This was my first book by this author, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction.

It was a fun, fast-paced mix of romance and light suspense that kept me turning the pages. The elevator meet cute instantly pulled me in, and I loved how the story blended chemistry, mystery, and just enough drama to keep things interesting.

Brooke and Stuart were easy to like, and I really enjoyed their dynamic. Stuart’s protective, charming personality balanced Brooke’s driven and practical nature so well, and their banter made their connection feel genuine. Their romance was sweet, effortless, and made this such an easy book to get wrapped up in.

The mystery added a fun layer without overshadowing the romance, making this a really entertaining and easy read. Everything came together into a satisfying story that was equal parts swoon-worthy, exciting, and enjoyable.

For a quick read, this packed in so much heart, chemistry, and fun that I never wanted it to end.

Huge thank you to J.D. Carothers and The Author Agency for the ARC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨

I loved being back in this “world” again! The Love Over Murder series was my introduction to JD Carothers, and I knew after listening to the first book that I was going to enjoy her writing, and I have! This story is a prequel to that series and while I will never understand why authors write stories of before after writing a series, I still enjoyed the story of Brooke & Stuart! I’m looking forward to having the story in my ears as soon as it’s available!

Brooke & Stuarts story was a quick one in the sense that it was fast-paced and really captured my attention, so the time flew by like nothing! It’s not overly long so it can be read in an afternoon but it’s not lacking in development or progression. The storyline flowed easily blending the romance journey with a little suspense just to keep things interesting! LOL Brooke & Stuart were very easy to like as individuals and as a couple and I couldn’t help but root for them. Their relationship journey flowed very organically making it easy to be relatable and realistic. I felt their connection at all times, and I loved how they balanced each other out.

My favorite aspect of this story is that the romance took center stage, and the mystery/suspense did not overshadow it in any way. As I mentioned, this is a shorter story and I’m glad that the author made the choice of always shining a light on the romance. Even though this was a quick(ish) read, it had all the essential ingredients for a story full of heart and I absolutely loved it!

This is the prequel to a new series, and this is Brooke and Stuart’s story.
Brooke is rule following, and career focused, while Stuart is living for fun, fighting expectations, and avoiding the future. A power blackout has Brooke and Stuart trapped in an elevator together.
This is a well written fast paced story, with forced proximity, tad suspense, work related romance, opposites attract, forbidden love, and undeniable chemistry, which leads to an entertaining, royal romance.
I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Masked Secrets is the prequel to the Love Over Murder series and introduces Stuart, Viscount Sandridge, and attorney Brooke Bennett, while giving readers the chance to catch up with some familiar characters. Their first meeting is certainly memorable. Trapped together in a lift, Stuart offers Brooke a swig from his hip flask to help calm her claustrophobia, only for her to end up more than a little drunk. When she disappears the next morning without so much as a goodbye, he assumes he’ll never see her again - until their paths cross once more when she unexpectedly walks into a boardroom as his legal advisor.

I really enjoyed the balance between the romance and the mystery in this book. The suspense starts with a couple of thefts before gradually escalating into something much more serious involving murder and kidnapping, and I liked how the plot gathered momentum without ever feeling overcomplicated or overshadowing the romance. And even though the story takes place over a relatively short period, it never felt rushed at any point. I also appreciated that Stuart and Brooke actually took the time to get to know one another, becoming friends rather than diving straight into a relationship. Their romance developed naturally, although I have to admit the chemistry between them perhaps felt a little lacking and lukewarm at times.

Stuart wasn’t my favourite hero in the beginning. His initial attitude towards Brooke was frustrating, especially as he seemed perfectly happy to pursue a fling with her while still expecting to marry a more suitable woman, one his parents would approve of, even after he started to fall in love with her. It made him come across as being elitist, and it’s no surprise that this attitude eventually causes problems between them when a careless comment to a reporter leaves Brooke hurt and puts her in danger. Brooke, meanwhile, felt much more mature and relatable, going through her own personal crisis as she struggled with the realisation that somewhere along the way she’d traded her love of adventure and reputation as a risk-taker for a safe but unfulfilling career as by-the-book attorney.

Overall, Masked Secrets is an enjoyable mix of romance and suspense. If you’re looking for romantic suspense with more of a cosy mystery feel than edge-of-your-seat thrills, this is definitely an author worth checking out.

Masked Secrets by J.D. Carothers is a fantastic, fast-paced romance that serves as the perfect prequel to the Love Over Murder series. Short, hot, and packed with chemistry, this story brilliantly wraps a swoon-worthy romance and a light touch of mystery into one addictive package. It is a recipe for absolute fireworks, blending a billionaire trying to avoid his future with an alluring, career-focused woman, a masquerade ball, and an underlying element of suspense that keeps readers guessing who the villain is and what they are after.

The story kicks off with Brooke, a rule-following professional who has left her adventurous college days behind. When a sudden power outage leaves her trapped and panicking in a dark elevator, a sexy stranger comes to her rescue. Armed with a deep British accent, a warm shoulder to lean on, and a flask of expensive whiskey, he is exactly what she needs to calm her nerves. Believing she will never see him again after their intense, steamy encounter, Brooke tries to put the embarrassment aside—only to be stunned when their paths unexpectedly cross again in the professional world.

That stranger is Stuart, a billionaire living for fun and fighting family expectations. From the moment he lays eyes on Brooke's auburn hair, emerald eyes, and perfect curves, he is utterly mesmerized. His protective instincts instantly kick in during the blackout, but the sparks that fly between them leave him wanting much more. Though he deeply regrets not getting her number, he is thrilled when she unexpectedly turns up in his life again, even as Brooke tries to push him away to keep things professional.

J.D. Carothers does a wonderful job of balancing the instant, undeniable attraction between Brooke and Stuart with a growing sense of danger. Watching the couple navigate their intense connection while dealing with an looming threat makes for a highly entertaining read. For lovers of contemporary romance who enjoy a side of intrigue and a guaranteed happily ever after, this quick and sultry standalone prequel is a must-read that will leave you eager for the rest of the series.

💚 Behind the Masks, They Found Something Real 💚
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌶️🌶️

My first introduction to J.D. Carothers couldn't have been a better one.

For a novella, Masked Secrets packs an impressive amount of romance, chemistry, humor, and light suspense into a fast-paced story that kept me turning the pages from beginning to end. I finished it wishing it had been even longer because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Brooke and Stuart.

The elevator meet-cute instantly hooked me. Being trapped together during a blackout isn't exactly how either of them expected to spend their evening, but it created the perfect opportunity for two strangers to connect. Stuart's calm reassurance, unmistakable British charm, and protective nature immediately made him impossible not to like, while Brooke's practical, career-focused personality balanced him perfectly. Their banter felt effortless, and I loved watching their relationship grow from an unexpected encounter into something much deeper.

One thing I especially appreciated was that their romance wasn't rushed. Even with the shorter page count, Brooke and Stuart actually took the time to get to know one another. Their friendship developed naturally, making their relationship feel genuine and believable. For a novella, that's no small accomplishment.

The light mystery running alongside the romance added just the right amount of intrigue without ever taking away from the relationship. It kept the story moving while allowing the romance to remain front and center. I also enjoyed how the suspense gradually built rather than overwhelming the story, making this an easy and entertaining read from beginning to end.

If you're looking for a quick romantic suspense with memorable characters, great chemistry, a swoony British billionaire, and just enough mystery to keep you guessing, Masked Secrets is the perfect place to start. I'm already looking forward to diving into the rest of the Love Over Murder series.

Thank you so much to J.D. Carothers and The Author Agency for the gifted ARC. This was a wonderful introduction to your writing, and I can't wait to see where this series goes next.

Stuart is used to women only being attracted to him because of his money and title, so when he’s trapped in an elevator with a woman during a brownout, he helps her through her panic attack, and they spend the rest of the time talking, and sharing a flask of whiskey. When she falls asleep before the power comes back on, he doesn’t know where to take her, so he brings her back to his suite, staying on the couch to make sure she’s ok. When she wakes up, her embarassment forces her to run out of the suite before he can ask for her number, and he spends the rest of the weekend thinking about her, only to have her walk into a meeting Monday morning.

Brooke has been a strict rule follower for years, hoping to make partner at her LA law firm. She’s not the type of person who gets drunk in an elevator with a stranger, but desperate times. Mortified by her behaviour, she ran out the following morning, relieved that she wouldn’t have to face him again, only to realize Monday morning that he is not only a client, but a noble as well. While she’s determined to keep her distance, he makes it clear he wants more, and refuses to let Brooke out of his sight.

I received an early copy of this book from The Author Agency and really enjoyed it. The chemistry and banter between Stuart and Brooke was great, and I loved watching their connection grow. While Stuart has shied away from relationships because of the future his family has already dictated for him, Brooke has spent all her time and energy on her career, not wanting to take the time away from work to entertain romance. I loved the suspense element the author added to this story, with both Brooke and Stuart caught in the crosshairs of a bigger mystery, and although this book had a lower page count, it didn’t feel like anything was missing from the story.

The only reason I picked up this book was because I saw “elevator stuck together” in the tropes. Apparently getting trapped in an elevator with a hot British viscount sounded like a solid life plan to me 😂💕
Okay so this book follows Brooke, a lawyer, and Stuart, a British viscount, who meet when they get stuck in an elevator during a power outage. What starts as an unexpected encounter quickly turns into something more while a series of thefts and a murder pull them into a dangerous mystery.
This book was a fun mix of romance and suspense. I really enjoyed the elevator scene because it was cute, funny, and gave the characters an instant connection. Stuart was sweet, protective, and completely gone for Brooke from the start, which made me smile so much.
The mystery kept me interested and I liked trying to figure out who was behind everything. The romance was definitely the stronger part of the story for me, but the suspense added enough drama to keep things exciting. Brooke and Stuart had good chemistry and I loved how supportive Stuart was throughout the book.
Some parts felt a little quick and I wanted a bit more depth in certain moments, but overall it was an enjoyable read with romance, danger, and a satisfying ending.
If you love romantic suspense with a protective hero, a little mystery, and a British MMC who falls hard, this one is worth checking out.

Masked Secrets was such a fun surprise! J.D. Carothers pulled me in from the very first chapter, and I had a hard time putting it down. It had everything I enjoy in a quick romance with just the right amount of suspense to keep the pages turning.

Brooke and Stuart had instant chemistry, and their first meeting in the elevator was unforgettable. I loved how their relationship developed from that chance encounter into something much deeper. Stuart completely stole my heart with his protective nature, charm, and that irresistible British accent. Brooke was a wonderful heroine who was easy to connect with. She was intelligent, driven, and relatable as she tried to balance her career with opening her heart again.

Even though this is a shorter story, it never felt lacking. The romance was swoony, the chemistry was undeniable, and the light suspense added just enough mystery without taking away from the love story. I found myself smiling through so many moments while also wondering what was going to happen next.

If you're looking for a fast-paced romance with lovable characters, plenty of sparks, a touch of danger, and a guaranteed happily ever after, I highly recommend picking up Masked Secrets. This was a fantastic introduction to the Love Over Murder series, and I can't wait to read more from J.D. Carothers.

The Love Over Murder Series is what made me fall in love with J.D. Carother's writing so when I saw she was writing a prequel I was so excited to get back to his series! Of course she took me back to the series that started it all for me and made me love every minute I read this book. This book will have you smiling, swooning, laughing, will take you on a little mystery, have your heart melting and will leave you with a wonderful ending!

I love how Stuart & Brooke meet! Stuart may be royal but this man is so down to earth and so sweet! Brooke & Stuart will help each other get out of their own way and see life in a different light.

I loved reading this book and didn't want to put it down. This book had the perfect flow and will take you on such a fun ride. If you love royal romance, forced proximity, suspense, and forbidden romance then this is the perfect book for you! I HIGHLY recommend this book and this entire series! I did listen to the other books in this series and I would recommend the audiobooks because the narrators told the story so well and I loved listening to them.

Thank you J.D. Carothers & The Author Agency for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed the romantic murder mystery story.
Stuart is a fun loving British billionaire Lord, she’s an intelligent hard working lawyer. Their meet-cute is in an elevator in a brownout, she’s having a panic attack he talks her down, while they wait he give her some whiskey from his father’s stock. Unfortunately Brooke is a lightweight and soon falls asleep. He takes her back to his room but is a true gentleman.
At his meeting the following day he finds himself across the table from Brooke as his lawyer tasked to stay with him for the week.
As they work their way through the week of events and meeting Brooke’s Co-workers who he doesn’t trust, they get closer and closer.
At a gala dinner Brooke looses her pearl necklace her aunt gave her. The auction at this event raised millions for the Foundation.
When a board member is robbed of his Rolex and succumbs to his injuries.
At the masked ball Brooke hears something she shouldn’t and gets caught. Knocked out but luckily Stuart sees her being carried away and saves her. When she recovers in hospital she tells Stuart the details and he sets a net to catch not only the thieves but the killer.
The sting in the boardroom has everything neatly wrapped up. And he gets the girl and the black pearl necklace.
A good mystery romance

“Masked Secrets” by J.D. Carothers
📘 Format: Digital Book
📚 Pub Date: 06.25.26
⭐️ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars

“Masked Secrets” by J.D. Carothers is a forced proximity, slow burn romance with a mystery twist.

Stuart is a Billionaire who comes from a Noble family. As the Lord Sandridge, Viscount of Sandridge, the oldest son of the Earl of Sandridge there are a great many expectations for his entire life.

Brooke is a junior associate lawyer working hard on her career track to eventually become Senior Partner. During the course of her work obligations, she ends up trapped in an elevator with Stuart, who she doesn’t know anything about. Sparks fly, and they make an impression on each other, but don’t exchange their contact information.

Later on Brooke is given the assignment to shadow a Charitable Foundation Client’s representative, who happens to be Lord Sandridge (Stuart).

During the course of the assignment, some suspicious activities provide some mystery and suspense. I usually pride myself on solving the mystery before it is revealed, but in this case I was fooled!

I received Masked Secrets in return for an honest review from Over The River PR.

Brooke ends up locked in a powerless elevator and if not for Stuart she would have been in full on panic mode. Thankfully while they are stuck he is able to calm her but by the time he has the chance to get her number she's gone. He's hoping to find her but fate takes a hand and sends her right into his meeting the next morning and she's assigned to work with him for the time he's in town.

I loved Brooke she's a sweetheart who's just trying to make it in the the vicious corporate law world. Stuart is swoonworthy in every way you can't help falling for him. They have this sweet whirlwind romance that is a perfect balance of romance and spice. We are introduced to a cast of characters for future books as this is a interconnected standalone series.

I devoured this one in a just a few short hours and was hooked right from the first page till the last. The characters are easy to connect with you can't help falling in love with their story. This is my first book by the author and I'm obsessed with her storytelling. I enjoyed this one so much and can't wait to continue the series it's a perfect start to an exciting new romance series. Highly recommend if you enjoy a fast paced romance.

Thank you to The Author Agency and J.D. Carothers for the opportunity to read and review this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Masked Secrets was a fun way to kick off the Love Over Murder series.

As the prequel, it does exactly what I wanted it to do—it introduces the world, the characters, and leaves me excited to continue with the first full-length book.

We meet Stuart, Viscount Sandridge, and Brooke after an unexpected encounter leaves a lasting impression on both of them. Their chemistry was immediate, and I enjoyed watching their relationship begin to unfold.

I also liked that this story blended romance with a touch of suspense. The mystery element kept things interesting without taking away from the romance, making it an enjoyable and quick read.

If you’re planning on reading this series, I’d definitely recommend starting with this prequel. It gives a great introduction to the characters while making you curious about everything that’s still to come.

I’m looking forward to seeing where the series goes next.

Well, I had fun with this one! The beginning was so cute and hilarious, I loved the way it went. I feel like this book was a good mix of romcom and romantic suspense. It felt like it didn’t get too deep, but it kept you engaged. I cannot wait to see what else this series will have in store.

Brooke is dedicated to the job she went to school for. That means putting the partying aside and getting serious. That is, until she meets in stranger in an elevator and they get stuck together. While panic takes over, she quickly gets tipsy off the stranger’s whiskey and wakes up with a lot of regrets.

Stuart is covering for his ill father, rather than traveling around the world with his friends. He is ready to do the job he was sent here to do, no funny business until a woman joins him in an elevator. He is instantly struck by how different she is than anyone else.

An accent, a flask of whiskey, and a dark elevator? Say less. 🥵✈️

Masked Secrets by J.D. Carothers kicks off with Brooke getting trapped in a dark elevator during a power outage. Enter Stuart: a sexy, accent-wielding British billionaire who rescues her with a warm shoulder and a flask of expensive whiskey. I mean, where do I sign up for that kind of rescue? 😮‍💨

What I honestly loved most about this book is the dynamic between them. Brooke is a relatable, career-focused professional trying to play by the rules, while Stuart is living for fun and dodging his family's massive expectations. When they cross paths again unexpectedly after their steamy encounter, the push-and-pull chemistry is absolutely electric. Plus, throwing a masquerade ball and a literal villain into the mix? It’s a total recipe for fireworks. 🎆

It’s fast-paced, super engaging, and the banter kept me turning the pages late into the night. It's the perfect spicy, billionaire escape read!

Masked Secrets by J.D. Carothers was such a fun, swoony read!
A billionaire prince trying to avoid his future, a career-focused woman determined to follow the rules, a masquerade ball, forbidden attraction, and an elevator meet-cute? Sign me up! 😍
Brooke and Stuart had instant chemistry, but what I loved most was watching their connection grow despite all the reasons they shouldn't be together. Different worlds, different continents, and expectations pulling them in opposite directions made their journey both sweet and emotional.
Stuart was charming, protective, and impossible not to fall for, while Brooke's strength and determination made her the perfect match for him. Add a touch of suspense, plenty of swoon-worthy moments, and a royal romance, and I was hooked from beginning to end.
💕 Forbidden love, forced proximity, a British accent, and a prince who falls hard? This one was an easy 4.5 star read for me! 📚✨👑💕

Masked Secrets by J.D. Carothers is an engaging and captivating prequel that delivers a romance full of mystery and suspense that perfectly sets the stage for the Love Over Murder series. In this novella, we are introduced to the FMC Brooke, alluring, intelligent, career-focused woman and the MMC Stuart, a billionaire that is facing expectations about his future. One of the things I loved about this novella is how Carothers did an excellent job of developing her characters in a relatively short amount of time. The chemistry between the main characters is immediate yet believable, and their emotional connection adds depth to the story. Overall, Masked Secrets is a fast-paced, entertaining novella filled with chemistry, intrigue, and anticipation for what's to come.

Masked Secrets by J.D Carothers is a really fun, sexy adventure. This prequel introduces us to Stuart (a playful billionaire escaping family pressures) and Brooke (a highly driven, intelligent career woman). Throw them together in a stuck elevator during a power outage, and sparks fly immediately. I loved the mix of Stuart’s sweet, comforting side during Brooke's panic attack and the forbidden nature of their connection.

What I wanted more of was the suspense and the villain subplot; everything felt a little rushed, leaving me wanting more—especially of Stuart and Brooke, whose chemistry was unmistakable.

But I must say, as a teaser for the series, it definitely captures your attention. If the upcoming stories feature Stuart's two friends, who are briefly introduced, it's going to be truly enjoyable.

My thanks to TAA for the opportunity to read an early copy of Masked Secrets. All thoughts expressed are my own. 😊

First, thank you to the Author Agency and the Author for an early copy of this book. I am writing this review freely.

I’ve loved every single book so far in the Love Over Murder Series and this book was no different.

I loved the instant attraction between Stu and Brooke, and the way he immediately took over helping calm down her panic in the elevator. As someone he who is extremely claustrophobic, I don’t know how I would have handled myself in that situation, but I can say probably not how Brooke did (IKYKYK lol)

Stu immediately took on the roll of protector, but Brooke still held her own as the strong-willed lawyer she always was and will be.

Their love story, the whirlwind it was, was magical. I loved getting to see their silly sides, and see the beloved characters we know from the series in a different way

Thank you to Literary Media Tours & the Authors for my ARC of Masked Secrets. This review is my own!

I love billionaire romance so much. Add a murder twist? ABSOLUTELY. This book is the prequel to the Love over Murder series. It follows Stuart, a viscount, and Brooke, an attorney. Brooke is the attorney following Stuart as he oversees events in place of his father. They have a meet cute, and after that, undeniable chemistry. Will they be able to overcome all of the boundaries put in their way?

I love that this book is short, and everything you need in a billionaire romance. It gets to the point rather quickly, and the story flows well. I love a majority of the tropes in this book & genuinely wanted to see the rest of their story after the book ended. I feel like Stuart and Brooke have a fun connection that I need to see grow!

I’m not a fan of insta-love and it’s the one thing about the book I just didn’t love. It’s my personal opinion, but I think at the same time it was done well.

We have AI convos in this book that I think are important to look at as well. I love that she brought the idea up and was able to explain reasons why AI can be harmful. I also love the cause that Stuart’s father is promoting in the book. For a small book it packed heavy messages that I think are super important for us today.

Again, I loved this book. I think if you’re looking for a quick billionaire romance this is the perfect choice!

I have heard so many great things about the Love Over Murder series and having now read the prequel, I will be reading the rest of this series. Brooke and Stuart, from the moment they meet, there is an instant connection and the chemistry between them is undeniable.

Stuart, a British Viscount, is captivated by Brooke when they get trapped in an elevator together. He is protective, sweet and so down to earth.

Brooke has been career driven, never taking the time for dating. When she finds out the man from the elevator is her new client, she tries to keep things professional but finds herself drawn to Stuart more and more as their connection grows.

The added touch of suspense was nice, the way these two worked together was perfect.

ARC Review
This was such an easy read. Two individuals exploring a connection with a bit of mystery and thriller. Angst was minimal. The characters are big overthinkers, though 😂.

I liked Brooke a lot; she was determined and ambitious. And worked hard towards her goals, unlike some people I know who spend most of their time being jealous frauds, iykyk. I am glad she stood up for herself and didn't settle for less. The interns were sweet to her.

With Stuart, he was so caring and supportive, even when he was a bit oblivious sometimes. Good that he has his friends to talk some sense into him. He knew what he wanted and went for it.

All in all, they were cute and sweet, will recommend for someone who is looking for a short, sweet read!

I really wanted to like this book, but unfortunately, it was not for me. I was not a fan of the writing style. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there was something I wasn’t vibing with. Also, the characters were a bit confusing. Stuart didn’t want a long term relationship because he’s expected to marry someone else, but he kept wanting to go out on dates with Brooke and take care of her. It didn’t really make sense. Also, he was kind of out of touch because what do you mean you don’t understand why Brooke can’t be seen in intimate relationships with the son of the client as a female attorney??

Thank you Literary Media Tours and JD Carothers for the opportunity to read this ARC. All opinions are honest, and I am leaving a review voluntarily.

Stuart and Brooke meet in an elevator during a power outage. They open up to each other and learn that she is a lawyer and he is a British viscount. The more they talk the more connection they develop. These two get entangled with the mystery surrounding a murder. This is a very quick and easy read that is funny, full of banter, twists, and spice. Stuart is very protective of Brooke and wants to give her the best in all things.

A fantastic prequel with just enough suspense to keep you glued to the pages. It's a page turner from start to finish. And the narrative is written well. One thing that I liked was the plot twists thrown in with a bit of a murder mystery. I think the author did a great job at writing in this component into the overall storyline. I also liked the characters Brooke and Stuart. They're wonderful characters who worked very well together. Plus the slow burn between them was perfection. Overall, this was an entertaining and satisfying read. Thanks to the author agency and the author for a copy of this. All opinions are my own and freely expressed.

I flew through this one.

A city-wide blackout traps Brooke in an elevator with a handsome stranger, and what starts as one unforgettable night quickly turns into something much bigger.

I loved Brooke and Stuart together. Their chemistry was immediate, but I appreciated that the relationship didn't rely on chemistry alone. The mystery unfolding around them kept me guessing while the romance stayed front and center.

This was a quick, fun read that left me excited to start the rest of the Love Over Murder series.
