Still No Word

Rate this book
Shannon Webb-Campbell’s Still No Word seeks the appearance of the self in others and the recognition of others within the self. Patient, searching, questioning, and at times heartbreaking—these poems reveal the deep past within the present tense and the interrelations that make our lives somehow both whole and unfinished. And though Webb-Campbell is political at times, this is not politics for the sake of politics: here, it’s a matter of the human heart. Ranging from reflective to angry, from sensual to humourous, her poetry inhabits that mercurial space between the public and the private, making Still No Word a remarkably accomplished debut collection.

I read this on a warm summer with a glass of red wine, and it was perfect.

"Can you hear the distress call of my affection?

it's a bloated foghorn, a muted trumpet,
a whale's cry, a seabird stranded mid-migration

put your hand on my chest,
listen to its squall, feel the heat of my salt-stained skin

the ocean reminds us, we're alive,
we're above air, and below water

we retreated into each other
until the lighthouse cracked

our closed minds open,
our silent hearts roar"

I can appreciate the quality of the poetry but in general I believe I lacked the prior knowledge and/or experiences (especially with the geography that plays so prominently) to be able to actually enjoy the poetry.
