This book felt like cozy autumn chaos wrapped in magic, mystery, sarcasm, and found family energy.
One of my favorite things about this story was how REAL the characters felt. These aren’t teenagers magically saving the world with unlimited confidence and no responsibilities — they’re adults carrying burnout, baggage, humor, confusion, and suddenly finding themselves thrown into something far bigger than they were prepared for.
The banter absolutely carried this story for me. Funny, chaotic, emotionally messy in the best way, while still keeping this constant layer of mystery underneath everything.
And honestly? It somehow managed to feel cozy and dangerous at the same time.
Huge thank you to @BattyMoon for allowing me to be part of the ARC/street team process and trusting readers with this world early 🖤🍂✨
Definitely recommend this for readers who love: ✨ Urban fantasy 🍂 Found family 🌙 Cozy magical vibes 🔥 Dry sarcastic humor 📚 Mystery & adventure
Coming-of-age stories aren’t supposed to belong to adults - but The: Autumn proves they absolutely can! The first 100 pages of The prove that finding yourself - and perhaps a bit of magic is a lifelong journey. We’re introduced to three adults who couldn't be more different, each thrust into a world that challenges everything they thought they knew about their identities. It’s a refreshing take that reminds us that growth doesn't stop just because you've hit adulthood.
From the very start, it’s clear that the introduction of magic is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a delicious sense of unease and mystery permeating every chapter; nothing is as it seems, and the 'new’ world feels like a puzzle we’ve only found the corner pieces for. The reader is right there with the characters, trying to peel back the layers of what’s actually happening behind the scenes.
The story brilliantly balances the personal journey of self-development with a looming sense of external danger. It’s not just about these three adults finding their place in a new world; it’s about them surviving the challenges that even the locals don't fully comprehend. The iceberg I mentioned earlier is definitely starting to show more of its jagged edges.
There is a fantastic 'something is wrong' vibe building as the new visitors’ arrival seems to sync up with strange occurrences in the world. The fact that those who should know better are just as confused as the protagonists adds a layer of vulnerability to the story. You aren't just waiting for the characters to learn magic; you’re waiting for them to figure out if they’ve walked into a sanctuary or a trap.
What truly kept me glued to the pages was the narrative structure. While it's written in the third person, the focus shifts to follow each character individually, giving every one of them that 'First Banana' energy. It reminded me so much of A Song of Ice and Fire, where the lens moves from one person to the next, revealing their unique motivations and emotions. Instead of a single lead and a cast of sidekicks, we get a rich tapestry where nobody is just a bystander. You become deeply invested in one character’s experience, only to have the focus shift and realise how their actions are rippling through the world in ways they - and we - don't yet understand.
The humour in this book is brilliant. It’s a very specific kind of sly wit - the sort that doesn't hit you over the head but rewards you for paying close attention. There are these brilliant little moments of dry observation and clever banter that add such an intelligent, grounded layer to the magical narrative. It acknowledges that these are adults who grew up with the same books and movies we did, which makes the meta humour land perfectly.
As we move into the final third of the story, the deep end theory is well and truly put into action. The narrative shifts from contemplation to genuine adventure, and it turns out that jumping in is the fastest way to learn. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch the characters stop questioning the how and start relying on their instincts. This shift into high-stakes action allows them to become more settled in their abilities, proving that sometimes you don't need a textbook; you just need a reason to fight.
One of the most intriguing threads woven throughout the narrative is the mention of the 'Afon.' It’s a term that carries an immense amount of weight, yet remains shrouded in mystery for much of the book. When our three human-borne protagonists are unexpectedly invited to attend a major event, it feels like a pivotal shift in the story. It suggests that they - and the reader - are finally about to see beyond the confines of their guest home. This invitation acts as a doorway into the larger world, promising to reveal the complex history and high-stakes 'behind the scenes' mechanics that have only been hinted at so far.
The final pages of The: Autumn are a beautiful, lingering mystery that brings the characters to a full circle. Rather than tying everything up in a neat bow, the ending leaves the reader with a whirlwind of questions that demand a sequel. From the identity of the mysterious archer to the true purpose behind River’s arduous journey.
Most importantly, it reinforces the idea that self-discovery is an ongoing experience. While some might consider these characters late to their magical awakening compared to traditional fantasy tropes, the story proves that growth isn't a single moment of realisation, but a continuous spark that will keep evolving. As the first part of the story closes, it's clear that the mystery of The is only just beginning, and I am already desperate to find out why these three specific humans were chosen for this path.
What really stands out is how cleverly the plot is structured. On the surface, it reads like a magical coming-of-age (even for adults), but underneath it’s carrying a much bigger, carefully layered mystery that slowly starts to reveal itself without ever feeling rushed. There’s a real sense that everything is connected, even when you can’t quite see how yet.
It also works beautifully as a self-contained adventure while still hinting at a wider world beyond the pages, which makes the whole experience feel both satisfying and slightly dangerous in the best way — - like you’ve only just stepped through the first door of something much bigger.
Overall, it’s the kind of book that makes you want to immediately reread it, not because you’re confused, but because you know you’ve only caught half of what’s going on the first time through. I already can’t wait for the second in the series!
~the~: Autumn - S1 E1 by Baty Moon has carved a new genre like molten lava reforging a landscape. Slowly re-shaping it, often making it easier traverse and certainly wondrous to see. This is a book that leaves you with a warm glow, a new book BF (oho River) a valkyrie of a book gf in Neen and the desire to populate your garden with feral stone gnomes (not a euphamism...)
Imagine if you are in your 30s and get transported to a magical place where a werewolf and a sorceres advise that this is now your reality and oop, you are a little bit gifted, albeit human-born and saddle up because the first thing you are going to do is go on a rescue mission that you are less than ready for. Tyler, Neen and Maari are about to find out this is their reality and things are about to get lively
This book took me on a journey to rediscover what it is to marvel at magic as an adult, to lose yourself on a world quite unlike the one you inhabit on the daily and one where you actually enjoy talking to those around you because the bants are top tier! That is a teeny tiny part of what you will find in this incredible book - (I have not watched Supernatural but if it is even one iota, one atom as good as this book, I will actually defy my preferences and turn on the tv to watch it on catchup - neither have I read Harry Potter, but I get it now, I get the pleasure of it)`Just two examples, but there are many, more and yet none would come close to being adequate to describe this very, very original story
Cosy, hilarious, adventurous and an absolute blast. The character development is on point and as for the world building and magic system? Orginal and dynamic
A book that is destined to become a firm favourite and I am veery excited to see where this series goes in the future
Thank you to the author for this incredible arc. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
AUTUMN Book 1 is an amazingly imaginative urban fantasy that blends supernatural mystery, hidden-world discovery and coming-of-age character arcs into an engaging first instalment. The story’s greatest strength, in my opinion, lies in its gradual unfolding of layers in the magical society, where ordinary life gives way to secret passages and awakening of inner power. Neen’s emotional journey from skepticism and fear to acceptance and belonging (making me scream through the book ) gives a relatable feel to it. Loved Tyler and Maari! Their energy, curiosity, and warmth is top notch. Rather than relying heavily on romance or even nonstop action tbh, the book focused on friendship, identity crisis and the thrill of entering into an unfamiliar reality. At times, the pacing leans more toward world-building than plot momentum, but that also gave it some room for the hidden universe aspect so won't complain. Overall, ARC of this book felt like a promising origin story! The series is full of potential! Can't wait for what comes next!
Nothing says “welcome to the supernatural world” like being wildly unqualified and still expected to help, except maybe doing it as an adult with bills, burnout, and zero time for magical nonsense. These characters are messy, sarcastic, painfully relatable, and fully held together by chaotic, ruthless banter that absolutely carries - and they're not teenagers for a change! Which I deeply appreciate. This is urban fantasy where adulthood actually exists: responsibilities, problems… and now also magic problems. The humor is dry, the chaos is constant, and everyone is just barely functioning in the best possible way. Finally, a supernatural story that makes nonsense feel aggressively relatable.
Oh my gosh, this book? High on my list of overall favorite books!
I was so lucky to be on the amazing ARC Team. This book feels like not reading at all. It captures you from the very first page and you can't put it down.
Main characters are very relatable. You feel for them, you live their story with them. And you'll fall in love with them.
Unique magic system, mystery, supernatural creatures, hidden worlds and much more is what you'll find in this book.
I was lucky enough to read this book in advance, and I definitely recommend it. I had a great time reading it! Felt like watching a TV series unfold. I admit that I’m not used to reading 3rd person omniscient POV, which confused me a little in the beginning, but soon humor, suspense, and mystery pulled me in and i flew through the pages. I’m very excited to see what will follow after this opening installment.
I absolutely adore this book. It’s soft, supernatural, and quietly magical, with richly layered character development. The multiple points of view add depth, offering real insight into each character’s perspective and motivations. The opening immediately pulled me in a mysterious awakening in an unknown place, full of unanswered questions. Welcome to The. This dramedy will keep you entertained from beginning to end, with a finale that leaves you craving more.
This was a cheer unique story. And I loved that this was written about an older generation finding what comes next when they’re thrust into a new world. Each having a magic that is unknown to them. They sirens time figuring things out. A wonderful banter between each of them. I enjoyed the world building, it was written so well. I loved that it felt like I was right there beside them trying to figure things out with them. A really fun and cozy story.
This book was not what I expected. I love that the characters are older. The magic system seems to be like other stories but still have its own quirkiness. I’m very interested to see how the characters develop and where this story goes. I want to say more but don’t want to accidentally give any spoilers.
A cozy, autumn Urban fantasy with actual adults instead of teenagers, but they are forced to examine who they really are in a strange place... magic and emotions are everywhere in this unique read. First in the series, I'm ready to dive into the next to find out what happens!!
This is one of those rare books that captures you from the very first page. I was immediately transported into the world alongside the characters, and the entire story unfolded like a movie in my mind: vivid, immersive, and utterly captivating. ✨Before I continue the review I would like it to be known that River is officially mine!!✨Now back to the review
One of the most refreshing aspects is the cast of characters in their 30s and beyond. Each character feels authentic and relatable, whether it's the one who questions everything or the one who simply goes with the flow. Their diversity in personality and approach to life makes them feel like real people you might know. I feel like Hannah reminds me of myself(calm, gives great advice, magical and definitely has that mysterious vibe)
The discovery of magic is just the beginning. There's so much more happening beneath the surface mystery, danger, and secrets that slowly reveal themselves with each turn of the page. The author's humor is brilliantly woven throughout, which adds to the story.
The three main characters experience remarkable growth throughout the story, and the side characters are anything but. I have a feeling we'll be seeing much more of them in future books, and I'm here for it.
The author's writing is profound and purposeful. The plot is unlike any urban fantasy I've read it doesn't rush to reveal its hand but instead builds methodically. The ending leaves you asking questions: Why are these three so important? What comes next?
This book feels like home, and the characters feel like friends. I cannot wait for the next one.
This story follows three adults as they are taken from their regular lives and delivered to a new life because of their magical abilities that they are unaware of. They will soon learn. There is Maari. She has been there the longest and still doesn't know why but seems to go with the flow. Next, we have Tyler. He hasn't been there long. Last is Neen. She has been there as long as Tyler, so they have no clue what's going on. There are too many other great characters to talk about here, but read the book and experience them for yourself. Like Hannah, River, Emerald, and many more. I loved this book and the characters in it. I loved watching them discover their new abilities and how to use them. The banter amongst them and the adventures they go on. This book was such a fun read. Happy Reading, everyone...💖
This is such a sweet short book. For anyone who read Harry Potter as a child and now an adult wishing for all the magical hidden fantasy worlds to be true, this book is for you. Supernatural creatures, hidden worlds, witches, mages, a magical pub to wind down at. This book is only the beginning of what I’m sure will be a fun series to come. This book sets up the main characters as humans born with magical abilities that they are only now figuring out and learning about. They get brought to the magical world and so as we learn about the world they are too.
This book is Urban fantasy for adults. In this book the character learn who they are through unique ways. My favorite thing about the book is how the author takes you through so many different situations that has you scratching your head as it makes you feel like you are in the shoes of the characters navigating through the story. Can’t wait to hear what happens next.
This story was so fun! It was so refreshing to have older characters and the banter was amazing. The 3rd person omniscient POV was unique and felt like I was watching a TV drama as I floated to the important events from the POVs I needed to be with for those events. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.
A world full of magic, creatures and beings you could just dream of. And you get thrown into it. Not as a child, nor a teenager. But a full grown adult. What would YOU do? Have you ever thought about this yourself?
If you did then this book is definitely something you should read! Because you'll find not just one character, but three. Neen, Mari and Tyler all cope different with what they're thrown into. And I found myself sympathising with each of them at one point. Curious as one, sceptical as the other and embracing as the last one.
If you enjoy the charme of Supernatural, the parallel worlds of Shadowhunters and the adventures of Charmed, then this book is something for you!
A wonderful book and I'm looking forward to read the next book in this series!
