All his life Brendan has dreamed of finding a super-hero of a boyfriend; big, strong, bold, right off the pages of a comic book. His new neighbor Kerry is the opposite of big and brawny yet Brendan finds himself intrigued. A series of phone calls he shouldn't have overheard has him actively trying to engage the smaller man, wanting to know more about him... and the more he learns, the more Brendan comes to realize what actually makes a hero. As the two become friends and then something more, Brendan learns that strength can come in the most unlikely package and that even he has reserves of inner strength he never thought were there.
This is a sweet, inspirational story with a low heat level about trust, love, and what true family really is. Approximately 30k words.
A. Russo is an applications developer by day, romance writer by night (and on breaks, and in the evenings, and sometimes during work when the important people aren't watching). Genderfluid and proud of it, the author can frequently be found in girl-mode, boy-mode, or somewhere-inbetween-mode, essentially becoming the equivalent of a gender-transformer - without the cool accompanying mechanical noise. We are still working on that technology. When not writing, our hero-slash-heroine enjoys horseback riding, cooking, and daydreaming about what to write next.
This was just wonderful. What a feel-good story. Although Kerry is introduced in book 1, you can read this as a stand-alone.
Brendan is a small, somewhat swishy guy, and he has always been attracted to big, muscular men. That’s why he is very surprised when he finds himself attracted to the smaller, even twinkier guy living in the next door apartment. But he feels all his protective instincts roaring to the surface when he overhears some phone calls his neighbor makes with his awful parents.
“Maybe the weekend after Thanksgiving I could come home and visit?” A long pause. I could actually hear the chatter on the other end of the line. “Wow, Julie’s gone to a lot of horse shows lately. I could come watch this one. Support her from the crowd.” A long sigh told me that had been declined too. “I’m kind of homesick, mom. You guys couldn’t just swing by and say hi after Julie’s… oh. Yeah I know it’ll be a long day. Yeah. She’ll be pretty tired. Uh-huh.”
So Brendan just knows he wants to meet his neighbor and become friends, and hopefully something more..
I loved how this story didn’t revolve around a twink and his big muscular protector. I loved that Brendan and Kerry protected and helped each other, and fell in love despite not being each other’s type normally. They were both so sweet together.
And I have to mention Brendan’s relationship with his adopted mother. Brendan’s entire family was awesome, but I just adored his mom.
“Mom, would I make someone a good prison bitch?”
(..)
“Oh, honey. I’m sure there’s a nice big brute of a man in County Penitential who’s just waiting to tattoo his name on your ass.”
There wasn’t a lot of steam in this one, but more than in the first book.
Absolutely recommended if you want something sweet with no relationship angst and a great deal of lovely hurt/comfort.
I really liked this story. The blurb is acurate. The book is told from Brendans POV. The MC's are sweet and adorable and very lovable. The writing is fluid and the characters are consistent. I' m rating this a five star read, because I've got nothing to criticize. I usually like to read longer books, because there is more time for me as a reader to connect with the characters and more time for the writer to develop the characters, but the author did that very well and I was able to feel "with" Kerry and Brendan quickly. I would describe this as a lighter read with a hurt/comfort-theme. Parts of the story made me very sad and angry ( Kerry's family) and parts made me smile and laugh ( the conversation between Brendan and his mother). And I really liked the interactions between the two MC's. The relationship develops slowly and for those two it's the right speed. The story has a HEA ending.
I hope the author continues tho publish and when that happens - I will read it! Maybe about the other members of Brendans family? Speaking of Brendans family: I really hope that families like that one are around in the real world.
FYI: the story is available as a Kindle unlimited download.
I loved this book even better than the first one. They're connected but they're totally stand alones, the first couple is mentioned a few times but they're not on page. I just wanted to hug and squeeze Kerry he was such a sweetheart and he was just waiting for Brendan even though he didn't realize it at the time. What can I say about Brendan, only that he was such a great guy and so patient with Kerry. Just sweet both of them and Brendan's family was great. This was just an all around sweet book...
Oh!! Another gentle romance. I really like both Kerry and Brendan. Seeing things from Brendan’s POV was lovely because he’s so funny! The conversations he has with his mother are priceless. Such a funny guy 😂
And Kerry seems more delicate. His family is just awful, especially his mother. I’d definitely do a Brendan and smack her, right after politely greeting her, followed by an immediate goodbye and a warning never to call again. Good thing she never actually shows up in the book!
Anyways, love the gentle romance and the funny dialogues and adorable characters. Love it!!
This was so sweet. Kerry was just adorable! I wanted to put him in my pocket! And Brendan was funny and was so sweet towards Kerry. I also loved Kerry's little secret. All in all, this was a very sweet story!
It started a bit off for me because I got bothered by Brendan's obsession towards Kerry but the story eventually subsided into neutral zone when Brendan became the sweet, caring and protective guy and Kerry - gaaahhh - just too precious for words... and the humor eventually hit the spot...
This is one of those books for eezy-breezy reading...
I loved Kerry and i might have liked Brendan as a character, but I really disliked him as a narrator. Or rather I disliked the style of the book where everything was described instead of being shown. A particular pet peeve of mine was present all throughout the book and I think my dislike for Brendan came from there. He kept saying"blah, blah, blah happened... I love that my family is so hilarious." Now, there was nothing hilarious about blah, blah, blah, creating a huge disconnect for me with the narrator, because if he feels such ridiculous stuff is hilarious then how can his judgement be trusted?
That said, I adored Kerry, that sweet little snowflake and I'm sure I would have rather been inside his head...
This had some good characters and at first it was really fun and good, but...it became a pain with the narration. I really didn't enjoy the style it was written in and then it seemed like there really wasn't a..."roadblock" for the men on the way to romance. I KNOW the author tried with Kerry and his shyness and fear of rejection but it really didn't work for me. Still it was good and I have hope that the second book is better.
A really sweet romance with two MCs who appealed to me on a lot of different levels. We learn about the MCs throughout the book and they are not just cardboard cutouts. Both have very different backgrounds, families, issues and life experiences. I really enjoyed this excerpt from their lives and look forward to Someone's Secret.
