If, like me, you loved Murdoku Volume 1, then this sequel will be right up your alley! In fact, I consider “Murdoku Volume 2: Back in Time” to be superior in every way to the first volume. (I’m already clamoring for the third volume of puzzles, to be released in October.)
Murdoku Volume 2 is a significant improvement over its predecessor. Several shortcomings from the original volume were fixed and new features were included to add spice, variety, and challenge to the puzzles.
To begin with, one of the shortcomings in Volume 1: The puzzle grid did not have any squares blocked off, requiring the reader to block squares that were occupied in the puzzle. This is fine, except that on more than one occasion I overlooked a potted plant or a desk and failed to block the corresponding square on the grid, with the result that I was either unable to solve the puzzle without peeking in the back to discover my error or that I tricked myself into a logical contradiction. This could be remedied by taking more care and exercising more attention to detail, but was still inconvenient. The second shortcoming is that the reader also had to invent notation for chairs and cars and other “special” squares, which could look sloppy or become confusing. Both of these problems were fixed in Volume 2: the puzzle grid shaded in non-occupiable squares and had a notation system for the various types of “special” squares. This made the puzzles much more convenient and user friendly!
The final flaw from Volume 1 was that the puzzles progressed in difficulty from easy to quite hard over the course of all 80 puzzles. This is all well and good— variable levels of challenge are absolutely necessary. But the way this was done meant that the first 45 puzzles were almost boringly easy, and the last ten or so puzzles could be maddeningly difficult back to back to back. In Volume 2, the puzzles are broken into thematic “chapters,” and the difficulty progresses from easy to hard in each chapter. This means that the really tricky puzzles are spread out, and then the difficulty level resets at the end of each chapter, giving a little mental breathing space. This made the puzzles much more engaging.
New features in this volume include the aforementioned thematic chapters, which add a sense of cohesion and unity to the puzzles, and make it possible to include an overarching story arc in the same vein as the Murdle puzzles. (In this case, a detective solves a crime in a lab with a Time Machine and gets thrust backwards in time, navigating through the millennia trying to find his way back to the present.) I like the overall concept; it added a taste of the exotic and some atmosphere, which made the puzzling and reading experience much more enjoyable… but I’m a sucker for the right kind of atmosphere. I especially adore ancient Egypt, the European Medieval period, and all things pirate, so this was a much appreciated touch.
Finally, each chapter (and this was a stroke of brilliance!) introduced a new rule. In one chapter, there were special “glyph” squares that, if occupied, made certain demands. In another chapter, characters were restricted to Noble areas or Peasant areas (except for the Knights who could be anywhere). In another, there were a certain number of unknown “outlaws” amongst the suspects who needed to be identified to solve the puzzle correctly. These fun new additions kept the puzzles interesting and stopped them from becoming repetitive.
In short: “Murdoku 2: Back in Time” is a blast! It’s even better than the original both in terms of setting and the in the diversity and quality of the puzzles. I can hardly wait for Murdoku Volume 3 to be released! I’ve already pre-ordered my copy.

These continue to be FUN and also deeply challenging.
I loved that Volume 2 introduces different mechanics. My favorite chapters were the medieval/royalty and Ancient Egypt.

Some good brain training! I did not do them all or all the time periods, as at a certain point, it became too difficult for me. Will return to it in quiet evenings.
It plays like the Old Mine Sweeper game, but it is more entertaining and cutely illustrated.

If you know me, you know I love a puzzle book! I enjoyed Murdoku Volume 1, but I LOVED Murdoku Volume 2. The theming for each section, plus additional challenges and roles used to satisfy each series of clues, was a delight. The subtle changes from era to era helped keep the puzzles fresh. It's also nice that the answer key explains each solution clearly so you can easily check your work.
Did Not Finish

This isn’t really a book I would normally mention here. It’s a book of puzzles. But, I’m rating this anyway because it is awesome! I’m 25 puzzles in and addicted. These puzzles get progressively harder by chapter and they are such twisters they call on real logic skills and problem-solving. I love it. I’m going to buy all three volumes.

even better than the first one!! very challenging and the different rules make it more interesting. cant wait for the next volume!

“Murdoku Volume 2” by Manuel Garand is not a traditional novel, but a puzzle book built around 80 murder mystery logic challenges. Its main appeal is the way it combines the satisfaction of sudoku-style deduction with the atmosphere of a crime story, turning each puzzle into a small mystery scene that the reader has to solve through clues, logic, and careful attention to detail. The book is designed to feel playful, immersive, and steadily more difficult as it moves forward, making it both a brain teaser and a storytelling experience.
The book’s setup is simple but clever. A mysterious time machine sends the solver backwards through different historical eras, and each chapter or section places the reader in a new setting with its own visual style, rules, and puzzle mechanics. Instead of solving the same kind of grid over and over, the reader is dropped into the Stone Age, medieval times, Ancient Egypt, the Golden Age of Piracy, and the Wild West. Each era gives the puzzles a different mood, so one case may involve a temple, another a pirate cove, another a tavern, and another a frontier town. The time-travel frame gives the book variety and keeps the experience from feeling repetitive.
At the center of each puzzle is a murder mystery that must be unraveled by placing suspects correctly on a grid. The clues tell the reader where each person, object, or detail belongs, and the goal is to figure out who was alone with the victim, which in turn reveals the killer. The solving process depends on deduction rather than guesswork, so the book rewards patience, pattern recognition, and logical thinking. The puzzles are presented in full color and are heavily illustrated, which makes them feel more like mini crime scenes than abstract number games.
One of the book’s biggest strengths is that it is accessible to different kinds of solvers. The puzzles are said to range from easier warm-up challenges to much harder late-book cases, so beginners can learn the system while experienced puzzlers still have room to be tested. That progression creates a sense of momentum, since each success builds confidence while the later mysteries demand more concentration. The book is meant to be addictive in the best sense: each solved grid gives a feeling of completion, but the next case immediately invites another round of detective work.
The visual storytelling is also a major part of the appeal. Every crime scene is packed with small details, and those details matter because they help the solver place suspects and eliminate possibilities. The settings are not just decorative; they are part of the logic. Furniture, animals, objects, and environmental clues all become part of the deduction process, which makes the puzzles feel richer than a standard grid exercise. The full-color artwork helps each mystery feel distinct, and the historical settings give the whole book a playful sense of adventure.
The overall structure of the book suggests a journey as much as a puzzle collection. The reader is not just solving disconnected cases; they are traveling through time while trying to find their way home. That frame gives the book a light narrative spine, enough to make the sequence of puzzles feel like one long expedition through history. The historical chapters create the feeling of moving from one world to another, while the recurring murder-mystery format keeps the challenge consistent. The result is a book that feels both varied and cohesive.
“Murdoku” is a clever mix of logic puzzle book, time-travel adventure, and murder mystery game. It offers 80 self-contained cases that ask the reader to think like a detective, use visual and verbal clues carefully, and solve each scene with methodical reasoning. The book’s charm lies in the combination of rich illustration, historical imagination, and clean deductive structure. It is meant for anyone who enjoys puzzles that feel a little more theatrical than usual, and for readers who like the idea of solving crimes one grid at a time while hopping across history.

From not being able to put vol1 down to barely wanting to pick this up. I do like different sections of the book rather than just progressively getting more difficult but it's just been over complicated. The squares are often too dark and a biro has little impact, end up overlooking squares, and some of the planning grids at the bottom are just way too small to fit more than one letter in. The lines don't always match up in the "rooms". Hope vol 3 is more like vol 1! Really disappointed with this, was so excited for it.

When I thought that Murdoku Volume 2 couldn’t get better than Volume 1, I was wrongggg!!! The author updated many things to make this book better than the first and I absolutely loved Volume 1.
For this book, they added more plots/storylines and additions to keep things fresh as well as shaded regions for the “cannot be occupied” spots so you can solve the puzzles with more ease.
LOVE Murdoku and I cannot wait for Volume 3! I’ve had this book for less than 24 hours and have already done 6 puzzles in a row because I genuinely love this book so much.

September 6, 2026I love Murdoku! It is a treat to do these puzzles - they are engaging and visually appealing. I love the concept of back in time but wish that this murdoku was structured more similarly to the first book. The first book had great pacing, with a few easier puzzles, then most in the intermediate level (9X9), with a few really challenging puzzles at the end. This book shifts rapidly from easy to hard (in each section) with fewer intermediate puzzles. I'm hoping book 3 will have a lot more intermediate puzzles. Looking forward to the next book - thanks for creating these!

I had high hopes for this book, as I like puzzles (but not Sudoku) and this book has beautiful color illustrations. The easier puzzles were quite fun, but then they became more complex and the characters were often placed in locations without adequate explanation of why they were there and not in 2 or more other possible locations. This volume had better instructions than Volume 1, but I found it just as frustrating. I won’t be buying Volume 3.

I was so surprised to not only see volume 2 but volume 1 included in my giveaway. Thank you to the publishers!! That was too kind. I worked my way through book 1 and I’m hooked. I started volume 2 and am obsessed with the 80’s theme. I hope that they continue to create these! Perfect before bed puzzles!

From fairly simple brain teasers to mind-boggling puzzles, this book has it all.
In a twist on the first book, there's now extra factors incorporated into each puzzle such as finding out who had a particular role or who the outlaw is. Each section of the book is based in different time periods which adds to the enjoyment.
It certainly gets the little grey cells going!

Amazing 😍 it is so addictive for people like me that like puzzle enigmas but that have seen too many sodokus of different kinds. It's really tricky and makes you use your brain for real. I started with the second volum because I got it as a gift, but I have already bought the first one.

This one was for sure better than the last one - loved the different types of puzzles and theming! Can’t wait for the next one!

Such a fun brain book. My daughter loves doing them with me. Sometimes we do them as a family. It’s like sudoku and clue mixed together.
