It’s time for Nobukuni and Sasaki’s big date! Eventually! As she struggles to come to terms with things going her way, can Nobukuni overcome her anxiety and have a good time?

Phew. This volume comes soaring in high on the great showing of the previous one, like a majestic eagle, then comes crashing down like a clay pigeon on Jupiter. It abandons its solid gags for relentless dithering, an awful substitution if there ever was one.

Nobukuni ends up pushing the date back and this whole exploration of her anxiety pays off in no real way, although the chapter where she and Ema attempt to fumble their way through makeup is actually really good. More of that would have been welcome.

The endless awkward of the date itself might be realistic, but it being the focus of most of the volume quickly wears out its welcome. The story rolls itself back for the return of its body shaming as well, which is too bad.

Watching Sasaki and Nobukuni awkwardly (I cannot emphasize that word enough)trying to figure out the concept of hand holding is, in theory, cute, but the whole thing just left me utterly cold. It’s all awkward (see!?) with no payoff and it’s not like we didn’t know she was like this.

Some parts of the date work; them accidentally going to a popular proposal spot is a fun bit of business, and the point where Nobukuni finally realizes that she should calm down and enjoy herself is practically a blessing. Too bad it comes right at the end.

When Sasaki gets a chapter of his own to ruminate on his date, adroitly flipping the series’ title in the process, it provides all of the good stuff that the previous 90-odd pages should have contained. That obliquely counts as payoff, except you’ve just spent so many leaden pages getting there.

The last section is about Airi making new friends after she ends up in the soup due to her persistent lateness. It’s also a long walk to the small nuggets of the burgeoning friendship at the end. Which may pay off next time, or not.

That’s the big problem with this volume; it spends way too much time treading over the same thing relentlessly and not actually going anywhere. When what you get is so underwhelming, it’s hard not to feel shortchanged.

2.5 stars - doggedly wastes its time, but the bright spots are just, and I emphasize just, enough to keep it from getting two stars. Hopefully a momentary lapse and not a bellwether for the next one.

Seeing how awkward yet sweet the date between Nobukuni and Sasaki was very cute to see play out. I’m very intrigued with the glimpse of now Sasaki potentially being the flustered one in their dynamic, although with both of them still being so dense I think they’ll just unintentionally make each other very flustered from now on. Nobukuni and Sasaki’s overall dynamic makes me wonder when/if they will get comfortable around each other to act much more relaxed.
Also, I’m very intrigued to see Nobukuni’s friend: Airi interacting with this new character who’s in the student committee. I like that Airi is getting a bit more attention in the story.

There’s something off about this series. I don’t mind the slow burn with our main couple, but the dialogue doesn’t flow, especially the chapters with Airi. I don’t usually harp about translations, but I’m wondering if this series Japanese dialogue is difficult to translate. It just doesn’t seem natural to me. Hopefully the next volume will improve.

A very cute volume, and that last chapter has me rather excited for the next one!
