The Fates wrote her ending. Death offers to rewrite it.
Persephone Morgrave has always been a whispered warning in her small town, cursed to kill anyone who gets too close. It is only superstition until people start dying. And when Persephone learns the Fates are hunting her because of this curse, her only lead is a silver-haired stranger who seems to know more about her fate than she does.
Thanatos, the god of Death, is far from the skeletal figure she imagined-enigmatic, captivating, and shrouded in secrets. Persephone knows better than to trust the gods, yet in a world of dark prophecies and impending doom, he may be the only one capable of keeping her alive.
To survive, Persephone must make an impossible choice: accept her fate or challenge it. Choosing Thanatos may end the harm she causes to those around her, but it demands her soul in return. Gods never give without taking, and trusting him may cost Persephone everything.
Book one of The Shadowed Pantheon series, a Greek-myth-inspired gothic dark fantasy. Perfect for fans of The Book of Azrael and Phantasma.
Greek mythology and a God of Death? You already have me.
This is one of those books where I'd love to discuss so many things, but since most of them would be spoilers, let's stick to the general points.
"Yes. God help you. I am the god. Next time, if you prefer a different sort of deliverance, specify which."
The main character, Persephone, or Seph as she likes to be called, felt like a very complex character, and I really felt for her given all the struggles she faced throughout the book. People say she's cursed, that she carries death with her. And as it turns out, that's kind of literal after all, as we have the God of Death himself, who takes quite an interest in her and her soul...
"Maybe the tragedy wasn't that people feared her, but that she started to believe they were right."
I really liked both of them as main characters. Seph, in particular, carrying all that guilt and the grief of losing her family, along with all the trauma that follows; it was so overwhelming that I even felt it myself, I truly suffered alongside her. It felt like as soon as she got past one hard situation, she'd fall straight into another. Thanatos is one of those characters who shows up and completely captivates you; everything tells you that you shouldn't trust him, yet it's impossible not to fall. I have to say that, while the romance was fine, it didn't entirely convince me, I have some theories about why.
A truly significant part of the book, and one I absolutely loved, was the Greek mythology: all the stories and myths about various gods and creatures, along with the different versions of these tales, distinguishing between what humans recount and what actually happened. I especially loved the take on Medusa, as well as the moments where the characters wonder if certain events might have unfolded differently, completely altering the stories as we know them today. The use of a few Greek words in some chapters was also a great idea, it really adds the perfect touch.
As for the monsters, if I can call them that, to not go into too much detail as it is really interesting to go meeting them in the book, they left me truly traumatized. It was a much darker book than I anticipated, though, given the title, I'm not sure what I was actually expecting.
And that ending? Can we talk about that ending?! It made me think again about the entire book from the beggining, searching for new interpretations of everything that unfolded. I'm very curious to see what happens in the following books.
Thanks to the author, Rinn Marrell, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Greek mythology, a mortal with a seriously complicated relationship with death and a god who makes questionable decisions look suspiciously tempting. What could possibly go wrong? Apparently, A LOT!!! Persephone “Seph” has been through enough to make anyone want to disappear into a blanket and never speak to another human again. Her grief and guilt made me feel for her and I could understand why she kept people at a distance. Poor girl really couldn’t catch a break.
Then we have Thanatos. A literal god of death with secrets, questionable intentions and a way of making you forget that trusting him might be a terrible life choice. I had moments when I was completely sold on him and others when I wanted to confiscate everyone’s decision making privileges. The tension between him and Seph kept things interesting and I liked that their relationship wasn’t all sunshine and perfectly timed romantic gestures. I also enjoyed the darker atmosphere and the Greek mythology blended into the story. There are quite a few details to take in at first but I appreciated the different spin on familiar mythology. The mystery kept me curious and the final stretch? Rinn, I have questions and I would like to speak to whoever approved that ending because EXCUSE ME?!
My only real struggle was getting settled into the worldbuilding early on. There was a lot to absorb before everything started clicking for me but once I found my footing I was much more invested.
Final thoughts: I had a good time with this one! Between the mythology, complicated characters, romantic tension and all the chaos waiting around the corner, I’m definitely interested in seeing where the series goes next. That ending has left me with far too many questions to simply close the book and carry on with my life like a normal person. Peace was never an option.
This was a nice engaging read! I instantly fell for our FMC! I loved the Greek mythology sprinkled throughout the story and it helped to better understand some of our MMC’s background. It had just the right amount of spice in it for me and it’ll be nice to see where the characters journey takes them in the next book!
Persephone “Seph” is being followed by death. Little does she know that’s more true than she originally thought. Thanatos, god of peaceful death has his sight set on her and her soul.
I loved the story, I appreciate a book that feels like I’m learning something new every time I turn the page. As someone that doesn’t know a lot about Greek mythology, I still felt like I could read and understand what was happening. The spice, 🌶️🌶️ out of 5. Thanatos speaking to her in the different language 🥵
I appreciated Seph being so multilayered, to go through all she did and still have the strength to keep going is truly inspiring.
The ending was crazy and had me immediately wishing for the second book!
But RIP, iykyk. That was bull 😭
All in all I loved this book and can’t wait to see how to story continues.

Okay I absolutely loved this book! I was drawn in from beginning to end and never once felt bored! I will say this is definitely a slower paced book focused on setting up the world so if you are looking for a fast moving plot this isn’t going to be the book for you. This book definitely set up what I think is going to be an amazing trilogy! My heart broke at the end with some of the loses and my mind was also blown with how it ended. I’m so excited to see where this story goes!
Review of advanced reader copy received from the author ✨✨
I wasn’t hooked the entire time… BUT DAMN DID SHE GET ME. The world building took up a good bit of this book, but I think that’s to be expected. She’s setting up for the rest of the trilogy. With that said, the world building was good and the gothic vibes and extreme isolation Persephone was putting herself through came through very clearly. By the looks of that ending.. this trilogy is going to be worth the read!! This was a different take on the mythos than I’m used to seeing and it was refreshing. It was crazy how easily Rinn was able to lull me into a sense of safety with the freaking God of Death. I was here for it. I found myself wondering why Seph would ever question Thanatos. I loved the side characters like Frank, Billy, and Azrail. Billy especially, such a sweet soul. And I LOVE a enemies to lovers read, so this was right in my wheel house.
THE ENDING HAD ME JUST 😳😳 I couldn’t predict where the story was headed at any point. I was walking blind through this story and loved it.
Books with Greek Mythology can be hit or miss for me but this one sounded like something I would enjoy. This book started off slow for me but I understand that the author needs time to do some worldbuilding. This is slated to be a trilogy (I think) so the slow start was expected so just know that going in. As far as the characters go, I liked Seph and thought she was relatable. Thanatos is fine, and I see the appeal but I wasn't sure about the relationship between him and Seph. This book ends on a cliffhanger, which I presumed it would but it definitely made me want to continue this series when the next book comes out.
Thank you to the author for access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you so much Rinn Marrell for sending me this ARC!
Rely On Death is the first book in a Paranormal Romance series and it’s a really interesting and unputdownable story with Greek mythology lore, I loved it!
After her whole family died in a tragic accident with Persephone miraculously surviving, she becomes feared and hated in her town. When people keep dying around her, Seph realizes she might truly be cursed and she meets Thanatos, the Greek god who offers her help in exchange for her soul. She doesn’t agree to that deal and decides to break the curse on her own, which proves more difficult than she expected with mythological creatures hunting her and Thanatos keeping appearing and their attraction growing.
I must admit this book was different from what I expected but in the best way possible, I was hooked from chapter one and read it in one sitting, the plot was perfectly paced and really interesting and the plot twists had me with my jaw on the floor. I love Greek mythology and this book had it perfectly interwoven with contemporary world, I loved seeing different characters and creatures and the twists on them and how everything worked together. Persephone didn’t have an easy life and my heart was breaking for her and everything she has been going through, she was so strong and I really liked her. Thanatos… he is the kind of morally grey love interest I adore in romantasy books and while my feelings were mixed about him and are even more so after that ending, his yearning for Persephone and those “touch her and die” vibes were perfect. These two had a complicated relationship with a lot of tension and yearning and I loved seeing them together and am really excited to see them again in book 2, after how this one ended it sure is going to be interesting, to say the least, and I need it ASAP.
Rely On Death is an amazing book, I loved it and recommend it to everyone. The next book can’t come soon enough!
Thank you to Rinn Martell for providing me with a copy. The following review represents my honest opinion.
This was such an enjoyable read!! I read it all in one sitting; I literally couldn’t put it down. I can’t believe that ending though! I’m gonna need the next one immediately.
Why I DNFed Rely On Death: I gave it 80 pages and here are the reasons for my DNF:
The prologue felt too rushed and used an in-medias-res style that I found confusing. I felt the narrative jumped around far too much without providing enough context.
During roughly the first 30 pages, the beginning could benefit from substantial restructuring. My biggest issue wasn't simply that the story was slow it was I didn't feel sufficiently grounded in what was happening.
Characters were introduced extremely quickly in the prologue and opening chapters without enough contextualization.
I specifically questioned:
Who is Azrail? Who is Frank? Who is Billy? Who is Nikolas?
I had major questions surrounding the mythology:
Why do the Fates hunger for blood?
Why are they hunting Persephone?
Why is Thanatos stalking the graveyard keeper?
Why is Persephone cursed?
Why is Thanatos looking for her?
I felt these were foundational questions rather than intriguing mysteries because I didn't yet understand enough about the story to contextualize them.
🔮 "Hexed Seph"
One of mybiggest examples was the introduction of the phrase "Hexed Seph."
My complaint was that the phrase was introduced without enough immediate context explaining what it meant.
That added another concept to an opening I already felt was overloaded with unexplained information.
💀 Chapter One really confused me
This was probably my strongest criticism.
The opening tells the reader that the FMC is dead and was pulled back from the void.
That's a massive revelation.
But after only a handful of sentences, the narrative moves into Frank showing her a bike he restored for her.
My reaction was essentially:
Wait you need to go back to that
I felt that if you're going to begin Chapter One by revealing that your protagonist died and was somehow pulled back from the void, that revelation needs room to breathe.
Instead, I felt the book introduced something enormously important and then immediately moved past it.
📖 Too many ideas without enough grounding
By page 81, I felt like the story had introduced a large number of characters, mythological concepts and mysteries without giving you enough reason to understand why they mattered.
I particularly struggled with the dialogue during the first 28 pages and beyond because I felt conversations jumped around and became difficult to follow.
And even after Thanatos reappeared around page 28, I still didn't feel the story had settled into a clear enough direction.
🔥 My original raw rant
My overall reaction was that the story felt vague, confusing, extremely slow and structurally disorganized.
I thought the opening would benefit from more developmental revision, particularly:
Better organization and transitions
More contextualization
Slower introduction of characters
Clearer dialogue
More development of Persephone before expanding the cast
More immediate grounding surrounding the curse, Thanatos and the Fates
Less description that doesn't advance the central story
Review of advanced copy received from Author. My opinions are my own. Thank you, Rinn Marrell for letting me read! This has Greek Mythology and dark romance woven into the plot, an FMC who has ten lifetimes of trauma, and an MMC with the patience of a saint. The relationship between FMC & MMC is just getting started, and a LOT happened in the last 50 pages 🤯 The writing is absolutely beautiful, with my favorite samples below:
“They speak of curses when they do not understand resilience. You do not bring death. You walk through it and come back fighting. They look at you and see a girl who should have died. I look at you and see the one who made death hesitate.”
“Peaceful death, huh? The idea of death being anything but brutal or terrifying was impossible to grasp. How could something so final, so absolute, carry peace? I’d only ever known it as the thing that tore holes in lives, that left chairs empty at dinner tables, turned laughter into silence and memories into knives.“ 🌶️🧅
I received this arc from the author. I have to say this book is top tier, one of my all time favorites from this year! Rinn did such an amazing job with this book! Definitely a must read! This book had me hooked the whole time from start to finish. Great world building.
“For those who flirt with death—don’t worry, he flirts back.”
From the dedication to the last page I couldn’t wait to find out what happens. This book follows a seemingly “cursed” girl Persephone who has an eerie death follows her everywhere way about her. Cue Thanatos, the God of Death who does start following her and protecting her, but not out of the goodness of his heart, he wants her soul. When people start dying and she’s the only one around people start wondering who is she and why does death follow her everywhere she goes? As she learns why she seems to be cursed, she has choices to make that will affect not only her future but those around her. This story is perfect for fans of Greek Mythology and who love a good slow burn.
It only took me 3 days to read this book onlllly because I have a day job :( buttt….
I absolutely loved this book. If you like supernatural and greek mythology, enmies to lovers, this is an amazing read! I can not wait for the next book to come out! Seph is "cursed" and she is followed by death. He wants her soul, she is determined to keep it. If you want to know what happens you will have to read it for yourself. I will warn that the ending will have you thinking "Rinn... I need more!" This was my first ARC read, and l am so gratefull to be one of the first people to read it! I will be buying this book as soon as it is for sale!
When I saw this had Greek mythology, a cursed FMC, a mysterious God of Death, and a slow burn romance I knew I had to read this!
Rely on Death by Rinn Marrell is a dark, gothic romantasy that follows Seph (FMC), a woman who has experienced tragic loss and seems to have death following her everywhere. And then you’ve got Thanatos (MMC), the literal God of Death, who may be the only one capable of saving her… but it may cost both of them.
I really enjoyed the darker atmosphere and how Greek mythology was woven into the story. Between the curses, prophecies, secrets, and morally questionable characters, there was plenty to keep me reading.
The relationship between Seph and Thanatos is definitely a slow burn. Their relationship is filled with tension, distrust, and that constant question of whether he can actually be trusted.
I also appreciated the emotional depth of Seph’s character. Her grief, loneliness, and struggle to let people get close to her added more to the story.
The pacing is on the slower side, especially at the beginning as the world and characters are being established.
Tropes + atmosphere: Dark romantasy Greek mythology God x mortal Enemies to lovers Slow burn Cursed FMC Forced proximity Touch her and 💀 Found family Hidden identity
Overall, this was a great introduction to The Shadowed Pantheon series. I’m excited to see where the story goes next! A huge thank you to the author and The Indie Author Insider for the eARC!
I toyed with what to put my rating after that ending because RINN WHAT DO YOU MEAAAAAAAAN?! I could genuinly not book this book down, I wanted to read until 2am to finish it but I had work :( but the story had me GRIPPED.
Persephone is the only survivor of an accident in which her family died and now she is believed to be cursed by everyone in the town. Now mythological beings are after her and the God of Death wants to help her but the only way is to give him her soul.
*age gap (immortal god) *god of death x human *virgin fmc *grief *greek mythology
Okay now spoilers below because I need to get it out.
I received an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was an enjoyable read. The pace was good & the story flowed well. I liked the way that the Greek mythology was woven through the story, not too much to overshadow, but enough to give extra background & context to some of the characters. This is a story about friendship, best friends stepping up, resilience, self doubt, tragedy & suspicion. There's just a little bit of spice that works very well. I felt sorry for Seph, at what she went through & how she was & is treated. I liked how the end wasn't a total cliffhanger & how the questions I have, feel like they will be answered in book 2, not because anything was missing, but because of the natural progression of the story.
Before the prologue was even done, I was completely invested and adding this book to my cart so that I can have my own copy, and I already know who I will be lending it to the second I get it. Wow. I have a hard time believing that this is a debut novel because it’s so incredibly well done. Count me in for book two and anything else you want to grace us with! I received an advanced copy in exchange for this review.
I really enjoyed this book. It was an interesting premise and the writing was beautiful. I loved the characters and found myself truly immersed within the pages of this book.
Advanced Reader Copy Review: Persephone, an avid Greek Mythology enthusiast, a girl followed by Death so much so she was thought cursed. However, Death was not her curse, it was the god himself, Thanatos, that had his immortal sight set on Seph, and struck a bargain for her soul.
As a huge nerd for the greek mythos, I was definitely lured by the aspect of the book. And boy was it worth it. The world building definitely took me the longest to visualize, but once I got the hang of it I was hooked. I inhaled this book in less than 12 hours and was immediately upset that I had to wait for the other two. Everyone knows never to trust a god, never to strike a bargain with a god. Tell me WHY all these rules flew out the window with Thanatos? Because Rinn had me EATING UP everything he was dishing out, and frankly I would have folded a lot faster than Seph, so props to her for that strength. Now onto our girl, Seph is such a real character that I was feeling everything she was feeling. She wasn't fearless, she wasn't flawless, and I appreciated the complexity of her human psychology, because in her shoes none of us would have behaved any more rationally. The ending had my jaw ON THE FLOOR. Because I seriously should've known. Matter fact, I DID know, but I chose to un-know for Thanatos 3. The spice level was perfect, especially for the material provided. The sexy scenes had me giggling, kicking my feet and the slow burn was eating me alive (even though I should not have been encouraging it). The pace of the book made sense, the plot twists had me sitting up at every gut-punch and turn, and at no point did it feel like I was reading unnecessary fillers. The characters played their parts beautifully, and Rinn managed to really encompass how grief and guilt affect relationships.
Lastly, REALLY HAD ME AT KILLING MY BOY. I was doing just fine until you snuffed out that sweet innocent boy. Seriously, Seph caught 0 breaks throughout that book.
Overall, a really fun and captivating read! I can't wait for it to make it out into the world. Definitely a rec for mythos lovers, and those looking for a change of palate.

I absolutely devoured this book! Reading books with Greek gods is always my favorite, but sometimes they feel the same and they’re usually about Hades in some way. But, this book was all about Thanatos, the god of death and Persephone (not THE Persephone, just a girl named after the goddess lol) and I ate it up. Whenever reading books involving Hades and him finding love, I always found myself thinking, “but what about Thanatos?” And this book gave me everything that I wanted and more! Every page of this book felt like a series of unfortunate events in the best way, watching Persephone navigate it all was an absolute journey. Sometimes it felt like this poor girl just couldn’t catch a break. Rinn did an amazing job writing the feelings of grief and how someone navigates it. Her writing honestly is truly amazing and she told Persephone’s and Thanatos’s story so well. The amount of YEARNING that this man shows is just *chef’s kiss*. This book had me giggling and kicking my feet one moment, then the next crying my eyes out. Once I reached the ending I was so upset, why? Because I NEED book 2 in my hands. I loved every moment of this book and I cannot wait until you guys get a chance to read it.
✨Rely on Death releases November 10th, 2026! Get your preorders in!✨
I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not used to reading from a screen, but it took me a while to be locked into this story (over halfway). But once I was, it was amazing and I didn’t want it to end. Though it had a rough and slow start for me, I still ended it with enjoyment and look forward to finding out exactly what’s going on, in book 2!!
First, thank you to the Nerdfam and the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Greek mythology in a modern setting! I really enjoyed all of the references, and how they were woven into the story. Persephone "Seph" has been through so many traumatic instances, and the burden she has to carry made my heart hurt for her. Especially when the entire town then thinks you're cursed and going to off everyone at any given moment...
Frank's father figure stature was so touching! Idk why but I kept picturing him as Charlie Swan from 'Twilight' hehe. Chrstine on the other hand, well, I could have some choice words for her.
My biggest hold up with rating this higher is that the relationship didn't pull me in the way I thought it would (this is definitely a personal preference with when intimate acts take place, so take that with a grain of salt!) but it felt like the obsession didn't align with the timeline. I also didn't feel a fragment of 'enemies-to-lovers', so I do wish that trope tag wouldn't be included because it feels misleading. It's more like an unlikely alliance-turned romance.
As for the ending, I was like 'uhh excuse me?' and then I was like "ohhh, interesting turn of events".
"Maybe the tragedy wasn't that people feared her, but that she started to believe they were right."
What to Expect:
🥀 Slow burn 🔥 🥀 She’s wanted by the Fates 🥀 He’s the god of Death 🥀 LOTS of Greek mythology lore 🥀 A focus on the gods of the Underworld 🥀 Plot twists after plot twists you’ll never expect 🥀 Fantasy in a contemporary setting 🥀 TOUCH HER AND DIE
My Thoughts:
This book takes the time needed to set up the world for the series. The world building is descriptive and necessary, but with many fantasy reads it does make it a bit slower of a read. Most fantasy readers are aware of this and would expect it.
It was easy to connect to the characters and interesting to watch their interactions with each other. I loved the Greek mythology. The supporting characters were also super fun to read about. If you love a fantasy read with mythology roots that leans dark, make sure to check this out!
Thank you to Rinn Marrell for this ARC opportunity!
A silver-haired god of Death with secrets? Of course I’m interested. 😂🖤 The gothic atmosphere and Greek mythology were such a good combination but Seph’s grief gave this story a little more weight than I expected. She’s been through so much and letting anyone close means risking another loss.
Then there’s Thanatos who makes trusting him a very questionable decision. The tension between these two had me invested even when I wasn’t sure what to make of him. This one takes its time building the story but that ending leaves plenty to think about. Definitely go in knowing you’re going to need the next book!

Stay bookish. Keep it wicked. 🖤 Yours between the pages, Kayla📚
Seph was a great, wildly deep character who suffers so much in this story. The grief and sadness was written very well. Thanatos was unpredictable and I happily oscillated from disliking him severely to sorta hating him, while CONSTANTLY mistrusting him. This always makes it fun because you expect him to be bad, but also hope he redeems himself when it comes to her. Their romance was interesting. There was a lot of really cool lore and mythology in this story, which was captivating. I loved the intensity of some scenes as they were absolute page-turners and I refused to take a breath. I couldn’t pinpoint where this story was unfolding, and I really enjoyed sitting back and being surprised left and right, especially with the ending. I’m excited to see where the next book leads us.
Thank you to the author for an advanced reader copy, this review is given voluntarily.
I can’t turn down a Greek mythology retelling and this one did not disappoint! Persephone being a cursed mortal was such an intriguing twist. She’s experienced so much tragedy, but she’s strong, resilient and fiercely protective. Thanatos is everything you want from a god of death; broody, possessive and completely obsessed with possessing Persephone’s soul. Their banter and slow burn romance was so addicting, the mystery and secrets kept me on the edge of my seat and the ending left me begging to the next book! This is one you’ll want at the top of your TBR if you’re a lover of Greek mythology!
This is book 1 in a new series and a new to me author. I'm always drawn to Hades and Persephone retellings (this is not a retelling and I never thought it was), so an FMC named Persephone and God of Death Thanatos intrigued me. Unfortunately, I did DNF fairly early in the book (through Chapter 2) because something about it just wasn't for me. I don't think it’s badly written, it just isn't for me 🤷🏻♀️
