As one of the authors in Ashes For Another, I got to read some of the stories beforehand–but I waited to read some of the others. The immense amount of time and energy invested in these stories is clear when you read them–each one is crafted beautifully and reflects their author very well. The stories are both individual and come together well, and the book as a whole is a very strong example of indie publishing as a group of young writers.

I'm going to write a mini-review for each story (besides my own), as I think each one deserves a mention.

The Basket of Ellen Fable by Ivy Dalton: This is the only historical fiction story in the book. It's a sweet story of kindness and love and is simply lovely to read.

The Greatest Sacrifice by Esther Dawn: This story is the longest, but Esther makes every word worth reading. It's a strong story with a beautiful picture of the greatest sacrifice–and the Greatest Story.

Unless the Grain of Wheat by Grace Sudlow: This is the only biblical fiction in the book. It gives a whole new perspective on the story of Esther and reminds the reader to trust in God's providence and plans.

The Monster in the Maze by Anna Kailin Fletcher: Unlike any other story in the book, this story is a great reminder to lean on others when it's needed and brings a fun, different element to the entire book.

The North Wind by Anastasia Nicole Meservy: A great story of healing and remembrance. I also love the circular, symbolic ending!

Wanted by Bobbie Lathrop: An adventure-based dystopian story that had me asking questions the whole time–and surprised me with the sacrifice at the end.

Through Sorrow and Pain by Chloe Quinn*: Sweet and gentle with a hint of sentimentality, this story reflects the loving heart of an older sister who wants to take care of anyone younger than her.

Giving Up Glory by Abby Kay: This story blends familial relationships with intriguing action and is a good reminder to the reader that courage and strength don’t necessarily mean receiving praise from others.

The Mark of Death by Carly N. Droullard: Though the heaviest story in the book, this story is written well and brings you into the character’s head and emotions, making the end difficult but understandable.

The Cost of the Crown by Ann Weaver: I wrote this story, so I’m not going to review it. I will say that I enjoyed writing it–and that others have said that the bittersweet ending wraps up this anthology in a strong reflection of both protection and sacrifice.

*Despite who this is linked to, this story is NOT written by that person but instead by a young Christian teen. The Tangent Guild is not affiliated in any way; it is simply impossible at the moment to unlink them from this book.
