What a great debut novel. A quick and twisting story. I am anxiously awaiting book two.

Thank you Jason Grabow for the eARC and here is my voluntary review.
This was a fun, fast paced action filled book. That I would say is a solid 4.5 stars, I rounded up because I enjoyed the read, and would recommend to teenage readers and older who want an action book with some mystery, little gore and no romance (not my typical fantasy read so it was a nice break).
The beginning was excellent in my opinion due to it's slightly creepy, suspenseful battle scene right from the start. It piqued my interest. The rest of the book follows for the majority two main characters on different paths that eventually do cross. There is the cocky, overconfident thief Reeve who is trying to make a name for himself as a mercenary. He meets up with a badass female mercenary named Venna that he admires and wants her to help him out of a predicament. The other character is Asteria who is a mage at a school, she is disciplined and talented going on a mission with some school friends. There are side characters along the way that help and/or hinder the main characters along the way. Likely the side characters that would continue in the series would be Uncle Martin and Reeve's friends? It is a lot of story within the pages and it is fast paced so there is not the relationship development between the characters that longer books would have. The ending ties everything together but leaves opportunity for the series to continue. This would be a great read for someone wanting to get into fantasy with an easy to follow storyline and not interested in romance. There is magic, monsters and sword/arrow skirmishes.

Very nice story, really loved the speed of the last 100 pages. Can’t wait for book 2.

From page 1, this book swiftly pulled me into the rich, well-developed world of the city-state of Kingshaven, caught between two warring nations and haunted by mysterious disappearances and whispered legends of a “Mage Hunter.”
The story follows two main characters: Reeve Blackwood, a mercenary suddenly framed for a high-profile murder and forced to clear his name, and Asteria Aziel, a highly trained mage and daughter of a high general.
What starts as a dual narrative of survival and duty quickly develops into something darker and more complex as both characters discover that the world beyond the city walls is far stranger—and more dangerous—than they knew.
If you enjoy fantasy that mixes political tension, mystery, mercenary grit, and a touch of the supernatural, Shadows of Kingshaven is an easy recommendation!
I absolutely can’t wait for the sequel. And I hope and pray the author doesn’t keep us on his hook waiting for years. (*dark annoyed dragon glare toward one George R. R. Martin)
