From the establishment of the Kingdom of Dalriada in Argyll by Fergus Mor, around AD 500, through to the forfeiture of the Lordship a thousand years later - St Columba's settlement in Iona, the depredations of the Vikings, the emergence of Somerled, the story of the Bruce - this is Scotland's history told in coherent narrative style.
An excellent and very readable account of the history of not just of the Lords of the Isles but of Scotland, Ireland, England and Man as they influenced and impacted upon the former. At times poetic in style - and including a welcome selection of poetic sources - while it requires concentration to absorb the many names, events and the relationships between them, it makes for a very rewarding and enlightening read. The author's command of his subject results in a fluent and very coherent history.
