will he fight for the career he wants but he'll be fighting for Grace's love too. I adored Walker from the moment I laid eyes on his glistening, freshly-showered body. Once he finally admitted what he wanted out of life he didn't let anything hold him back. When he realized how he truly felt about Grace he was loyal, never letting other women sway him, despite Grace being with Erik. Walker always held out hope, believing in dreams that he could one day claim Grace. Walker could be cocky at times but he was always caring and supportive despite being made to feel like a failure by his father, and with many doubting his ability to win a life-changing fight. Through it all I was cheering him on.

This is a story that started off slowly with Grace a pushover in interacting with Erik who I found smarmy. Walker was a breath of fresh air lighting up every scene he was in with his charm, sexiness, and flirty nature. As the story progressed, and as he and Grace grew closer, their interactions became more flirty with witty banter that was teeming with sensuality. That sensuality didn't add up to many sexual moments though until very late in the book which further frustrated me. The concluding chapters is when the action really picked up which had me on the edge of my seat watching Walker fight for his life and his love. Surrounding these memorable main characters is a unique and colorful cast of secondary characters that make this MMA world larger than life and who I'd love to see more of. From bar owner Maria with her take no prisoners attitude, to former fighter Tyson with a mysterious past of his own who gives Walker the knowledge he needs to get what he wants, these characters helped immerse me in this story even more and have me excited for the next installment set in this gritty world of broken dreams. Readers looking for a delicious hero who will sweep you off your feet need look no further than Walker Adams and this series starter from Ms. Snow.

The story of Grace (Gracie) and Walker.
Grace works for an MMA organization as a marketing person. She's the girlfriend to Erik, who is high in the MMA organization - but not her direct boss. Erik is all business, all the time.
Walker has just dropped out of law school - with only a semester left, to pursue his dream of being an MMA fighter. Living in his car for the past few weeks, his sister Kylie - which happens to be Grace's best friend from childhood, talks Grace into allowing Walker to stay on her couch for a few weeks until she moves out of her place to move in with Erik (an already planned move).
Being in Walker's presence makes Grace remember what a huge loving crush she had on Walker growing up. She watched him with girl after girl back then, wishing it was her.
When she gets sick (she catches Walker's cold), he ignores training to cook her some soup.
This is when Grace begins to realize that her dreams of a secure future with a handsome, successful man (Erik) may not be the best thing for her. As Erik continues to basically ignore her, standing her up on her birthday, ignoring calls and texts, etc., she's leaning more and more towards Walker.
The person I disliked the most in this story was the huge s*** of a "journalist" that did a sports show - Faith. It's well known in the MMA circle that Faith goes after EVERY fighter, and when they sleep with her, they win their next fight (or so the story says). Faith has her sights set on Walker and she is absolutely relentless to the point of embarrassment, though he really does nothing to encourage her.
Gracie is super jealous of Faith, and more so when she hears that Faith has slept with a few other key people in her life.
The story centers on Walker's short lead up to a fight as a brand new fighter on the circuit against a hugely successful opponent.
Will Grace and Walker have the fortitude to get rid of Erik and Faith so they can make a go of it? Also - as important, will Walker be able to prove he is cut out to be a professional fighter?
It took me a bit, but I really got into the story. I would have felt differently about the Grace/Walker infatuation if Erik had been a nice guy that paid attention to her (or even had sex/kissed her). I don't tolerate cheating, but this was done in a way that I did not feel upset. I rooted her Grace to kick Erik to the side. Even if she did not end up with Walker, she deserved better than Erik!
I felt the only love scene in the story was lacking though. As much build up as there was, years of fantasizing from Grace, it was just kind of there. I think it could be revamped and make the story a "knockout".
All in all, a solid story with likeable main characters.

Title: Breaking the Rules
Author: Jennifer Snow
Publisher/Year: Penguin 7/21/15
Length: 231 pages

Overview

MMA fighters go the distance in this all-new series from Jennifer Snow, author of the Brookhollow novels.

Walker Adams was supposed to follow in his lawyer father’s footsteps, but instead he’s training to be an MMA fighter. And while he works for his chance to make it in the Maximum Fight League, he’s bunking on his baby sister’s best friend’s couch. Gracie Andrews is all grown up—in all the right places. But she’s engaged to the fight match-maker who holds Walker’s career in his hands…

Gracie had almost convinced herself that she’d put her silly childhood crush on Walker to rest. But the sight of him sleeping in only a pair of boxer briefs makes it clear that some things never change. And as old sparks turn to flames, Gracie is forced to decide between the future she thought she wanted or the man she’s never stopped loving…

My Thoughts

First off, thanks to the folks at Red Moon Book Tours for sharing the ARC with me - always appreciate being able to check out authors and books to give my thoughts. It's funny - with all that i've read in the genre, it's usually in a different context that we're brought into the world of hand to hand anything. I think back to a favorite series of mine where the lead characters are all Ds, but they also own a Dojo and that's where we get the element of fighting. In this though, it's really brought to us in a nice way.

The other nice element here is that similar to a bit of other stuff that i've read recently, we get to see that there's a bond when kids are younger (or at least an unrequited crush) and it's not until everyone's grown up, filled out and gotten a bit of hard life experience that brings them back together.

There's a lot of back and forth here - Gracie doesn't know what it is that she wants in life and what does that mean for her? well you have to stay invested here to really get it. Then there's the fact that Walker's eyes may have been opened up once he saw what Gracie has grown into, and while that's a nice thing - it's very expected.

The journey that we go on here is nice, there relationship that they develop is a good one - it's sweet and i think that you want to root for the happy ending. The question is though is what will it mean to each other since they clearly chose different paths. All in all though, i think that this could be the beginning to a good series. I'm one to really hope for spin-offs with other characters since the supportings tend to be really interesting, so here's to hoping. I hope that you guys get a chance to pick it up - it'll be a nice read for you.

Walker Adams made a serious change to his future. Just months before becoming a lawyer, he left his career behind to pursue his future in MMA fighting. His father is not down with his decision and removes his support. His trust fund is gone. Walker has no choice but asks for help and he ends up staying with his sister Kylie's long time friend Gracie Andrews.

Gracie swore to herself never to have a life like her mother did. Jumping from relationship to relationship, living from paycheck to paycheck, dressing from hand me downs. The first chance she got she was going to College on a scholarship swearing never to return to town. She needs stability in her life. She has a great job, a boyfriend who is the epitome of success. The last thing she needs is to start doubting her feelings when her long time crush moves in with her.

~~
Beyond Her Rules was a fast read. I understood why Gracie craved stability. She didn't do anything wrong. She wanted a good job with a good future. Her childhood and adolescence were not easy. She was determined to succeed and never go hungry again. I understood why she had to keep away from Walker. He was the opposite of secure for her. A guy with no job, no money and with an up in the air future. What I didn't like was she not cutting ties with Erik earlier, once she realized he was not for her.
Walker..hmm .. I liked him. He was open with what he wanted from Gracie. He never knew how Gracie felt about him when they were younger. He's not to blame for it. The only thing that nagged me had to do with his irresponsibility towards his fighting. He was late to training, thought about skipping, etc. Only in the last part did he finally show me what I wanted to see from the beginning.
Just little things that didn't work for me but overall I enjoyed it.
I want Tyson's book now.

Cliffhanger: No
