Time After Time #2

Better in Time

Rate this book
Still reeling from a break-up with his first love, Carly, Josh McCarthy is replanting his roots in Los Angeles in an attempt to start over. Once part of South Station Boyz (a teen super-group in the ‘90s), and a lengthy stint with a Broadway theater company, success is something that has always come easily to Josh—at least where his career is concerned. Love, on the other hand, has been a struggle.

With a new role on a hit TV show and a change of scenery, Josh is hoping to get back on track in every aspect of his life, with or without Carly. Meeting model-turned-agent, Abby Levy, should be the answer to his “without Carly” equation. So why do his thoughts keep driving back to her? Every day, to his own detriment, he finds new ways to compare his new love to his old one. He just wants to move on and not feel her absence anymore.

Now faced with another major life decision, Josh decides to take a trip back to the Big Apple—back to Carly—to either reclaim his lost love or to finally gain the closure he needs to move on. What will he decide, and can everything really get Better in Time?

Mel Henry lives in a rural town in central Iowa not far from where she was born and raised. She shares her home with her husband of almost twenty years and a plethora of fur- and scaled-babies. Her three adult children mostly likely fled home in search of peace and quiet.

Mel's first love was books. Her mom read to her before she was even born and continued that tradition long afterward. She's read (or been read) thousands of books in her life and even now, has over three thousand of them on her TBR list. She was born reading, and she jokes that she'll also die reading.

Mel's an avid cook (sometimes by choice), seasoned traveler (always by choice), and a hardcore warrior against chronic Lyme disease (definitely not by choice). She loves Netflix marathons, thunderstorms, and good tea. As a certified introvert, she doesn't do much socially, but enjoys concerts, live theater, and the occasional visit to a book bash.

Mel's first series, a trilogy including Distance and Time, Better in Time, and All This Time can be found exclusively on Amazon.

She's got several projects in the works, but is easily distracted, so when the next book will be released is as much a surprise to her as it is to you. But your patience will be well-rewarded, no doubt.

Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man. I forgot how much these books give me all the feels. The first one made me cry for about two days, and then made me listen to boy bands from my high school days for about a month. This one made me rage for a few hours, cry for another few hours, and I'm on week two of non-stop *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys listening parties. Seriously, what is this lady trying to do to me?

The main reason I loved the first book was because it was every little girl's dream (well, this little girl's dream, at least): meeting your favorite boy bander that you've had a crush on for years and having him fall madly in love with you. Oh my god, right? Carly and Josh were so good together, and it made me scream a little when they broke up the first time. I wanted to dive right into the pages and slap them both. Then...things happened to Carly, and I understood. She had a tough time for awhile, but then she found true love, and I respected her for it, even if I did think she should get her butt to California and patch things up with Josh.

Josh. Oh, Josh.

Josh gets himself in so much trouble in this story. He tries so hard to move on with his life after his breakup with Carly, and even though it seems that he has everything (big role on a hit show, a beautiful house in the hills, friends that try their best to cheer him up), he knows he's missing something big. When he reconnects with Abby, a former lover of his, he thinks that he's found that missing piece.

I'm not saying this because I'm a devoted follower of Carly, but Abby was wrong for Josh. From the moment she showed up, I knew she was wrong for him. I don't care if he loves her and wants to marry her. She's wrong and no one likes her and she should just get out of everyone's lives.

I might have reverted back to my fifteen-year-old mentality while reading this, and it was totally fun.

The first part of this book was a quick rehashing of what happened in the first book, but told from Josh's POV, and I didn't mind it so much. It was nice to know what he was thinking and that I could blame him completely for things because he was just being such a guy. But then it turns into Josh's own story, and we cross paths with the first book every now and again. I adore that these people are in their thirties and still messing up (preaching to the choir, characters). They're still learning about life and haven't gotten everything figured out. Sometimes when I read "adult" literature, the characters are twenty-five and have everything neatly organized.

And there I am, eating mac and cheese and wondering if there's a new episode of SpongeBob on.

So, it was really nice to read about people my age (a little older, okay?) that are stumbling through life, trying to figure out where they belong. I think there should be more of these. I know that not every adult acts like a teenager, but, come on. We do it more than we think. Why do you think adults read so much YA lit? I, for one, love to read it and think to myself, ah, I remember being that young and stupid...wait. I'M STILL LISTENING TO *NSYNC.

And that is so not a bad thing.

As for the second book in a series, this was shorter than the first book, focusing more on what happen to Josh after he left Carly to chase after his dream. Neither was prepared for the strain that his music and band would put on their relationship. Trying to plan a future was even more difficult because of her independence and fears and his strong desire to make it huge.

When a chance at a starring role in a television show came up, it meant Carly would have to leave New York and follow him to California or they would have to break up their relationship. She hated California; she hated the idea of giving up everything she had earned in worked for in New York. It wasn’t an easy choice but he had to follow his dreams and she needed to let him do it alone.

This book tells us what happen to him after the move. How do you replace the love of your life? You meet a beautiful model who is now working as an agent. Josh worked hard at making Abby fit into the mold that Carly left. You will find out if she ever fit or not in the book but he had to take one more trip back to New York. He had to see if there was anything left between him and Carly, get a taste of the life he left behind, the friends he longed to see.

Leaving everything to move across the country may have not been worth the career he was promised. Finding love with Abby may not be enough. Can anything ever replace what he had with Carly and why was it not enough to put it before everything.

I love this series; it is such a battle between love and independence. Sometimes the answer that feels the safest isn’t always the correct on and soon Josh and Carly will understand that. Make sure you read book one first, Distance and Time so you will fully understand Better in Time. This is about a love story, that is true, but it is more about life, choices, emotions, regrets and dreams. The characters will take you all over the map and leave you wanting more.

Reviewed on behalf of 2 Girls Who Love Books Blog.

Josh went to pursue his dreams in Los Angeles. But he is having a hard time letting "Coop" go.
During an event he runs into Abby Levy. He struggles to give Abby his all but he finds himself comparing Abby to Carly. He soon realizes that Abby may be the perfect fit for him.

He has to find closure with Carly in order to move on. Josh takes a trip to New York to do just that. Josh is faced with some news that may change everything.

This book was real emotional for me. You experience love and heartache.
There was a lot more to this book that was in listed in this review.
It was excellent.. Can't wait to dig into the next book, All This Time.

I loved binge reading this short novella, second in series by Mel Henry. The story runs concurrent to second half of her first book, Distance and Time giving us a look inside Josh's head from the point he leaves Carly in the airport and boards his plane for LA.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella as I wondered why Josh (apparently) didn't fight harder, return to NYC, what happened to the close relationship between Ma and Carly and then the bombshell wedding. This novella filled all the Swiss cheese holes left behind by Book One's gutting and made me not hate Josh so much. I can't say the same for Abby....but form your own opinions.

I read this novella in one quick sitting and one clicking the next book...

I loved Distance and Time, and once I saw the second book was out, I bought it and began to read it. It's a novella that shows Josh's POV of the events that happened in the first book (which was Carly's POV). I loved this book! I just love the storyline because it's every girls dream of dating a member in a boy band come true. Although, I wish it ended differently, but then it wouldn't have matched up to the first book. And to see it will have a third book in the series, I'm super excited to read it.

I love Mel Henry's imagination and writing. Can't wait to read the next installment! 5 stars!!!

This book is Josh's side of his story to tell about his love for Carly. About how it hurt him and trying to move on with Abby. I must admit i felt Josh was a bit harsh seeing if Abby could fill the role Carly left to a degree, bit of a mean move in my head. Josh though has to see if Carly could ever be what he truly wants. Again some surprises along the way i did not see coming and good to see a mans POV on the story, just did not connect with the book as much as book 1
