A funny and poignant coming-of-age graphic novel about friendship and neurodivergent experience from the creator and AuDHDer known as NeuroWild.
ADHDer Eve tries so hard to fit in at school and be herself. But is that even possible? She seems to create chaos wherever she goes. And with her BFF Sasha finding out she’s autistic and Zack becoming something more than a friend, even her anchor points are turning chaotic. Can Eve find a way to calm her chaos? Or will she find a way use it?
Em Hammond, AKA NeuroWild, is an Autistic and ADHDer speech pathologist, and Mum to three neurodivergent kids. She is also widely known for her illustrations and resources about neurodiversity and supporting Autistic and ADHD kids.
I wish I could go back in time and give this book to 11 year old me. The dialogue of the neurotypical friends vs Eve, Sasha and Zack's conversations was just so perfectly observed and highlighted the beauty and joy of finding one's neurokin. The illustrations were perfect and the signs (particularly in Eve's kitchen!) and margin notes really tickled my sense of humour. I am a speech pathologist and will be sharing this book widely with my families. I don't want any kid to ever experience what Sasha experienced.
This book was FABULOUS, I read it in one sitting as there was no way I could put it down. Em does an incredible job of portraying the characters, especially Eve’s ADHD and Sasha’s autistic brains. Funny, real, heartwarming and overwhelmingly relatable, this will be a book I share with everyone in my life, forever. There will be young people (and adults) who see themselves represented for the first time ever when they read this, may it get into the hands of as many readers as possible.
no notes - this was a beautiful affirming story with some gorgeous neurodivergent rep. teenagers can be a tricky audience to write/create for and neurowild has absolutely nailed it. I bought this for my clients but reading it also healed something in myself.
