Where the Bluebells Bloom: a prequel story to the Blue Ruin Society Ladies series

Rate this book
When life is horrid without hope, it’s time to change the status quo in whatever way possible…

The year is 1807 and Lady Angelica Coatesfield, Duchess of Tittleford, wishes she were anyone but who she is. Married to a duke isn’t everything wonderful the beau monde makes it out to be, especially when that duke holds little respect for her. Most days she dreams of escaping her gilded, hellish cage but knows she’s trapped. The only respite is seeing Mr. Marsden, her husband’s solicitor, during monthly visits. He’s a light in her dark world.

Mr. Caleb Marsden is proud of his position as solicitor to the Duke of Tittleford. However, it comes with one huge drawback—he’s been in love with the duchess for years. Though he’s aware of how horrible the duke treats his wife, there is naught he can do about it, so he maintains his silence on both fronts. Yet there is an undeniable connection between them he’d be a fool to continue ignoring. Should he risk all for a forbidden romance?

While the ducal couple is at their manor in the Surrey countryside, Caleb is invited to stay on for fishing and to keep the duchess company while the duke is away on business. He accepts; it’s the opportunity he’s waited for. While caught in a rainstorm, secret longings and hidden desires come into the light, and when they’re acted upon, there’s no going back for either of them. A future is planned where the bluebells bloom, but the likelihood of claiming it is dubious at best… unless fate intervenes.

…proving if there is a will, there might be a way even if it is under suspicious circumstances.

I'm not usually a fan of Prequels but this story definitely doesn't give the feeling of a prequel, it has a that fulfillment of what's to come for the entire series instead type of vibe. That's the thing I love love about Sandra Sookoo.

Angelica Coatesfield maybe a Duchess but she's also living in a gilded prison where the wrong move and she gets beaten belittle and it could become worse by the man who is the Duke, not all marriages are what they seem from the outside.. and no one can rescue her without putting her at risk. But she has a handsome solicitor to look forward to at least.. or maybe someday something more with that very solicitor.

Mr. Caleb Marsden is the fourth son of an Earl with no chance of the title and he is also in love with his employer's wife who is Duke and he knows that it's beyond dangerous to cross the line with her and he knows that if he does that he could lose his job possibly worse than that but he is willing to cross that line with her.. because she deserves to know not only know what true passion is but what true love and freedom is.

These two despite the circumstances, they not only weather the storm together but they stand beside each other through it all.. and they both find what it's like to be truly loved with each.

This story shows that not everything is about the regency era was all glitz and glamour, there were dark moments for women and many others alike.. even those amongst society's elite class..

It also had beautiful moments from a dance in the woods to a hug in a shed.. and a beautiful happily ever after!

I can't wait to read the first book in the Blue Ruins Society Ladies.

I definitely can't wait to read the next book from Sandra Sookoo.

I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the author. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

I have just about all of Sandra’s books. Each series has its own theme, but this one has a darkness to it one doesn’t usually find in her books. It was a surprise for sure, but as I keep reading, I understand why and where she was going with the plot. This book is a prequel to a new series that will give us a peck at what lies behind the bright lights and gowns of the ton. Lady Angelica Coatesford was given to Duke of Tittleford by her father when she was just nineteen; he was forty-one! Most young ladies of the ton dream of marrying a title gentleman during their coming out, Angelica could tell them it isn’t as wonderful as they think. After twenty years of pain and despair from the Dukes treatment of her. The only good thing coming from their marriage was her son and daughter. Angelica’s only bright spot is the monthly meeting of her husband’s solicitor, Mr. Caleb Marsden. He is a very handsome, nice man and if she is not mistaken, he has feelings for her just like she does for him. Neither have ever said or done anything over the years about it. Caleb Mardsen has been with the Duke for over twenty years and knows just how he treats his wife and wishes he could do more for her. He has helped her with what he can without anyone knowing. He has loved her for years and has never been able to show it. So, when the duke invites him to spend a month in the county to watch over his wife and make sure she stays home, he jumps at the chance. Mother nature helps our couple with a rainstorm and an empty cabin where secrets come out and what happens from here is the rest of the story and you need to rush and get it as its amazing. So much pain, women of the eighteen-hundreds had to live with. They were treated badly men and husbands. Most of the men saw then as property not as people. If the rest of the books in the series are half as good as this one, we can look forward to some great reading. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my long, but honest opinion and am freely giving it.

Where the Bluebells Bloom by Sandra Sookoo is the prequel to her Blue Ruin Society Ladies series, and it completely captivated me. The story centers on Duchess Angelica Coatesfield, trapped in a cold and loveless marriage to an unfaithful duke. Treated more like a possession than a partner, her quiet strength and enduring suffering are deeply moving. Her only true moments of joy come during the monthly visits from Mr. Caleb Marsden, the duke’s solicitor, whose kindness and steady presence bring light to her otherwise dark world.

As the story unfolds, long-suppressed feelings between Angelica and Caleb emerge, leading to a tender, forbidden romance. The stakes rise when her cruel husband returns unexpectedly, creating moments of suspense, heartbreak, and the thrilling hope of freedom. Sookoo masterfully balances the weight of abuse and isolation with the warmth and emotional release of genuine love.

The duke invites Caleb to go fishing, setting the stage for the climax. An argument erupts, followed by an accident and a moral quandary that forces Caleb to choose whether to take the high road. When the confrontation with the duke finally occurs, his actions are surprising, but his inner struggle—caught between honor and desire—feels authentic and poignant. The contrast between darkness and light—cruelty and compassion, confinement and release—is masterfully woven into every page. Through it all, Caleb’s unwavering bond with Angelica forms the emotional core of the story.

This prequel left me eager to explore the rest of the series. The story was captivating from start to finish, beautifully written and emotionally intense. It’s a moving journey that reminds us that even in the darkest circumstances, hope endures.

From the first page you get totally pulled into Angelica’s story. We find out how badly she’s been treated in her marriage to the duke, you just want to do something to get her some help, but in those days, these things were not talked about, no help was sent for those who knew about it.

But she does have a highlight of knowing the duke’s solicitor, Caleb. She dreams of things being different and having him at her side because he feels the same way about her.

While the story takes some dark turns showing us that not all roses and rainbows, especially for women during this time period, we also do get to see how something as simple as being caught in the rain can bring so much pleasure.

Sandra Sookoo knows her way around historical writing, she does her research which shows when reading her stories that took you there, you can see and you can feel as if you were in that era. Great way to start the series, I can’t wait to read about who else the Society will help out.

Mr Caleb Marsden has been secretly in love with the Duchess for over 20 years. He wanted to assist her pain but he acted in other ways that were in her best interest!
When their passion could no longer be denied they gave in to temptation but it’s hopeless ahe us stop married to a brutal monster.
But if she ever can get free Angelica knows that she will assist battered, ruined and mistreated women and call it the “Blue Ruin Society!”
Can fate intervene? Bravo

Lady Angelica Coatesfield, Duchess of Tittleford, has had enough of her husband’s abuse and being virtually invisible next to the Duke’s mistress. When Angelica stands up to her husband, and yearns for some compassion and care, who will step in? Mr. Caleb Marsden is a younger son and the Duke’s solicitor, who has been secretly in love with the Duchess for years. Steamy read filled with emotion, drama, secret longings, romance, and some physical and mental abuse. This is a prequel novella, to set up a new series, and I loved seeing Angelica stand up for herself and move toward independence and a desire to help others. Caleb is a wonderfully romantic and caring man, just what she needs. I would have liked a little more background on Caleb, but maybe that will be revealed as the series progresses.
I received a free copy via Booksprout, this review is my honest opinion.

What a way to start a new series!!! This book was so good I could not put it down and read it in one sitting. Sandra Sookoo is one of the best authors of today and she never disappoints. Where The Bluebells Blooms is a sad reminder of how women were abused and were owned by men back in the 1800s. The characters come alive and the writing is so good that it is so very visual in my mind. This story has an abuse Duchess for 20 years, loving someone for 20yrs, standing up for oneself, a bit of a coward, a scandalous affair, a solicitor, no friends, a mistress, a Duke that everyone hates, a romantic at heart, being drunk, lashing out, being treated like an angel and following your heart. This book is truly wonderful and I very highly recommend!!!

I was reading along and everything about Caleb and Angelica was sweet and nice and then wham, the darkness hits. Don’t misunderstand, what Angelica went through was horrific and the story took a turn I did not see coming and I was kind of shocked. Now, I have read a lot of Sandra’s darker books and I absolutely love them but this one threw me for a loop even though she states that they are on the darker side. I do like when I am surprised by a story which, honestly, I am rarely am shocked. Are you intrigued? You got me Sandra.

This prequel to the Blue Ruin Society Ladies series was a captivating forbidden friends tk lovers historical romance. It was full of drama, strong emotions, dark issues of emotional and physical abuse, and intense twists. The characters were well developed, and their steamy, passionate love was strong and enduring. I really enjoyed the satisfying ending and how well it sets up the next story. I highly recommend reading!
