I, Ramaseshan
This is the English translation of Aadhavan's Tamil novel En Peyar Ramaseshan' first published in Tamil in 1980.
Aadhavan's novel traces the emotional evolution of an adolescent growing into young adulthood. Infatuation, calf love, flirtations, love outside marriage, the yearnings and disappointments that lead to the growth and maturity of a young college student are the theme of the story.
As Ramaseshan is himself the narrator, the reader is privy to his innermost doubts and inferences, not to mention the shifting focus of his attentions.
Written with humour and insight, the novel also touches on the gaps between the generations trying to understand each other and the slow dawning of clues to complete this exercise successfully.
About the author
Aadhavan was the nom de plume of the late K S Sundaram (1942-87). In a brief span of time, he wrote two significant novels, a play and more than fifty short stories. A winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award winner—India’s highest literary honour—Aadhavan brought a refreshing new style to Tamil fiction. His books, mostly short stories, set in the urban milieu of his time, gave expression to the middle class of an entire generation.

On of the constantly occurring themes in Aadhavan's books is his quest for identity. Not his I mean but the protagonist's. This is the same theme I found in Kagitha Malargal - in fact I found a few similarities between that book and this - especially the lust that prevails in the primary male characters. I was not too impressed nor my thoughts were provoked due to this book unlike Kagitha Malargal.
Anyway, coming to this book, I felt that the author was able to distinctly bring out the goings-on in the mind of a college going boy though at times I felt that he had overloaded. How lust plays a role at that age and how some of his decisions, actions are influenced by that have been very well narrated by the author - especially the one with Mala's mother and how it was spontaneous and how he falls into her trap are noteworthy.
A few characters have not been formed well like Rao, for that matter Prema. At times I was felt suffocated with too much of analysis and had to reread paragraphs to understand an action, its reaction, an analysis and a meta-analysis that goes on top of those.
But overall a worthy read and not as thought-provoking as his other stories.

தானிருக்கும் உலகைவிட எதிரில் ஈர்ப்புள்ள உலகில் நுழைந்து அதில் தனக்கொரு இடத்தை அடைய செய்யும் முயற்சிகளில் ஒரு மாயபிம்பத்தை உருவகித்து அவ்வுலகில் இருக்கும் பாசாங்குகளுக்குத் தன்னைப் பழக்கப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளப் போராடுபவன் கொடுக்கும் பாவனைகளும், கையிலெடுத்துக் கொண்ட முகமூடிகளும் அவனின் தேடலைக் கண்டடைந்தான் என்பதை விடத் தன்னைப் பற்றிய சுயஅலசலில் வெற்றி பெற்றான் என்றே சொல்ல முடியும்.
பெண்களின் ஆளுமையில் ஊறித் திளைத்த குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்த ராமசேஷன் வளர வளர பெண்கள் தங்களின் கட்டுபாட்டை நிலைநிறுத்த காட்டும் பாவனைகளை அறவே வெறுத்து ஒதுக்குபவனுக்கு விடுதியில் தங்கி படிக்க வேண்டிய சூழல் குடும்பத்திலிருந்து தப்பிக்க வைத்துவிடுகிறது.
சராசரி மத்திய வர்க்கத்தில் வளர்ந்த ராமசேஷனுக்கு ராவ்வின் அறிமுகம் புதியதோர் உலகை திறக்கிறது. நாகரீக உச்சத்தில் வாழும் மேல்குடிகள் என்ற பெயரில் அவர்கள் அரங்கேற்றும் அனைத்திலும் தனக்கான இடத்தைப் பிடிக்கவும் அவர்கள் உலகில் தானும் தன்னிருப்பையும் காட்ட போலியான பிம்பத்தை உண்டாக்கியவன் அதிலிருக்கும் இடர்களை அறிந்த பிறகு அது நெருக்கும் போது தப்பிக்க வழி தேடுபவனுக்கு வழியும் தன்னாலே அமைந்து விடுகிறது.
இளமையில் கண்டறியத்துடிப்பதை ராவ்வின் தங்கையான மாலாவுடன் சேர்ந்து அறிந்த பிறகு அதில் சுவாரசியம் குறைந்து சலிப்பே எழுகிறது நாள்பட, இருவரும் அவர் அவர்களின் உண்மை முகத்தை மறைத்துப் போலியாகப் போட்டுக் கொள்ளும் முகமூடியை விரைவிலே அவிழ்த்து விடுகின்றனர் மாலாவிற்கு வேறு ஒருவனுடன் தொடர்பு உண்டாகிய பிறகு.
மாலாவுடன் விலகிய பிறகு கல்லூரியில் ஜூனியரான பிரேமாவிடம் பழக விருப்பம் கொண்டவன் அவளின் புத்திசாலி தனத்தால் பெரிதும் ஈர்க்கப்பட அதுவே வேறொரு முகமூடியை அவனை அணியச் செய்கிறது.உடம்பின் இச்சைகள் எண்ணங்களை ஆக்கிரமிக்க முற்படும் போது அதிலிருந்து வெளியேற இச்சைகளின் விருப்பத்திற்கே போக முற்படுபவனுக்கு அதில் வெற்றி பெற முடியவில்லை.
தன்னுடைய பாசாங்கெல்லாம் அர்த்தமில்லாமல் போகிறது என்ற எண்ணமே தன்னைவிட வயதில் மூத்தமாமியின் மீது கொண்ட அனுதாபத்தைக் கல்யாணம் வரை கொண்டு செல்வேன் என்று பிதற்றும் ராமசேஷனை அவளின் புத்தி நடைமுறைகளைச் சுட்டிகாட்டி பின்வாங்கச் செய்துவிடுகிறது.
பிறந்தது முதல் வீட்டு பெண்களின் கட்டுபாட்டிலே திளைத்துச் சுயத்தைத் தொலைத்த மனிதரான ராமசேஷனின் தந்தை வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியேறிய பிறகு மொத்த பொறுப்பும் இவனிடம் வந்து சேர்கிறது.
தன் தங்கை எவனோ ஒருவனுடன் பழகிக் கொண்டிருப்பதைப் பார்த்தவுடன் தன் இயல்புக்கும் தன்னுலகத்திற்கும் வந்து சேர்கிறான் ராமசேஷன் அதுவரை போட்ட முகமூடிகள் அனைத்தையும் கழட்டிவிட்டு.

1980களில் எழுதப்பட்ட புதினம் என்று நம்பமுடியாத அளவில் மிகவும் நவீனத்துவம் தென்படுகிறது.இராமசேஷன் என்ற நடுத்தர வர்க்க இளைஞனின் மனவியலை உளவியல் ரீதியாக அணுகியுள்ளார்.ஆதவனின் எழுத்துக்களில் இளமையும் மேட்டிமை இலக்கியத்தின் சாயல்கள் வெளிப்பட்டுக் கொண்டேஇருக்கின்ரன.

கல்லூரி நாவல்கள் அரிதான தமிழ்ச்சூழலில் ஒரு வித்தியாசமான படைப்பு. அறிவும் கவர்ச்சியும் சற்றே அதிகம் பெற்ற ராமசேஷனின் அனைத்தையும் ஏளனித்துத் திமிரும் இளமையையும், தோல்வியோடு வாழ்வைத் தழுவும் முதிர்தலையும் இந்நாவல் சித்தரிக்கிறது. வழக்கமான தமிழ் நாவல்களின் பேசுபொருட்கள், கதாபாத்திரங்கள், புரிதல்கள் ஆகியவற்றிலிருந்து என் பெயர் ராமசேஷன் விலகி நின்று, அறிவார்ந்த உளவியல் அலசலின் மூலமே வேகம் பெற்றுப் பாய்கிறது. சில சமங்களில் இந்த அம்சம் சோர்வூட்டினாலும் அதன் ambition குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. Patriarchy யால் ஆண்களின் சுதந்திரம் பலியாவதை கொஞ்சம் சூசகமாகவே உணர்த்துகிறது. பெண் வெறுப்பு அடிக்கடி வெளிப்பட்டாலும் பதின்ம வயதான ஒருவனின் கதையாக இருப்பதால் அது realistic ஆகப் படுகிறது. அனைவரையும் விமர்சனம் செய்யும் ராமசேஷனின் கோழைத்தனத்தை இறுதியில் நாவல் விமர்சனம் செய்வதன் மூலம் சமூகமாற்றத்தின் மேல் அவநம்பிக்கை கொள்ளச்செய்கிறதாக இருந்தாலும் அவனுடைய hypocrisy யை வெளிச்சமாக்குகிறது. இறுகிய சமூக சூழலில் ஆண்-பெண் உறவுகள், காதலில்லாத் திருமணங்கள், பாசாங்குகளுக்கும் உண்மைக்கும் உள்ள தூரம், தனிமனித சுதந்திரத்திற்கான ஏக்கம், கலைக்கும் கலைஞர்களுக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்பு என்று பல சரடுகள் கதையில் நீள்கின்றன. வாழ்வைப்பற்றிய எதிர்பார்ப்புகளும், இளமையில் கட்டும் மனக்கோட்டைகளும் இந்திய சமூகத்தில் கரைந்து போவதை உணர்த்தி நாவல் முடிகிறது.

ஒரு இளைஞனின் உளவியல் சிக்கல்களை இந்த அளவு தெளிவோடும் நேர்தியோடும் ஒருவர் 1980களில் எழுதிருக்கிறார் என்பது ஒரு பிரமிப்பை தருகிறது.

ஆதவன் புதினம் முழுவதும் ஒரு நடுத்தர வருமானக் குடும்பத்து இளைஞனின் எண்ண ஓட்டத்தை உன்னிப்பாகக் கவனித்து வரைந்துள்ளார். கல்லூரிக்குச் செல்லும்போது (குறிப்பாக விடுதியில் தங்குகையில்) ஏற்படும் விடுபாட���டுணர்வு, "வயசுக் கோளாறு", கொஞ்சம் மேட்டிமை நூல்களைப் படித்து வரும் செருக்கு, தொடர்ந்து தன்னையும் பிறரையும் உளவியல்நோக்கில் அலசுவது எனத் தேர்ந்து செதுக்கிய கதைமாந்தன், இராமசேஷன். மற்ற கதைமாந்தர்களை அத்தனை நுணுக்கமாக வடிக்கவில்லை. ஒரு சிலரை வேண்டுமென்றே மாறுபட்ட சூழல் பாத்திரங்களாகக் காட்டி உண்மைக்கதையிலிருந்து திசைதிருப்புவது போலிருந்தது. இருந்தாலும் முதல் பாத்திரத்தின் நுணுக்கமே இந்நூலின் சிறப்பு.
மொழிநடை தொடர்ந்து உறுத்திக் கொண்டு எனக்குச் சற்றும் பிடிக்கவில்லை. மிகையான ஆங்கில வடமொழிச் சொற்களின் கலப்பைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லவில்லை. அது ஒருவேளை கதை நடந்த காலத்துப் பயன்பாடாக இருக்கலாம், அல்லது இராமசேஷனின் வட்டத்தின் மொழியாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால், சொல்வரிசை முதற்கொண்டு ஆங்கிலத்தைப் பற்றியிருப்பது வெள்ளிடை மலை. பல இடங்களில் இதை இவர் ஆங்கிலத்திலேயே எழுதியிருக்கலாமே என்று தோன்றச் செய்தது. சுருங்கச் சொன்னால் மொழிநடை கோபி மஞ்சுரியன். இந்திய காரசார உணவு எனக்குப் பிடிக்குமென்பதால் கோபி மஞ்சுரியனை ஏற்க முடிகிறது. ஆனால், ஒரு சீனாக்காரரிடம் போய் அது சீன உணவு என்றால் ஏற்பாரா? அதுபோலத்தான் இந்நூலின் நடையைத் தமிழ்நடையாகக் கொள்வதும். ஆனால் படிக்கும்போது நிறைய உள்நோக்கிய எண்ணங்கள் ஏற்படுவதால் மொழிநடை தடையாக இல்லை.

தன் சுயத்தின் மீது பெரிதாக நம்பிக்கையோ , அபிமானமோ இல்லாமல் குறை கண்டுபிடிக்கும் புத்தியுடன் டெல்லியை சுத்தி வரும் ஒரு கல்லூரி மாணவனின் MIND VOICE தான் இந்த நாவல் . தன்னை அறிவுஜீவி என்றும் சமுதாயத்துக்கு கட்டுப்படாதவனாக தன்னை நினைத்து கொண்டு வாழும் சாதாரண இளைஞனின் எண்ண ஓட்டங்கள் இது . சாதாரண மனிதனுக்கு தோன்றும் உணர்வுகள் , எண்ணங்கள் மேல் ஒரு காகித கிரீடம் வைத்தால் எப்படி இருக்குமோ அப்படி தான் இந்த ராமசேஷனின் எண்ண ஓட்டங்கள் இருக்கும் . ஆசிரியர் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் ராமசேஷன் போல் எண்ண ஓட்டம்கொண்டவர்கள் மிக அரிதாக இருந்திருப்பர் . அதனாலேயே ராமசேஷனை தன் நாவலின் முதன்மை கதாபாத்திரமாக்கி காவியமாக்கியிருக்கிறார் . ஆனால் இன்று வீதிக்கு ஒரு ராமசேஷன் இருக்கிறான் . ஆசிரியரின் தொலைநோக்கு பார்வையை , அதுவும் மனிதர்களின் மனங்களை படிக்கும் வித்தையை கண்டிப்பாக பாராட்டியே ஆகா வேண்டும் . ஒரு தனித்துவமான கதை எழுதும் திறன் கொண்டவர்களின் முதல் படைப்பை படிக்கும் பொது ஏற்படும் அனுபவம் அடுத்தடுத்த படைப்புகளில் சலிக்க ஆரம்பித்து விடும் . காகித மலர்கள் படித்து விட்டு 5 நட்சத்திர ரேட்டிங் கொடுத்த நான் இதற்கு நான்கு நட்சத்திர ரேட்டிங் கொடுக்க கூட பேரும் யோசனையாக தான் இருந்தது . நான் கொடுக்கும் ரேடிங் என்பது என் தனிப்பட்ட விருப்பம் தான் . ஆதவனை ரேட் செய்யுமளவு நீ அறிவாளியா என்று சண்டைக்கு வராதீர்கள் . எனக்கு வேறு வேலை இருக்கிறது .

One of fabulous novels, i have ever read. Astounding writing style and characterization. It deserves Nobel prize for literature. Brilliant author.

This was a rather fun read. It reminded me of my late teens and early twenties when I used to chase girls and it was refreshing reading the dynamic that boys and girls have at that age, during college.

The first edition of this book seems to be written in 1980 , still relevant and unabashed in slamming the ways of pseudo intellectuals , phonies, attention whores ( including the protagonist/author/reader ) right on their face . Reminded me a lot of The Catcher in the Rye and for some reason loved it even more.
