Since returning to his roots working for Yuko alongside Domeki, Watanuki has had a strange feeling of deja vu, and upon receiving a visitor with a tale of exchanged coins and a chance encounter with a familiar bird cage, he finally understands why.
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Takes an interesting and well thought out turn. I like what CLAMP is doing with this sort-of "reboot" of Xxxholic. Characters are staying true, and the storyline has appealing depth. And the art is still lovely.
Re-read 2022: OMG, I am crying! So much crying! This was so beautiful and heart-breaking to read again. So many clues coming together, the choice that Watanuki has to make becomes clearer and even more difficult, I love all the symbolism (the cages, the phones), plus I love how it all came together in the end, and then I completely broke down, just like I did when I read the book almost 7 years ago. :( I did feel that the DoumekixWatanuki thing and how they constantly argue is getting a bit annoying, especially in a volume like this, in a series like this. It feels out of place. A bother. Now I can finally read #4, but I do hope that #5 will come out soon, because I don't want to wait another x years. XD And a big thank you to this re-read for bleaching my mind of the meh/terrible book I read before this one (Haunting of University Park).
--------------------------------------------- First read (2015): Not a long review due to the huge amount of stuff happening that could potentially be a spoiler, but I just want to express my feelings for a bit.
This was a great volume, even with the long wait between volumes I can step easily in the world of xxxHolic and immediately know what happened in the previous volumes. In this one we finally find out what is going on with Watanuki and the world he is in. We find out what choice he has to make and there are several other things happening that make me wonder. Who is calling Watanuki and who calls him by his first name? There are a few candidates, though I can't remember if any of them ever spoke to Watanuki and used his first name. I can't wait to find out.
It was really good to still see Yuuko, though I guess by the next book we won't see her any more. And this makes me sad. Yuuko is a fantastic character and I really like her. I like how she is, at times wise, but at other times just a big kid.
Doumeki and Himawari are still good characters, though I am getting a bit tired of the Doumeki x Watanuki shtick they have going on. I know I was also getting bored of it in the first series. It was just annoying, I know that they don't hate each other, but it does feel this way with how they act. How Watanuki acts around Doumeki.
The art is once again gorgeous and I really love seeing all the details that are present. There is a lot of symbolism and a lot of hints for the story.
I can't wait for the next volume, especially since I really want to see Syaoran again!
Nanase Ohkawa, your sick and twisted mind... Incidentally, CLAMP announced earlier this year that they will be resuming this series after an almost 10 year hiatus. Maybe we can get an English reprint from Kodansha?
In this volume that concludes the current story arc, Watanuki finally starts piecing together what is going on. While Doumeki, Yuuko and even Himawari have been waiting for him to realize while also supporting him, Watanuki's instincts are getting stronger, and the 'contact' he completes the puzzle for him. It does seem worth mentioning that it is sometimes conscious and sometimes subconscious, the way he reacts to those feelings of deja vu, so I wasn't exactly clear how much he was unaware and how much was him being in denial. But the ending of this volume and the explanation it gave, and his choice - I was non-stop crying for those parts, because there was that pain ALL OVER again. I loved the style so far in this storyline - even on just the artwork level, the motifs and symbolism and everything had me so in awe, because I was once again mind blown with the world CLAMP creates. Lastly, the crossover with Tsubasa World Chronicle means that I should probably go read it to catch up on the story.
At first I wasn't sure how this series tired in to the original xxxHolic series or if it connected to Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles World. But this volume definitely shows how it connects or Tsubasa World. CLAMP is certainly great at feeding fractions of hints throughout the series, slowly adding more and then revealing the true meaning or connection when it has the most impact.
So I wondered why Watanuki was back in a time when Yûko was still in the shop. I felt that embarrassed "of course" moment when it was revealed that he wasn't in his time or dimension. It was when (in Tsubasa World) Watanuki told Syaoran that he went to another dimension to see Yûko but not the real her, and he would leave his memories behind while he was there. This series show that time, of Watanuki collecting the items he needs to give Syaoran to help him with his quest.
I love how intricatly over these stories are! Such great storytelling!

Aaaaaa....!!!
Udah gitu Rei nggak diteruskan pula. Huhuhu, ntar langsung cari XXXHolic Rou 4 OVAs animation aja deh. Biar puas.
Oh what a plot twist! Well done, CLAMP! What a bait and switch. I thought I knew what was going on, and you proved me wrong. Now everything I had issue with in the first volume makes sense. Bravo, bravo!
So, obviously this connects to Tsubasa again. I haven't started World Chronicle yet (the sequel to Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle) so I'm thinking this will play a part in that. But we'll see.
Only one more volume of Rei remains. For now. Hopefully CLAMP returns to this series soon!
Ugh. This volume was heartbreaking. The dream had to end, and it's so sad to watch Watanuki not just have to leave, but choose to leave. Even more heartbreaking to see the mild surprise and the relief on Doumeki that Watanuki came back.
You can Hear this volume. It moves very much like a film, or a short story- or a dream. A volume of explanations and revelations. I love the ringing phone and everyone's cryptic conversations.
Hello to the very important Tsubasa crossover, I still haven't read you...
The call was coming from inside the house, of course.
The latter third or so of this volume explains things a little too clearly for my taste, but Watanuki's second parting from Yuuko (is she, or isn't she?) was moving, just as it should be.

Finally! We get some answers, and it's just as good as I'd hoped. Things were wrapping up so nicely that I thought this was the final volume, but it appears there are two more to look forward to. Can't wait!
Oh my goodness, I love this. I really like the idea of alternate realities anyway and playing with that more here makes me want to go read Tsubasa even more.
Sesuai dugaanku, Watanuki kembali ke masa lalu buatan. Dan Himawari sekaligus Doumeki adalah yg asli dari masa depan, bkn yg buatan. Kalo Yuuko? apakah dia buatan Watanuki? Nah, temukan jawabannya di chapter 38. Perkiraanku, chap 38 itu termasuk vol 4, yg bakal kuberi 5 stars krn plot twist-nya. :) Well, tebakanku soal back to the past itu memang benar, tapi dugaanku soal alasannya itu salah bgt, hahaha. Walaupun Watanuki sempat bingung, apakah dia harus kembali ke masa depan? Atau tdk?
Good job, Clamp. Nah, kali ini xxxHolic Rei juga bakalan crossover ama Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (TRC) lagi, sekuelnya TRC mksdnya. Omong2, sekuel TRC baru keluar chapter 1 sejauh ini, kayanya aku mau nunggu sampe chapter-nya byk dulu baru dibaca deh. Memang langkah yg sangat tepat utk membaca xxxHolic Rei sekaligus 38 chapter, bknnya chapter per chapter. Krn bisa lbh paham dan lbh menikmati ceritanya, apalagi episode back to the past ini kelar di chap 38. :) Dan di chap 39 itu episode dgn Syaoran dkk akan dimulai, kayanya. ;p
Watanuki is still working for Yūko at her shop, but he's realizing that he must make a choice, whether to remember or not to remember. Yūko is her cryptic self as always, and as Wakanuki teases out the truth behind his situation, we realize that xxxHolic: Rei is not a reboot of xxxHolic but a continuation of the story.
Those who didn't appreciate the cross-over of Tsubasa with xxxHolic may not be happy that Tsubasa will continue to intertwine with the story. Last year, CLAMP announced that they would be revisiting Tsubasa with a mini-series (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/...), though I don't know if we'll get that release over here in the States. If not, I will hope that maybe I'll see a glimpse of Fai in xxxHolic: Rei sometime soon!
