Working underground, buried four-hundred feet down, five days a week is pretty much my life. I the nine years, nothing crazy has happened. But that is about to change. My whole world is about to blow, and there is nothing I can do to stop it from happening.

I normally keep to myself and try to stay away from others in fear that the wrong people will find out my secret. Being who I truly am is illegal, and would lead me, at best, to be an outcast in society. My dad and I just moved to Pittsburgh, where he got me a job at The Pittsburgh Coal Company, so I can help make ends meet. And one thing everyone seems to agree on without even saying it is that "I don't belong down there!" I am not built for this type of work.

I have to prove everyone wrong underground. One of the most dangerous jobs in the Industrial Industry, somewhere you are stuck with some gruff unpleasant men in the dark, that you would never want to go toe to toe with. Where the world above you could come crashing down just by swinging an axe at the wrong wall.

Then I met Jim, a man that not only promised to keep me safe but showed me there is a place for me in this world. Another place underground, and to get there you just need to follow the rainbow.

Heart Of Coal is a 115,000-word, Dual POV, MM Romance, set in the 1950's coal mining industry, and when it was illegal to be gay. It is a light-historical novel, written to give you a peek at the 50's without fully submerging you in the time period. About the author

Todd is a stay-at-home 'hubby' and currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pa, where this book is set. He transplanted there "Temporarily" from Atlanta, Ga in 2009, (Yeah. I'm still here), when the economy and housing market tanked, hitting especially hard in the south. He met his Partner 2.5 years later, trapping him here for good. They love to go to see touring Broadway Shows together for date nights and escape to Disney to visit Mickey and the gang.

Reading was never his favorite as a kid, since he had a learning and reading disability along with other problems. Somewhere along the way, he was guided by his grandmother and taught how to fall into a story, and be consumed by it. That reading can be fun, while learning at the same time.

In late 2024, he stumbled upon bookstagram, meeting and befriending other fellow book lovers, queer romance enthusiasts, and indie authors from all over the world, who help show the queer community representation, helping readers see themselves in media. Almost 2 years later, after learning the In's & Out's, He is now an Indie Author himself!

His goal is to tell stories that are impactful to the history of the Gay Rights Movement. Our history is long, and a lot of it has yet to be known or told. His hope is that the newer generation of the LGBTQIA+ Community and anyone else that has an interest in knowing about what our queer ancestors before us went through and did, so that our life could progress to the point it has today. But don't worry, he plans on writing some really fun and fluffy stories too!

There were things I really liked about this book, but also things I really didn’t enjoy. I’m going to give this a 3.5 rounded up. I did like the relationship between Charlie and Jim. It was very insta love, but I personally don’t mind that. Now what I didn’t enjoy was firstly, the dialogue needed some contractions. It sounded very formal and stilted at first imo because of the constant “I am…”. That’s a personal pet peeve of mine, so that bothered me. Second, I don’t think Charlie’s dad needed to die🤷‍♀️. I thought it was just unnecessary cruelty to Charlie’s character to leave him with zero parents, especially after taking basically the whole book to build Charlie’s dad up to be a supportive character in his life during a time when that was completely out of the ordinary. And lastly the epilogue left me in a somber mood and Charlie and Jim don’t even interact in it. I would not call that an epilogue at all personally. I guess I get what the author was trying to do with setting up their next book, but it was at the expense of Charlie and Jim imo.

First of all, this is a nice debut, and I really appreciate the research the author put into a story about 1950s Pittsburgh coal miners. The details about the mines and miner work are super vivid, and the books and movies woven in add a strong sense of the era. All of that genuinely brings some nice layers to the MCs.

That said, there are a few things holding this back from anything higher than 3⭐️.

First off, the MCs have about as much personality as a damp piece of toast—honestly, the side characters completely steal the show, which is a bummer. Plus, the romance goes from zero to one hundred in literally a week, and once that happens, it's just endless domestic fluff that completely drains the momentum.

Also, a huge chunk right in the middle—yep, all that cloying domestic fluff—drags like hell with zero actual event happening. When the villain finally shows up with some drama later on, their actions are riddled with plot holes and totally repetitive.

Honestly, the story lacks a secondary plotline outside of the romance, so it's just running on a single track the whole time. All that coal mining background just gets reduced to cheap set dressing, and even the mine owner ends up looking like a ridiculously understanding philanthropist. It feels way too good to be true and stays completely skin-deep.

And sure, the author clearly did some homework, but they completely skirt around the actual heavy-hitting realities. Where is the crushing weight of the workers' daily survival? Where is that gritty struggle of busting your ass in the dark for barely enough to scrape by? Where is the roaring, high-stakes collision between the union and the capitalists? Where are the actual, sharp-edged social conflicts of the era? You cannot hand me a story set in the Pittsburgh coal mines of the 1950s and honestly expect me not to go looking for the real, raw history beneath the surface.

At the end of the day, I'm just genuinely bummed out watching a historical setup like this squander all its grit and depth just to turn into another generic, sugary romance.

Wow! What an amazing debut novel! This story is a mix of passion and tenderness and fear and quiet revolution all mixed into one. This story is set in a coal mining town during the 1950s when it was illegal to be gay. And while it is marketed as a historical romance, the history aspect of the story did not take away from the romance.

Charlie and Jim are coal miners tasked with working together. Charlie is brand new to the job and Jim gets assigned to teach Charlie everything he needs to know. It’s pretty apparent from the get-go that both Charlie and Jim feel a connection between them, but they are both too afraid to act on it initially, given the time period.

An attack on Jim sparks Charlie to step up and opens the door to more between the two men. Charlie’s dad and Jim’s best friend help the two feel safe and these two were super cute. I wanted to squeeze Charlie and protect him and I wanted to heal Jim’s heart from the pain he’s endured.

The only thing that took me out of the experience a bit was the coal mining overload at the beginning - I know it was part of the story and Jim teaching Charlie but I felt like I was so inundated that I couldn’t keep up completely.

This book was set up well to continue the series and I’m excited to see where Jim, Charlie and the rest of their ensemble end up!

This cover pulled me in immediately. There is a tenderness to it that perfectly captures the feeling of the story. ❤️

Heart Of Coal is a romance set in the 1950s coal mining industry, during a time when being gay could cost you everything. It is a lighter historical romance that gives readers a glimpse into the era without fully immersing them in it, focusing instead on the characters, their struggles, and the family they build along the way.

I'll admit, at the beginning I wasn't completely convinced. The romance moves very quickly, with Jim and Charlie going from lingering looks and not-so-innocent thoughts to very strong feelings in a short amount of time. Normally, I prefer more build-up, but the further I got into the story, the more I understood it. In a world where finding someone who understands such a fundamental part of you is rare and dangerous, it felt easier to accept how intense their connection became.

Charlie is often portrayed as fragile, but I don't think he really is. He is stubborn, opinionated, and definitely not afraid to speak his mind. Sometimes that mouth of his gets him into trouble he can't get himself out of, but I appreciated that he refused to let people walk all over him.

And then there's Jim.

His protectiveness absolutely melted my heart. 🥹 Not just physically, but emotionally. The way he supports Charlie, reassures him, and stands by him through everything was easily one of my favourite parts of the book, even with some cringy horniness 😅😅😅

What surprised me most was how invested I became in the people surrounding them. David is the kind of friend everyone deserves, and Stewie quickly became another standout. The found family aspect ended up being one of the strongest parts of the story. Watching these characters support each other through fear, loss, prejudice, and uncertainty made the emotional moments hit even harder. ❤️

The second half also brought more action, higher stakes, and some genuinely heartbreaking moments. There was one particular loss that hit me hard, with the death of a very important character. 💔

I also loved seeing Jim and Charlie build a life beyond the mines. Watching them leave that world behind and find places where they could truly belong was incredibly satisfying. Jim becoming a librarian felt perfect, and Charlie finding his place in a bar that secretly serves as a safe haven for queer men was exactly the kind of future I wanted for them.

The writing does show signs of being a debut novel at times, occasionally feeling a little simplistic or overly explanatory, but the heart behind the story shines through. By the end, I found myself caring deeply about these characters and the life they built together.

And because I cannot write this review without mentioning it: the sex language was... colourful. 😅
We had the classics: "pole", "rod", "manhood", "meat", and "spear".

Then we reached Hall of Fame territory:

"I shimmied up to my knees, presenting my lightning rod that was sticking straight out horizontally."

Let's just say some of the euphemisms were an experience all of their own. ⚡😂

The final epilogue was bittersweet. While I loved seeing the found family still together decades later, the story briefly touches on the AIDS crisis, reminding readers that even after finding happiness, another devastating chapter in queer history was waiting around the corner. It was powerful, emotional, and left me with a sadness I wasn't entirely prepared for.

Despite some pacing issues and a few debut-author rough edges, this story completely won me over. At its core, Heart Of Coal is about love, family, loyalty, and finding people who make the world feel a little less frightening. ❤️

In exchange for an honest review i got to read the ARC of the book Heart of Coal by Tood B. Trees by the Author.

Charlie and his father Mike have just moved to Pittsburgh where they just have gotten a job in the coal mine a job that comes with many dangers, they get introduced to Jim that ends up beeing the one that going to train and teach Charlie how the inner work of the mine works. The attraction toward Charlie is instant and dangerous as in 1950's beeing gay openly were seen as a sin and were punished by imprisonment or worse the stigma of losing all rights to work and reputation. So gay men or women had to hide their attraction and feelings in fear of beeing cought. Something Both Charlie and Jim both have felt or seen themselves. Making their instant attraction so dangerous and forbidden.
When Jim gets assigned to learning Charlie he also are split from his best friend and long time partner David something that makes them both at first bitter and not a fan of Mike and Charlie.
But when a target is put on the new guys back Jim sees no other way than to protect the gorgeous new guy that does not look or fit in but even so is really determined to do the work in the mine in the middle of dangers lurking at all corners and the feelings between them slowly blooms.

This is a story about a forbidden slow burn love story that is packed into a coal mine where not everyone is friendly and only the strong minded men can work. This got some angst and sad moments but also some great and funny ones too, with two main characters that got an age gap relationship that is really put on the test as they have to navigate the dangers of beeing gay in a society that look at it as a sin. This debute story from Tood I can for sure say is a strong one you dont wanna miss out on becuse its deffently in the run for this years story of the year in my book! I wanna highly recommend this story becuse this is one you dont want to miss out on, a story with realistic and historic dips and a world building that is easy to get addicted to!

This book is exactly my kind of story.

We get a historical setting in 1950s America and, on top of that, a topic I have never seen explored in a historical MM romance before: working in the mines. That alone immediately caught my attention.

From a social-historical perspective, the book does a fantastic job. It shows just how carefully gay men had to navigate the world at the time in order to avoid drawing attention to themselves. I also loved the historical details woven into the story, such as the code phrase "Friend of Dorothy." (Fun fact: the US military actually formed a task force to find out who this mysterious Dorothy was. 🤣)

But enough about the history—let's talk about the characters. Both the main and side characters completely pulled me into the story. They felt real, memorable, and more than a few of them had me wanting to absolutely lose my mind. 😭

Overall, this is a very accessible and enjoyable read, while still delivering plenty of tension and emotional investment. And even when the realities of the time are not described in detail, they are always present in the background, shaping the characters and their choices.

A wonderful story with fascinating historical elements and characters that are impossible not to care about.

I truly enjoyed this read. For me it falls between four and five stars, earning the .5 for 4.5 due to the fantastic job it does at transporting us into the Mt. Washington coal mines of Pittsburgh. As a yinzer myself and someone who has worked in the coal industry, at times this was an emotionally challenging read as even to this day, this is the very reality many members of the LGBTQ+ community face in coal country.

I loved the MCs, with Charlie and Jim each providing different perspective of the reality of being gay in the 1950's. The romance itself was whirlwind paced going from side eyeing each other to full on domestic house spouses rather fast. And yes, that presents a challenge to the reader, but also ... it was the 1950s ... it was love at first sight. The circumstances force timelines that may not be realistic in our modern times.

A lot happens in the back half of the book. And Todd, our author, did a fantastic job at taking us on a journey that felt both familiar but also uncertain. There were items that one could read coming a mile away and then there were events that I would have never predicted. Providing for both a feel-good (or as good as the plight of being gay in the 1950's can feel) read and also some unexpected twists and turns to the story.

Heart of Coal is a story really committed to the historical setting; it's set in the 1950s, and you really feel that as you read through the way things are described and the language. Todd B. Trees does a great job; considering this is a debut, yes, the writing does feel simplistic at times, and some of the descriptors in the spice scenes do fall into the typical trap of using funny words to describe body parts. However, there is a lot of warmth in this book, between Charlie & Jim and The Undergrounds customers.

Debut comin in full force!

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2026 and let me say, it blew me away!

Todd's writing and details to the 1950s era was written beautifully. The chemistry between Jim & Charlie is one to behold, it truly shows how love at first sight unfolds before anyone knows what's going on.

But it also showed the struggles and fears that they endured during that time era as it was illegal for them to be themselves.

You'll laugh, cry, want to throw your kindle (please don't do that though). Go experience the journey with Charlie, Jim, & The Underground today. I promise you won't be disappointed.

OMG this was an absolutely breath of fresh air to read. This is book 1 in the Hearts through time series. I love MM romances that are dated back in time. Plus, I was born in a part of the country where coal was a big deal for my little town, so I decided to pick this wonderful book up.
Jim and Charlie are the characters in this book, and I felt they were created so well. I love how the put so much attention to little detail in this book. This book was just so easy to read I flew through it so fast granted it was a 400 plus page book and I was blown away. this is the first time I have read anything by this author, and I was so impressed I'm really interested to see how this amazing series continues.

Heart of Coal is the first book in the Hearts Through Time series and is the author´s debut novel.

It's set in 1950 in the Appalachian coal-mining region. (Very well done, by the way, with all the cultural references and even the language.)

Jim works in the mine alongside his best friend. One day, Charlie and his father arrive for work, and the foreman assigns Charlie to work with Jim—despite all the dangers involved in working in a coal mine.

They both share the same secret, and passion and feelings blossom between them.

The story also depicts homophobia on the part of a couple of characters.

I really liked the guys at the bar, especially Stewie.

I want to keep reading the series.

So… I liked parts of this book, but it could have been 100 pages shorter. The upsides was the instalove, the relationship between the MMCs and the dad, and the other side characters. It was nice world building. I also enjoyed the research which obviously went on for the era. The downsides, after the instalove, it felt very fluffy domesticated. I didn’t really care that much about that meals they were having together. Also the over use of the word “honey”, it was a bit tedious, and I like pet names, it was almost every sentence. Prob could have saved 50 pages by removing that one word. More than likely will read the next in the series as it was sweet, and I enjoyed it, but hopefully it will be edited a bit more and unnecessary words/passages can be removed so the story is the main focus.

This is a mild slowburn, lite historical romance. The author wrote the novel like he opened a time-portal door, and you watched from the other side without getting fully submerged in the 1950s. The tension and conflict mixed with the relationship of Jim & Charlie is balanced out with the help of friends & Family.

This debut novel is a great way to take a peek to the past before the Gay Right Movements got its momentum, when underground was the only safe place to be yourself.

Whenever I pick up a book that’s set in a real place and time, especially one that I have visited, I always approach with caution. There’s that overlapping of reality versus fiction. This is the first historical MM Romance I have read in a long time that did not make me cringe from the dialogue.

There was appropriate use of 1950s slang and you can tell that great care was taken in research before this written because it’s so realistic and true to the time period.

All I can say is that you will laugh, you will cry and you will fall in love with these miners of Coal in the most fantastic way possible.

I had the honor of beta-reading this for Todd, and I truly enjoyed the story. Set in the generalized 1950s, this is a story about two men finding love when being gay was illegal. As a debut novel, this is a good read. I do wish there had been a more specific time within the 1950s, perhaps a range of a couple of years rather than a whole decade, as a lot can change and evolve during that time. The old school euphemisms during sexy scenes did bring me out of it a bit and gave me a chuckle. If that was the intention, then mission accomplished! The attention to detail was sometimes a bit much, and ending where it did was an interesting choice. Overall, this was a good debut.

One of my big peeves about historical fiction of any kind is when the history part is slighted. Kudos to this author for taking me inside I world I really wanted to explore - 1950s coal mining. There were lots of details at the beginning to set me up for the world Jim and Charlie were going to inhabit. A world I haven't seen in an MM romance before. I enjoyed the relationship between Jim and Charlie and how that built as a result of mentoring and protectiveness as Jim trains Charlie who is definitely a fish out of water initially in the mines. There are some heartbreaking spots in this read. I'm very much looking forward to more in this series from this author.

This was a very sweet, age gap romance set in the 1950s when men showing feelings for other men could be very dangerous. Jim and Charlie meet at a coal mine and quickly realize they are attracted to each other. The historical aspect added some really cool world building to the story. Lovely Romance and Fascinating History

I enjoyed this a lot. The relationship between Jim and Charlie was so sweet and loving and I enjoyed seeing Charlie’s growth from when he and his dad first came in to town. Aside from the main relationship there is great found family here to support Jim and Charlie. I really enjoyed the historical aspect - makes me so angry at the injustice of how people had to live their lives in hiding. I feel like the author did a great job or portraying that time and that place in history. Will looking forward to the next in the series.

This romance is about two coalminers! I was captured by the title and cover without actually knowing this. I will say this is a stunning first novel by Todd. I was transported to the 1950's where these types of romances were actually illegal and top of that they were working a difficult and dangerous job. I was beyond invested in everything happening to Jim and Charlie, the job and their own personal struggles. The romance that bloomed topped it all off. This is a definite re read for me and hopefully an audible experience.

You would never know this was the authors debute book. It was written so beautifully, and I could feel all of the emotion throughout. The characters went through pain, hiding, and uncertainty, and you could feel it all. This book was so well written, that I could picture everything as he described it. While I don't know a lot about that era, think the author did the research to convey how it would be living in that time period. Jim and Charlie get their HEA, as ideal as possible considering. Wow what a debut novel.
This story had me feeling every emotion, I laughed at the banter and side characters, I cried for jimmy, Charlie and Mike.
It also tells of the struggles of being gay in the 50's when it was illegal and what jimmy and Charlie had to do to overcome it and live the way they were suppose too.
I can't wait for the next book.

This story is set in a time when it was illegal to love someone of the same sex. It could also be downright dangerous. But love finds a way, no matter what. Charlie and Jim meet in the mine they work in, which is also dangerous. I cried, I laughed, and I swooned a bit over Charlie and Jim's story.

Heart of Coal hooked me from the beginning!!! This was my first historical queer romance book, and while the story is fictional it is rooted around real facts about what it was like to like in the 1950’s being queer. It gave me a different perspective on how far we have come.

Jimmy and Charlie took me for a ride and have etched themselves so into my heart. I truly keep think about them and wondering what they would be like if they lived in today’s society where they didn’t have to hide their love from the public eye, or be run out of town , or have options for jobs besides working in the mine!

Charlie and Jim are coal miners who fall in love. The story was more engaging than I expected.

I loved this book so much! It was such an amazing read. Gives you insight into a homosexuality in the 50s. What a different world we are in now. The characters are so fun and relatable and you want the best for everyone.
There are twists in this book and some heartbreaking moments. 100% need to add to your TBR.
