Although she writes under the pen name J.K. Rowling, pronounced like rolling, her name when her first Harry Potter book was published was simply Joanne Rowling. Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers demanded that she use two initials, rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K as the second initial of her pen name, from her paternal grandmother Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. She calls herself Jo and has said, "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was young, unless they were angry." Following her marriage, she has sometimes used the name Joanne Murray when conducting personal business. During the Leveson Inquiry she gave evidence under the name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. In a 2012 interview, Rowling noted that she no longer cared that people pronounced her name incorrectly.

Rowling was born to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant), on 31 July 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Bristol. Her mother Anne was half-French and half-Scottish. Her parents first met on a train departing from King's Cross Station bound for Arbroath in 1964. They married on 14 March 1965. Her mother's maternal grandfather, Dugald Campbell, was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandfather, Louis Volant, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during the First World War.

Rowling's sister Dianne was born at their home when Rowling was 23 months old. The family moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when Rowling was four. She attended St Michael's Primary School, a school founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More. Her headmaster at St Michael's, Alfred Dunn, has been suggested as the inspiration for the Harry Potter headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories, which she would usually then read to her sister. She recalls that: "I can still remember me telling her a story in which she fell down a rabbit hole and was fed strawberries by the rabbit family inside it. Certainly the first story I ever wrote down (when I was five or six) was about a rabbit called Rabbit. He got the measles and was visited by his friends, including a giant bee called Miss Bee." At the age of nine, Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Chepstow, Wales. When she was a young teenager, her great aunt, who Rowling said "taught classics and approved of a thirst for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's autobiography, Hons and Rebels. Mitford became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling subsequently read all of her books.

Rowling has said of her teenage years, in an interview with The New Yorker, "I wasn’t particularly happy. I think it’s a dreadful time of life." She had a difficult homelife; her mother was ill and she had a difficult relationship with her father (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). She attended secondary school at Wyedean School and College, where her mother had worked as a technician in the science department. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me. She's a caricature of me when I was eleven, which I'm not particularly proud of." Steve Eddy, who taught Rowling English when she first arrived, remembers her as "not exceptional" but "one of a group of girls who were bright, and quite good at English." Sean Harris, her best friend in the Upper Sixth owned a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she says inspired the one in her books.

Was basically teary eyed on and off this entire book. What an ending to a fantastic series.

I loved how all the threads were finally connected in this final book. I’ve only watched the movies since my initial read 10 years ago and I forgot about all of the finer details that truly make this series exceptional. The plotting, the character development, the good v evil, Rowling is a mastermind.

The full cast audio is a true work of art. It’s setting the bar for craft and production in audiobooks going forward. If you know someone who has wanted to read this series but isn’t a reader, this is the answer. I can’t wait to reread it 🥹

Wow, just wow. It’s bittersweet to have finished the series but I’m also incredibly happy I dedicated the time to listen to them.
It’s a significant time investment but it was absolutely worth it. As with the films, I know I’ll listen to these again in the future – a true testament to the production quality.
I was able to enjoy this final book in the series whilst on holiday, my husband even listened with me. He was really impressed by how immersive it was. He kept thinking the owls hooting were outside 🦉
Harry, Ron and Hermione face their most perilous challenge yet: finding and destroying Voldemort’s horcruxes. The descriptions of their locations and tasks are so vivid and the narrators bring them to life so brilliantly.
I can’t say enough good things about the full cast experience. The narrators did an incredible job and the production required to bring it all together is simply remarkable. It’s an absolute work of art.

I mean, did we think it was going to be anything less than amazing? I cannot believe how much of Kreacher's story they cut out of the movies, and why did I think the battle was so much longer than it is at the end? I was feeling for the poor guy, and when he came out in defense of his MASTER at the end!!! Crushed. Plus Dobby's death, I simply couldn't hold back the tears.

You just have to wear headphones if you're going to listen to these audiobooks. At the end, when Voldemort and Harry are circling one another, I could hear their voices going from left to right in a circle. I also remember Voldemort's body basically disintegrating in the movies but they actually move his body in the book. Interesting tidbits that I forget after watching the movies over and over again.

Overall, such an immersive experience. This book is far better than anything they did in 2 movies.

Listening to the 7th book in this masterpiece of an Audio version wrecked me. This entire series on audible was everything I always wanted the movies to be.

If you are a Harry Potter fan, run don’t walk to go listen to these.

And if you’re not a HP fan, well maybe give them a shot anyway.

(P.S. Make sure to listen with headphones for the full 360degree audio experience as this is so so much more than an audiobook).

I am so sad this series is done for me! I so thoroughly enjoyed listening to this as my first set of audio books & loved reliving the books start to finish. Read the books as they came out with my young daughters, reread more than once since then and enjoyed the movies, but this was a whole new experience that I was completely engaged in during my commute the last 5 months. Just wonderfully done! Bravo!

✅ The entire new theatrical audio versions are a smash out of the park. Better than the films and I would argue that they are even better than stand alone reading of the book.

❌ The final book does have some writing conveniences that remind you the book is still predominantly a young adult novel.

✅ The audio really opens your eyes to the sloppy or rushed aspects of the film. This is such a better way to
Experience the story.

Every time I reread or relisten the Harry Potter series, I end up with a new favorite book. This time, it’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The Full Cast Audio Edition is absolutely wonderful. It’s a truly immersive experience, with an incredible cast, beautiful sound design, and the perfect atmosphere to bring the story to life.

A fantastic story, fantastic performances, amazing background effects, and a fantastic ending. Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for creating this unforgettable journey.

I have to admit, it was bittersweet listening to the final book of the series as I’ve enjoyed the audiobooks so much! All of them were fantastic, but I do think there was something special about this one.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ is the most serious book of the series, the one where things get real and Harry and the gang have to deal with a lot of upset and loss. I feel the audiobook dealt with that well, and the addition of music and sound effects during some of the emotional moments of the novel only added to those times. For example, it was hard not to tear up when Hedwig died as you really felt Harry’s heartache when she was killed. The sound of his gut wrenching scream and of the spell killing her made you feel like you were there and living through that moment. It was done well, and any other time we experienced a character’s death I felt those same devastating feelings. This really added to the experience of the book and was one of my favourite parts of it.

The level of danger was also made more intense via the sounds of the book and as a listener you honestly felt the same intensity as the golden trio as they fight to destroy the horcruxes. For example, the chapter where Ron needs to destroy the horcrux and is faced with all of his deepest insecurities felt so real and you couldn’t listen to it without feeling for Ron. As a reader I tended to never get Ron, but listening to the novel made me sympathise with him in a way I never thought I could.

As the series is now over, I want to take a moment to compliment the voice actors I particularly enjoyed. Nina Barker-Francis as Hermione was amazing (especially the scene where she is being tortured by Bellatrix), Matthew MacFadyen was a brilliant Voldemort, and Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore was on another level. All of these voice actors really did their characters justice and were well picked! While there weren’t many voice actors I didn’t like throughout, those three in particular stood out for me.

Overall, a perfect end to a magical edition of this series! I’m sad it’s over, but I’m glad I experienced it.

I can't say just how utterly obsessed and magical it has been to rediscover my love for this series. What with all the controversy around the author, I slowly over time, got distant from the series. But with the show upcoming and the Full Cast recordings I wanted to revisit the world. I feel like a part of me has is lost now that I am done with the stories, yes that's dramatic. But it was like reconnecting to a world and friends that I had been absent from for a decade.

These audiobooks have been like a perfect adaptation, even without a visual aspect it was as if I was experiencing the story anew. Yes I know they are a literal reading of the book. But with all the cast and sound effects and soft score the books came alive in my mind in such magnificent ways. Many times throughout the last two books, I found myself deeply emotional, happy and sad. I haven't cried this much experiencing the story. I'm still taken with just how incredibly well thought out this world and characters felt.

It's for every person individually to come to terms with what they feel of the author. This world means so much to me, that I am able to set aside the author and just live in the stories that means so much to me. What an utter shame that a story about love and understanding has a legacy of hate and misunderstanding around its author.

This should be called "Harry Potter and the too-many-depressing-things-happening-back-to-back" because the first 75% of this is nothing but one tragedy, bad decision, or setback after another. I mean, I had tried rereading this several years ago but had to stop due to how it made me feel at times - even already knowing how it would ultimately end.

That being said, this book really lends itself to the kind of audio experience these full cast recordings offer. There were a lot of action scenes that worked well when heard with sound effects and not just read. It was also nice to have the consistency of the same voice cast across the series. I've already commented on my thoughts on some of the voices and those opinions didn't change much here. I will note that Harry's voice was a touch more annoying by this book - particularly with how he emphasized certain words or phrases. It didn't seem natural in places and took me out of the story with thoughts of "Oh yeah, this is an actor reading lines."

Overall, I really enjoyed this adaptation of these books and would love to see more stories be presented in this way.

🎧 Finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows felt like closing a chapter of my own life.

I grew up reading this series, and revisiting it as an adult through the full-cast audiobook was an experience I didn't know I needed. It reminded me why I fell in love with reading in the first place.

Even knowing exactly what was coming, some moments still hit just as hard. Dobby's death broke my heart all over again, and the Battle of Hogwarts carried the same emotional weight I remembered from years ago. The losses, the sacrifices, and the courage of these characters still feel just as powerful.

What surprised me most was how differently I experienced the story as an adult. As a child, I saw the magic. As an adult, I saw the grief, the resilience, the friendships, and the incredible amount of love woven through every page. It's a story that grows with you, and I think that's part of what makes it timeless.

Finishing this series again didn't just make me nostalgic—it reminded me why stories matter and why I've always loved getting lost in books.

Thank you, Harry, for one more adventure. Always.

NOTE: a donation to TransActual UK was made upon downloading this audiobook

Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable.

I didn’t think there was a new level of emotional devastation this series could unlock for me considering it’s already my favourite series of all time, but this full cast audio series managed it 😭

I grew up with these books, my dad read them to me as a kid, they are SO deeply ingrained into who I am as a reader that I thought I knew them inside out already. Apparently not because this audiobook had me sobbing like I was experiencing these deaths for the first time all over again 💀

Something about hearing everything properly acted out - the music, the performances, the atmosphere, the emotion in certain scenes, just completely elevates the story into something else entirely.

Although the author’s views differ massively from my own, this series still means the absolute world to me. It shaped my childhood and my love of reading, and getting to experience it in this format felt really magical.

Absolutely incredible. Destroyed me emotionally. 5 stars forever ⚡️

I overall love these narrations. I’m not going to review the actual book as I’ve done that on the regular listings but I had the opportunity to read the entire multicast series without contributing to the authors wealth so I took the opportunity.

Out of all of them I think it did the best job being cinematic in it’s presentation whilst still maintaining being an audiobook

The only thing that I don’t like is the background sounds. I feel that it takes away from the production. These are not quite a dramatic audio, thankfully, but similarly it has the various sound effects along the way. Some are done and punctuate the action but the crowd noise is downright obnoxious and annoying.

While I’ll always be a Stephen Fry girlie. These were a nice production. Too bad the author is such an ass hat of an individual.

All was well.
Still such a great ending.

This is one of my favorite books in the series, mostly because its a conclusion worthy of all the time and tears I've poured into the pages.

It starts off with a bang, and then proceeds to be balls to the wall until the grand finale. Sure, there are some down times, but those are seeping with thoughtful contemplation and a raw dynamic between the main three. It feels absolutely real, the doubts, the tensions, the dreaded feeling of the unknown.

So many plot lines wrap up with this, and Rowling adds a neat little bow that no one else could. She never misses. What a phenomenal author.

I'll never have a series come around that can touch the level emotions Rowling has provoked in me.

Its been an honor reliving the magic through a different lense.

“The last words Albus Dumbledore spoke to the pair of us?'
‘Harry is the best hope we have. Trust him.”

“It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.”

“He must have known I'd want to leave you."
"No, he must have known you would always want to come back.”

“Tell me one last thing,” said Harry. “Is this real? Or has this been happening inside my head?”
Dumbledore beamed at him, and his voice sounded loud and strong in Harry’s ears even though the bright mist was descending again, obscuring his figure.
“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”

Ok I'm rating this a 5 because of how well the audio book is but truthfully this is my least fave HP book.

First of all. Why all the needless death? Hedwig, Dobby & Fred. Like seriously they could have picked different characters to kill off. Hedwigs death was so senseless and careless it made me want to discontinue the book.

Also where are Crookshanks and Pigwidgen? They're just never mentioned again.

All this lead up to Voldemorts death just for it to be over in a minute which never really made sense to me but I do appreciate it all circling back to Hogwarts.

Lastly. The names of Ginny & Harry's children, not one of them was named after Fred but rather BOTH of Harry's parents and Harry's greatest mentor.

Oh AND never a mention again of Harry becoming an aura, but I always thought he would be headmaster.

Anyways. When I re read now I remember why I exclude this one.

I’m so sad to see this series finished again 🥺 I loved ever since second of it and have just felt pure nostalgia for the world and the characters. I know I’ll come back and reread this series again sometime in the future and fall in love with it all over again 😌

Seeing this little group of wizards and witches grow and become the literal saviours of their world was so special. We had our ups and severe downs but it all worked out in the end ☺️ The epilogue is what I expect to see in every book I read. A clear ending of the series and seeing the characters happy again later in life and most of all flourishing!

Until next time Harry Potter xx

This whole full cast edition version on audible was a masterpiece. It was everything I wanted from the movies and more. It was so so soooo good. If you’re a HP fan I say run, don’t walk and listen to it asap. I’m sad it’s all over. The delayed releases was something I looked forward to every month. I didn’t think I’d get emotional listening to it all but I definitely cried a handful of times. Highly recommend you give it all a listen. You won’t regret it. Probably will be re-listening to the entire thing from start to finish again and again. 🪄mischief managed

Everyone brings their best here, and having one last line from (almost) all of the amazing voice actors is a treat. It has very much nailed this adaptation of the books, at this stage, as being my favorite of it, surpassing the movies (with the "older" cast compensating, with prejudice, the shortcomings of the cast for the younger versions of the characters). I thoroughly recommend this one and the rest.

These will always be my favorite books. I really did enjoy the fully dramatized adaptation and will likely listen to them again in the future. Nothing beats physically reading them, but this is a close second. I loved hearing the various actors portray the characters and bring them to life. Most of the casting was such pure genius. A huge bravo to Matthew MacFadyen as Voldemort. How he makes such a lovely Mr. Darcy AND a cruel Voldemort is beyond me…nothing short of…well *magic*

Oh my, I have to say that I am actually sad again to be at the end. The cast did a phenomenal job with this project, and I am so happy that Amazon made this. The final book and the most intense of the series. I remember my first read - 12 hours straight, my second read followed 2 weeks later where I took my time to absorb every detail.

The experience of listening to these full cast adaptations has been akin to my first readings of the books. It is really a whole new experience.

Which is why I waited for book 7 like I did back then.

I felt the terror, I felt my heart hitch, I held my breath and I hurt when we lost old friends. Yes, I was in the book, I lived it along side Harry and felt him change from scared teenager to brave warrior who walked into the forest with conviction.

If you are a Potter fan, you have to give the series a listen. If you aren’t a Potter fan, these will convert you.

Because they are word for word, there is no loss, but just a wonderful way to give a wholesome experience to our own imagination.

Now, once again, I am left feeling lost because the series has come to an end. I can’t wait to listen to them all over again.
