She is a strange, small, almost mute, young woman who has no idea that her father has given her to the Vampire King Krieger. Walter Ayres is the King’s Keeper and part of a secret society of historians who unearth, preserve, and attempt to understand relics of long forgotten civilizations.

Lily has never felt comfortable in the human world, but after she suspiciously falls down a flight of stone steps, and is healed and claimed by Krieger, she realizes there is another world. In this Other Realm she feels a sense of belonging, and begins to untwine the mysterious event which left her mentally and psychologically damaged. When Walter disappears in England, Lily works with human and supernatural beings to uncover his whereabouts. With each new discovery, she is pulled deeper into the vortex of magic, intrigue, and dark desires that permeates the supernatural world. It was one of those days. I had just finished the second book in the Gemini Rising series and sent it to the editor. After making notes about the next book, I breathed a sigh of relief and checked my e-mail. There was The Last Keeper's Daughter along with a request that I read Rebecca Trogner's latest book and write a review.

I downloaded the PDF expecting to save it to my Kindle. I did something wrong and it ended up in 'my documents'. I opened it, thinking I'd just read the first chapter. Three days later I still hadn't downloaded the novel because frankly, I didn't want to take the time to do it.

I usually write a general synopsis then a review. Yes, this is a vampire novel, the MC is a sweet, shy young girl who feels out of place in the world and her 'savior' is the Northern Hemisphere's Vampire king.

Books like this have been done before, yet there is something different here. Something that kept me reading obsessively.

What grabbed me about The Last Keeper's Daughter was the sensitivity used in its writing. Ms. Trogner has the keen ability to reach inside of someone and pull out their essence. You don't need descriptive flowery language that tells you how they look, you can actually see into their souls.

If you're looking for something to raise your body temperature this is not the book for you (although there are some erotic scenes). However, if you want to read something outside of hard core sex and take a step backward into a more gracious time, you will love this book.

I know what you're thinking. (Yes, you there, with a skeptical eyebrow raised.) Do we really need another vampire novel where the young, seemingly fragile human girl (who's much stronger than she looks) manages to break through the icy heart (who's much more vulnerable than he looks) of the 2000-year old vampire? And the answer is undoubtedly YES. If we're talking about Rebacca Trogner's The Last Keeper's Daughter, that is. Sure, the basic idea is familiar within the genre, but Trogner isn't writing your typical paranormal romance. In a beautifully restrained voice that trusts her readers to fill in some of the blanks (rather than over-telling and over-describing), The Last Keeper's Daughter sets up a complex and interesting world where (supernatural) Others live among humans. There are layers upon layers of mystery and intrigue and questions the characters (and the reader) are desperate to answer. There's plenty of danger and beautiful men to oogle, and it's romantic without being smutty. I fully intended to read "just one more chapter" until I finished the entire thing in the wee hours because I didn't want to stop. I had to know what happens next! While this novel feels complete, it's also a perfect set-up for a series. There is so much more of this story to tell. Please, Ms. Trogner, can I have some more?

Walter Ayers, the last son of one of Virginia’s old money families, owns a massive home on a sprawling estate, complete with it’s own cemetery and a whole wing that is forbidden to enter. Its summer, but a fire burns in the secret library’s hearth for the pleasure of a guest. Walter is a member of a secret order, the ‘keeper’ assigned to the King of North America, and Krieger Barnes has come to hear an odd request. The aging man is dying and fears his clandestine life will bring harm to his daughter, so he asks the king to take his daughter. In 2000 years, Krieger has never brought a human into his court. He is reluctant to do so now, but it is strange of a human father to offer his daughter to a vampire, and he’s intrigued.

Rebecca Trogner has an unusual voice that blends simple prose with stream of consciousness. This works particularly well with her lead female, Lily Ayers, a timid woman with the character traits of autism. She is highly intelligent, but timid, selectively mute, and highly sensitive to sound. Also, she can remember every face she’s ever seen and where she’s seen them, a talent she considers a curse and thus avoids meeting new people. We learn a lot about Lily in her first scene as she arrives a friend’s store at a scheduled time to be closed, uses the back door because the front has bells, and counts her steps to avoid a creaky board in the floor. Lily’s friends, accustomed to interacting with her over years, help her communicate to the reader who she is under the skin by responding to her body language.

In the first chapter, Krieger Barnes comes across as cold, calculating man. Born during the reign of Augustus Caesar, he’s born witness to the depths of what people are capable, human and otherwise. Like Joss Whedon’s Angel, these experiences have shaped Krieger into a man who is both a cold killer and yet just to fault. Unlike Angel, he has always had a soul. He is cautious regarding his personal relationships but not uncaring, and the author provides many ways for the reader to relate, even empathize, with the vampire king.

The Last Keeper’s Daughter is a mystery, as the first chapter clearly suggests, one that spans several generations of the Ayers Family and culminating within Lily herself. She is special, something between human and “Other,” and also more than both. The danger lays in the fact that Krieger and his inner circle, (a witch, a wolf shifter, and a slayer), are not the only people who know. Still, as much as Krieger is bound by blood and primal instinct to protect Lily, he cannot keep her caged to ensure it. The clues are specific to her, one, and two, she bristles at being treated as a child. So, solving the puzzle that is Lily and winning her love can only be accomplished if Krieger gives up his need to control every circumstance. It would try the patience of most men, let alone an ancient vampire king.

Given the stream of consciousness aspect, I feel that prose could have been stronger if the author had used deep third POV. Also, and it was possibly just overlooked in editing, but second person POV pulled me out of the narration on two occasions. But, the minor issues of voice aside, I very much enjoyed The Last Keeper’s Daughter. The story is intriguing. The characters are captivating, each with allure and mystery. The plot gives us a crack into a much larger story and all the implements necessary to rip the world wide open. I’m looking forward to the next book.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

There are many new novels to choose from these days about my favorite fanged character, the vampire, and I often spend days sorting through new titles, reading blurbs and samples, trying to choose my next purchase. I scanned through the blurb on The Last Keeper’s Daughter by Rebecca G. Trogner and thought it sounded interesting, so I read a couple pages from the prologue and that was it. I’m totally hooked. I love it when the author can bring across danger in a powerful vampire and I knew from the first two pages here that the main character would be one I would connect with. But what really sets the hook, at least for this reader anyway, is learning about the softer side of his nature, the part of him that can still love a simple human woman. In this story, Krieger is the vampire king and he fits the bill perfectly in all areas. But face it, what good is everlasting life if you don’t have someone there to love and share it with you? And me, being a hopeless romantic, I want to share their experience with them.

Lily Ayres is the woman who catches Krieger’s attention. Her father approaches him, asking for a personal favor. Take care of his only daughter, Lily, in exchange for the life he has spent working for the king as his Keeper. Krieger agrees to do so, not intending to watch over her personally, but after meeting Lily, finds he can’t stand the idea of anyone else doing it. When she is mortally injured not long after he first meets her, Krieger must give her his blood or she will die, creating a bond between him and Lily that can’t be broken. But he can’t force her to love him, that part has to be earned. Like most ancient vampires I read about, he tends to be a little on the bossy side. But Lily isn’t as meek as people think when they first meet her.

Though I love the romance part of this story, there is much more going on than a simple love affair. There is a lot more to Lily than first meets the eye and Krieger needs to learn why anyone would want her dead. Hunter,a human detective is brought into the picture, one who has just learned about the supernatural world Krieger rules over. He is trying to help the vampire king learn who is behind the death of Lily’s father and other key people in their society. I have to admit I felt a slight disappointment when I reached the end of this novel, because not everything going on felt tied up for me, but I see where there is room for a sequel and I’ll definitely be standing in line to pick it up when released. The Last Keeper’s Daughter is not only a great romance, but also a great mystery in the works. I’m certain other readers will enjoy it as much as I did.

I was on book tour for The Last Keeper’s Daughter back in February with an excerpt and giveaway. After reading the excerpt I knew I wanted to read this book!

“Do you want me, Lily?”
“I don’t know what I want.” It was the honest truth.
“I could force you.” He held up his hand. “I could bend your body to my will with one finger.”
She wasn’t afraid that he’d hurt her. “That’s not what you want.”
His arm fell to his side. “True.” He looked sad.
She hoped he didn’t expect a response, because she was too stunned by the conversation to think of anything to say.
“You’re pure, and clean, and light. I’ve killed men, and women, and children. I was a soldier long before I became a vampire. Is it possible for you to love a creature such as me?” Krieger didn’t wait for a response. “I’ve overwhelmed you, haven’t I?” His smile was kind. “You have nothing to fear from me. Come.” He held his hand out to her.
Like the night they met, she slipped her hand into his.

Doesn't this sound like a romance you want to read happen??? Yeah! Me too.

This totally sounded like a paranormal romance I could devour in a few hours… And that is halfway what happened.

The first half of The Last Keeper’s Daughter was hard to get through. I would continually have to read pages and paragraphs over trying to understand the story better, or to figure out what character was speaking. I honestly think that one or two more edits and this could have been cleared up because the second half of the book was so fast and a pleasure to read.

I didn’t care for Lily at all when I first started reading, but as the story progressed I found myself intrigued by all the mystery surrounding her. I liked that Lily had so much character growth from such a quiet girl in the beginning to a woman who took an active role in her own life by the end of TLKD.

Krieger I liked right from the get go. Um, hello… Badass vampire king, how could I not love his character?!?! Krieger is also very good at what he does. He knows how to deal with all the… Um, “people” under him to keep peace amongst everyone. Introducing Lily to all the different rules of her new life doesn’t always go so smoothly, but he does his best to protect her.

From the romance that I enjoyed, to side characters that I would love to read more about, I did enjoy The Last Keeper’s Daughter. After the first part of the story this became a real page turner and if Rebecca Trogner writes more in this world I will definitely want to read it.

I'd probably categorise The Last Keeper's Daughter as more of a Paranormal Mystery as opposed to a Paranormal Romance, but I'll come to that in a bit.

The book opens with Walter Ayres, a 'Keeper', speaking - pleading - with the man whose secrets he keeps - Krieger - the Vampire King, forever frozen in time at around thirty years of age, and battle hardened from his Roman upbringing.

Fearing his time on this earth is short, he begs Krieger to take care of his daughter, Lily, after he is gone, and Krieger reluctantly agrees. Soon after, Walter disappears without a trace.

Lily is a peculiar girl. She functions like the rest of us - for the most part - she drives a car, and rides horses, but she's a selective mute, and is hyper-sensitive to her surroundings with a photographic memory of every person she's met since the age of six. She's also somewhat sickly, and small for her age.

All that changes after a freak accident requires Krieger to give her some of his blood, and he quickly realises that Lily isn't as human as he originally thought, and he becomes swiftly enamoured with her.

Across the pond at a small church a brutal murder, sacrificial in its nature, has drawn the attention of the 'Others' - the supernatural. We're introduced to Hunter the cop, who's not too dissimilar to Butch from J.R. Ward's BDB, as his involvement in the investigation leads to his assimilation into the supernatural world.

There are two storylines going on here; the disappearance of Walter Ayres, and the not-quite relationship between Lily and Krieger (hence my description of mystery over romance). While the book's finale is a good one (it made me say "ew," and that's quite hard to achieve), I kept feeling like there was something I couldn't quite put my finger on - a missing spark. At times, I felt as though Lily was displaying Stockholm Syndrome tendencies with the way she acquiesced to some of Krieger's demands, and I wondered if any romantic feelings were influenced by Krieger. In spite of his assurances that he would not manipulate her emotions in that way, some of Lily's reactions (and actions) didn't always seem to be in keeping with her character.

Nevertheless, The Last Keeper's Daughter is a quick read, and I particularly enjoyed delving into Krieger's past.

Over all, a three out of five.

Genre: Paranormal/Vampire
Author: Rebecca Trogner
Book: The Last Keeper’s Daughter
My Star Rating: 5 out of 5
Will I read I read it again? Yes
Intro: To the outside world Lily Ayres is the privileged daughter of an old moneyed family. She is young, beautiful, and a talented horsewoman. All of which are enviably qualities, but few know that beneath this thin veneer of societal perfection lies a deeply troubled young woman. For Lily rarely speaks and is incapable of normal, human interaction.

Unable to understand why she is this way, she further retreats inside herself, until memories and suppressed emotions begin to bubble to the surface. Murder, revelations of her family's hidden purpose and dark secrets are revealed as she is thrust into the supernatural world of Krieger Barnes, Vampire King of North America.

I got to say this book was freaking awesome. From the get go this book grabbed me into this world made by Ms. Trogner and I loved it. I got to say I love all the characters in this book. I felt that this world was explained very well. And I love Krieger!! And Liam! I also love how Lily is coming into her own towards the end of the book.
I also found this to have a little mystery to it as well. Overall I loved it and can’t wait to get into the second book in this series! Although there are still some unanswered questions.

I was given this book to read and give an honest review. This review is my honest opinion and I have fully read this book.

Rebecca Trogner's debut novel introduces a new and intriguing cast of supernatural to the vampire sub-genre. Her heroine, Lily, is an enigma from the beginning. A fragile and damaged young woman, Lily is constantly growing and evolving throughout the story, as she is brought into a vampire king's court. Trying to find out where her father has gone and why he'd give her to this vampire king is part of the mystery Lily must solve.

In fact, mystery and growth are key elements in what is the first book of a new series. Even ancient vampires like Krieger, the vampire king, are growing and changing and that gives this elements of the unusual and surprise. Usually vampires seem unchanging, but not Trogner's.

Blending a new version of the supernatural world with our modern world, Trogner creates a fascinating story. Her characters are rich and believable, with layer upon layer to uncover. Even minor characters have motivations and levels that add to a complex weaving that creates a realistic background.

You won't find predictability here. And that sense of surprise put this series firmly into my To Be Read list. I love when authors go somewhere unexpected and Trogner delivered. Her writing is engaging, the story is well-paced and her mysteries unfold logically. That keeps those pages turning to find out what comes next. Highly reommended.

Wow! I adored this book! This was different from anything I've read, even though one may categorize it as a vampire book. It is soooo much more than that. Lily is a strange, broken character, and getting inside her head was a fascinating experience.

Her family's dark and twisted past unravels slowly throughout the plot as we try to figure out why her father and two other keeper's have been gruesomely murdered. Everything from the mountainous forests her estate rests on, to the varied Others from the supernatural world we meet are gothic and unique.

If someone had tried to tell me what this book was about, I would never have been able to imagine the creative and clever way this story was crafted and layered, each character with a rich backstory.

This story is written with depth and richness and woven together with magic and macabre images. I can't say enough about this book. I highly recommend it to those who love a good paranormal story, and I was thrilled to see another book in this series is on its way.

I wish they'd make this into a movie.

Something completely new and different. I always love when I come across a paranormal book that approaches what has been written about over and over again in a completely new way. Rebecca is an excellent author and a master of her skill. Her book reads incredibly well and is written at a great pace. She weaves and intricate web giving you little by little the information needed to find out more about your main characters.

The main characters are absolutely adorable. Especially Lily is a character that makes you feel for her. Her journey is fantastical. Also Krieger is a very well developed character. These 2 are definitely the favorites in this story but there are some others I couldn't imagine this book without

Thankfully I have book 2 to keep going. Can't wait to read more from this author.

I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)

SERENA'S REVIEW

The Last Keeper’s Daughter is a strange book; I’m not sure myself if that’s a positive or a negative description! There’s a lot of potential and a lot of great characters and new creatures, something that makes the story truly fascinating but somehow, it’s lacking. I hate saying that; I know how Rebecca Trogner, the author, will have slaved over this story, but I felt like a big piece of the puzzle is missing.

I’d give a brief synopsis of what happens here, but it’s all a bit convoluted and even after finishing the book, I’m still not entirely sure of everything. The writing is pretty powerful, enough to keep you hooked and while this is a supernatural story, it’s just a bit much. There are so many things going on that it’s a little hard to focus and in the end, I just felt a bit lost.

I really enjoyed the premise; but the characterization of the main characters was a bit of a let down. Krieger and Lily are the main characters and while we learn a lot about them, it isn’t enough. I didn’t feel as though I really knew them. Lily could be quite irritating and even though her life is up in the air, the way she treated Krieger was just annoying. I was waiting for something to occur between Lily and Krieger; but this book contains no real sexual content (there are some small, inoffensive scenes) and I missed that, I think. Especially between the central pair.

When the story ended, it came as a shock. It’s 300 pages or so and a lot happens, but somehow, it’s not condensed enough. It’s a busy story and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing; but too much is happening without clarification. At the end, mostly everything had been tied up, but I was still waiting for more answers. I’m guessing that there’s another book and I think I’d read it just for further clarification of what was going on; why Lily had visions?; the outcome of her relationship with Krieger; where Lucien fit in; what Nina had to do with the story…

I understand the premise of wanting to hook a reader so they’ll read the next novel, but there are a lot of questions in dire need of answering.

So, what do I rate this story? I like Rebecca Trogner’s writing style. I like her imagination and the plot is fantastic, in the sense that it’s out-of-this-world. I would have preferred for less to be happening though, for me to understand what was going on. The characters were good, not great. Something was missing; a loose end that just kept everything from being tightly woven. Some disturbing things occurred between Lily’s parents – mega disturbing! You’ll see what I mean, when you read it.

This book is classed as Romance/Mystery with the predominant theme of Fantasy. The romance elements are there, but not enough to consider it a romance. Mystery and fantasy; sure, there’s so much stuff happening that I’m dazed! But, that being said, I continued to read it and not just because I had to review it.

WALKI'S REVIEW

Walter Ayres, the last keeper of his line, entrusts his daughter Lily to Krieger Barnes, the Vampire King he has worked for his entire life, before flying to London. Detective Hunter is called to a crime scene where he contemplates the dismembered remains of Walter and another keeper, before being hired by the Elder and discovering there is more to meet the eyes in the world: Vampires, Werewolves, Ancients, Revenants, and more Others. There is also the apparently fragile Lily Ayres. But what is Lily exactly?

This novel has distant echoes of Elizabeth Kostova's 'The Historian', but Rebecca Trogner's vampires need not kidnap historians as they willingly enter a secret society to protect the vampires and others' world. Characters are well-defined and intriguing, with each a specific role to fulfil. While we try to understand who would want all the keepers dead, we never forget about the fragile Lily, fed with Krieger's blood and growing day by day stronger.

The Last Keeper's Daughter' is the compelling first volume in a series. I suspect Lily is the key to the entire series, as, while we discover her hidden past and the reasons for her otherworldly qualities, there is still much more mystery to solve around her. Rebecca Trogner leaves us with a light cliffhanger full of promises.

JENNY'S REVIEW

This book isn't a typical vampire book like the ones I normally read. It's quite complicated and there are a lot of different characters which made it a bit confusing for me sometimes. Because it wasn't just about vampires, but also about werewolves, Others and even fallen angels. When you're reading this book you really need to focus otherwise you won't be able to keep up, which isn't a bad thing. I mean, don't we all love to immerse ourselves in the world we're reading about and forget everything around us?

Lily is a normal human being, although maybe not that normal, because she almost never speaks. At least not in the beginning of the book. Lily's father Walter is the Vampire King Krieger's keeper. But it isn't until Walter gets murdered, that Lily finds out what Krieger actually is. When Krieger gets to know Lily, he feels a deep connection to her, and even though Lily feels it too, she doesn't act on it. Krieger saved Lily's life and because of that, they are now bonded, which means Lily can't trust her own feelings anymore. Does she really like Krieger or is he making her feel that?

Although I can understand that Lily is confused about her feelings for Krieger, it was also frustrating that she kept changing her mind about him. I'm a sucker for a good love story, but this was a different story than what I expected. Which can be refreshing of course, when done right. It's just that, for me, too much was left unresolved between Krieger and Lily. The ending of this book obviously makes it clear that there will be a sequel, but I wasn't aware of this at first. I prefer to know beforehand if the book is a stand alone or part of a series so I can prepare myself for a cliffhanger.

Nevertheless, The Last Keeper's Daughter is a very good book. The main focus of the book is on finding out who killed Walter. Throughout the book I had no idea whatsoever who could have done it. My compliments to Trogner for that, because she keeps you hooked and makes you want to keep reading to find out if they will resolve the mystery. And even after your questions are answered, you still want more. The ending makes sure of that. I can't wait to read the second book, obviously, so I can get more information about what will happen between Krieger and Lily.

Original review here: http://offbeatvagabond.blogspot.com/2013/02/indie-book-review-and-100-amazon-gc.html

The Last Keeper's Daughter follows a woman named Lily. Her family is very rich and live in a mansion, but that doesn't mean that Lily's life has been easy. She isn't like other people. She can remember everything she has seen and heard, so she keeps contact with other people to a minimum. Her childhood was difficult since she was very sick and would have died. But there are parts of her past she can't remember and she doesn't know exactly why. She also doesn't know that her father Walter is a keeper for a vampire. Keepers are a vampire's right-hand man. They keep track of their history and do their bidding. Walter asks the vampire, Krieger, for a favor. He wants Krieger to protect Lily while he is gone. But neither Lily or Krieger are fully aware of what Walter is into and Lily will have to pay for it.

Instant favorite! That is it. This book was just plain awesome. I loved absolutely everything about this book. The characters, the story, the plot, the mystery, everything fell into place beautifully. I couldn't put this bad boy down.

Something bad happened to Lily and Krieger must save her. Krieger had no intention of protecting Lily himself, he was just going to have people watch over her, I love how quickly that changed. I actually thought Krieger was a villain when we first see him and Walter together, but that quickly changed. I love him. He is what I always imagine a vampire to be. He can be bossy and scary, but he was pretty amazing when you get down to it. I loved Lily and Krieger together. Lily was extremely shy and fragile, but I love that with Krieger, she had quite the backbone. The longer she is with him, the stronger she gets. They balanced each other out very well. The way they met actually reminded me of when Bill and Sookie first met. It made me love it even more (I don't know why, but that really is one of my favorite scenes ever, in the book and on the show). I am hoping Lily comes to her senses in the next book. There were times when she got mad at him and I just wanted to punch her. She had some immature moments. But to be fair, I think it is more because she doesn't really know who she is especially in this new world she has been thrust into.

We even have Merlin. Merlin! Well he says he is a Merlin, not THE Merlin. But I think he is lying given all the things he can do. Merlin is Krieger's advisor and he was awesome, a little cold, but awesome! I also loved Hunter. Hunter is the detective that was brought on to investigate the murder that took place at a church. Until an agent shows up and takes the case from him. He knows the case is huge, so he continues his own investigation against orders. But Hunter knows he is in the case of his life when every one he works with starts disappearing. He ends up in the vampire world. They want him to help them with the investigation. I really enjoyed Hunter, he made me laugh and had a lot of guts. I don't know if I would have had the balls to take on a room full of vampires that wouldn't hesitate to kill me. I am huge fan of the Vantors, werewolf/vampire hybrids, specifically Liam. He was Lily's main guard. I loved the friendship between them much to Krieger's dislike. But out of all these characters, I love Lucien. I want more Lucien! I get the feeling he will play a bigger part in the next book especially given the ending. At least I hope so. Goodness, I hope there will be another book.

This story was just epic. I love the amount mystery that Trogner puts in this story. This is way more than a romance. I think fans of mystery would be into this story. We slowly uncover things about Walter and the things that he has been hiding from his family. We also have the mystery of the phantom that seems to be stalking Lily. No one can sees him except Lily. With the killings taking place, this phantom is the number suspect, but no one knows who or what he is. But when we get to the end and find out exactly who has been behind the murders, you will be shocked. It really is only the beginning. We also find out what Walter has been hiding. It was beyond creepy. I definitely got shivers.

I highly recommend this story to anyone who likes a little romance and a dark fantasy. I hung on every word with this book. Trogner oozes talent and I am definitely a fan. The story will have you hooked from the first page. It is sexy, suspenseful, and full of twists and turns. An absolute must read, add this to your wishlist right now.

OMG, I don't know why, but this year is filled with fantastic book! So you see me coming with this comment: The Last Keeper's Daughter was phenomenal! Well some of you might say that I am exaggerating, but if you are fans of paranormal romance, this book is a must!

I'm a cover whore and I must admit that I almost refuse the review request for this book, because I wasn’t attracted to the cover. Then I read the blurb and I knew immediately that there was something new to discover!

I haven't been disappointed! OMG, I so loved this story, it contained almost every elements to make me drool, fantasize and the suspense surrounding the origins of Lily was almost unbearable, but ideal to keep me hooked!

Mainly, Lily is the only daughter of the last Keeper. After the death of his father, Lily learns that entrusted to his future, his protection, his life the king of vampires, Krieger. However, Lily is not aware of the supernatural world that surrounds it. Lily is a rather shy woman and erased. She does not like attention, but the fact of becoming the new king of the vampires protected attracts many curious and dangerous situations.

Krieger is the king vampire, he is rich, power and authority is incredible. Krieger seems attracted by Lily at first; he will discover that it is much more than just human.

Several aspects to the book were very interesting and creative:

The disappearance of Walter, Lily's father,
The true nature of the death of Lily's mother,
Protection and origins of Lily
Discovery of the paranormal world: Vampires, Dragons, Vantors are vampires/werewolves!
All these beautiful males alpha (they are everywhere!)

I don't know how to explain it, but I was eager and excited to learn more about Lily's past, but also her relationship with Krieger.

The reading was easy, fluid, all had a sense and I was immediately attracted to this beautiful and mysterious Lily. The author, Rebecca Trogner knows how to keep the reader in suspense and the course of the story is fast but well established. I think only one thing: Read the sequel as soon as possible! Can I??? Pretty please!?!?!? :D

Page Turner: Yes!

Series: I hope so!!!!

Stand Alone: Yes, but you will surely want to read the next book, if there's one!

Hotness: Krieger, since I'm a vampire freak, but I had to also mention Liam, a Vantor and Lucien, a Slayer!

Proserpine Recommendation: This one is a must try this year! If you love PNR, but most of all, supernatural world and creatures, you will be satisfied with this one!
BUY!!!

I am always up for a good book that crosses genres and is hard to define. This book looked like it would be a good fit for me, a Paranormal Romance that is also a Mystery. After reading this book, I am not sure that I agree with the Romance portion. It felt more Urban Fantasy/Mystery to me. There is definite paranormal aspects, and there is some romantic aspects, but there was no HEA at the end of this story. And an Happily Ever After is one of the primary criteria for me for Paranormal Romance. Let's just say that if you like books that can't be easily pigeon holed, than this is a book for you.

The story starts with a Prologue and some back story on Walter Ayers. This is important because it will be the only time that we will be able to actually interact with Walter. He is an old man, father to Lily and the keeper for the North American Vampire King Krieger. He basically makes a deal with the King for
Krieger to take care of Lily.

Chapter one puts us into Lily's head. From the beginning you aren't sure whether she has some form of autism or some similar condition. She doesn't speak and looks at the world in an odd and unique way. Lily has no idea about the Others. But when she falls and is seriously injured at a charity event held on the grounds of her family's estate, that she learns the truth and finally begins to understand that she is stronger than she knows.

This is also the story of Detective Dale Hunter. He is drawn into the world of the others while on an investigation into the brutal murder of two men. Detective Hunter is recruited by the Elder of the Others to investigate the murders and figure out what is going on. His investigation leads him from Europe to North America and crosses with the mystery that is Lily and her Otherness.

This was a good book. I am thrilled to see that the author is currently working on a sequel. The main mystery in this book was solved. Unfortunately it left me with even more questions that needed answers. There were times that I was a little confused, especially while in Lily's head. But I think those were deliberate, done to help illustrate how Lily is growing and changing. I am going to go with 3 stars on Goodreads. This series has a lot of potential and I want to see where the author takes it.

How would you feel if you ended up in a world that you didn’t even know existed? On top of that, you felt more comfortable there? Lily Ayres is going through just that. She has been practically alone all of her life. Then one day, she ends up with Krieger, the Vampire King. That is the doing of her father, Walter Ayres. He was the last in a long line of Keepers for the Vampire King. He went to Krieger and asked him to take Lily as his and protect her. He was sick and knew he was dying, but he had one more mission that the Elder had requested of him.

When he is found brutally murdered, it comes to light that it wasn’t the Elder who requested him to go to England, but someone else. Only they don’t know who. They bring in human detective, Dale Hunter, to help them figure this mystery out. With his help and others in her “new” world, Lily set out to discover who killed her father and why. Detective Hunter stays behind in America to help Lily and the others. They find out that Walter left them clues. Clues only Lilly might be able to decipher as she has been playing this game with Walter her entire life.

I have been a little burned out on paranormal books. It seems like there for a while, they were what were popular. I had hesitations when I first started this book thinking that it was going to be like the many books that I have read before. I was wrong. I really liked this book. Yes, it has vampires in it, but it isn’t your normal vampire book. I like that Lily wasn’t a strong character at the beginning of the book. It made you more sympathetic to her. The strength in Lily changes throughout the book as more things happen. I’m not sure about Detective Hunter. Not that there is anything bad about him, just he is a little quirky to me. It is interesting and humorous to read what he is thinking. Overall, this is a good read.

Enthralling Vampire mystery. Intriguing and tantalizing from the very first page! I was grabbed by this novel and couldn't put it down until I had the entire story and the mysteries figured out. The vampires are inspiring and the other creatures tickled my imagination in a way that partly made me want to hide under the covers, but mostly made me want to turn the page and devour some more.

There are so many fantastic characters in this book. It is hard to narrow it down to who are my favorites. I really enjoyed the humor from detective Hunter, but I was also enthralled by the vampire, Lucien and the Vantor, Liam. The Last Keeper's Daughter is packed full of mystery, wonderful, well developed world building, and characters that are full of depth. Stoke Castle, the vampire king's residence, is a fantastical place of beauty and grandeur. If you're looking for a great read and you like vampires, magic, and a good murder mystery, I highly recommend this book! P.S. I loved the detective's notes at the end -- highly entertaining! and I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next book in this series.

***I received this book in exchange for an honest review, Lovers of Paranomal.***

What a great new addition to the paranormal community. I really enjoyed the story and the characters, they were intriguing and it was convincing.

The beginning was a little rocky for me, I had trouble getting into it. It is definitely a book worth sticking with however because by the 20% mark, I was starting to really lean forward and get into it.

The characters are very complex, I never know exactly how they will react because sometimes they will react the way you expect and then suddenly one character reacts completely different and although you might be baffled, it always seems to work out with the story.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Krieger and Lily. I was really hoping for some romance (there was just not enough for me) but I'm willing to wait as long as it's worth it in the end.

There was a good amount of mystery that kept me guessing and also allowed the author to set up more events for future books, etc. (which I appreciated).

I'm excited to read the second book.

I received this book for free from the LoP group in exchange for an honest review.

This book was Amazing! I was glued from the very first page. I give it 8 stars. Krieger the vampire King is my type of vampire. Not only is he deadly but caring. Liam the Vantor, what can I say? How do I get one? Lol. Lucien the slayer, very cool. The fact that he's Lily's Dragon is just awesome. The fact that Ms. Trogner combined all my favorite paranormal creatures into one book is just plain awesome! She made the story click right away along with tons of mystery and suspense.

I will be starting book 2 right away. Thank you for letting me read your book:)

The Last Keeper's Daughter had everything I love about a vampire story and is told in such a beautiful way.

Trogner tells a complex, woven tale of mystery and intrigue about a world where the "others" are not readily seen by humans. Though, not a historical it still has that rich aged quality that a story about a being that's lived for generation upon generation should.

The relationship between Krieger and Lily develops at a believable pace and is driven forward by the mystery.

Highly recommended.

A unique twist on the vampire legacy. I am on the fence with this book because I liked the story line, but I could never really connect with the characters except for Lucien. I found Kreiger to be too intense and at the other end of the spectrum is Lily, who I found to be needy. It was almost stressful to read any interaction between Lily and Kreiger. It was almost manic either really high or really low. To be honest I am not sure if I like the book, but I didn't not like either.

I think it was ok! it grabbed your attention in some places. others it just left you dragging your eyes across the page trying to finish. I read the book once and I don't want to read it again. the author did a great job at grabbing your attention in the beginning. then I just felt it slip almost completely. I didn't really like it!

Not really sure how I feel about Lily's character.

On the one hand I'm happy that she doesn't remain the weak, mute, and disabled character presented from the beginning of the story( like we need anymore of those). But... I'm not really feeling Lily's almost combative relationship with Kreiger for what I think are the wrong reasons. She says that she's never been happier, healthier and more cared for in her entire life but she keeps on throwing it in his face he saved her life, asking how to kill vampires, demanding he tells her everything and not even forcing her when he clearly could and wants to. It's like she demands to be respected and cared for when she did nothing to earn it besides having an attractive scent. He didn't have to keep her there and she is damned lucky that Kreiger is so in love with her because her whole attitude stinks.

Okay gonna play a little devil's advocate against my own comments though. Why should she feel grateful to someone like Kreiger who essentially took her over? I'm thinking of every barbarian romance where the guy takes the woman and she either has to magically fall in love with this alpha "hero" or fight her "love" the entire time. When I read those stories I'm clearly behind the heroine. ( even through he has said that she could leave)

I think I just don't like her at all. Every one of them is bending over backward to protect her and all she keeps on demanding is to be treated as an adult and tell her secrets when she didn't even know her own mother's corpse laid in her own house. Here's a thought for this new and independent Lily why don't you figure it all out and stop depending on near strangers to figure out your own problem? For instance finding out what you are and how and who killed your "father"?

I actually loved it when Kreiger put her in her place because she was just too whinny for the wrong reasons. Like her father for example. I'm not saying that she should love him or anything but really he's the one that raised a child that wasn't his own and tried the best of his abilities to protect you when he couldn't.

I'm sensing a major betrayal of Kreiger will be coming up and Lily will feel entirely justified .

Just not liking how inconsistent and weak she is I guess lol...

This author has a way with words and it sucks you right in.
The story is intriguing and has its unique view on the supernatural world i found quite engaging.
But I couldn't give it more than 3 stars, although i really liked it, but at times the story was not fluid enough. The chapters felt like separate blocks and that interrupted the story for me. I admit it was a nice tool to keep up the suspense at times, but i found myself more often disconnected, like i must have missed something. I wanted to read more and deeper, to explore what they were feeling and experiencing. But it was constantly snatched away from me.
I loved how intricately the world of myths and legends were woven into this story. How well known personalities, like Merlin and their stories were given a unique new role and a new breath of life in this interesting world. As well as all the other awesome Others who joined the court. The plot is very intriguing and not one bit one-dimensional.

I am looking forward to reading the next books in this series.

The first half was intriguing and the second half was...not. I did not enjoy it. Way too many characters and terms to keep track of. Way too many things going on. A lot of sub plots, I am not sure the main plot has a chance. I mean, that is if it is the main plot given how confusing as hell it is. I mostly skimmed the last half to be honest.

The characters are not developed. I did not connect to them at all. You don't get to know them at all. I don't hate them or love them. I feel nothing. Hunter seemed to be on the right track to being developed but the rest of the story was so boring and confusing that I can't pay him any mind.

Not a romance

I found this listed under romance and from the blurb I assumed it was. I was wrong. The heroine was very childlike and not likable.
