Nadia Oxford’s semi-autobiographical work primarily addresses the narrative elements of select historical (God that makes me feel OLD) and contemporary video games in a manner that both non-game players and experienced game players can appreciate.

There’s a lot here and I’m sure I’ve missed something but primarily - historical information about select video games that those interested in such things will enjoy - touching life experiences about how video game narratives shaped one writer’s development and style - and side splitting humor that if you’re not in tune with 80s, 90s, and 00s video games and fandom, you will still enjoy, and if you are in tune with 80s, 90s, and 00s video games you will LOVE.

Oxford writes and provides context into games in a way that the non video-games inclined person will understand and the video-games attuned person will embrace, particularly if they existed in the 80s, 90s, or 00s.

In sharing her life experiences of how video games shaped her writing development and style, the book drips with Oxford’s unique sense of humor and every page is filled with laughs and a heart that transcends generations - after I devoured this text while on the beach (I LOATHE the beach and this book made it enjoyable) my 12-year old and 11-year old also snatched it and I caught them grinning wildly even though I’m not certain they’re old enough to get all the jokes. From dedication to special thanks there’s quality chuckles in this book.

I guess that’s my way of saying I think the book is appropriate for most ages, with the caveat that younger kids that don’t get the jokes won’t be harmed, and older kids that get all the jokes are already more worldly and experienced than you think they are, mom and dad. >:) It’s a quick read too - if you like video games but are intimidated by books in general or large 400 page tomes, give this one a try.

Last but not least: family testimonials!

“It’s good and it’s funny too.” - Boy 1, Age 12

“Give me the book it’s my turn!” - Boy 2, Age 11

“If someone’s ever told you that video games will rot your brain, or you believe otherwise, give them this book. It provides plenty of evidence to the contrary and I also believe they’ll enjoy the the ride.”- Dad 1, Age 43

Nadia's book is equal parts autobiography, gaming history, and a nostalgic time capsule of growing up as an '80s kid in Ontario, Canada. Every paragraph is filled with humor as she recounts her relationship with video games and how they shaped her journey as a writer. I initially planned to read a chapter a day, but I got so sucked in that I lost my entire Sunday morning and afternoon to it. It's a fantastic book which I highly recommended.

A delightful read from start to finish that is a mixture of history lesson, nostalgia, and a pure love of storytelling in the form of video games.
