Thomas W. Hilgers, MD, is the founder and director of the Pope Paul VI Institute for the Study of Human Reproduction (located in Omaha, Nebraska and home of its National Center for Women’s Health), where he is also the senior medical consultant in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine and surgery. Dr. Hilgers is a clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Creighton University School of Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1976) and the American Board of Laser Surgery (1988) and is a member of the prestigious Society of Reproductive Surgeons. Dr. Hilgers has served on the Pontifical Council for the Family and is an active member of the Pontifical Academy for Life. He has written over 200 professional books, book chapters and research articles (mostly in the areas of reproductive medicine and surgery) and he has produced videotapes, poster sessions and audio recordings. Since the time of his first research in the natural regulation of human fertility in 1968 as a senior medical student, he co-developed the Creighton Model FertilityCareTM System, along with K. Diane Daly, RN, CFCE; Susan K. Hilgers, BA, CFCE; and Ann M. Prebil, RN, BSN, CFCE. Dr. Hilgers ongoing research on the Creighton Model System enabled him to develop the new women’s health science of NaProTechnology.
An excellent discovery! This system, developed by Thomas Hilgers, is (unfortunately) still quite unknown outside the U.S and is difficult to find instructors. This useful handbook gives great insights on women's health and fertility and is key to learn the Creighton model (used for natural family planning). This model, which is effective, natural and without secondary effects can be used for both avoiding pregnancy, achieving pregnancy or just for fertility tracking. It introduces as well to NaProTechnology (which is part of the FertilityCare system): a medical science to restore, monitor and maintain a woman's reproductive and gynecological health. Definitely, useful during all life stages of women.
Four stars because the book itself needs a thorough copy edit. It’s distracting to read when there are 4-5 fonts in each sentence, hyphens are misplaced, and words are half bolded.
The content is fantastic! A little repetitive, but that only reinforces the key concepts. This book is intended to be used alongside the practice of charting and regularly meeting with a practitioner. I wish all women had exposure to the Creighton model of charting early on in their menstrual cycles, because it’s so important to have a scientific understanding of our individual bodies and how they function.
God built women’s bodies and their cycles so beautifully. The ongoing research in this field of fertility is amazing, responsible, and pro-woman. I can’t wait to see what else is discovered!
