Thrown together by this bombshell discovery, Val and Bianca are plunged into a mystery that exposes the dark history of their communities and the dangerous forces determined to keep those secrets buried…

This starts off pretty well, flicking between two meetings, one at the homeowners' association of a repressively upright community, and one at the commune the other side of the hill. What I loved was that both were really annoying, which showed an awareness of the truth people on all sides tend not to acknowledge: even meetings of people with whom you broadly agree are an arseache, because they're still meetings, and people. And then [end of issue 1 spoiler] someone at each end finds a secret tunnel between the two rival areas, and someone who's been shot down there, and was living a double life in both. First problem: the art is not at a level where there's much chance of the reader having registered this resemblance as significant – though it's still better on this than one panel with what I think might be a dressing gown with a bikini pattern on the outside, but at which I spent a good couple of minutes gazing, baffled, unable to make any of the options quite line up with what the page shows. More critically, the mystery basically evaporates as the comic turns into an ACAB primer in which [bigger spoiler] the culprit you'd guess as soon as the attack is revealed turns out to be exactly the one who did it. It's not as if you can't do a mystery in which the obvious person is guilty, but it helps to still have a little misdirection along the way, instead of just political talking points making the plot entirely linear.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Neighborhood Watch!

This graphic novel was truly delightful. With so many twists and turns and representation, it was a really enjoyable ride! I had characters I was rooting for. I had characters I immediately was NOT rooting for. I had moments that made me gasp.

That was incredibly well done while still painting a specific character in a specific light. You have my applause.

Neighborhood Watch was a rather underwhelming read for me. I absolutely loved the artwork, and honestly, that was probably the only thing I genuinely enjoyed about this graphic novel. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the story or the dialogue, neither of which managed to capture my interest.

It also took me quite a while to realise that the blacked-out sections in the speech bubbles were most likely censoring a trans character's deadname.

As for the whole police brutality angle, I understand the social commentary, especially considering the situation in the US. However, I don't believe every person who chooses this profession is automatically an asshole. And apparently, we have a 3/3 situation here. A little too one-dimensional for my taste.

Overall, beautiful artwork, forgettable story. I don't think I'll be picking up anything else by Sarah Gailey.

As for the graphic novel/illustration element of this, ABSOLUTELY stunning artwork! Utterly incredible, the character work is gorgeous, the style seems to really fit the tense, kind of rugged sense of the story given the mystery and tension. I also think the color palette really fit, as well, with the sort of muted hues/shades. It all just came together really well, fit the story perfectly, and brought it to visual life perfectly!

As for the story and it's execution as a graphic novel, I did quite enjoy it, and I loved the queer representation! The main rep in here is a sapphic romance and also a trans character, and the latter's dead name is blocked in the dialogue bubbles, which I thought was a meaningful detail!

I enjoyed the story quite a bit; the mystery was intriguing, and I found myself intrigued in wanting to know the why behind the double life and the two communities. The story itself has a couple things to say, but they never get too convoluted. There are definitely emotional plotlines between speaking to the pain and challenges surrounding abuse, secrets, and queer experiences. Following that family line in the story did have my attention, and I feel like those characters (not wanting to give spoilers) are the ones I got to know the most throughout the story, and I think that's why I cared about those two FMCs the most, and it was the element of the plot that I was most invested in.

The story also speaks to the whole community/neighborhood element referenced in the title. Separated by a mountain, Willow Haven and Open Arms are the opposite of each other in many ways, and there's a sort of erroneous enmity between them based on pretty shaky prejudice. That said, as the story unfolds, resolution to the mysteries comes, and the characters take matters into their own hands by the end, you are left with the reality that we're all just... here. And a lot of times, we don't have the full picture of each other, we're all just getting by, and we can work together even if the ways we live are different. As a whole, just a good basic theme following an arc of prejudice and separation to community. The ending was feel good, and I liked it!

Despite this being a graphic novel with limited text, I feel like it could've done more. I found myself wanting to get to know some of the main characters more, and by the end I feel like I still had some questions and would have appreciated a bit more clarity. My major drawback, though, was just that the very end felt pretty abrupt. It gives an obvious ending act and indication as to the thematic intention, but I wanted a "what next" addition to the story. I think adding one more chapter/issue would've made a bigger impact for me; did the acts of characters at the end truly amount to change, and was it beneficial, at that? Just getting to know some more of the "after."

Overall, a good, quick story with some basic thematic messages, but I think the illustrations truly take the cake with this one!

Thanks to NetGalley and BOOM! Studios for the early copy to voluntarily review; all opinions are my own.

This is my first experience with the work of Sarah Gailey and I loved it.

First, since this is a graphic novel, we have to talk about the artwork and coloring. The colors just pop off the page. The artwork is gorgeous. It was one of those things where I would soak in the artwork and then go back and read the dialogue. Great job from illustrator Haining.

Story wise, this was well done. Gailey has written a story of two different communities that do not have the best view of the other only to find out they have one key connection. This leads to a bit of a mystery that was just as good as anything on the NY Times Bestseller List. All of this leads to an explosive ending.

Very beautiful art with some well designed and diverse characters. Unfortunately, I found the story a bit rushed and the back and forth between point of views was confusing. I think I expected a little more out of the plot, it ended up a bit one dimensional and while I can appreciate the sentiment, it was just a little too on the nose for me and very obvious as to who was going to be the antagonist.

Thank you to Sarah Gailey and BOOM! Studios for providing me with this complimentary eARC for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own. It’s due to be released on February 23, 2027!

I grabbed this based off the cover alone as someone who begrudgingly lives in an HOA community… and then I realized this is the author of “Just Like Home”, “The Echo Wife”, and “When We Were Magic” and got even more excited to read this! I immediately dove into the chaotic community of Willow Haven and I was not disappointed!

Haining did an amazing job illustrating this. I loved the imagery and the colors told a story all on their own. I have a tendency to look at the pictures as I read the text blurb on them, one box at a time. But with this graphic novel, I found my eyes drawn to the pictures first and foremost. The pictures were visceral, the colors were vibrant and inviting. (So many details– tattoos, port-wine stains, wisps of hair, paneled walls, etc.) I was looking at everything on the page and absorbing it before going and reading the adjoining text.

The story itself was mesmerizing and gritty. It follows various neighbors simultaneously, working through their own issues that ultimately weave together into one storyline. The mystery starts IMMEDIATELY with someone bleeding out, and I needed to know how we got there. We have all those fun neighborly bonding moments… like espionage, backstabbing, adultery, domestic violence, and attempted murder. Very casual; much drama-free (said no one, ever). This was like Desperate Housewives, without the actual housewives (despite a predominantly female cast) but all the desperation– and I say that lovingly. I loved all the representation (nationalities, sexualities, genders, etc) going on here– and the redacting of deadnames was a brilliant touch. I had a great time reading all 5 installments/chapters of this and I could have kept going if given more.

Thank you so much BOOM Studios and Netgalley for this ARC!
3.5 rounded down though I can see why many rate this higher. It's a fine mystery with some light thriller elements. I do think the cop thing is a bit heavy-handed but it makes sense for the story.
Boom Studios bagged Haining, whose art I adored in Spirit World, so I was itching to read this the moment I saw it on Netgalley. Haining's art remains good though she has a lot less to work with here imo. Spirit World had oodles of color and dynamic fights. This is a bit more plain due to it being a mystery thriller.
Speaking of that mystery thriller, it's a nice one. It’s part murder mystery and part who is this person I thought I knew. Sarah Gailey is a novelist and I think in part this feels like a novella concept turned graphic novel. The story is fine. Sarah Gailey is one of those thriller authors who get comics deals every so often a la Alex Segura or Brad Meltzer. These tend not to be my favorite thing but a nice change of pace. Her writings tend to be a bit more “cozier” mystery than the other two. It's the same here with a woman having a double life. One in a super suburban area and the other in a commune. Throughout the story you end up seeing how these intersect and how those in power (corporations and police) have caused them to separate while hurting people on both sides.
I love the paneling touch where the suburbs have rigid blue panels and the commune has rounded orange panels. It's on the nose as a way to show their contrast but still fun and I eat it up.

thank you netgalley for the arc in exchange for review!

this graphic novel made for a super quick but super interesting read! the premise is pretty unique to anything ive read before, especially when it comes to the split-perspective format in which its depicted (mainly for the first part of the novel).

id be remiss if i didnt take the time to call out the art style by haining as well. the character design is evocative of classic 1950s pop art, contributing to the idyllic, perfect-on-the-surface veneers of both willow haven and open arms.

while this book feels like the perfect length for a graphic novel, i selfishly wish we as readers had the luxury of learning more about each individual character's backgrounds. but who knows--maybe this won't be the last we see of these women, and if it isn't, i'll be ready and eager to revisit their stories!

Absolutely beautiful artwork. Stunning. I loved the multiple POV and the split pages to tell the story. The characters look and personalities matched perfectly. I can see why the illustrator, Haining, is so revered. I’m excited I got to see this comic completed and in one place. I’m now addicted to looking fully into other work Haining has done. DC! Star Wars, Gotham City Sirens, very impressive and I can’t wait to devour more!

Blaming cops for violence, bigotry and hate has been done. Not my jam at all and it feels like an excuse to cause divide. The antagonist could have been any other profession, or none at all, and the story still could have been written the exact same.

Thank you NetGalley for the read! This was such a fun storyline and incredible illustration!

The neighborhood has a secret! A woman disappears, hidden tunnels, corrupt authorities and the ladies of the watch determined to resolve this mess.

Jill disappears, from two communities close to each other, her friends set up to find her, and what they discover is that Jill has been leading a double life. Her body was found in a hidden chamber that connects both neighborhoods. The women of the Neighborhood Watch jump into action, to keep everyone safe and bring the culprits to justice even if they have to take it into their own hands.

Great art, plot was interesting and entertaining. Love the strong female characters all bringing a personal style to the story that combined really well. Bravo for that ending!

What a fun little graphic novel! The story was engaging and immediately pulled you in. There's something about community gatherings (HOA, neighborhood watch, etc.) that just scream corruption and good times. Not that, that's what this was, but it was a fun way to dive in.

Both the writing and the artwork were fantastic. Sarah Gailey and Haining did a great job! The plot was a little predictable, but it was still fun reading it and the pace was so fast that it kept you moving. I enjoyed this book, especially the queer representation, and would recommend to all.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author & illustrator for an eARC.

Neighborhood Watch was a very quick read with beautiful art throughout the graphic novel.

We start with an HOA meeting and where they assign pairs of people to walk the neighborhood each night. When Bianca goes out for her turn, she finds that her partner Jill is nowhere to be found.

Eventually a body is found between two homes, and the mysteries start to unfold as to what exactly is going on.

Only thing I would change is exploring the characters a bit more.

Would definitely recommend anyone who likes graphic novels!

Two communities separated by a hill and the woman in the middle of both. Jill disappears from these two communities and Val and Bianca find themselves teaming up to figure out what happened to her.

This was a quick read. I loved all the mystery surrounding the disappearance and the detective work both Val and Bianca did. Loved all the female characters. They were all complex and well-written. Poor Jill! She’s a fighter and survivor! Fantastic artwork. I loved the character designs.

Thank you, NetGalley and BOOM! Studios, for the ARC.

This is a graphic novel about two neighbors who discover the body of their neighbor at the same time. They're suspicious of each other, but decide to try and solve the murder mystery together.

I loved the neighborhood drama of this book and the different dynamics between the different cliques of neighbors.

I think a lot of mystery readers and graphic novel readers would really enjoy this. I sped through it.

I definitely want more books in this series. I would definitely read them.

I received an arc from Netgalley and the publisher for an honest review.

I love Sarah Gailey's work. She reminds me a lot of Joe hill with her wealth of different genres she dabbles in. When I saw that one of her comic books were available, I jumped on in. I really enjoyed the story! It had some LGBT+ overtones that she is famous for, as well as an interesting story about the abuse of power and how different two communities are, but not so different after all. I really enjoyed the artwork and how it all came together.

This was a pretty basic suburban murder mystery. I wish the backstory was expanded instead of just some exposition drops. Like there's this "empty" hill built between the white collar neighborhood and blue collar neighborhoods and they just say it's basically because the rich didn't want to think about the poor? Then the weapons factory closes and they just leave some weapons behind?

I like Sarah Gailey as an author, but it seems like graphic novels are not the best medium for her stories.

Thanks to BOOM! Studios and NetGalley for the ARC.

This was decent. The art was really good and I was pretty interested in where the mystery was going, but it just didn't really go in the direction that I was hoping it would and ended kind of blandly. It isn't a bad book and I enjoyed reading it. I just wish the resolution was a bit more satisfying.

I love it. The art style is absolutely fantastic and I love the way the two neighborhoods were broken up by background color. It took a bit for me to get into the storyline, but halfway through I was hooked! Such tension and terror - a fantastic and thrilling read with plot twists, deception, entertaining characters, and gore.

I received an advance reader copy of this book and am voluntarily providing an honest review.

Premise
Two key members from neighboring communities investigate a crime involving one of their own.

Liked
* Good use of duo narrative perspectives
* Shows how open mind and good-faith communication can resolve even the worst conflict
* Expressive art style
* Explosive finale

On Second Thought
* Fairly conventional villain

Closing Comments
The graphic novel does well to build a bigger story on top of a setup that could have easily stayed in the purely domestic realm. The ladies involved are relentless in their pursuit of justice, and the payoff is quite spectacular.

A good story. Wish it was longer. The lives that females have to live publicly and secretly. A nice backstory for the connecting towns. With the artwork, you get a mid 1900's vibe. The title itself has a lot of meaning in this story. This was an enjoyable story.
