I so wanted to love this book. The description is awesome, the cover is awesome..but I just could not get into it. I loved the character of Adrian and some of the others, but it just wasn't enough.

I loved the idea of the magical creatures and of course fighting evil and the love part, but I don't know.. it just didn't grab me.

Maisie Lindsey comes to the Fallen Angels Abbey to get someone to help her land of Wyldonna from the evil Glayer Felsteppe. They send Adrian Hailsworth to help her. Adrian is shocked to find out Glayer is still alive because he thought he killed him. Doesn't that always seem to happen!

There are a lot of different creatures on the island, some beasts I can't even explain and you have trolls, sirens, fairies, and more I can't think of them all.

Adrian and Maisie fall in love, but it didn't move me. Yeah, I know, what's wrong with me!

I think there will be plenty of people out there that will love this book! Mine is just one opinion :)

Kindly provided with an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review......

Okay, before I begin let's just take a moment to appreciate Mr Book Cover model......okay, a little longer......moment over !.

I can honestly say that I entered into this read believing it was an Historical romance and found SO MUCH MORE !!!. A brotherhood of HOT crusaders........dear god YESSSSS !!!. Although this is book 2, I had no problems grasping the story line.

Having Mr cover model help my brain to visualise Adrian was like a god send (pun intended !). This is Adrian and Maisie's story. Adrian really has had some bad crap done to him and he's recovering at the "Abbey of the brotherhood of the Fallen Angles" to heal. He struck me as quite alone, Adrian learn's but he is plagued by nightmares of the awful things he suffered in the past. I wanted to hug him.....but he's all warrior now !!!

Maisie enters the story asking for help to save her land and queen. At first she is greeted with scoffs as Wyldonna (her homeland) is a legend.....or is it ?. One things for certain is Maisie needs help and Adrian is appointed to assist her. Adrian discovers that an adversary he thought he had killed may still be alive in Wyldonna and he is soooooo on board to rectify that situation. Lucky you Maisie for getting this hunk of holy crusader to help you !!!

Proceeding.....

Yes,this is a love story but it's more.....its a journey that you live with the two, especially Adrian. There is ALOT going on, so I would encourage you to start this book when you know you have time to give it your full attention. I found myself having to re-read a chapter or two just to make sure I still had the thread.

Overall a wonderful historical romance !!

Well done Heather.

Many thanks Netgalley for this opportunity.

Later peeps xxx

I was so blown away by the first book, Valentine, that I was anxious for the rest of the series. This book is about Adrian, the angry and brooding scholar of these wrongly accused and hunted men. Where the first book with the dashing Valentine and eager Mary/Maria was more of a straightforward historical adventure, this one had a different feel added to the action - fantasy. Although I was a little hesitant in the beginning and it's not my preference, I loved it and it fit perfectly! I liked how that element challenged Adrian to think beyond only the logical vs. faith, belief and the unknown (not the religious kind, but magical). Also, the adventure from the first book is still there, but this one has a bit of a puzzle to the plot.

We know from book one that Adrian and Constantine were imprisoned for some time until Roman rescued them and Valentine (who was unfortunately captured when he tried to bribe the wrong person to get them out). This briefly flashes back to that time and I had a pit in my stomach the entire time I read about his suffering. Adrian is a different hero for me -sometimes I wasn't sure if I really cared for him too much, but by the end when he's growing stronger (physically and mentally), he's incredible.

Similar to Mary from the first book, Maisie is a strong and witty heroine. My favorite aspect from book one was the witty and quick banter that made it so unexpectedly humorous. As much humor as it has, there are several scenes that rip your heart out. This book gave me a major rollercoaster of the feels. Towards the end, ugly cry. Although I understand the ways of her people, I was ashamed they just stood there.

"Loving someone - a brother, a people, a ruler, a place - did not guarantee that your feelings would be nurtured or returned. Indeed, sometimes love meant doing what you must, what you were born to do, even knowing that you would be hated for it."

Gulp.

Just like the first book we don't see very much of the other characters except for the beginning and end. I was absolutely delighted when the author tied a secondary character from book one into this story .

Roman's story is the next book. Although I like him, I haven't been able to get a connection or visual on him. BUT there's a sneak peek at the beginning of his story that has completely changed my opinion and I'm excited for July 2016!! Then I REALLY want Constantine's story. I even want Francisco's story if that's ever a possibility (Valentine's cousin who wants to marry his sister).

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley from Kensington Books for an honest review. Thank you!!!

**I received a free eARC copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

I don't even know where to begin with this review. I read the first book in the series Valentine and loved it. This book was so vastly different from that book it is like comparing night and day. Was the first book better? That depends - if you are expecting this book to pick up where that one left off and continue in the same vein, you will be very disappointed.

This book does pick up where Valentine left off, but it veers way off the medieval romance trail and goes headlong into medieval fantasy/paranormal romance

Adrian is the scholar of the group, he was also the one most violently abused in captivity. He is barely alive when Roman recuses them and has spent the last couple of years healing from his wounds - mentally and physically. He is an angry, bitter man. When it is revealed that their enemy was not killed as they believed, Adrian reluctantly volunteers to go to Wyldonna (a mythical/magical island) to help the queen find a treasure and thwart Gladyer's evil plans.

When Maisie and Adrian meet for the first time - it is most definitely not love at first sight. He is annoyed and she doesn't have time to waste coddling him. She is wondering if she has time to "trade him in" for another monk. But when she sees the tattoos on his arms (that he had done to cover his scars), she believes he is destined to come with her.

Adrian is a very logical man - if he can't see it or hasn't read about it - he can't believe it. From the very beginning of their adventure - he cannot/will not accept that Wyldonna is a magical place. He even tries to rationalize Maisie's magic.

Once they get to her castle, he starts to believe, and as he accepts what before he couldn't, he begins to heal and become stronger.

The romance in this book was very subtle and the love scenes subdued. I believe they loved each other - but the romance was not in the forefront of the story. This was more about Adrian healing than it was a love story between Maisie and Adrian.

The ending was heartbreaking - I read it and didn't believe it, I almost stopped reading - but thought there is no way it is going to end like this and thankfully, it didn't

I did enjoy this book - it was reminiscent of Bertrice Small's "World of Hetar" Series - minus the really hot love scenes. I can honestly say it wasn't what I was expecting, but it was very good. I think the writing was excellent and the storyline very imaginative. If you are looking for something a bit different - this is the book for you.

I am glad I read it and I look forward to Roman's book!

Can you believe in fairytales without seeing them? Maisie will do anything to safe her brother & her kingdom even if she has to give up her life. She travels far to find a painted man from her kingdom's history book.
Adrian is still trying to get over his time as a captive where he was tortured and almost lost his life. He owes his life to his friends so he agrees to go on the quest to find the treasure for Maisie & her queen. He doesn't believe in magic but that is all about to change, can it really be so?
Maisie has lied to him but that is the only way she could get him to come, she has betrayed his trust she had no choice.
Can they fight the evil together before it is too late for either of them.
A great book full of magic, fairies, trolls, giants & even a dragon. A book of friendship, new beginnings and revenge. I really enjoyed this story as it is all so believable and who doesn't want to believe in magic. I was lucky enough to get a copy in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

This is the second book in the "The Brotherhood of Fallen Angels". I have not read the first book in the series, so for me it was a stand alone book. Adrian Hailsworth, who has had what I think to be a awful / hard life. So much so, that he has nightmares of his past. Adrian is at the The Brotherhood of Fallen Angels Abbey to heal. While there our heroine, Maisie Lindsay comes there to ask for help with about Wyldonna, her Queen and Maisie home. At first, when Adrian is told the story by the Abby he doesn't believe such a place exist, but when they mention his enemies name that is blackmail the little country he finds that he must go there to see. Adrian thought he had killed him and can't think he is alive. He meets up with Maisie to start their journey to her homeland and starts their story of love and the what they have to overcome

Expecting to read a historical romance and finding dragons, trolls, giants and other mythical creatures in a setting that was more magical than Medieval was a bit of a surprise. Putting that aside was not easy but after I did I found the story to be a fun, easy read that provided possibilities in a fantastic setting along with an interesting romance between Adrian and Maisie. The novel allowed a glimpse into what the other Fallen Angels were doing and provided information about Glayer Felsteppe, who continued to be the bad guy in this book as he was in Valentine, the first book in the series. Book three, Roman’s story, was set up and I look forward to reading it although I do hopes that it will be less magical and more medieval than this one was.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the copy of this book to read and review.

This is the 2nd in the Brotherhood of the Fallen Angels Series but can be read as a stand-alone. This book does veer off into the paranormal real and I was hoping for a bit more romance. However the story was really good and I really liked Adrian he endured so much. The story is fast paced and the chemistry between the hero and heroine is enjoyable. I liked it.

Welcome to Brigadoon!

Not quite, but almost. For those who have never seen the play or the movie, Brigadoon is the story of a group of American tourists who stumble over a magical village in the Scottish Highlands that only appears once a century, and vanishes back into the mists at the end of its single day in normal time.

The mystical kingdom of Wyldonna is equally magical, and also equally Scottish. However, it sounds like Wyldonna is set closer to the Orkney Islands than in the actual Highlands. Wyldonna is certainly an island off the coast of Scotland in this story.

Unlike Brigadoon, Wyldonna emerges from its concealing mists four times per year, on the equinoxes and the solstices. Also unlike Brigadoon, not all, even not most of its inhabitants are humans.

Adrian is also a “magic goes away” type story. In this version of Europe during the Crusades, all of the magic in the world is locked away on Wyldonna. And like the magical kingdom of the Tala in Jeffe Kennedy’s marvelous Twelve Kingdoms, only those from Wyldonna or accompanying someone from Wyldonna can find their way in. And also like the Tala, the complete separation of magic from the rest of world is resulting in difficulties on both sides of the equation. The lack of magic is harming the regular world, and the bottled up magic is too much for Wyldonna.

The crisis that is coming is brought by the villain of the Brotherhood of Fallen Angels series, Glayer Felsteppe, who in addition to having a horrible name seems to have more lives than a cat, and all of them misspent.

In the first book in this series, Valentine, we were introduced to the world of the Brotherhood of Fallen Angels, the mess they are in, and the lengths they will go to to clear their names of the stain of treason. They did not betray their fortress to the Saracens – that crime belongs to Felsteppe. He and his Saracen ally arranged for the fall of the fortress and the messages to Saladin and Richard the Lion-Hearted that the Brotherhood was responsible. The Brotherhood was not supposed to survive their subsequent torture by the Saracens, but then the best and worst laid plans often go astray.

In their exile, they have all been condemned as traitors. They are all cut off from the families and friends, except each other. They have all vowed to see their enemy’s head on pike, or otherwise separated from his body. So far, they have wounded the bastard, but he keeps surviving to hunt them another day.

In this second entry in the series, it is engineer Adrian Hailsworth’s turn to leave their sanctuary in the hopes of putting paid to Felsteppe’s account. A servant of the Queen of mythical Wyldonna comes to the Abbey asking for aid. The queen needs an engineer to search her castle for a mysterious treasure. A treasure that Felsteppe is planning to pick up, personally.

Adrian believes none of the stories of Wyldonna, and he doesn’t care. He is certain he can find any secrets that any building might be holding. And he’ll do anything for a chance at Felsteppe.

But while Adrian may not believe in the magic of Wyldonna, the magic believes in him. His coming was foretold, as was the death of the Queen who lied to him, lured him to her kingdom, and has come to love him above her own life.

Escape Rating B+: I enjoyed Adrian every bit as much as I did Valentine, but it is a completely different type of story. In Valentine, we have a mad romp across Europe, with the worldly hero and the sheltered heroine falling in love as they escape danger over and over. Valentine is forced to rescue Mary multiple times, both because he doesn’t tell her everything that’s going on and because Mary tends to rush in where angels fear to tread.

In Adrian, the situation is reversed. In Valentine, the journey was the point of the story. In Adrian, it’s the destination that matters. Also, where in Valentine he was constantly rescuing her, in Adrian it is the other way around. Because Adrian is a man of science, even 12th century science, he only believes in what he sees. He does not believe in the very real magic of Wyldonna, no matter how many times it hits him over the head. So, even though Maisie and her brother Malcolm repeatedly warn him not to do certain things or go certain places because of the magic, Adrian bull-headedly ignores them. Maisie, Malcolm and the giant caretaker Reid all end up pulling Adrian out of the frying pan that he has thrown himself into at one time or another.

Adrian’s visit to Wyldonna has been prophesied for centuries. Not him personally, but yes, him. After his torture by the Saracens, in his subsequent rescue Adrian got tattoos to cover all his scars. His extensive tattoos have transformed him into the “Painted Man” of Wyldonna legend, whether he believes it or not.

(It’s a telling point that the practitioner who gave Adrian his ink disappears after his job in the legend is done)

All in all, Adrian is a terrific magical adventure with a lovely twist of romance. The way that the author wove the magic of Wyldonna into the story added to my very willing suspension of disbelief. It’s the kind of magical mystery that the reader wants to be true.

A wonderful series I would say..
The variations the series has is a delight...
The first book with adventure and a little humour..
The second book is about magic..
The third about the hardships and fight to live..
The fourth about emotions..
An amazing work by the author..

Adrian started shortly after Valentine had ended. Maisie, the lady in waiting to the Queen of Wyldonna, is visiting Scotland desperate for help. Her kingdom is being threatened, and she believes, someone from the monastery can help her. With a common enemy, Adrian volunteers for the job hoping to get a chance for revenge. Their romance begins during their travel, and the adventure starts when he realizes that the myths about Wyldonna are true.

Grothaus took me by surprise by changing the genre of this series. Where Valentine was pure historical romance, Adrian is also historical, but with a splash of paranormal. The author had added a magical world full of mystical beings to the story. I had to check if I was reading the right book. I wish the blurb had given me a warning. Since reading Valentine, I had my expectations for this book..mainly for the genre to be the same. Obviously, my reading experience was altered as soon as the mystical beings started to appear.

As far as characters go, Adrian kept true to the Brotherhood persona. Edgy yet honorable and he came through for Maise and the people of Wyldonna...a warrior to the core. Maise, on the other hand, took longer to warm up to. She seems so unsure of who she is or what she wants for the kingdom and that created doubt for the townspeople and me as a reader. I just didn't like her as much. I will admit that Maise and Adrian’s story was enjoyable enough, and the world Grothaus had created was intriguing. She may have something here. If you’re looking for a historical/paranormal read, this may be the book for you. It’s best if it's read as a stand alone and that goes for the first book in this series, or at least, know what you're getting into.

Didn't finish after page 169. Even though I didn't finish, This book had a ton of great elements to it. The writing is really beautiful to me. It's very, very unique in many aspects. The characters and story line are completely original. I really like Adrian a lot. I love the way he handles himself, especially at the beginning where it's telling of his torturous situation. He even apologizes to his torturer at one point!! I just love that because it shows his unique character. And it showed that this author doesn't write what you'd expect. She's different. She thinks outside the box and thinks about what to put on a page to make it stand out and be interesting. The whole first chapter is awesome and interesting in its gruesomeness. So many authors tend to write such mundane situations and sugarcoat happenings in their books for some reason I can't understand. But in this story, right out of the gate you are pulled in with Adrian and his suffering. Now, this is not a light, easy read by any means. You have to read carefully in order to follow along and understand what the heck is going on. I love that the author didn't just explain everything all at once or "stop" the story for an explanation at every turn. Nope, she throws us into the story and we have to just hang on and figure out everything as it naturally happens, layer by layer. That shows a lot of skill. The only reason I stopped reading was because it did get just a little boring. I kinda just lost interest. I can't even put my finger on why that was because there are many positives about this book. I kind of felt like it had something to do with the fact that I could not feel any chemistry between Adrian and maisy. I liked them both just fine and they both had life and personality, but their relationship was just kind of missing that spark. The extra special something. But overall I bet this is a fine read if you have more patience than I do and aren't as focused on wanting the love story to carry you through the book.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

During battle Adrian and others have been caught by the enemy due to the greed for power of one. Adrian is severely beaten and drug by a horse. Everyday his friends tended him and reminded him to live. Eventually they had a chance to escape and have now been in an abbey for 2 years. The sad thing is, Adrian was not a soldier, he was a scholar......an architect who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was only defending himself.

A young woman Maisie comes to the abbey for help. She is the queens lady-in-waiting on Wyldonna, a small Island by Scotland. They all laugh at her at first because they say Wyldonna is just a fable, there is no such place. She then tells them about the common enemy they have and her goals. She needs help in finding a treasure that is hidden in the house and it is decided that Adrian will go since he builds houses.

Once they get to Wyldonna, Adrian finds out some of the facts are different than Maisie has told him and so their adventure begins.

I wasn't sure I would even finish this book but I did. I don't like to not finish a book. The book did get a bit better but I didn't think it was good enough for a better rating.

I did like Adrian once he got involved in Wyldonna. He got stronger, physically and mentally. They say it is the magic of the Island. I also like the inhabitants of the Island: elves, fairy's, sirens in the ocean, clove footed people.

I felt like the writing was good but the story itself wasn't. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them. She was very good about capturing the emotion of the characters but it wasn't enough for me.

Even though this book is second in a series, it can be read as a stand alone. The author has added elements of paranormal which I didn't expect. I have always enjoyed reading her books, but this one was a bit out there. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book, but not one with so much different than the first. I felt a bit upended when I started reading about a far away land called Wyldonna. It is suppose to be magical land near Scotland. I see where this is going and just couldn't get into it.
It begins when Maisie who is a lady in waiting to the Queen in Wyldonna, seeks help with an enemy. She is very persistent in doing her duty to her royal highness which involves seeking someone to help her. Maisie arrives at an abbey with all intents of finding a man, but they laugh at her and say there is no such place. She says her goal is to find the treasure hidden in the house. Since Adrian used to be an architect, he would know about building structure. He has been in a war where he almost died from wounds received there. His friends are concerned that he is just letting life pass him by and needs to concentrate on getting his mind straight. He has a lot of issues and finally agrees to go with Maisie. She is the first woman who has challenged him and feels sexually attracted to her. Adrian and Maisie are in for an adventure of a lifetime, and it begins when they reach the mythical land where all things are not as they seem. Fairy, elves and the like are intertwined with the romance that builds around the story.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.

Having really enjoyed Book 1 of this series, Valentine, I was pleased to receive a NetGalley ARC for Book 2, Adrian. Honestly, though, if not for mentioning Valentine, I never would have linked these two books together. As there was no mention of a mystical/magical kingdom in the book synopsis, I had no idea this was more of a fantasyland tale, complete with mythical creatures, than a typical historical romance. For the most part, that really wasn’t an issue until events started unfolding that involved what had happened in the past, present, and expected future (in both realms) which seemed to drag out longer than necessary. It all started to feel a little too complicated, so I found myself skipping pages to get to the end. Fortunately, I did this cautiously as there were some unexpected twists and turns near the very end.

So, my fellow romance book-loving friends, if you like a historical type romance that pretty much takes place in a magical kingdom only visible/accessible briefly four times a year, you might want to consider this one. It just wasn’t what I was expecting.

Title: Adrian, Series: The Brotherhood of Fallen Angels (Book 2), Author: Heather Grothaus, Pages: 252, stand-alone, HEA, mystic/magical kingdom theme, heroine had magical powers, only a few steamy scenes.

Book 1 – Valentine (Valentine & Mary), 6/23/15, Pages: 352
Book 2 – Adrian (Adrian & Maisie), 12/22/15

This review is really hard to write. I loved loved loved Valentine, it's possibly my fave historical romance ever.

Adrian's story picks up where Valentine's ends, but you don't need to read both. Actually I think you'd enjoy this a lot more if you read it solely as a stand alone. This is so different but part of a series that it kind of spoilt it for me.

This is not historical fiction, it's fantasy/paranormal which is one of my fave genres but I was expecting history not dragons, treasures, elves etc. it was just weird and didn't fit into the larger story of the four fallen warriors.

Valentine's dialogue sparkled and it was quite often laugh out loud funny, this was very contained. The cover is gorgeous but it helped put me off. The description of the painted man's tattoos seemed to be far more excessive. Something wasn't right, but wow is the cover beautiful.

I didn't care for Maisie, yes I should have. But she just didn't worm her way into my affections. I never understood her motivations from her travelling first time, to being with Adrian and her treatment of the king (trying not to offer spoilers)

On the upside as a stand alone PNR it's well written, it's fast paced and the world created was very rich - I could see a revisit to check in on Malcolm.

Thank you to net galley for an ARC in return for an honest view.

This is book two of Grothaus' Fallen Angel series.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one, Valentine. I agree with some of the other reviews in that this one had a paranormal/fantasy side to it that just isn't for me. I enjoy historical fiction without the bizarre twists. I unfairly view fantasy fiction as a crutch for an author who can't work within the parameters of real life. Yes, I know this is fiction but fantasy is a step beyond that.

In this book Adrian is called upon to help Maisies and her people from the magical island which cannot be seen by the rest of the world except for four days. Adrian main reason to go and help is to get a shot at Gayler. Nothing happens for the first 2/3 of the book and then the author gives us a "bollocks" ending by throwing everything at you.

I hope Grothaus gets back to good historical fiction without the element of fantasy with the next book which will feature Roman.

I liked the description of the book. I was so excited to read it. I started the book and got lost. What was I missing? The fact that this is the second book in series. I really felt like I missed out on a lot by not reading the first book. That being said I am not giving up on this book. I have purchased the first book in the series and plan on reading very soon. When I have finished the first book and reread Adrian I plan on updating my review for this book.

I just couldn't get into this book. It sounded so good and the cover pulled you in, but I just couldn't love it. It took me forever to read. I wanted to love it but just didn't. Not a bad story, but a bit too mystical for me. Adrian is a great character, tho -- deep, dark, beautiful but oh so needy. Still, I am looking forward to Roman's story this summer.
