Slice of Life: The First Slice: A cozy, litRPG Isekai fantasy

Rate this book
He dies delivering a pizza, and wakes up in a world that’s never heard of it.

Instead of an afterlife, Geno DeLuca gets a quiet fantasy village, an abandoned bakery, and a strange System that lives inside his head. Most freshly summoned protagonists would grab a sword and start grinding stats, but not Geno. With no interest in heroics, he decides to start over the only way he knows how: by making pizza.

Unfortunately, he’s forced into a partnership with TeaCup, a tiny fairy with a big mouth, a bigger appetite, and a deeply held belief that Geno is doing everything wrong.

There isn’t technology or even electricity, and the village may not be New York, but is that a bad thing? Life is slower, the people are kinder, and he can’t complain (much) about the magic that exists in this world. The creepy bakers, though...

Warm, quirky, and full of heart, Slice of Life is a cozy, low-stakes litRPG Isekai fantasy about starting over, finding the family you never had, and a true foodie's love of the perfect pizza.

“It’s like joy and sin had a baby. And that baby was made of cheese.” -TeaCup

the pizza craving is realllll

It was beyond adorable. And all the pizza talk made me order pizza myself. From old bakery to pizzeria. And the welcoming of the village!! I can’t wait to see what happens next.

My reviews are my own. If you enjoyed this book, I'm glad you did. If not, I respect your opinion, so please respect mine. This is simply my perspective, so let's keep the discussion courteous. My review is honest and voluntary. As a reader, I read to escape the world and its issues, and my reviews reflect that.

I was ok with a grumpy character but it is mostly mean and rude; and after a while it gets tiring. If it wasn't for that character, TeaCup, I would have enjoyed it. It is well written but a tad repetitive and I do not like romance on my LitRPG. Not for me.

On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

Just finished Slice of Life by RK Billiau for the second time! It’s such a refreshing, witty, intelligent read. I found myself fascinated with the small, village and nostalgic for a time such as that. Can’t get enough of the characters. Perfect amount of magic/grit. Loved this book!

Masterclass in Cozy

Slice of Life - The First Slice by R.K. Billiau is a low-stakes, food-centric cozy fantasy. If you are a fan of books like Legends & Lattes, Heretical Fishing or Beers and Beards, this story sits comfortably in that exact subgenre.

The story follows Geno DeLuca, who dies while delivering a pizza in New York and is reincarnated (isekai’d) into a quiet fantasy village. Unlike your standard LitRPG protagonist who instantly grabs a sword to min-max their stats and save the world from an ancient evil, Geno has zero interest in heroics.

Discovering a strange gaming "System" in his head and an abandoned bakery in town, he decides to introduce his new magical neighbors to the one thing they've never heard of: the perfect pizza.

What Makes It Work
The Dynamic Duo: Geno is forced into an accidental partnership with TeaCup, a tiny, mouthy fairy with an insatiable appetite. Their constant bickering and her firm belief that Geno is doing everything wrong provide a lot of the book's humor and heart.

Low-Stakes & Comforting: This is a passion project meant to contrast with high-stress, world-ending fantasy tropes. The progression is tied to baking, building up a business, and integrating into a kinder, slower-paced village.

The "Foodie" Magic: Billiau leans heavily into a deep love of food. The descriptions of baking, magic-infused ingredients, and the community reactions to comfort food make it an incredibly warm, atmospheric read.

If you are looking for tense combat or complex political intrigue, you won't find it here. However, if you want a charming, feel-good palate cleanser with a unique culinary twist on the standard LitRPG formula, The First Slice delivers exactly what it promises: a cozy, comforting slice of life.
