An autistic love story. Incredible! This is such a funny and touching book. I laughed all the way through and also read huge portions aloud to my husband, who is not a reader, but is patiently indulgent. And he really laughed. Don's mannerisms and misconceptions about social behavior are understandable to the reader and funny and/or annoying to those around him. I highly recommend this book!
And congratulations to the author, who decided to write his first book at age 50. There's inspiration for all of us that good things are ahead!
I do NOT do romantic comedies, and I laughed and laughed -- out loud in my car, which is where I go through so many audio books -- Oh man. AND all set around an adult on a spectrum, succeeding in his field ... looking for a partner. What a pleasure. Planning on the other books by the author, especially if performed by the same reader ..
An incredibly easy and fun read. The writing was clever, poignant and sweet. I think I smiled through the entire book. This book reminds us to lose our preconceived notions and judgements about others based on outward appearances, and minimal information. Embracing the unconventional makes life far more interesting.
What a wonderful look into the mind, heart, and life of a brilliant man who is on the autism spectrum. Don Tillman is a lovable (once you get to know him) Genetics professor who desperately wants a life partner, a wife. He looks for the perfect partner for himself, but doesn’t really know what he wants or needs. This is a great romantic comedy that will have you laughing and also feeling uncomfortable and even embarrassed for Don during some of his wilder moments. I had trouble putting it down, but sometimes I had to step away from the book due to “emotional overload .” This was a truly great read. I am starting the sequel right away.
This was an enjoyable read. Very tongue in cheek kind of humor but entertaining and a bit predictable. While autism is not exactly a humorous subject, the author does make one think about the difficulties of the condition and how it affects others.
I enjoyed this book about an engineer who is Asperger's search for the perfect wife. It was especially interesting to me as I have a grandson on the Autism spectrum.
It's a light and captivating read. I devoured the whole thing over the course of one Sunday. But it left me feeling a bit unsettled. On one hand, the portrayal of Don was often sympathetic. The character was well-rounded: he had friends, interests, preferences, faults, a family, etc. He wasn't a Stock Asperger's Character. On the other hand, I found the changing-for-Rosie's-benefit part repulsive, and I'm weary of the scientist-with-autism trope. Also, as a person who is also wired differently, I found it suspicious how easy it was for Don to adapt his own behavior, and I think I was more relieved than Rosie toward the end when his old persona peeked through again.
While I'm happy that Don and Rosie ended up together, I was really thrown off-balance by the way it all wrapped up. Sure, he realized the truth about his own capacity for love, but he never seemed to explain all those details to Rosie. And a ring? Really? How about dating first? It felt rushed, perfunctory, not romantic.
However. Rosie obviously cares for Don, genuinely and without judgment. I loved her line about expecting lots of craziness to come. She did not need him to change! She just needed to know he valued her! Ugh.
I guess it's worth the read if it provoked this much contemplation. I'm halfway interested in the sequel.
Pretty hilarious book. A geeky professor makes a questionaire to find the perfect mate. "She will most definitely not be a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker or a late-arriver. Rosie is all these things. She is also fiery and intelligent, strangely beguiling, and looking for her biological father a search that a DNA expert might just be able to help her with." The romance of this unlikely couple leads to marriage. Good for a laugh out loud book
This book kept my attention although the plot is a little bizarre. The character development is very good and the overall message is that opposites can attract and that love comes in different forms is a great theme. I recommend it. I never would've read the book if not for a recommendation in my book club.
This was a book club selection. I just realized did not move it to read. That probably says something about the book. I finished it and some things were plausible, others not so much. My group was pretty much the same. A sequel is in the works but the characters were not interesting enough for me to continue reading another book about them and their lives. I would not recommend this book.
Cute as a movie script maybe, but writing is unclear especially at critical moments to the storyline. Failed to find the basis of the relationship between major characters- Don and Rosie - to be convincing, while Gene's infidelities appeared more caricature than contrast.
I had few expectations for this book but heard it recommended on a cbc radio program, bought it at Powell's and thoroughly enjoyed it. Breezed through it in no time but unlike other fast reads I'm not likely to forget it. Unique.
I liked the book, I thought the main character was interesting. Definitly some big bang theory vibes. Not so much focused on the romance as on the character development/his thought process. Little bits of humor here and there. It was a nice read but probably not one I would pick up again.
I found this a light and engaging story - the protagonist is a quirky professor who struggles to meet women and maintain relationships. Filled with humor (many moments had me laughing out loud) and insight, I found myself cheering for Don, and enjoyed the ride very much. Recommend!
One of the most challenging and deep characters I've ever met. The self talk gives a look inside the brain of those who are different. Many twists and unexpected turns. I loved it.
This book was laugh out loud funny --- and a bit sad. A nice easy, weekend read when you want to be entertained and yet don't mind learning that the quirks in others might just be what we love.
Wonderfully written love story. As you follow the main character in his search for a wife, you reflect on your own relationships. Just a delightful read.
It was so fun to read something DIFFERENT. Don Tillman is a fresh character like none I've read before. Loved reading his evolution and discovery. Really enjoyable book.
