Agatha Christie is on the book club’s reading list in the latest from the author of The Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco. This time, Amy-Faye and her friends might have to read between the lines to catch a killer.
Amy-Faye Johnson’s book club, the Readaholics, is engrossed in Murder on the Orient Express, and Poirot’s surprising resolution is stirring up debate. Is the solution remotely realistic? Is justice served by Poirot's decision? Well, the book is fiction after all…
Then, just as Amy-Faye is planning the grand opening of her brother Derek’s pub, his hot-headed partner is murdered. To keep Derek from being railroaded as a suspect, Amy-Faye and the Readaholics take a page from Poirot and investigate. But as the clues lead to unlikely places, surprising motives, and a multitude of suspects, Amy-Faye and her pals wonder if truth can be just as strange as fiction.
I'm the author of the Swift Investigations, Mall Cop and Readaholics mystery series.
After twenty years as an Air Force intelligence officer – serving as a squadron commander, with the National Reconnaissance Office, and at a fighter wing – I retired to parenting and writing full-time.
Not quite as good as the first but still fun. DiSilverio has an easy writing style that's filled with natural humor and spark. It's not sanitized as some cozies are and doesn't feel awkward. Having the book club theme suits it - there were clues that tied in with their book of the month, Murder on the Orient Express. It spoils the end of the book if you haven't read that Agatha classic, so be warned.
I love how they discuss the book, watch the movie afterwards, and how the author tosses in kudos to other authors and fictional detectives. One character thinks Dorothy Sayers is dry, as an example, and one person said Agatha Christie writes well but has distant emotion to where characters are not relate-able. Kinsey Milhorn is referenced a lot by the main character Amy-Faye, and even some Stephanie Plum humor is thrown in for good measure.
The mystery wasn't quite possible to full guess, some of it kind of comes together in the end. This time Amy has to clear her brother's name when his angry, loser partner is found murdered opening night. There are plenty of suspects since the man was generally loathed, but unfortunately most of the signs point toward brother dearest.
I see a potential love triangle brewing but let's hold our breath and hope not. The small town setting gives an everyone-knows-everyone charm which complements this story type. While it's best to start with the first book in the series, it's fine to be read as a standalone.
THE READAHOLICS AND THE POIROT PUZZLE by Laura DiSilverio is the second book in the Book Club Mystery series. It is a humorous cozy mystery that is well written and worked well as a standalone.
The plot takes place in and around Heaven, Colorado, a town that changed its name to try to attract more visitors to the community. The protagonist is Amy-Faye Johnson, an event coordinator. This includes all types of events ranging from weddings to birthday parties to community yard sales to the grand opening of her brother's pub. Unfortunately, a murder takes place during the pub's grand opening. With this synopsis, Amy-Faye pursues the murderer and enlists the help of her book club members.
This novel is filled with interesting characters and is an entertaining read. To me, the Poirot connection was weak and the culprit was not too hard to determine, but I have having so much fun in Heaven, Colorado that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Additionally, the author brought in several themes that added to the heartfelt storyline besides murder including running small businesses, adoption, family dynamics and even a little romance.
While this is first book that I have read by Laura DiSilverio, I look forward to reading other books in this and her other mystery series. She has also written a young adult dystopian series and I have book one of it on my to-be-read list.
A highly recommended read! Just like the first book in the series I absolutely loved it!The writing style pulled my right into the story and didn't let me go again. A good amount of suspects and even though there were leads all through the book that pointed to the killer I didn't pick up on them until the reveal.
Another cosy mystery referencing Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. I enjoyed this one a lot, just as much as Mayhem at the Orient Express, which I read last month. Just a warning: if you haven't read the original Christie and you don't want to have the solution spoiled, read it before this book. DiSilverio assumes your knowledge of Poirot's adventure to inform this mystery.
I picked the first novel in this series last May because it was related to The Maltese Falcon, which I had recently read. The book club selection featured in the third novel is Du Maurier's Rebecca. I don't think I want to read that book again, but maybe I'll try another of her novels before I tackle it. But I will certainly read the third novel.
I'm somewhat disappointed that there are only three books in the series, but since the story is almost equally about Amy-Faye's romantic life, the scope is limited. She seems to be well on her way by the end of this adventure, so one assumes that things will resolve in the third novel. Like a fairy tale, things end “happily ever after,” as if nothing more of any consequence can happen to a woman once she achieves a relationship! Despite that, I like DiSilverio's writing. My library has a number of her other books which I will definitely put on my possible list.
Elysium Brewing is about to open in Heaven, Colorado, and Amy-Faye Johnson is handling the opening event for her brother. Unfortunately, not all is heavenly between Derek and his business partner, Gordon Marsh, but is it enough for Derek to kill Gordon? With suspects aplenty, Amy-Faye and her book club friends, the Readaholics, will have to solve this mystery as Derek is law enforcement’s primary suspect.
Laura DiSilverio’s delightful second entry in A Book Club Mystery has the Readaholics focusing on the classic Agatha Christie novel, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. I love the way Laura DiSilverio weaves the Readaholics’ current reading choice into the storyline as you wonder which clues are actually red herrings and which ones will lead to the real murderer. It’s easy to jump right into THE READAHOLICS AND THE POIROT PUZZLE if you haven’t read the first book, but quite frankly I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want to spend more time with this quirky and entertaining cast of characters!
And yes, the characters in THE READAHOLICS AND THE POIROT PUZZLE are just sheer fun! Amy-Faye is torn between her budding relationship with Detective Lindell Hart and her loyalty to her brother, but she juggles things quite well. However, it is the revelations we get about Maud that really piqued my interest as I’m dying to know more about this whistle-blowing, conspiracy-seeking hippie!
THE READAHOLICS AND THE POIROT PUZZLE is another fun and engaging story in A Book Club Mystery series. The concept itself- a mystery book club that solves murders- is sheer genius! However, Laura DiSilverio delivers that and so much more as the Readaholics are already beginning to feel like old friends that I want to visit over and over. Highly recommended!
*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review*
This is an enjoyable cozy mystery and a good followup to the first book in the series. I enjoyed reading about the members of the book club and their determination to solve a murder. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I have so much fun reading cozy mysteries!!! I'm sad that this series only has 3 books though!
So warning of you have not read Murder on the Orient Express and plan to read it you probably should wait to read this one! They do tell you what happens in that book as that's the theme for this one.
I really enjoyed it. But wasn't surprised in who killed Gordon. It's not totally predictable but at the same time.....
The Readaholics and the Poirot Puzzle is right up my aisle. Amy-Faye is an event planner, but more importantly, she’s a member of a mystery book club. This month they’re reading Murder on the Orient Express, one of my favorites, so of course when a murder occurs, more than one of the readaholics is thinking it might be a conspiracy.
This is the first in the series I’ve read but I had no trouble jumping right into the characters and their lives. Amy-Faye has organized the grand opening of her brother’s new brewery, but his business partner is found dead in the dumpster in the middle of the party—probably not good for business, definitely not good for her brother who gets arrested. Of course, Amy-Faye and the gang have to clear her brother’s name and keep the brewery running.
Amy-Faye and her friends are fun to hang out with. They each have their own careers and quirks, they’re very different from each other but fit together well. Amy-Faye’s almost boyfriend is a cop of course, (why do so many of these amateur sleuths date police?), but they actually manage to be reasonable about the whole he had to arrest her brother thing. I’m going to ignore the ex-boyfriend who’s back in town—I’m not a fan of love triangles and would hate to see one here.
The mystery is fine. I liked how it all tied together. And our sleuth did not put herself in danger. Well, maybe she did, but it worked out without her needing saved, which is always nice.
This was a fun cozy mystery and I just enjoy that it loves mystery novels as much as I do.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one and am looking forward to reading the next. The one thing that truly bothered me was the tendency towards repetition of certain facts or information. Otherwise a good, easy read with some terrific characters.
A very enjoyable read! I loved the mystery of this one, it was very entertaining and kept me guessing. I really love the characters in this series and my favorite element is all the bookish tie in and the bookish theme overall. A fantastic cozy series in my opinion.
A well written cozy mystery that is fairly simple to follow and solve, Laura has once again created a story that feels like getting into a hot bath. It is completely absorbing and engrossing. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I cant wait to get to the third book in this series.
Amy-Faye is helping prepare for the opening of her brother Derek's brew-pub, when his financial partner turns up dead in a dumpster. With her brother as the most obvious suspect, Amy-Faye and her Readaholics book club go to work to figure out who killed Gordon and to clear Derek's name. There are plenty of suspects, with plenty of reasons to want Gordon dead. The book club has just read Christie's Murder on the Orient Express and they wonder whether there could be as complex a conspiracy going on here! And while trying to find the truth about Gordon, Amy-Faye is also trying to juggle her events business, her deepening relationship with the hot police detective, and the needs of her friends. This is the second in the Readaholics series, but can be read as a stand-alone. (I did read the first, The Readaholics and the Falcon Fiasco after reading Poirot Puzzle. And enjoyed, it, too!) The characters are warm and enjoyable, and I look forward to seeing them even further fleshed out in future installments. The community, renamed Heaven a couple of decades ago, provides a comfortable setting with small-town gossip, wedding tourism, and a variety of events for Amy-Faye to organize. Her family, her history with so many of the town characters as well as her business interactions provide a complex backdrop. I received an Advance Reading Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of The Readaholics and the Poirot Puzzle in exchange for a fair and honest review. This was a first introduction to the writer and her work. As a first time reader of Ms DiSilverio's I was quickly drawn into the goings on in Heaven, Colorado and more specifically the life of Amy-Faye Johnson and her book club, the Readaholics.
Event planner, A-Faye, as she is known to family and friends, is working on the grand opening of her brother's new brew pub. Family and friends have invested heavily in Derek's new business, along with a business partner/investor who turns up dead. Many people had a beef with, or would benefit from, the death including Derek. Standing by her brother, A-Faye sets out to prove her brother innocent and find the true murderer, but can she clear Derek's name and save the day? Guess you'll have to read the book to find out who done it..and you will enjoy every turn of the page as you work your way there.
I really enjoyed the characters in the book and could see myself fitting in with the book club members. Every gal should have loyal friends who would not only help them hide a body if the need arose, but who step up and help solve a murder when needed as well. I enjoyed this one so much that I'm going to order the first book and preorder the next in the series the second I can!
In this second installment of the Book Club Mysteries, event planner Amy-Faye Johnson and her book club, known as the Readaholics, decide to review Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. Little did they know that they would soon be embarking on a mystery just as puzzling.
At Amy-Faye's painstakingly planned grand opening event for her brother, Derek's, brewpub, Elysium Brewing, in their hometown of Heaven, Colorado, things suddenly start going horribly wrong. Just when when she thinks things cannot get any worse, Amy-Faye discovers Derek's business partner, Gordon Marsh, dead in the brewpub's dumpster. Gordon had no shortage of enemies in both his business and personal life, but mounting evidence and events point to Derek as the prime suspect. Amy-Faye, along with her book club friends Maud, Kerry, Brooke and Lola are determined to investigate all the likely suspects and find the real murderer and clear Derek's name.
This book was entertaining right from the beginning and has a very engaging cast of characters. You find yourself puzzling about all the potential suspects right along with the Readaholics and Amy-Faye, and even wondering, like they did, "What would Hercule Poirot do?".
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The Readaholics and the Poirot Puzzle by Laura DiSilverio
Review by Jessica Secrest
I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The Readaholics and the Poirot Puzzle by Laura DiSilverio is a great read. The protagonist, Amy-Faye Johnson, is a quirky, self-employed, organized woman with strong family ties. After her brother's partner is murdered and the blame falls on her brother, Amy-Faye feels it is her duty to clear his name. Her friends in the Readaholics book club step up to help her solve this mystery.
Laura DiSilverio character is written in the first person. Amy-Faye is wonderful at describing her surroundings and the other characters allowing the reader to have a visual feast in the mind's eye about what is going on around Amy-Faye and her feelings.
Amy-Faye's love life is teetering on the brink. It is charming and sweet. The ensemble of characters are well rounded, leaving the reader to feel that you know who they are. They have their secrets and some you are allowed to glimpse. The names of the businesses in the town of Heaven are just fun.
Laura DiSilverio's title kept me guessing up to the end as to who really killed Gordon Marsh. The truth comes out and it is sad. The real reasons that led to his murder are heartbreaking. Murder always is.
The Readaholics are a book club who meet at each other's house to discuss chosen mysteries. They are a diverse group and have become friends over time by being in the club. The book being discussed at this session is Murder on the Orient Express. Amy Faye, the protagonist, is an event planner. Amy Faye is in charge of planning the opening night of her brother's new brew club. It should have gone like clock work but events start to happen. A murder occurs and suspicion goes on Amy-Faye's brother. The book club meets to discus the solution of the murder. They try to relate the Orient Express book to the murder. Amy Faye is determined to clear her brother from the suspicion.
This is the second book in the series and I have enjoyed both books. There is a great cast of characters and the plotting is strong. There were many suspects. I liked the character of Al who works with Amy Faye in her company. It looks like the romance angle could develop into two suitors which seems to be part of many cozy series. .This is a good new cozy series which cozy readers should enjoy.
I really enjoyed my second mystery with the readaholics and it's fun how life imitates the book they happen to read. This time they read Murder on the Orient Express and I was glad I had read it before as it helped me relate when they were talking about the book and how it might relate to the current murder they were helping to solve. I like the characters (still don't like Amy-Faye's name) and the setting. I liked Derek's brewery and hope he can make a go of it. These books are a lot of fun and I enjoy the premise of them.
I just can't say enough how much I love Cozies. It was fun to see the book the Readaholics read in this story is one I've read in real life.
Amy-Faye is such a fun character and I enjoy how determined, smart and loveable she is. The Readaholics are a great addition to the mystery-solving and makes me wish I had a club full of fun women like this LOL
Definitely digging this series and can't wait to read more of it.
Amy-Faye's book club is engrossed in their book --Murder on the Orient Express. She is also busy planning the grand opening of her brother's pub. Her brother's partner is suddenly murdered. Amy and her club decide to investigate since they do not want her brother to be accused......Lots of suspects and clues happening. They start to wonder if truth can be just as strange as fiction. Good read and I like the author's style of writing.
An interesting retelling of the Mystery On the Orient Express in cozy form. Amy-Faye's brother and his new pub are in trouble! Really enjoying this series. Excited to check out the next book.
In this second book, Amy-Faye is solving the mystery behind the murder of her brother's brew-pub partner at the opening of the pub -Elysium Brewing - she has organised, to save her brother who unfortunately is suspected for murder. To save her brother from trial readaholics help Amy-Faye in finding the murderer. I liked the chemistry between detective Heart and Amy-Faye, the way they handled their relationship and investigation. This was as interesting as the first book. The way mystery was solved was amazing.
Amy-Faye Johson is working on the grand opening plan for her brother, Derek's, brewpub, Elysium Brewing. But during the evening, several unfortunate incidents occurred to disrupt the grand opening, culminating in the murder of his partner, Gordon Marsh. When the police arrest her brother for his murder, Amy-Faye realizes she has to help find the culprit herself. But it appears that everyone had a reason to hate Gordon, so there are just too many suspects. With the help of her reading club, she hopes to analyze everyone's movements that night, in a manner similar to what Poirot did in their assigned reading, Murder on the Orient Express. Like the book, is it possible there was more than one person involved in this murder? I enjoyed the story and the twists and turns in the mystery solution, as well as the characters and their interactions. Amy-Faye's ex-boyfriend, Doug, returns to town and she has to figure out her feelings for him, as well as her new relationship with Hart. As an aside, I love her reading material (Lady Georgiana) and enjoyed it when her club try to recreate the murder. I look forward to the next book in this series. Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Readaholics and the Poirot Puzzle (A Book Club Mystery #2) by Laura DiSilverio
Amy-Faye Johnson’s book club, the Readaholics, are currently reading Murder on the Orient Express, and Poirot’s surprising resolution is stirring up debate but Amy-Faye has bigger problems coming her way! Amy-Faye is planning the grand opening party of her brother, Derek’s pub and right in the middle of the big party; his hot-headed partner is murdered. To keep Derek from being put away for good and labeled a murderer for the rest of his life, Amy-Faye and the Readaholics use their recent Poirot experience to investigate. The group starts investigating and soon realizes that the deceased had A LOT of enemies and no one to really mourn the loss. Is it possible that there is more than one murderer? This was a great read for me-lots of suspects, action and a little bit of romance all brought together in an excellent mystery that kept me guessing until the end! I loved the characters and the town of Heaven, Colorado, as well as the interesting backdrop of party planning, book club, and the brewery. I will definitely be continuing on with this series!
This is the second entry in the Readaholics Book Club Mystery series by Laura DiSilverio. This author has four other series with about three books in each. So she is well immersed in the mystery field. All the elements are here. There are friends, family, community members, a touch of romantic entanglement, a loved one under suspicion and motives all around. The amateur sleuth Amy- Faye Johnson is an event planner. There’s a dash of that industry here also. My disappointment in this work was that in using the book club backdrop the author has many references to the Agatha Christie novel Murder on the Orient Express that are spoilers for anyone that hasn’t read that work yet. I feel there are many ways she could have discussed elements of the book, the setting, time period, the detective, etc. without giving away the ending. So my recommendation is that if you have had Murder on the Orient Express in your pile of TBR (to be read) pile, move it to the top to enjoy before you read The Readaholics and the Poirot Puzzle. I was provided a copy of the book to read and write an honest review.
This book is apparently the second book in the "Readaholics" series, and I wasn't aware of it at the time. I decided to read it anyway, and if I enjoyed it, then I'd go back and read book one. Well, I did enjoy it, and will be reading book one and other subsequent books in the series. The leading character if Amy-Faye Johnson. She is a 20-something events planner who lives in a small town in Colorado called Heaven. She is very good at her job and maintains a successful business mostly because she is a very organized and methodical person - qualities that are a must for a special events coordinators. These traits help her when she is trying to solve a crime. In this book she is further motivated because the murder has occurred in her brother's newly opened brew pub, and her brother Derek is the number one suspect when his business partner is found dead. The book moves along at a pretty good clip, and the mystery is tricky. The characters, both main and and secondary, are realistically portrayed. I definitely want to read more in this series.
I am a life long mystery lover. Having read and re-read all of Agatha Christie's works many times I was particularly excited to receive a copy of this Laura DiSilverio book in a Goodreads giveaway. What a great idea for a cozy mystery series!
Amy-Faye and her friends share their love of mysteries through their book club the Readaholics. In choosing their next read they consider some great authors but it is Amy-Faye's shocking admission that she's never read a Christie that leads to the selection of "Murder on the Orient Express". At the moment Amy-Faye's brother is about to open a pub and the murder of his unpopular partner has life immitating art. How many enemies can one man have?
Amy-Faye and her friends feel like people you'd like to hang out with. What a bonus to join them in solving a mystery from the safety of my arm chair!
Pulls you right into the story with entertaining characters, an interesting theme and a well done murder plot! Amy-Faye Johnson and her fellow book club members, the Readaholics, investigate the murder of a slimy womanizer. The investment partner in Amy-Faye's brother's new pub is killed at the grand opening party. With her brother, Derek, as the prime suspect the family pitches in to run the pub while Amy-Faye and the Readaholics find the murderer. Greed, revenge, adultery and grief all play a part in this delightful mystery. The pacing is excellent and the murder plot is well thought out with plenty of clues and a surprising reveal. This is a great second entry in this new series and I can't wait for the next one.
