After emerging from her Descent into an uncharted underground world, Ollie Miller is sure of three things. First, her feelings for her best friend, Mateo, are far from platonic. She can't even look at Mateo without blushing at the memory of his lips on hers. Second, an evil man named Zadok is plotting to destroy the civilization above the surface. Third, there is no way to save the earth without returning underground. At least this time, she will have her mother along with Mateo and her friends to help guide her. On their journey, noor, a mystical blessing guides them, but only if they’re willing to follow. Ollie’s determined to save the tribe from their evil leader, even if it means facing off with her long-lost grandfather. As Zadok comes face to face with his runaway daughter and his granddaughter, his plan starts to unravel, but is it too late to stop the destruction that he put into motion? Can the tribe survive and the surface be saved? Will Ollie learn to trust her own heart before it is too late? Defend is the conclusion to Ollie's discovery of a lost tribe in Descent. Don’t miss this adventure, brimming with ancient secrets and a thrilling underworld.
Kallie Ross has a passion for writing that has become an adventure in itself. She desires to create unique young adult fiction that incorporates legend, conjecture, fantasy, and conviction.
In addition to loving her life as a writer, Kallie adores being a wife, mother, friend, and teacher. She began her creative journey with books, a blog, podcast, and lots of caffeine. Ross never imagined her own adventure would be filled with so many wonderful people or words!
When will parents stop keeping the REALLY BIG secrets from their kids? Ollie has only recently learned who or what she is, or anything about her mother’s past and family. Now she is faced with an awful truth, the most powerful leader of the world underground may be ready to destroy everyone, and she may be the last chance to save the world from a crazed and power-hungry man, the grandfather she never met.
Kallie Ross takes us to another journey to the depths of the underground where a civilization has lived undetected for eons. With a special gift, noor, they have lived a relatively peaceful life, but the evil and twisted leader, Zador has literally been sucking the joy right out of them. Ollie, her mother and her friends may be Earth’s last defense. Welcome to Ms. Ross’ world in Defend, another brilliantly imaginative tale of good versus evil, the love of family, honor and the search for goodness, even in a hardened heart. Ollie has grown up, and is a great role model for teens, along with her best friend, Mateo. There is action, adventure, the unknown, hope, it’s all here and pieced together like an intricate puzzle. Get ready to explore caves, passageways and tunnels, smell the ancient dust and dirt far below our world and be amazed at the civilization that hides below our feet.
Another wonderful fantasy trip with Kallie Ross behind the wheel with characters that avoid the teen angst because, really, when survival is at stake, people grow up fast!
I received an ARC edition from Kallie Ross in exchange for my honest review.
Series: A Lost Tribe - Book 2 Publication Date: May 21, 2015 Publisher: Kallie Ross Genre: YA Fantasy - 13 years + Number of pages: 206 Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble Reviewed for: http://tometender.blogspot.com
If you are looking for an adventure and you love the Young Adult genre, this is a book and series you should be reading! DEFEND is the second installment to the Lost Tribe Series by Kallie Ross and I found myself whisked away once again to a fantastic world of underground cities, new cultures, and fascinating people. This second book picks up moments after DESCENT, the first book in the series, ends. I would recommend reading them in order since the first book establishes the backstory of what comes in the second book. Ollie and her friends finally made it safely home and when she beings to ask questions, she learns so much more about who her parents are, where they came from, and what they must do. It is her mother’s conviction, as well as Ollie’s and her friends, to save the people underground from danger and evil that causes them to embark on another underground adventure to save the world Ollie has just discovered is a part of her past, present, and future.
This book is set well within the YA genre. It is clean, with a small wisp of a romance between Ollie and her best friend Mateo. This story focuses on one girl’s conviction and courage to save a people from destruction. She is brave, fiercely protective of those she loves and those she encounters, and headstrong- determined to save her people no matter the cost. Ollie is a refreshing female character in the YA genre. She is intelligent, sweet, kind, and level headed. She thinks things through and her driving force is to protect those around her. In a world of emotional heroines who develop drama as they go, this young woman is refreshing. I loved how she grows throughout the series and takes her life and experiences in stride, learning from those around her and fighting for what is right.
The setting for this story is interesting. There is a whole world of people and fantastic life under the world’s feet. The world that these people live in is just different enough to be intriguing. The world that Kallie Ross creates is not so farfetched that it would be absurd, but instead it blends the world of fantasy and reality with something that could be. Their world is developed from a need to survive and thrive. There are new customs and traditions for our characters to learn and embrace, but nothing in the story is hard to comprehend. There are a few things I would have loved more on about these people and their history but the story and the development are perfect for the YA genre.
The themes of friendship, bravery, and kindness are interwoven beautifully into a story that is set in a world that could be teeming with life below our feet. There is excitement, heartache, and a strong desire for justice and reconciliation. I loved watching Ollie and her friends push through hardships and choose to make a difference in a world that was not their own. This story was an exciting tale of hope and bravery.
This book satisfied my need for a sequel in their story. One thing that you have to understand is that this is a second book and it's not a stand alone. Please read the first book before venturing to this one.
This book is still set in an underground series of caves. In book 1, our characters get to come back to the "top". However, because of unexpected circumstances, they go back and try to fix things in the tribe. I must admit, I was very worried that there will be accidents in this book.. like rocks falling on them or something like that. I'm just glad nothing too extreme happened to my faves!
I would say that they all definitely grew up. Our heroine, Ollie now thinks of everyone else before herself. She's sensitive to how others may feel and she's still strong. I love how she is with her mom. She's loyal to the bone and she loves her mom so much. :) I also love how she is with Mateo. I think she's more honest now and her internal monologues are sweet when it comes to him. *happy sigh* Her journey might have been rough, but I truly believe that she has learned a lot. She happier and she's a stronger person.
The other characters have also grown. Alex, Jesse and Mateo are now well equipped in battle! Hah! I mean... I think they're more prepared for bad scenarios. They're more careful and they watch out for one another more. The addition of new characters also doesn't hurt. :)
If you ask me who my favorite character here is.. I would say that it's KEREN. She's such a curious girl. I like how she reacts to new things. I also love how she reacts to jokes. Haha! Oh gosh.. it's even more funny that she takes them seriously! ;) I love her!
What you have to really look forward to is the author's description of the place. Their surrounding is as interesting as their situation. The author is very good at making me imagine all of it. I hope she sparks your imagination too.
Read this and know how these teenagers face their adventure of a lifetime! Watch how they will defend a tribe that needs just a little more blessing. :)
An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this book so much more than the first book! This time Olivia’s mom returns back with her to help, STOP HERE if you haven’t read the first book………, ok then, stop her grandfather from wreaking havoc on both the surface where Olivia lives and the underground world where Olivia’s mom is from. So does Alexis (Ollie’s best friend), Jesse (Mateo’s brother and a sort of love hate relationship with Alexis), and Mateo (Ollie’s’ now boyfriend).
The noor that lights the way and helps guide you underground is being stolen by Zadok, Ollie’s evil grandfather. Earthquakes are becoming more prevalent underground and on the surface due to this. Zadok is evil and that is where they are going to try to reason with him and fight him.
The first book took me a while to see it all. This book is much easier to see and understand what is going on. This would make a great movie with action and family and a little romance too! It is a really refreshing idea, this underground world with the noor that makes you feel good and protected as long as you go in the direction it leads you. And the evil Zadock who wants to destroy it and control the way others live their lives. Hmmm, sounds familiar in a way too. Good vs. Evil.
There is Alexis and Jesse as the sidekicks. Keren from the underground wanting to be like the surface dwellers. A good plot with humor and family and values and manners and a great story for anyone. It is also required to be in good shape to live this life with beasts and caverns and gaping holes in the floors and to be able to eat food without thought as to what kind of meat you may or may not be eating.

Review
The second installment of The Lost Tribes series, Defend takes us back to world beneath our own where we’ll join our friends Ollie, Mateo, Alexis and Jesse, along with Keren, Gabriel as they face the big bad crazy elder Zadok. Oh, and let’s not forget that Sarah, Olivia’s mother, is the daughter of said crazy leader making Ollie his granddaughter.
Crazy enough twist for you? Well if not hang onto your hats as Ollie learns that she can do things with her noor that she didn’t know was possible. The question is can she and her mother stop a madman from destroying both civilizations. As much as I’d love to tell you more, I can’t spoil the read for you. Kallie Ross definitely has a winner on her hands!
As with Descent, much of the story takes place beneath the earth’s surface as Ollie and company try to find and stop her Grandfather from destroying noor, and both worlds in the process. Earthquakes, cave-in and frightened tribal members make their journey fraught with hazard after hazard as well as teaching Ollie about trust, love, forgiveness and sharing of gifts. The transition of the entire race to allow individuals to come to the surface, including girls, and return home is mind-boggling. Then again, when most of the elder population has been killed by Zadok, it isn’t all that surprising. However, I am not looking forward to the next installment to discover what happened to secondary characters of Josiah, Gabriel and whether he is able to share their new way of thinking with the rest of the tribes living below the earth.
This is the second instalment of A Lost Tribe Series, and I was a bit apprehensive to begin with. Although I enjoyed Decent; the first book, it wasnt a book that pulled me in and I was worried that this instalment would be the same.
I enjoyed this book very much, the characters have come on a lot since the first book, which made this much more readable and enjoyable for me. I don't want to say too much and post spoilers, but this is a great YA read, and a great end to the series.
A little over a year ago, I was introduced to a debut author with a big story to tell. A story of hope, fantasy, and exciting adventures into the unknown. At the time, I didn't have any work with debut authors under my belts. I'd heard enough horror stories to leave me a bit leery. Ever potential fear, however, was completely abated upon diving into Ollie's world in Ross' Descent. I quickly took the story and devoured its' contents as one of the most unique and original novels I read in 2015. This debut novel very quickly climbed the ranks and earned a spot on my 'Best of 2014' list.
From the day I closed the back cover to Descent, I've pondered what was next for Ollie, Mateo, and the gang. What adventures would await them in their next journey? After twelve long months of waiting, Kallie Ross has relieved us all of anxiety with the release of Defend. The thrilling, heart-stopping conclusion to the Lost Tribe duology.
Picking up shortly after the conclusion of the first novel, Kallie Ross hit the ground running and didn't stop for over two hundred pages. Unlike its' predecessor, Defend has nothing to lose. It's face paced, dark, gritty, and comes with more feels than you can ever hope to handle: Defend has it all.
When it comes to the plot, I won't say much. As this is such a quick-paced novel, I'd hate to give away any potential spoilers. While the story does end on a much happier ending, the 'getting there' sure isn't easy for our cast of characters. With Ross' clever use of some unique plot devices, she draws in the reader and leaves them hanging on, page after page. With so much happening, i even found myself having to reread passages to ensure I was following along. You have to keep up with this on folks, don't take it lightly. I will admit that I was a little shocked that a few things didn't happen, but I really loved the way Ross handled her story. She took the reins and steered it in the perfect direction for her audience.
I was worried the story would wrap itself up in a neat, glossy little package where every character got their happy ending. I was shocked to see that the ending really provided some surprising feelings. Character allegiances are tested and the plot twists will leave you rearing. There was a much darker theme to Defend than book one. As always, this is a risk in a YA novel, but in this case I really believe this played well into the favor of Ross. It's a true testament to her storytelling ability.
Defend did an incredible job of keeping with the characters and expanding on their personas for book two. The novel has a fairly large cast so it's easy to get confused with who is who and who may or may not be important. Thankfully, Ross did a fantastic job of keeping her main characters in focus. many times I see series with large casts where the author spends more time on secondary characters than focusing on where the story is heading. Ross' means of writing allowed for both character development and plot execution simultaneously. This is a big plus for any reader. The characters were complex. Ollie continues to channel her feelings towards Mateo (even if I was hoping she ended up with Gabriel, lol), while Alexis and Jesse really shine in their scenes. A handful of new characters added to the mix bring some much appreciated emotion to the storyline and really help to up the ante. Our sadistic villain, Zadok, was made to be much more human in this second installment. While we did see some truly evil moves from him, it was great to see his backstory and read about what really made him into a monster.
In true Kallie Ross spirit, the setting to this novel was spot-on. The noor filled underground caverns, ravaged by the effects of seismic activity have changed a lot since Ollie's first journey into the underground. Darkness, fear, confusion, freedom. Ross is able to display such a plethora of emotion and reflect upon numerous themes with her descriptive settings. I truly hope she pens the screenplay when this series is optioned for film!
With this timeless story of adventure and redemption, Kallie Ross has secured her spot on the bookshelf of our bookish pleasures. Fans young and old, and from all walks of life will be moved by Ross' gripping tale. This second installment proves that she is only beginning to hone her true talent. This reader cannot wait to see what the future hold for Ross and her career. I know I'll be first in line for all of her upcoming reads. What about you?
It should come as absolutely no surprise that I am granting Defend by Kallie Ross and incredible-well deserved, 5-star review. Ross wrote this story to near perfection and I am so proud to say that I loved it. I highly recommend this novel to any and all YA readers, fans of fantasy, adventure, and for those of you who are looking for a unique read you can share with your bookish friends. While I'm not sure if there are plans for more novels based in this world, I can tell you without hesitation that I would be downloading them if there were! *****
I was given an ARC book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.
CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS
This book was another awesome book by Kallie. I am thoroughly impressed with the environment that Kallie has created with her descriptive words. I feel like I am actually standing with the characters of the book and can visually picture my surroundings. This book picks up where book 1, Descent, leaves off. I highly advise reading book 1 first.
Ollie (short for Olivia) has learned in book 1 that she is a descendant of the tribe that lives in the caves below the surface of the earth. Zadok is an elder of the tribe. He is has been causing earthquakes to destroy life on the surface as well as the tribe below. Ollie learns from her mom that Zadok is her mom's father. Ollie's mom, Sarah, has decided that she needs to travel to the tribe below the surface of the earth to attempt in stopping her father. Ollie will not let her go alone. Ollie and her friends gear up for an adventure to stop Zadok's plans and save the tribe that Ollie and her mom are apart of. Ollie's mom gets separated from the group. When Ollie finds her mom again, she is prisoner of Zadok. Is Ollie and her friends able to stop Zadok? What danger is everyone in? Does Ollie save her mom or lose her?
I recommend this book to anyone that likes the fantasy genre. This book is clean and a good read for pre-teens and teenagers. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to see what else comes from this author! And don’t miss the first book in the series, DESCENT!
