Not too shabby.

description

Been looking forward to this since I saw the first floppy, so I think I may have had my expectations set too high. This was simply alright, and by that I mean it was a decent intro for Absolute Catwoman. And I'm definitely coming back for the next issue.

description

Skinny gist is that Selina is (apparently) planning to retire from her life of high-stakes thievery, but before she can skedaddle to her island, an old frenemy shows up and asks for help, and then a group of CopyCats tries to take her out.

description

Looks like the setup for a good dive into Selina's mysterious split from Bruce and a look at her rise to the top of the stealing-shit food chain.

Some chick dressed as the old cat woman breaks into 25-year-old Celina Kyle’s penthouse in London during her birthday. Celina(the actual Catwoman) suits up and takes her the fuck out, but then realizes there’s more of them. After fighting and beating them all up, they run and set off an explosive that destroys Celina’s penthouse.

Earlier that day, we see Selina in her Cat Cave full of cool ass shit. She remembers her childhood in Gotham, going from one shitty foster home to the next, and a sentimental postcard she still has, from her biological family in Cuba. She visits a new villa in Sicily, which she purchased in an attempt to finally quit stealing and start a normal life, but upon returning to London, she notices an intruder in her penthouse.

It’s her old childhood friend and former fellow thief from Gotham, Holly, who is in some trouble, and trying to get Celina to do a job with her. Celina refuses, so Holly just leaves, and gives her a cake for her birthday. Celina finds a mysterious blue orb inside the cake, and that’s when women dressed in what looks like Celina’s old suit start breaking into the Penthouse, which brings us back to the present(post-penthouse explosion).

The perps leave on bikes, and Celina notices they’ve taken the blue orb and kidnapped Holly, so a motorcycle chase ensues. Selina follows them on her cold AF Hell Cat bike that turns into a bi-pedal cat mech. She catches up with the perp that has Holly, and they fight, but surprisingly, this chick is a match for Celina. The perp manages to knock Celina off her bike and escapes with holly, but Celina had stolen the blue orb back from her during the fight. The perp is then later revealed to be Cassandra Cane.

Grayson and Snyder deliver one of the strongest Absolute debuts yet. This version of Selina is globe-trotting, high-tech, and completely self-made. She’s built the life she always wanted and she’s ready to walk away from it all. Then someone from her past shows up and blows everything apart. What works best is how the flashbacks are woven in, feeling additive rather than disruptive and giving real emotional context to who Selina is right now and how she got here. Grayson gives her genuine depth and vulnerability beneath all the confidence and competence, and the mystery builds beautifully toward a final page reveal that had me immediately wanting issue two. Bengal’s art is the standout throughout, kinetic, stylish and emotionally expressive. The fact that this went back to press for a second printing before it even officially released tells you everything you need to know about the buzz around this one. Well deserved. 4.5⭐️

Such a great issue! Motorbike to apex mode, fighting on a beam going a 100 miles an hour, this issue wasted no time! I love how the Absolute comics intertwine everyone in a way where it's not expected but makes sense. I love that this version of Selina is high-tech, and not just some sexy vixen who's Batman's on and off counterpart.

Sometimes a story just pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Che’s prose let us know in great detail about Selina’s life, but it never felt preachy and gave us just enough story to keep us going. The ending was a great twist.

I mean, it's decent. But it feels safe. By-the-numbers. Snyder can be a renegade when he wants to be, but everything about this issue is ordinary. Expected. Dull.

The nouveau kinetic style of Daniel Warren Johnsonesque inking doesn't have the effect it did with giant Transformers-y robots, and only serves to make tail-whips, sword arcs, and general comics-action movements (falling, punching, flying, motorcycling) indistinguishable and frustrating to read.

3-stars might be generous. [EDIT: Yeah, it was. Adjusted.]

Great start!! The art and the way the action flows is definitely a highlight of this book, and that ending reveal?! Oooh, I can’t wait for more! I don’t know how the hell Selina got all of this cool gear and honestly I don’t need to know, she has clearly made quite a name for herself in the business of robbing people blind but we now find her in a stage in her life where she is ready to hang up the tail and cowl and put it behind her while she is ahead. It’s a safe bet, but life rarely works out that way, does it? The issue actually opens on a hilarious fake out, as Selina talks about the thrill of picking a target out and knowing you’re the best and only one who can get this insanely expensive thing. All of this is over a scene where someone in a cat suit very similar to mainline Catwoman is sneaking into an apartment and cracking a safe, only for Selina to reveal that isn’t her as the shadow of absolute Catwoman surrounds the cat burglar as she opens fire from her tail filled with tranquilizer rounds to take the would be burglar down. Turns out her suit helmet is so high tech that it features a system capable of scanning targets, she isn’t able to get anything off of the thief but she is immediately made aware of the other intruders right behind her carrying a lot deadlier rounds that tranq darts. They are all wearing cat suits, which Selina mentions seems like an old memory from her days in a crew known as the calicos…they are clearly here to make a point and Selina is happy to play. They can trash her place as much as they want, she doesn’t care about anything here other than an old postcard they will never find. Selina uses the environment to her advantage in a beautifully flowing scene as she swings throughout the apartment, kicking back and tranquilizing each of the intruders. Their suits are just a costume with a whip and theater ears…her suit is all tactical. Head to toe Kevlar, carbon steel tail, her left ear is a portable EMP, and her right ear is a secret, lol. As the intruders begin to flee Selina thinks she has won…until she hears the beeping and smells the Semtex from the bomb they left behind. And now Selina is getting blasted out of her apartment…what a happy birthday.

To find out how we got to this point we have to go back to that morning as Selina got her coffee and took a call from a man named Dante Calderone who Selina works with to arrange a visit to her new villa that day. She is ready to retreat to the villa and close this chapter on her life. She takes an elevator down to what is known as the cat cave, but sees like a museum now filled with super expensive tech…some of which she never even used, like a motorcycle called the Wildcat. But it’s served its purpose, she is done, no looking back. On that note, let’s go back to Gotham city 12 years ago where we find Selina in the midst of an abusive foster care system where she slips away anything she can to afford her way out. She came here from Cuba when she was a bag and doesn’t remember much other then the feeling of weightlessness a the heartbeat if the person who held her with their face blotted out by the sun. The postcard she mentioned earlier is the only thing she has from home, “it shows a palisade in the sierra maestra mountain range a thousand feet above the ocean. At the cliff’s edge is a woman dressed in white.” That day Selina made the trip from London to Madonie, Sicily in a matter of hours (showing her wealth even more) as she lands on her private helipad at her private villa with a hybrid aged fort and modern house attached. Legit the coolest house design ever, and it’s all hers. She doesn’t even want staff here, she just wants the tour from Dante and then the moment he leaves he forgets it. As they step outside Dante does reveal one issue, poring across a small pond stands a jaguar which has already mauled two of Dante’s men who got close. He offers to hire a professional to get rid of it, but Selina denies the request as it’s clear she just wants to be left alone. Those two will work great together.

Selina returns to her London apartment as she pours a drink as an end to her 25th birthday, but the moment she takes a drink she hears a door creak open as she grabs a kitchen knife and throws it towards the direction of the intruder. The knife goes right into a red velvet cake being held by Holly! What’s up Holly! Holly used all the tricks “Se” taught her to get in, but of course it’s not just to celebrate Selina’s birthday as Se walks over and parts her hair to find one of Holly’s eyes bruised. Going back 10 years we learn the moment Selina and Holly met. Selina was sitting on a roof with her cats, and Holly was running away from the cops with a cake in hand after trying to smuggle it in to her mom as it contains a 3D printed screwdriver for her to use. The cops are chasing after Holly, partially because she still has one of their handcuffs on her hand, and Selina is nice enough to point her to a hole in the nearby wall where Holly can hide. Selina is able to talk the cops away and it seems the two became friends the moment Selina’s cat “King Rupert” loved up to Holly. They were both loners and thief’s and for a while Selina thought she didn’t have to be alone, but somewhere down the line Selina decided to work alone and it seems a huge part of that is due to a job gone bad with Holly. Which makes me even worse that Holly is here ask Selina to join her on another job. Holly hands over the cake and walks out, with Selina asking in the final moment if she will be okay and if she can get out of whatever this is. Holly tells Se not to loose any sleep over her, “you know I always land on my feet.” The puns, lol. Selina mentions that Holly always lives the thrill, which is why things with her old crew, the calicos, blew up as she never believed they could get caught until it all came crashing down.

But a cake with Holly is never just a cake, and as Selina opens it she find a strange blue ball inside of it. But that’s also the moment the intruders from the start of the issue break in as Selina slips away to put on her own cat suit. Which brings us back to the moment she is blasted out of her apartment, as she is too late to deploy the carbon fiber net from her suit and ends up with a dislocated shoulder and a broken ankle. But as her apartment burns this is only the start, at the very least it seems she will actually get to use the Wildcat bike. Using her Jonsey system she identifiers the assailants she is chasing after in her super sleek bike, prompting her visor to pop up predator cat eyes lol. The system identifies seven of them rushing away on bikes of their own, with Holly being the 7th and tied up on the back of one of the bikes. Alongside Holly, Selina scanning can see that the mysterious leader also snatched Holly’s blue pearly birthday gift. But whatever it is it’s with killing for as the leader launches explosives from their bike to cause a pile up solely to slow Selina down. But it doesn’t in the slightest as the Wildcat is a special bike, capable of switching in moments to an all terrain four legged beast in something called apex mode. This is something straight out of power rangers and I love it. Selina literally leaps over the wreckage in the road as she switches back into a bike to chase after them. But the moment she gets close to Holly, the driver swings the bike around while maintaining speed to then their two bikes into a 100 mph balance beam. It’s claws vs swords now as the two leap around each other, Selina is immediately caught off guard by how hard this woman is fighting. Waylon may have taught Selina street fighting, but she studied her own grab bag of styles to remain unpredictable…and this fighter is able to counter every one of her moves. So Selina decides to shift focus, she takes a hit and even though Holly is captured Selina is able to slip in and steal the precious little pearl they stole from her. As the issue comes to an end we see the warehouse Holly is taken to as we get the huge reveal of the assailant Selina was fighting being Cassandra Cain!! WOOHOO!! I’m just glad that Holly is still alive, but yeah Selina had no chance in hell of actually winning that fight.

Smash, I mean smash, I mean...

Okay jokes aside, yes Selina is beautiful, but this version of Catwoman is exactly what I want from every project going forward. When she's more methodical and planned out than Bruce, it adds such an interesting dicotomy to her entire demeanor as a femme fatale. The story of Catwoman at it's core is what women do when they're desperate to survive, it's feminine poverty, and this story explores that through the notion of homeless cats paralelling the lives that homeless girls find and reconnect with both as children forced to survive any means necessary and as adults now facing the ramifications of all the horrific things they've done to get where they are. If you get out and live comfortably, how do you cope? If you don't, are you stuck as a kid trying to survive for eternity? These are questions Absolute Catwoman asks under this really fun story that plays with timeline, showing this lens through her experience as a Cuban foster kid sent to Gotham, and honestly it's brilliant because it's entirely seperated from Bruce which is an excellent choice to let her get established on her own. Yes, I too love their romance when written well and I have no doubt it'll be great in the future, but she needs to be established on her own. God, I read this a few days ago but it's really stuck in my mind. The visuals, god the visuals, ya the characters are stunning to look at, Absolute aesthetics are INSANE how do you come up with all that? But also just the art style in general is gorgious and brings to much life to this story and adds so much storytelling. There is so much potential for this series and god it was worth the wait. I'm really picky when it comes to Catwoman adaptions, sorry but with some of the BTAS visuals for her I always just imagine her apartment smells like catlitter and find some of the quips pretty cringe, but this made me want to do a deep dive into her character like never before. Dare I say, this is my new favorite in the Absolute Universe lineup, which is insanely high praise considering how amazing the rest of the series has been so far.

This one feels like the least imaginative/bold of the Absolute books and besides the very strong art, there wasn't much about the story that felt like a major change. The copycats is probably the most intriguing new take and even that feels a bit like how the Absolute Robins are being handled.

Maybe things will improve with the next issue but so far it's the art saving the book. Which is very good and works as a complement to the style established in Absolute Batman. The "Wild cat" vehicle is great. Although I do think the fish bowl mask is slightly distracting in that I keep thinking it's related to the Abs Black mask tech (maybe it is?).

The other thing that may be affecting my enjoyment a little is that I'm really enjoying the regular Catwoman title at the moment and this is maybe why I was hoping for a more skewed take on the character to help differentiate it. This won't be an issue for people not following the regular title - although at this early stage I'd recommend the regular Catwoman.

Overall impression = 3/5
Writing = 3/5
Art = 4/5

Will I read the next issue? yes

Wait for the trade collection? If it's a genuine miniseries, then one could probably wait for the trade given it seems to be isolated from the monthly Ab batman series.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? Sort of. Unless it's written as if we've known the character for a long time?

Will I read previous issues I'm thinking I need to read volume 2 of Absolute Batman?

I'll be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this issue. That is not necessarily surprising for an Absolute title, but this was a lot of fun. I am not usually the biggest Catwoman fan because I often feel that many of her stories cover similar ground, and there is only so much that can be done with the character. However, the direction this series appears to be taking is genuinely exciting.
I really enjoyed this version of Selina and want to learn more about how she became Catwoman and acquired all of the wealth and technology she is showcasing. It feels like this interpretation is an interesting blend of the mainline versions of both Batman and Catwoman. The technology she uses is creative, entertaining, and adds a unique flavor to the character. I definitely want to see more of it.
The twist at the end, along with the reveal of another Absolute character, made the issue even more exciting and left me eager to see what comes next. I cannot wait to pick up the next issue.

ABSOLUTE CATWOMAN COME THROUGH!

This introductory issue of Catwoman into the absolute universe was badass from beginning to end. Selina's intro was written with depth and just the right amount of detail. Fluctuating between modern day and an impending retirement and past life experiences as a minor and a foster care kid (in and out) it was all just so freaking good!

Definitely add Catwoman to my top absolute list. While they're all good in their own right, I believe my top three as of today are Absolute Wonder Woman, Absolute Martian Manhunter, and Absolute Green Lantern, with Catwoman high on the list of honorable mention (warning this list fluctuates lol).Holly reentering the scene after Selina has parted ways with the Calicos creates an interesting challenge for Selina who is now in it with Cassandra Cain. Turn the mic up all the way! It's about to GET LOUD!

Really good start to this miniseries so far. I loved the back and forth between the past and present with her and Holly, as well as the look of the Calicos being the classic Catwoman costume. Really interested to see where this goes with Absolute Cassandra Cain being revealed and the weird orb / pearl thing Selina stole back. Absolutely loved the writing in this, also the wildcat is so cool and I love the part where she uses it to run over the cars. Really hoping we get to see the lore of how she gets her mask 🙏

I like the setup of a sort of globetrotting spy thriller but there were a few too many loose ends that didn’t feel intriguing. Do we know how Selina became super wealthy, or did I miss that somewhere in Absolute Batman? I would have liked a bit more of a jumping off point from that book but I assume that will come in time. The action sequences are thrilling though - great art and great ideas for tech.

its not... *bad* but it felt so much more generic compared to the other absolute series ive read? the contempt for her old outfit/character felt mean, i dunno. i liked holly. but i hated this... all this tech? ok, i get it, batman doesn't have it, so she does, i guess? but all that resulted in was, well, capeshit.

and im not a fan of capeshit :/

Really good. It was surprisingly very good. Interesting story with great action scenes. The Absolute really pairs well with Catwoman. I am really digging this version of Selina Kyle. I hope more characters get introduced in this universe. They make for some really interesting reads.

I have a wishy-washy relationship with Catwoman. I dove into this with, I wouldn't say high expectations, but certain expectations seeing that Selina would be Afro-Cuban and also written by a black woman...I can say I'm sort of intrigued by the story. But I do have to ask...is everyone Tony Stark now?

People need to stop meat riding Absolute comics…seriously. They’re not that good.

We get a solid foundation for Catwoman this issue. Fighting off a copycat gang of normal ‘catwomen’ who she used to team up with for crime. We also see she lives in a large penthouse and an old friend Holly visits Now, Selina seems to be a tech thief with a motorcycle that can turn into a cat….

Wtf.
