Thinking she is about to die, Phoebe Rivers says a mental goodbye to her children.
But Petrel, a stranger, helps her fend off and kill the assailants who savagely beat and rape her. Her disappearing hero turns out to be the long-dead proprietor of a speakeasy from the 1920s. She awakens alone and injured, but thinking she is a murderess, she tells no one about the attack, not even her husband, David. Her life quickly unravels, her children are in mortal danger, and David may not be who he seems.
Phoebe's mental reserves and maternal capabilities are tested as she uncovers chilling evidence about David and his new lover. Heartbreak ensues.
Motivated by grief, wracked by guilt, and hampered by her inability to explain the ghosts who appear to her, Phoebe tries desperately to protect her family as the past intersects with the present.
With this book, Kate Abbot does a fantastic job of bringing together the past and the present. The main character, Phoebe Rivers, is faced with a terrifying assault that leaves her fearing for her safety as well as her children's. After mentally saying a goodbye to her three children, she is saved by a stranger.
After thinking she has killed her rapists, Phoebe decides not to tell anyone what has happened to her and keeps it a secret, making excuses for how she got her bruises.
Things just keep getting worse for Phoebe when she finds out that her husband of 19 years is not who she thought he was and then he disappears with his lover. Phoebe starts to receive threats that make her start to fear for the lives of herself and her children.
Phoebe decides to take the children away for Spring Break to a lake where someone takes the family dog out whilst the family is sleeping and cuts her throat. Then one of her daughters is kidnapped and Phoebe has to find and get her family back on track with ghosts from the past. The ghosts help give Phoebe clues as to what is going on in her life and let her know who to trust. They also start to show themselves to her children throughout the book to help them get out of harmful situations.
When her husband is finally out of the picture, Phoebe thinks that the worse is over, apart from her loss. But things are far from over when his former lover wants revenge and will stop at nothing to ruin Phoebe's life further.
I am rating this book 3 out of 4 stars
This was an exceptional read and kept me gripped from the start. The thing I like best about this book is that it not only tells the story from the main characters perspective, but from others in the book too; including her husband, his lover, and the children. The book has compelling characters, an informative storyline and a flowing prose. It had me guessing throughout wondering what was going to happen to the family next.
There were a few parts in the book where the names of characters were mixed up and was quite confusing. For example; when her daughter goes missing, the author has mixed up the names of the mother and daughter. (naming Phoebe instead of Eileen)
I highly recommend this book for others to read if you are the sort of person who likes the supernatural and to be kept in suspense.

Running Through the Wormhole gripped me from the beginning and held on tight with its compelling characters, informative storyline and flowing prose. This book will have readers guessing during its foray into a shocking underside of humanity right on through the twists and turns in the lives of the heroine and her family. Running Through the Wormhole promises great things and does not disappoint. – Dora Leigh, Author of The Forgotten Gift
