Rome, 390 A.D. Alexander has led his legions against some big armies in the past, but he has never battled half an empire before now. Emperor Theodosius, a fervent Christian, orders Alexander to eradicate the pagans and heretics from his provinces. Even Jews are no longer safe under the law. But those religions include far more than impersonal foes of Alexander. He finds himself pitted against good friends, his dear sister, and his male lover.

He reluctantly destroys the ancient shrines. His soldiers crush dissent from mobs of enraged pagans. With each temple he topples and every idol he plunders, a divided world hurtles toward civil war. The conflict sours his bond with his lover, whose father serves as high priest for a pagan god. Alexander begs the Emperor to rescind his decree, but Theodosius refuses a truce. The strife driving him apart from everyone he cares most about, Alexander conspires with a rebel group to usurp the throne and restore peace.

Alexander can't afford to continue obeying Theodosius, who has declared passion between men a capital crime. For now, his forbidden love is a secret. But nothing remains hidden forever in the cutthroat realm of imperial politics. Alexander draws his sword for the fight of his life.

a little depressing but still a beautiful story that perfectly illustrates how the Roman government corrupted the Church once church and state were united.
