This story is the prequel for the book Web of Vows and Vengeance. We are introduced to Rose and her sister Kay in the beginning. This is a short read but packed full of punch. Rose and Kay are living in the slums, trying their best to survive. Rose feels responsible and protective of her younger sister. She will do anything to give Kay a better life. The sad part of the story is they once lived a life of luxury. However, the King and his son destroyed their lives. Their magic was taken away. Everything changed very quickly for them. Rose does not want her sister to see the evil out in the real world. She agrees to help someone in exchange for that person securing a job for Kay in a respectful household. The help Rose agrees to is very dangerous. As I was reading the pages, I could feel Rose's desperation to try to save her sister from a horrible fate. What she endures is heartbreaking. This book is a very emotional story.
The ending leaves me wanting the next book right now. It can't get here soon enough. I definitely recommend reading this book ASAP. You won't be disappointed.

While this is not required to read a web of vows and vengeance, I do highly recommend it. This gives Rose’s backstory on why she is so desperate to get out of the city slums. It gives you such a deeper understanding of roses character and everything she has gone through and and being forced to sacrifice because of the prince’s lie. It also gives the story about her and her “friend” that she talks about at the beginning of web of vows and vengeance that helps her watch out for her sister in the novel. There is a ton of background information in a very short novella. I love this and can’t imagine having read the novel without this one.

This was a great intro into the story of rose and the journey she will take in the first book. This story gives more about what Rose's life looks like in the slums and what she is willing to do to not only protect her sister but herself to. It was a quick, fast paced read with a bit of world building. You see the before book 1 life, pieces you don't fully see in the first book. There is also more memories about her parents as well in this quick prequel story. It was also action packed with high stakes situations that Rose must conquer to protect what she loves and ensure a future for her sister. What wouldn't Rose do for her sister?

This phenomenal prequel dives into how it all began, tracing Rose’s journey and the moments that ultimately shape who she becomes. You’ll figure out just how far Rose will go for her sister. Relive memories of her parents. Gain a better understanding of why Rose will go to the lengths she is willing to, for survival. Read this before you start book one or if you’ve already read book one it’s a great way to go back and see all the things that peaked your curiosity from the first book. This is such a great addition to the series—I’m already counting down the days until the next book!

3.5*. Just a short novella to provide some backstory. Not enough happens for it to be a separate book.
