Aaliyah Carter only came to the family cookout for good food, loud laughs, and maybe a plate to take home. She did not come looking for love.
Then Malcolm Carter showed up.
He’s handsome, calm, respectful, and grown-grown. The kind of man who knows how to fix things, keep his word, and stand tall under pressure. Unfortunately for Aaliyah, her mama sees one thing he is forty-two, she is twenty-eight, and absolutely nobody is about to play with her baby.
What starts as harmless flirting turns into a full family investigation complete with nosy aunties, stolen ribs, a dramatic ex, an uncle running background checks by the grill, and a mama who treats Aaliyah’s dating life like a community safety meeting.
But the more Malcolm proves himself, the more Aaliyah has to ask herself one is he really too grown, or is he exactly the kind of grown man she deserves?
My Mama Said He Too Grown is a funny, fast-paced urban rom-com short story full of Black family chaos, cookout comedy, age gap tension, sweet romance, and one unforgettable mama who is not playing.
This quick read had me laughing. My Mama Said He Too Grown really hit home for me and had me understanding the mama’s perspective and loved how she showed her love dressed in sarcasm and honesty. The way Aaliyah handles her family and all the little obstacles was definitely grown woman status. I’m running to tell my friends to read this story. Indya you did your thing in this short story, invite me to the next cookout, so I can meet my too grown man, lol
It’s a good read that will keep you laughing from being to end. It’s like you’re at a cookout with your family. With everyone in everyone business lol. It’s a quick read that doesn’t make you feel like you are missing anything.
This book is different. Really had two scenes (the cookout and then the date) but it was fun commentary throughout the book. It gave what a family would experience if one of the young girls brought an old man to meet the family.
