Just realised that, as popular as this author is, I’ve not read anything of hers before and I realise she writes under different versions of her name. So I am only referring to this one, Merry Farmer. This series is different from others as ‘MErry’’ and those appear to be all M/F, which I haven’t read in years.
Anyway. I enjoyed this fairly lighthearted look at the life of Drew, a newly famous actor and a self publishing author, hoping to be taken on by a big publisher/agent, while trying to convince the world that he is that famous actors boyfriend. That is even with the knowledge and encouragement of Jessie, Drew’s longtime girlfriend.
I liked both the MC, and disliked the girlfriend and I just knew she would do the dirty at some point. Some parts I saw coming before they hit the page. Despite all that, I was rooting for Drew and especially Declan, I liked his integrity when the going got tough.
A quick light read that occupied me on a holiday flight.
Anyway. Hints of some current events
As I was reading this book I was thinking that Merry Farmer was probably reflecting some current events that happened to the actors from Heated Rivalry and she confirmed that at the end of the book. In no way has she just taken what happened to those people and made it into a story. I do like what she has done with this inspiration though.
Drew is a complicated character who seems to be content just going along with other people’s ideas in the beginning, but after he gains some insight into himself he starts to grow up. Drew goes through more emotionally, but Lee is thrust into the spotlight and the bad side of fame and I like how Ms Farmer deals with that aspect of what these two go through. I read this book in one sitting and greatly enjoyed the whole thing.
Both the Rent-A-Boyfriend company and the series seem to be doing well and I hope they continue to develop as a team! Lol!

Actor Drew Oberlin, a "straight" man, became popular in the role of the "gay" star of a new TV series. However, when public accusations of being "fake" start mounting up, it could threaten to end his career. So Drew’s friend and manager, Abby, with the help of Jessica, suggests a plausible PR solution by hiring a fake boyfriend through Rent-A-Boyfriend to play the part of Drew's "real life" boyfriend when they start filming in London. Drew is partnered with Lee Cresswell and they become a fake couple, agreeing to pose for some "staged" photos, and pretending to be in a convincing romance. The goal is to convince the criticizing "internet audience" that they are truly together and are a real couple. We spend basically the first 25 pages establishing that Drew is faking being queer, BUT on page 28 we're told that Drew not only acknowledges that he's been attracted to men before BUT ALSO completely believed that he was more sexually fluid? What. Why set up "straight guy fakes having a boyfriend only to realize he isn't as straight as he thought" when "guy dating a woman (but is attracted to both men and women) needs a fake boyfriend to look more queer" is the actual story? Given Drew's acknowledgement of his sexual fluidity, this story shouldn't have been focused on queerbaiting, it should've been focused on bi-erasure. Drew should've been looking to hire a fake BF for exposure and feeling guilty about that rather than feeling guilty about "queerbaiting" BECAUSE HE'S LITERALLY QUEER.

A Likely Story is the second book in the ‘Rent-a Boyfriend’ series. It stars Drew Oberlin, a famous up-and-coming actor, and Lee Cresswell, an author. This is told in third person from Drew and Lee’s povs.
This is a fast and fluffy read. There is a conflict point but not that much. Drew and Lee are well-suited to each other and I could believe in them as a couple. I’d say this is a story more about Drew realizing he’s bi and coming-out, rather than a story about queer-baiting. If Drew is bi then he can’t be queer-baiting.
I couldn’t sink into the plot as much as I wanted because of two main issues. Drew and the ‘Fake Boyfriend’ agency, wanted to remain on the downlow. But they meet Drew in a coffee shop where scads of people show up all the time. They speak aloud about hiring a fake boyfriend. It’s like they wanted to be caught. Drew or the agency should have rented a private conference room or hotel room to discuss things. I suppose the coffee shop was used to lead into the next scene, which was being mobbed by fans. However, there are multiple instances that Drew or Lee speak in public or around others about ‘fake-boyfriends.’ This really threw me out of the story.
The second issue is that Lee has to sign an NDA. But what does he do? He discusses everything with his author friend. He’s totally broken the NDA. How did he expect to even write a tell-all book with an NDA? The fact he didn’t outright say no and actually consider it; told me he couldn’t be trusted to keep secrets.
Overall, I liked the plot and the characters. Drew and Lee suited each other. However, the two big inconsistencies for me had me disbelieving the plot and not trusting Lee. Cute story, but I give this book, 3 Stars

Another awesome story from this series! I love the fake boyfriends trope so much and these two were just chef’s kiss.
Drew thought that going along with his girlfriend’s plan of getting a pretend boyfriend would solve his problem. Instead, it got him in a much more deeper hole because now he couldn’t stop thinking about the gorgeous man that had been paired with him.
The chemistry between Drew and Lee was instantaneous. The easy way in which they clicked and felt comfortable with each other, was something he had never felt before.
The more time he spent with Lee, the more he realized he wasn’t really straight. Lee made him feel things he had never felt before and he wanted to explore those feelings.
Lee was completely smitten with Drew from the moment he met him. Drew was down to earth and genuinely kind. For him to pretend to be his boyfriend wasn’t difficult. The difficult part was holding himself back from falling for him. Spoiler alert: he fell. Hard.
The plan worked so well that everyone believed they were in love. But when the truth comes out in the most backstabbing way, everything Drew and Lee were building, is threatening to fall apart.
Doubts and the ever faithful social media trolls almost destroyed them. Misunderstandings and miscommunication caused a drift between them that almost broke them apart. But what they felt for each other was so much deeper than that.
They faced the storm together and managed to save both their careers. Opportunities might been lost along the way, but they never lost each other.
I can’t wait for Nikky’s story. This whole series is really good!

This is book two in the author’s Rent-A-Boyfriend series and features Drew and Lee. The former is an adorably confused actor just trying to save his career by renting a boyfriend (at his GIRLFRIEND’S suggestion!) in order to squash rumors that had cropped up following him starring in the new gay TV series regarding his sexuality. (This was absolutely a new take for me; usually it’s the other way around, they want to appear NOT to be gay! I enjoyed it though, it’s always fun to read the unexpected.) The latter was a romance writer working as a rent a boyfriend for research in his writing but neither man could’ve anticipated the way they actually fell for the other… what began as a totally fake relationship… that was the sweetest thing but to hear a man refer to someone as “the love of my life,” that phrase right there, that MADE this book for me🥰.
Anyway, gushing aside, this was such a good book. It was a slow burn—which normally isn’t my preference, but it was so worth it here, a little bit of drama—again, not my go to, but the storyline couldn’t have advanced without it so I didn’t mind, and sweet as sugar—LOVED it! For a fun read that turns expectations on its head and that’s sure to melt your heart, check this one out! 4.5 stars

This was a delightful story of accidental love. Drew is an actor on a meteoric rise to fame. His break out role as a gay character in a popular TV show has thrown him for a loop. A lot of people seem to assume he's gay since the chemistry between him and the other leads was off the charts. Quite a few people also accuse him of queerbaiting. To head off those accusations, and spurred on by his girlfriend, he agrees to a fake boyfriend situation. Lee is a romance book author with a decent following. He does gigs with Rent-A-Boyfriend to find material for his books. It's fun, low angst, and gives him great ideas. When the 2 get paired together by the service, neither has any idea that it will be life changing. It's really a sweet story about 2 men coming to terms with fame, sexuality, and what is really important to them. Drew and Lee have great chemistry as characters, even if I did get a little frustrated with Drew sometimes. He is just a little slow on the gay uptake (ha ha). I was worried that the girlfriend character would be just a full on harpy with no redeeming qualities, but I think she got to work on making things right. Overall I really enjoyed it and would recommend.

This the second book in the Rent a Boyfriend series and I loved it. Drew who has recently shot to stardom after being on a tv show where his character was gay and Lee who is a famous erotic fantasy author. They are both navigating their future dreams of being more than they are currently famous for. With the suggestion from Drews girlfriend Jessica, Drew considers entering into a fake boyfriend relationship to see if that can slay the social media beast that he is experiencing.
Lee receives some benefits of being tied to Drew with his previous book sales skyrocketing as Drews fandom seeks out his novels. It was a great read to see how Drew discovers himself and how he navigates his sexuality while he addresses the continuing attraction he is having for Lee. But it is not all smooth sailing and many challenges are set to test them before they can have a HEA.
Can't wait for the third book of the series.

If you love fake dating, miscommunication, and a reality tv drama romance this is a great book. I enjoyed seeing Lee and Drew hanging out and starting to like each other that gradually grew to Love. With both of them being famous in their own ways there were ups and downs with the relationship and their careers. I loved seeing how they worked through their difficult times to get their HEA. Another great book in this series. The cliff hanger at the end keeps me waiting impatiently for the next book.

This is book 2 in the series, but you don’t have to read the first book to understand this one. This book is about a famous actor, Drew, and a semi-famous author, Lee. They are set up by Rent-A-Boyfriend to fake date. Drew has a girlfriend but starts having his bi-awakening with Lee. This is a very sweet story; the drama is minor to the love story. I do recommend this as a low angst short story.

July 11, 2026This is one of those stories that takes off right out of the gate... even before Drew himself sees the chemistry, the reader is drawn in. Fake dates feel real, the connection is there just waiting for Drew to experience his bi awakening... These two characters are absolutely adorable, as is most of the supporting characters... it can't be a movie star romance without some drama though - and you'll know pretty much from the get go who will instigate that...
This book is a cute, quick read and great for your summer holiday reading! I can't wait to see what happens in book 3!

Bardzo mi podobał początek i pomysł na wynajęcie chłopaka, że później tym większe było moje rozczarowanie. Motyw zdrady nigdy nie będzie dobrze brzmiał w romansie no chyba, że związek z kobietą był tylko przykrywką. No i ten brak decyzyjność Drew przeciąganie zerwania by rzucić dziewczynie prosto w twarz, że spał z kimś innym. Szczerze nie dziwię się, że się wkurzyła. Zresztą myślę, że taki początkujący związek może mieć problem przy takich medialnych atakach trudno uwierzyć w happy end. Skończyłam tylko bo krótka.

This is book two of Rent A Boyfriend series and it is funny, romantic, tense at times with a happy ending. Drew is a very famous actor filming in London but his ex girlfriend thinks he needs to hire a boyfriend to stop the social media blitz after his last film. Lee is chosen as the candidate to fill the slot. Lee a romance writer thought it was the perfect answer to do some research for his next book. Except it sort of went astray when they both clicked and became close. I look forward to Nicky’s story.

Another great read from Merry Farmer!! I love this second installment of the series. I love how Drew discovers himself, how both characters deal with life, and the love that grows between them. I like that it's low angst between the two of them and that it's a secondary character that creates unnecessary drama. I devoured this book in about a day.

Cute, easy to read, relatively short book, about fake dating, with high chemistry and bi-awakening. I enjoyed reading this low-burn romance but fast paced and low drama story. Both characters are sweet, I just wish they communicate better. It's a light, fun reading.
This is the second book in the Rent a Boyfriend series, and it ends on a cliffhanger/teasing for the 3rd book. It can be read as a standalone.

A Likely Story is the second book in the Rent-A-Boyfriend series and can be read as a standalone. This is a fake dating, sexual awakening, low angst read about Lee and Drew. I really enjoyed this sweet storyline and the wonderful characters, another great book in the series and I can't wait for the next one.

I really enjoyed this book. It was light and easy reading. What starts out as a publicity stunt, becomes so much more. Merry is one of my favourite authors, and I haven’t read one of her books, that I haven’t enjoyed. If you enjoy the fake boyfriend trope, or even just a good book, I recommend this book.

Un joli feeling good a lire pour retrouver le sourire : une star hétéro qui joue le rôle d' un personnage gay ( ça rapelle plein de acteurs mais c'est le propre d' un acteur : jouer tout personnage ) qui embauche un écrivain en quête d inspiration via un intermédiaire. Un bon scénario convaincant mais plus style romance Harlequin avec un hea bien sûr.

I loved Drew and Lee.
Both famous in their own right, there's some conflict with their work life and the relationship.
It was wonderful to see them spend time together actually getting to know one another better.
This leads to lines blurring because this is fake, isn't it, until it becomes reality.

A Likely Story by Merry Farmer, Rent-A-Boyfriend Book 2, features Lee, a published author, as the fake date and Drew as the breakout actor trying to navigate fame and the expectations of the public. The book is funny, light-hearted, a bit meta at points (enjoyable so), and has a happily-ever-after, with suitable twists and turns along the way.

Wow. I absolutely loved this story. Drew and Lee were awesome. Lee, the author. Drew the celebrity learning how to manage being famous. Drew finding and learning about his sexuality. I absolutely loved how Lee and Drew interacted, supported, and loved each other. Wonderful ending. I can't wait to read the next in this series.

Wonderful story of Drew Oberlin, an actor and Lee Cresswell, an author who meet through Rent-a-Boyfriend. Perfect for each other, but their jobs, sexual orientation, family circumstances and old friends may just put an end to their relationship. Couldn't put it down!!

Great book! Mentioned in the afterword by Ms. Farmer, but I had the same thoughts which she confirmed. It did sound potentially parallel to current events. Fabulous book! Looking forward to the next!
