Blood+ #3

Blood+, Vol. 3

Rate this book
This third, pivotal volume reveals one of the biggest secrets in the Blood+ mythos - but you'll have to wade through plenty of violence, betrayal, and sacrifice before you get there! Hagi shows just how resilient he can be, Kai is as stubborn and reckless as ever, and confused, sweet Riku is once again in the wrong place at the wrong time. Speaking of time, this volume also features a longer flashback sequence that takes us to the 1800's and another violent episode in Saya's curious, catastrophic life! A brutal skirmish, eye-popping gore, and some enlightening flashbacks open this pivotal volume to the Blood+ manga series, as Saya faces her brutal tormentor Charles head on.

Flashback and history!
Saya has her memories now, and she cannot be that happy human girl is sad; I also feel for her original life when she thought she was just a girl but a social experiment.
They also made Diva the monster she is by locking her up. If they had both grown upraised as humans, I know things would never have happened.

Review for complete series

In this Blood: The Last Vampire spin-off, Saya has no memory of her previously blood-filled life; she is now an ordinary high schooler who bickers with her siblings. But it's not long until her past catches up with her and she is once again fighting against blood-sucking monsters. But having lived as an ordinary human has changed her perception of the world and humans.

Blood+ is yet another work in the Blood universe that I have purely picked up to know more about Saya who I enjoyed in Blood C. It's not a manga I would usually pick as I am no major fan of horror and splatter. In the case of this adaptation, I also wouldn't have picked it up due to the art. There's nothing wrong with the art at all - it's neatly drawn and well proportioned - it just doesn't appeal to me personally. I also don't appreciate Saya's short hairstyle, I always considered her long hair iconic to her.

I felt that Blood+ was more character-driven than the other adaptations I am familiar with. In a way, that's good - I care more for a character-driven plot than lots of gore. That being said, while there was a solid cast of characters with distinct personalities, perhaps 5 volumes was too short to explore them thoroughly. At the same time, I am glad that it wasn't longer as, ultimately, it wasn't my cup of tea.

I would say that this is definitely not a bad manga and probably pretty good if picked up by the intended audience. For me, it was an ok manga that I merely read as a means to an end rather than being genuinely invested in this version of Saya.

In this volume we finally get to see how Saya and Diva came to be and how they each grew up. It also explains how Hagi came to work for Saya. This is all really interesting and possibly the best part of this volume. Now that we understand the setting of the story and the motivations of the characters it will be really interesting to see how the story progresses from here.

Everything’s starting to feel a little rushed which I get but it’s still frustrating to say the least. I did really enjoy getting the full back story though as I don’t remember getting much in the anime but it’s also been years since I’ve watched it.

Was really interesting learning about Saya's past in this one for me personally. Also how her relationship with Hagi started too. I really like Hagi a lot. (My favorite character.)

Schade.

The third volume of five gives us more back story on Haji, Saya, and Diva. We see how Saya and Diva are both brought up completely differently. Diva is treated more like a caged animal while Saya is brought up with a privileged life. As vampires themselves, Saya is fed "medicine" which unbeknownst to her is blood from humans that have been sacrificed. Nature vs. Nurture is the lesson here. Both twins have the potential to be kind hearted, but Diva's conditions force her to take a more savage approach to dealing with people while Saya grows up surrounded by love. Both girls are the victims here, though naturally Saya comes off as more sympathetic. She is the protagonist after all.

I loved seeing the back story between her and Haji. I think I liked it even better than the anime because their attraction evolves and we know for sure that they were in love. In the anime, it's implied instead of confirmed. Also, how Haji becomes Saya's chevalier is different from the anime.

This volume was my favorite of the five, but that's just because I'm a huge Haji fan and have a soft spot for flashbacks. Thankfully we got a good deal of it here. It's a recommended read for sure.

Don't let the pretty, happy cover of Blood+, Volume 3 fool you. This dark and bloody volume is full of gore and reveals some twisted secrets about Saya's past, including unveiling Diva's identity.

I feel so bad for Charles and Riku, who are both victims of unfortunate circumstances. I would have liked to learn more about Charles. Even though he is a wicked brat, his story is so heartbreaking that it moved me more than any of the other stories.

For the first time in this series, I had a few Pfft! moments. I know this is a manga and reality is skewed, but some of the ideas were too absurd for even this fantastical-story lover. I mean, really, how the heck does an ugly zombie spawn drop-dead-gorgeous offspring? Eh, I love this series enough to overlook it though.

We finally learn the history of Saya, Hagi and Diva- and boy is it gory! Lots and lots of death and blood. Hagi has such an interesting past; I want to learn more about him. Unfortunately, Charles, one of my favorites, is no longer in the series. He was so complex, with different layers to his personality. At first, he was just evil, but as we peeled away layers, we saw how vulnerable he was. So far in this story, Charles stole the whole thing for me. I'm sad to see him go.

As they get closer and closer to finding Riku, they are taken on a journey into the dark past of Saya's history as one of the original Chiropterans. Revealing her actual age to be closer to hundreds of years old with amnesia being a problem with her regular hibernation cycle. She is by nature a killing machine with a twin bent on destroying humanity.

I love this adaptation so much more than the original. The art's grown on me, the violence is outstanding and kinda delicious, plus there're more "ecchi"-ish and shounen-ai elements than the anime. And I'm not gonna lie - I've always loved the chevalier and Diva/Saya complex the most, which is very prominent here.

I thought this was a very good manga series. I was captivated by all of the characters and I liked the danger and slight romance. The drawings were stunningly beautiful. This is a great read, especially for lovers of vampires!

We learn a little of Saya's origins in the zoo in this volume and find out about her relationshop with her evil twin Diva. Nice interplay with Chevalier Charles and Saya's brother Riku. Solid story, but not the best artwork I've seen.

The plot line is getting more and more intense with each volume, and my love for Saya and Hagi is growing with each page!
I really cannot stress how much I love Katsura's artwork in this, and how awesome the little bonus comics are in the back of it!

I think I either didn't finish the anime or this story is different because I don't recall any of the stuff that happened with Riku. I look forward to finding out what happens next.
