Miles to run before I sleep is the true story of Sumedha Mahajan, a married, working woman who undertook an extraordinary journey. At an age when most women worry about household finances and the responsibilities of starting a family, she wanted to break the mould and follow her dreams. Sumedha was born with asthma and the hospital was her second home throughout childhood. She started running to keep herself fit and to prevent asthma attacks, but it developed into a way of life. Then, in April 2012, she took up the challenge of running 1,500 kilometres from Delhi to Mumbai in thirty days. When the run began, it was purely a physical challenge which she had set for herself but, as it progressed, it became a mental struggle that pushed Sumedha to her very limits. And, as she made her triumphant way to the finish line, she overcame not just her physical shortcomings, but also the extreme prejudice of onlookers who were convinced that she would fail miserably.
An account of gruelling adventure and a rousing story about finding oneself, Miles to Run before I Sleep both inspires and delights.
A very ordinary writing about an extraordinary achievement. The 2-stars is for the achievement only. The book does not delve deeper on the issue of the writer's journey or her self-discovery, neither does it go below the surface of the team bonding/ interaction, etc. It just reads like a person's musings, a journal entry. And it shows the author's stubbornness, discounting the genuine concerns of people around her, the signals her body is giving or the advise of experts, and it does not paint a positive picture of her.
Mahajan, Sumedha. MILES TO RUN BEFORE I SLEEP: HOW AN ORDINARY WOMAN RAN AN EXTRAORDINARY DISTANCE . Rupa Publications. Kindle Edition.
Book Review Well being a Runner and a Mentor for the group this book was part of my passion reading, and belive me I was more then happy to read this book One line Review - A must read for all the passionate Runners , Lets start The book have open an authors most precious moments of her life ,, this book have given the insight not only about the author but also a general mentality of an ordinary Indian girl who have a ok ok kind of health and fitness background but one thing is for clear to achieve or overcome anything you have to be passionate about it When I started the book I felt like the ending would be kind of same bollywood and happy but I was amaze to find the actually realistic ending and this is what makes it a real experience book I was in love with the titles of each chapter from A DEFECTIVE PICE TO END OF DREAM RUN , each chapter is very nicely put down The language used if very easy , straight to the point and up to understanding to one normal person even if he is a non runner Being a runner is itself a big deal and the Author have showcased it in such a manner that I was able to reflect on myself and ask if I am in anywhere so passionate as the author is ,,, she just didn’t fought to the people around her but she fought her own demons that were lying inside , the most important fight was a fight with the nature of being a human being , when we go beyond limits there will come a challenge and to go beyond this challenge we need passion and for this passion there is not other alternative, this book showed me that to achieve some thing great there are many recipes, but a common ingredient in all these Recipes would be PASSION , if you have that in you , there is nothing else in this world you need , The book is not just about Running The book is about philosophy on life ,
Who should read this book? A passionate runner should read this book - A husband to understand the passion of wife and the support you can be A daughter to understand the value of parents and their relationship A wife to understand the value of husband and his sacrifices A sibling to understand that they are the first strength to the other sibling A father and mother to understand the passion of child and how to get more out of him./ her A friend to understand the importance of good friends in life.. Without them the biggest achievement is just like nothing done and achieved It's a book on running But it’s more on the philosophy of life
The qualities I learned from the book • Be self depended, crew and organizers are not always the same as they are on the start • Your best assets – Family, Friend, yourself and your passion • Have passion in life , vision in life -, without it , you and dead animal have no difference • Pain is the part and parcel of your journey , if you want to avoid them , you are not going anywhere or doing anything or getting anything be ready to live life the others way • Success is never assure but its not always winning it a journey , it’s the ongoing process • Learn to stay alone , because you have to be strongest when you are alone- its rightly said that you are your biggest enemy or friend , it depends how you talk to yourself
Over all a good read not only for the single time but to kept in collection and can be read again ,
This is the story of will power (almost bordering on stubbornness), perseverance and obsession. No doubt what Sumedha Mahajan has done is something extraordinary. Kudos to her and more power to her. What she achieved in adverse physical conditions and demotivating and belittling social conditions is commendable. The message she gave in the book that women are no less than men is also well appreciated. But…. The book does not really do justice to the amazing achievement. It could have been more engaging. It sounds like a journal entry. The author has repeatedly mentioned that more than physical hardships, she had to go through emotional turmoil for this endurance run. But physical pain is described in more detail than the emotional roller coaster. Emotions were disposed off in one one word.. anger, pain, shame. She could have described how exactly she was feeling more elaborately. Also the relationships with her family and co runners and crew are sugar coated. There in nothing raw or heart touching there.. The typical pattern being all around her tell her not to do something out of care and worry for her, but she does it anyway. Don’t get me wrong, i applaud the fact that she does what she sets her mind to without listening to anyone. But it is NOT EASY.. especially for an Indian married woman. That struggle could have been made more alive for the readers to feel and live. I could not feel anything of that painful and challenging struggle. I would have given it 3.5 stars, but a sentence, ‘i sat on the beach in the morning and saw the sun rise over the arabian sea’ is making me cut that half star.. LOL!!
Another thing is that, i listened to this book on Audible. The narrator is Sakuntala Ramanee. Her English narration is crisp and good. But one thing that bothered me was this: The author has interspersed Hindi poems, song lines, motivational quotes etc. in her writing. The narrator has pronounced these hindi lines in such a ridiculous way as to show absolute disregard for Hindi language. She could have taken out 10min of her busy schedule to ask any one of 140crore Indians for correct pronunciations. I mean in lines ‘Hum honge kamyaab’, ‘honge’ is pronounced like ‘sponge’.. i would have rather she skipped those lines altogether than disrespect them in such a way.
Hats off to the lady who has run 1500 Kms in 30 days which is an amazing feet. The book narrates the day by day experience and the struggles that the author went through during her epic run. Initially the book was overwhelming, but started fizzling out as the days progressed by [Days mentioned in the book]. Some of the pages & lines were truly inspiring and I was just speechless at some of the experiences the author went through. However, on a whole I don't feel something right about the book. May be I had set some wrong expectations.
I understand that this is neither a novel nor an rags to riches story, but 25% of the book was more like an attack on the inefficient crew & management, in which place I would have liked to hear more on the experiences gone through by other runners. The author also sounds like ditching her personal life at some places which becomes 1 down on the inspiration part, as I've witnessed some women participating in marathons [not restricted to marathons] in addition to their personal life & family, which I feel is more inspirational. It would have felt good if the author had mentioned something about their contribution to the environmental cause after the run, but looks like it was limited only to the ranting during her run and everyone went back to their life post run. Author herself mentioned that media reach was also not that good or to the expected levels. So, again 1 down on that part too.
Finally I don't undermine the experiences & sacrifices of the author or the other runners, who am I to do that anyway. :) It's just that the book doesn't feel complete & missing eye openers in some areas.
It is story of Sumedha Mahajan , how from an asthamatic kid she went on to become an accomplished runner and completed 1500km Delhi to Mumbai run with Milind Soman. The book starts of with her childhood and how her father made them learn tennis to fight the asthma and other related challenges. She was not a runner and just to be fit she started running.Again all conventional wisdom she ran first long run as Tata Mumbai Full Marathon and then a few Ultra Marathons. She got an offer for the Greenathon from Delhi to Mumbai alongwith Milind Soman and was the only female runner as part of that team. After this stage is her daily chronicles of the run , the innumerable challenges , health issues , camaraderie ,logistic nightmares and tiffs with support staff and no media reporting. The achievement of Sumedha in the run is indeed inspiring but unfortunately the media never gave any publicity to the run and focus was only on Milind and no one else so her name remained unknown. It is a lightweight, interesting and inspiring read. I wish her more strength and hope she restarts her running journey again
When this year started, I made a list of things I want to accomplish in 2025. Trekking in Bhutan was one of them. And if I want to do that, I need to train. Running is the first step towards that.
The initial part of this book wasn't very engaging. However I found the second half intersting. The issues sumedha faced were surprising - I never thought running can be so taxing! She did achieve a great feat.
For me, I loved it when she mentioned that running gave her time to be with herself. Time to think. I'm looking forward to restarting running soon.
A story of the grit, determination and a surpassing of overwhelming odds by a long distance runner to achieve this massive feat of running from Delhi to Mumbai in 20 days. But why did we have to read of it from this book? Milind Soman has so many people he knows in the media, film industry, runners associations etc. Why was this not a social media campaign? The runners have had to not only suffer the torment of the harsh indian summer, but also the dis-interest of the media house which had only TRPs on its agenda. It was disheartening to know that that one runner dropped out after reaching Mumbai because the media team insulted him and he had no other back-up. These guys should have invilved the Forces for support enroute with regard to stay, running teams etc. Next time, they should plan something on routes where there are Forces. However, Sumedha has been very inspiring. Hope she continues running.
Sumedha Mahajan’s Miles To Run Before I Sleep, written in the first person and in a rather reminiscing style, makes for a quick read. With a brief introductory dip into her early years, Sumedha immerses her readers into the meat of the story – the long and arduous journey by foot between Delhi and Mumbai.
Invited by India’s model-turned-running evangelist Milind Soman, Sumedha is a part of a five member team that is doing the 30 days/1500 kilometres run. Called ‘Greenathon’, the run was an effort to raise environmental awareness and reduce pollution. Milind Soman’s presence ensured the presence of a news crew and publicity for their cause.
A lovely story and an incredible achievement that's let down by a very poor writing style and a sole focus on I, me and myself. The run was a team run, but there was no focus on others. I have taken part in a few endurance walks and it was a healthy mix of you and your team. It seemed like the author was the only one suffering - while for the rest life was a bed of roses. Also next to no mention of the Greenathon and the route and the villagers who helped them etc.
For someone looking for a run book, there are better books, for someone looking for a motivational book, there are better books. For teamwork definitely look elsewhere..
For someone looking at being irrational, having an ego trip and taking crazy risks with their body this is the blog to read..
I loved this book. Totally inspiring.. I read that few people have rated this book very low- just because Sumedha has just narrated her version of the epic 1500 kms run, although it was a team run..! But how does it matter! Its her journey from being an asthma patient to a full fledged runner..! I think this book is more than mere running.. its more about overcoming your shortfalls and winning over your fears..! I loved the book..! Totally. The writing style is natural and narrative types..! Go ahead and read it..
With this book and her journey, Sumedha has proved that determination is the key to success! A brutally honest account of her 1500kms run from Delhi to Mumbai overcoming all health obstacles, not to forget she was asthamatic since childhood, this book sends the message that it is so important to find your passion and persevere! The way her parents and husband have supported her throughout her journey is wonderful to read about! I would recommend everybody to read this book to know about this headstrong woman and how she broke barriers!
It's a real story of endurance and strong will power. The author has shown a very strong willpower to fight with asthma and while fighting with the illness she learnt the meaning of her life. This book didn't let me sleep until I finish it. I was unhappy when it ended. It also inspired me to run. It really an example of "where there is a will, there is a way". A good inspiring true story of Sumedha Mahajan!
Kindle : Kindle Unlimited I came to know about this book from Author N. Chokkan. I picked up a Tamil book named vetrikku sila puthagangal (part 3) by accident from the Connemara public library. Where author N chookan discussed list of books and one of the books he wrote about Miles to run before I sleep, which motivated me to read that book. This book was about asmatic women who ran 1500 kilometres from Mumbai to Delhi as part of a greenathon awareness drive. She had been ignored by her peers since she was a kid due to her asthma and lifetime battle with Asthama. Despite her early struggles and marathon hurdles, she was able to fulfil her goal of running 1500 miles in 30 days. I'd like to highlight some important quotes/sentences that I found interesting in this book : • To become a fighter, you need to learn an important lesson how to channel both encouragement and discouragement towards enhancing your performance • There is no difference between an animal and man expect the fact that the dead man may get a funeral. But a life that is lived without making a difference or making a mark does not deserve a funeral. Each one of us, in our brief time on this earth, is given a chance to make a mark, and unless we do that we all die an animal’s death by the road. • Long distance running is not just about training, stamina or talent. It has more to do with controlling your mind and building your perseverance. • Live your dreams. Follow your heart. Do not give up, no matter how many times you fail. Life is all about getting up and not going to sleep till the time your dreams are achieved. There is no tomorrow, today is all what matters. What I learned from this book was that if you wanted to be successful in life, you had to travel through a lot of difficult paths that required perspiration, persistence, and determination. I would recommend this book to anyone who want to achieve in their lives, those who lack confidence, and those who wish to engage in marathons, particularly long distance running.
It is a memoir of a married and working woman, who took an extraordinary decision to go on a marathon, with Milind Soman and the crew. They ran 1500 kms in 30 days, from Delhi to Mumbai. It started with being a physical challenge, but as the distance lessened, it became a mental challenge. The book is a day to day account of her experience during her epic run. Sumedha started running as a cure for her asthma attacks, but gradually it became a passion. How she overcame her physical weaknesses, and how she proved all those wrong who were sure that she would fail, is an inspirational story to read. Her day to day struggles during those 30 days were very motivating. She faced a lot of obstacles, major being the inefficient management of the crew. But her not being on good terms with the management team might be only her problem. The other side (other team members' experiences with the crew) was never told. At some points, she becomes very descriptive and repetitive. The narration of the whole event was also incoherent at times. Also, they were running for a cause. But when the marathon comes to an end, nothing is told about their achievement for that cause. Besides all these drawbacks, if we read the book only through motivational point of view, it's a wonderful book; very inspirational. Author's never-give-up attitude is the soul of this book. It gives a good message to the readers. Highly recommended for those who are going through tough times and want to come out of it gracefully.
This is not just a book about running—it’s about resilience, healing, and rediscovering your strength when life pushes you to the edge. Sumedha Mahajan’s journey from battling health issues and personal challenges to running from Delhi to Mumbai is raw, inspiring, and deeply personal.
Her story reminds us that endurance isn’t just physical—it’s emotional and mental too. Miles to Run Before I Sleep is a testament to what the human spirit can achieve when we stop limiting ourselves.
A beautifully written, soul-stirring read—especially for anyone who’s ever felt broken, yet still chose to move forward.
The plot was interesting.. but the writing let it down
Salute to the lady for the courage she showed 10 stars for the courage and determination
But I just couldn't connect as much I would have liked to Was expecting a big redemption like all stories but again I guess it's more of experience shared by the author and not a fairy tale.
The writing was repetitive at places and inchorrent at times. But still a strong message and inspirational story
I listened to the audiobook from audible , started it simply because it was available for free but honestly loved it a lot , firstly because it's the real experience of the author in her marathon journey and secondly because it would be an actual example of feminism and honestly I feel it's a must read but here and there i couldn't resonate with the author because I felt she should have taken care of herself more cause that's also another meaning of feminism but rest assured everything is perfect and a must must read🎀😀
good book. apart from running prowess Sumedha has written this book in a very gripping tale. couldn't help finish it. end of every chapter, she will create the excitement of what next :-) will she finish 1500 km , will she beat her injuries etc.....
i personally wanted to pick a book which can motivate a reader to go from 10k to 42k. Her story apart from a general good read is more of the day wise story of her endeavor to finish 1500kms in 30 days with Milind Soman and others.
What an inspiring story ! The author despite having medical issues from the childhood, having people around doubting her abilities has shown the world that if the mind is strong enough, each and every hurdle no matter how difficult it seems can be conquered. Hats off to you,Sumedha! You have truly inspired the people who always strive to show the world what they are capable of ! Worth a read.
Experiences and emotions captured endearingly in every page, every sentence. Sumedha's positive attitude under any circumstance combined with her extraordinary grit and determination gives hope to the reader and is truly inspiring. Kudos to Sumedha.
You need to have a very strong mind and supreme determination to overcome any hardships of life. Hats off to Sumedha for overcoming the physical constraints and live her passion....Awaiting for her next book how she managed her stardom and continued with her passion...
A detailed chronicling of one of the most underrated and mismanaged ultra run - Green-athon. But more than that it talks about the runners high and their motivation to achive one feat after the other. It's inspiring how Sumedha overcame her health challenges to achive such records in running in India. A great book for any runner to read Sumedha's journey.
"go and create your own miles to run, before you sleep ..." What a beautiful line. A good short read but I feel if she added 30-40 more pages and be a bit more descriptive of the situations back then. But overall a good read for endurance runners over the weekend. All the best to Sumedha for her new venture :)
This is a good story and I enjoyed seeing a running memoir from a very different culture. But her writing style is a bit lacklustre, unfortunately, and she doesn't really engage the reader by setting up other characters. She doesn't even really talk much about the cause she's running for. It needed a bit more editing to give it polish.
Very motivating!! Especially when I am recovering from a leg injury and surgery, being confined to a walker is frustrating!! Thanks Sumedha for the motivation!!
Sumedha went through tremendous pain and hardship to complete the record. Very inspiring story but could have been written differently. Just felt that something is missing.
I got lot of inspiration after reading this book. I am also a common man working in corporate life achieve my company's dream. This book atleast will help me for soul searching. A well written book by Sumedha.
Well written, describes about the ordeal the author went through while running from Delhi to Mumbai. Moreover, we also get to know about the authors never give up attitude against challenges be it health or any other adversity.
