Family is everything. Even when not connected by blood.

For third-generation rancher Joe Cunningham, the treacherous Rio Grande is more than just a river, it’s a source of frustration and financial loss. As migrants use his land to enter the United States illegally, they destroy his property and put his livestock—and livelihood—at risk.

Migrant crossings increase, forcing Joe to take matters into his own hands. Instead of following protocol, he delivers trespassers directly to Border Patrol. That is, until a young boy, abandoned by the very people Joe has been fighting against, puts his values to the test.

Exhausted and alone, Luis clings to his teddy bear and Joe's loyal dog as his only sources of comfort. But to Joe, the boy represents something more—a glimpse of the son he lost years ago. The more time he and Luis spend together, Joe not only realizes that he's been missing out on the joys of fatherhood but also questions everything he thought he knew about illegal immigration.

As the Cartels close in and Border Patrol hinders his efforts, Joe must rely on the strength and determination of his tight-knit community to keep Luis safe. With his own men falling victim to the ruthless Cartels, Joe knows that time is running out.

Desperate to retrieve their lost merchandise, the Cartels force Joe to make a life-threatening Hand over the boy and give up the newfound purpose in his life, or risk everything to protect him.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I absolutely love how Kristi Copeland can take a controversial topic and turn it into a story that’s heartfelt, thought provoking, and impossible to put down! Eagle Pass is another reminder of why I’ll always read her books!

Joe was such a compelling character. After everything he’s been through, it was easy to understand why he viewed the world the way he did. Watching his perspective slowly change as he got to know Luis was definitely one of my favorite parts of the book! Their relationship was heartfelt, genuine, and showed how one person can completely change another’s life. ❤️

This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I laughed, I smiled, I was shocked, I was angry, I was heartbroken… it really took me through all the emotions! The characters felt so real, and I found myself completely invested in their lives and the bond they all have!

And that epilogue? I absolutely LOVED it. It wrapped everything up perfectly and left me closing the book with such a full heart. 🥹

If you’re looking for a story that makes you think while also taking you on an emotional journey, I definitely recommend Eagle Pass! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Eagle Pass by Kristi Copeland.

Kristi Copeland’s Eagle Pass: A Contemporary Fiction about the War at Our Southern Border immerses you in this fraught landscape between America and Mexico, exploring family, loss, and longing through a narrative that shows immigration policy not as it is, but as it feels.

Joe Cunningham, a third-generation rancher struggling physically and mentally with the impact of illegal crossings on his land, is at the center of the novel. Copeland’s story is a visceral thriller, an urgent and harrowing tale of personal loss set against broader social division, and it feels especially timely amid contemporary debates on immigration.

Eagle Pass earns its distinction as more than a regional tale by offering a blunt rendering that invites close questioning. Through one character’s perspective, it examines familiar cultural and media tropes often attached to people living on or near these tense borderlines.

But Copeland adds an unexpected layer of tenderness to Joe's story, especially in the way he bonds with a young migrant boy named Luis, who is also vulnerable. That emotional shift—from confrontation to compassion—gives the story its heart and avoids the binaries that border conflict stories often trade in.

There is remarkable strength in the book's character development. Joe draws with an earnestness that never drifts into caricature; his most extreme moments are reserved for grief over his son, who passed away, and he wears layers of armour, forged slowly over time, that slowly melt in true human tenderness.

Luis, on the other hand, is treated sympathetically without ever coming close to sentimentality. Their relationship is a provocative consideration of what it means to be bond brothers, particularly when such links are non-genetic and forged through adversity.

Copeland writes simply and beautifully, deftly evoking the roughness of both rural life as well as the tension that hangs over those borderlands. Some readers will wish for more stylistic sparkle or more complex world-building than the immediate narrative requires, although in truth a brisk pace and a tightly defined set of circumstances provide ample opportunity to sustain suspense throughout.

The cartels encroaching on both sides introduce an ominous, darker antagonist, raising the stakes and giving the narrative a noir-like feel. The plot's urgency, however, at times borders on old hat, with well-thumbed tropes, including references to border violence and law-enforcement friction, that sometimes dilute the richness of its themes.

Eagle Pass strikes a good balance between thematic depth and pleasurable storytelling, though some secondary characters lack deeper development. The community around Joe is, instead, a kind of patchwork representation, which robs the naturalistic world of some colour. The novel certainly conveys the atmosphere of isolation and perseverance that comes with life in such a combustible place.

Eagle Pass is a powerful and emotional read that gives humanity to an issue many people misunderstand or politicize. For readers attuned to socially conscious fiction that explores serious issues surrounding immigration and border enforcement, it will hit the mark.

Kristi Copeland’s Eagle Pass is, therefore, an object lesson in a world beyond its own: a reminder that compassion remains possible even in harsh landscapes, and that stories where the personal and political coalesce are worth paying attention to. It asks us whether we are protecting not just land, but humanity itself.

4.5/5 This book is about a man and his staff on a Texas Ranch where many immigrants have begun to cross illegally. It is powerful, thought provoking & important to allow time to let this one sit a bit. This story is so wonderfully told with grace and sensitivity while tackling sensitive situations. I felt like I was hearing from Joe about his life. His emotions and growth throughout this book come through very clearly. As Joe begins to understand and see things through the eyes of Luis the growth and love are felt through his actions. Joe has had a very hard life with death and tragedy. (I can’t elaborate on that without spoiling things that are important to find out as you read). When Luis enters his life it is touching to see the love and connection they have instantly for one another. I wish one of the characters would have been in the story throughout and not just the very end. I really liked her and would have loved more of her involvement throughout the book. This isn’t a book I normally would have grabbed and I’m so glad I read it! I was an ARC reader for this book and I’m so thankful to Kristi Copeland for the opportunity. It is my honor to have been one of the first readers of this story. I wish my review could share more details without giving things away. But truly READ THIS!! This would be an amazing book club book! I should join one so I can discuss it LOL!

Heart warming and action packed. This was an emotion packed story for what it was. I enjoyed that dynamic of it.

Joe a rancher, who's property is in the line of border patrol, comes across a young boy Luis who gives Joe a glimpse of his lost son back. It becomes a life and death struggle of whether to give Luis up.

The close relationship that develops with Luis is sweet but dangerous. Joe isn't fully aware of the dangers that come, against him and Luis. But he will do everything he can to protect the young child.

Full of danger, drama and suspense as well as an emotional aspect that makes this book original and must read.

I highly recommended this book and also this author. Her stories are action, adventure, suspense and drama in a story worth telling. So fantastic!!

This book was a powerful reminder that family is built through love, loyalty, and the people who choose to stand beside you, not just the ones you’re related to. The story was incredibly raw and meaningful, balancing compassion with the difficult reality of protecting the land, traditions, and home that mean so much.

I loved how it explored helping those in need while acknowledging that kindness doesn’t have to come at the cost of losing what you hold dear. The characters felt authentic, their struggles were deeply emotional, and every chapter carried purpose.

Beautifully written, thought-provoking, and full of heart, this is a story that will stay with me long after I turned the final page. An easy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read that I highly recommend.

Joe…what an amazing man!! This is a story of a hard heart turned soft. One of perseverance, pain, hurt, and determination! The story takes place on a Texas ranch, where illegal migrants began causing harm. With some twists and turns the reader finds out quickly there is more to it than what meets the eye. A book that truly pulls at your heart as one man’s journey to save what is his, causes him to lose so much! But even after loss, there is the possibility of hope!

Oh goodness. This author is so good at approaching hard topics. The books of hers that I’ve read have all touched me. This one hit home since I’m originally from TX, albeit north TX, but still, and because of how the world seems to be going these days. A trigger warning I’d give this book would be if you are or care for immigrants this one may not be for you.

I loved this book and can’t wait for this authors next story to touch my heart!

I can’t pick my favorite Kristi Copeland book!
This author took me into Joe’s land just north of the Rio Grande where dangerous coyotes transport migrants… and worse. Joe typically captured the immigrants and turned them in to the sheriff, but when he found a lost little boy clutching his teddy bear, Joe’s world changed forever. This was an action-packed adventure that gave me so much to consider. I loved the twists and turns!

Definitely an interesting read I applaud the author for tackling a sensitive topic like illegal immigration. It’s also a different storyline from what I’ve read in her other book “Buried Scars” which is what I look for in other authors. So it’s nice to see that she can tackle any issue and create an engaging story that really draws the reader’s attention in a compelling way.
