I like many poems here but feel that the selection of entries in the entire book is somehow uneven. Will articulate this in some more detail in the future.

An activist and recently a political prisoner, Ericson Acosta wrote most of the poems in this book at night in his prison cell. He was in the same Literary Festival that I attended (and where I also bought RM Topacio-Aplaon's novel) and I asked him how hard it had been, and how different from the way he usually writes his poetry. There is no tranquility in his 'Mula Tarima Hanggang' poems. There's raw emotion, black humour, anger, and always, the cry for justice and freedom. It's not only for himself that Acosta writes but also for the people he is fighting with, the victims of our country's government, and the political prisoners who don't even officially exist.

It was probably not a good idea to read the bulk of these poems in public. They made me cry out, made chills run down my spine, and sometimes I cried. Not always beautiful and well-formed, but always always powerful.

This book includes poetry that Acosta wrote over the years, and it was nice to see how they differed from his 'prison poems'. While the 'Mula Tarima Hanggang' poems were--as I keep saying--powerful, my favourites are the 'Pambihira' poems. These were quiet, melancholy, with the undercurrent emotions that we see full force in 'Mula Tarima Hanggang'.

I don't really read a lot of poetry, but this is something that everyone needs to read.

Paborito ko ang mga tulang "And So Your Poetry Must" at "Walang Kalabaw sa Cubao".
