Dinah Geof-Craigs, the metahuman known as Dynamistress, has made the big leagues, having joined The Gatekeepers, one of the most respected super-teams in the nation. She’s made the cover of Supers magazine, even being featured as “Super of the Month,” fulfilling a lifelong dream. She even has her own fan club! Her life is one of new adventures, new friends, and new loves.

But is she ready for any of it?

Weighing heavily is her guilt over her actions during “the Nevada Incident,” as the media refers to the revealed government Project Echo — a project that isn’t quite finished. Meanwhile, the Bay Area is struck by a deadly disease spread in an unbelievable fashion, and Dyna finds her own abilities standing in the way of a cure.

Throughout it all, she is faced with hostage situations, a meta who explodes uncontrollably, a mysterious stalker, and the question of whether she’s really doing the right thing.

Usual disclaimers apply: I know the author, we RPed together in City of Heroes, Nexus is very loosely based on my Virtue character Vicky, aka HeatBurn.

And, as for the first book, I had to dock two stars -- while the second book wasn't supposed to be a biography as much as the first one, it was written as one, and thus lost a lot of the impact in the stories and events. I couldn't connect to the tragedy of OtherDyna because exactly of how it was written, so I was totally unmoved by it. This book ended up being an accidental hybrid, a mix between a novel and a biography and failed at both.

And then there was the cramming of the many things together: the return of the Others, the abduction of Vicky, the Stalker... each of them deserved to be expanded, but in the way they were presented, they felt...flat.

And Vicky and Dyna's romance... sadly felt off. Drinking games jokes aside, I liked all of the romances Dyna developed, but her and Vicky just didn't... click as the previous ones.

Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive because this Vicky wasn't as much like mine, meh.

But the shift in character perspectives and first-person narrators was jarring because there was no warning whose mind we were in, and took me often several pages to figure out who I was reading. I would have prefer this to have had a name to identify the narrator and make it third person to quickly identify that Dyna wasn't speaking.

Still, it had some amazingly uncomfortable moments (Vicky's ahem... interaction with her father, the Stalker endgame, etc) and I loved reading them.

I will definitely pick up the next book!

"Our desires always disappoint us," wrote author Francois de La Rochefoucauld sometime during the 17th century. "For though we meet with something that gives us satisfaction, yet it never thoroughly answers our expectations." In other words, be careful what you ask for. It may come true.
