Michael D.A. Clarke believes that by adding in his initials and speaking in the third-person, he may come across as a real writer. In reality, he's not quite sure if he is a real writer as he has only written a few books. I mean, he did write them - so, by definition he's definitely a real writer, right? The question should be, "Is he a good writer?" That's for you to decide. But take comfort in knowing that Michael D.A. Clarke has been writing words since he was just 5 years old and has written many words since then.

As always, Michael delivered another great read. I had such a fun time with Get 20% Off Your First Demon This Halloween and really enjoyed the premise behind the demons, especially getting to learn more about their pasts and how they ended up at Corpse Corp. I won’t lie — I could definitely use their hotline number myself.

This one gave me major Beetlejuice vibes in the best possible way, which I absolutely loved, while still managing to be unsettling and genuinely horrifying at times. It had such a fun balance of dark humor, creepy atmosphere, and horror, which made it a really entertaining read from start to finish.

Thank you to Michael for the free copy — I’m so glad I got the chance to read this one. I’m already looking forward to continuing this story and seeing what comes next.

It's dark, it's funny, and a lot of men get punished. Some of them, I think, are going to be pushed to grow up as well.

A horror novella that goes between a few perspectives - a battered wife who has had enough, a group of friends encountering emotional upheaval and trauma, and a zombie with one last flicker of humanity left that is love for his girlfriend. All of them are wrapped up in hits being carried out by monsters.

We see the origin stories of all the monsters eventually, and you can't help but cheer for them as they carry out what they were hired to do, even as it is gruesome and gory.

The novella ends on a cliffhanger, and definitely had me intrigued to read the next book when it comes out.

A solid, well written, horror book
I adored the opening and the concept of a group of psychos who’s organization finds those who needs it most.
If the story had stuck with Helen and the array of monsters/demons that she was looking to hire this would have been a five star for me. I LOVED the school teacher and zombie specifically!

Sadly, I did not enjoy the elements surrounding a group of teenagers going to a house party (which was an excuse for attempted sexual assault and creepy behaviour), this area drew attention to rather weak one-dimensional characters

I can’t stress how much I loved both the opening, the teacher, and the introduction of the zombie! Those elements were a 10/10!

A new favourite!! I loved this book and it was such a fun and unique read. The book had me invested from the blurb to the last page. I really enjoyed how we got the backstories of the Corpse Corp killers, almost like short stories woven throughout but still connected to the bigger picture. The humour/comedy was brilliant, I wasn’t expecting to laugh out loud so much. My favourite part was Cara, Simon and Chris getting those beers from the off-licence.

This was the first book I read from the author but it definitely won’t be my last. I highly recommend this book to any horror lovers. A quick and wildly entertaining read. Now, can someone help me get Bob Marley’s Everything’s Gonna Be Alright out of my head?

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Get 40% Off Your First Demon This Halloween was a really fun read that struck a nice balance between horror and humour. The concept is quirky and original, and I enjoyed how it leaned into the absurd while still delivering some genuinely creepy moments.

The humour never completely undercut the horror, which can be a tricky balance to get right. Instead, the two complemented each other well, making it an entertaining and engaging story from start to finish. There were plenty of moments that made me smile alongside the darker, unsettling scenes.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read with an entertaining premise and a great mix of laughs and scares. I’d happily pick up more from Michael D. A. Clark in the future.

I really enjoyed this one. It’s a fast-paced, entertaining read with a strong story centered around abuse, survival, and revenge. The author does a great job connecting the different storylines and bringing everything together by the end. The premise was interesting and executed well, making it hard to put down. If the sequel is anything like this one, I’m excited to continue the series.

This book was so ridiculously addicting to read. Once I started, I had such a hard time putting it down!

The story follows two different storylines. My favorite follows Helen, a woman trapped in an abusive marriage, as she visits Corpse Corp Limited to choose a demon. I was completely invested in her story. Clarke gives us so much fascinating background on the demons and monsters, and I loved watching Helen’s journey unfold. Her character arc was easily the highlight of the book for me, and I thought her ending was incredibly satisfying.

The second storyline follows a group of teenagers on their way to a party. Along the way, they encounter two of the monsters introduced in Helen’s storyline, and I thought Clarke did a great job weaving the two narratives together. After reading the bonus chapter, it seems like the teens’ story is really just setting the stage for book two, which made me even more excited to continue the series.

I also loved Clarke’s writing style. It was so engaging and easy to fly through, and every chapter kept me wanting to just keep reading.

I’ll definitely be picking up book two because I absolutely need to know what the deal is with that creepy ass mime. That thing is going to haunt my nightmares 😫

review of copy received from the author !
I had so much fun reading this book! I knew it was something I would be interested in, so I decided to jump right into it once Michael approached me.
The concept of the story itself was interesting, and I really enjoyed the demons having their own unique backstories. Their stories really reminded me of those Scary Stories books I inhaled as a kid, and I loved that it felt nostalgic for me. It also gave the demons depth and helped the readers understand their reasons for wanting to kill people instead of it just being because they are demons.
While I was invested in Helen’s story and the decisions she would make, I was less interested in the perspective of the group of teenagers we also followed as the readers. If their place in everything was a bit further developed I think it would have helped me along, but they felt slightly too disconnected from the rest of the stories. I just didn’t get a chance to feel like I knew them as characters.
Overall, I loved the way that everything connects in this book. I’m such a sucker for overlapping storylines, and this one definitely hooked me. The humor was also great and fit perfectly into the writing style. I would for sure read this again and recommend it as a light and spooky read !

This is the first book I’ve read by Michael D. A. Clarke, but it definitely won’t be the last. Get 20% Off Your First Demon This Halloween was a great read for a summer night.

The story begins with a disturbing domestic abuse scene, where a battered and broken Helen Taylor realizes the violence is getting worse and that this time, she may die. Then she is given a chance for justice, a chance to stop him. Would you take it, no matter the cost? Would you stop them from hurting anyone ever again?

Welcome to Corpse Corp Limited.

This story will be triggering for some and entertaining for others. There are characters who will make you laugh and others who will make you scream.
The details are gory, and the plot flows from one psychopath to another.
It is a short book, so it’s a quick read, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

Was hooked from the first page of this book… Loads of grisly fun.

We start out by meeting Helen who is a victim of her violent husband when she sees an advert offering her help with her situation.

This book is great fun for anyone who likes to see a bad guy get his comeuppance. If you like Dexter or the sweet pea series this is for you!
Just think a slightly darker version of Rentaghost 😆

There’s even a Tenacious D reference! What more do I need to say?

This was a fun little twisted story that was absolutely zany.

The overall idea of shopping for a demon as a hitman started out so funny to me but then when the creatures were introduced it became an absolute nightmare because uhhhhhhh no thanks!! (Mainly looking at you Mr Bondly)

I also really really liked how much variation we had for each monster (plus their origins) & the fact they had their own niches to make them uniquely terrifying is just 🤌🏽🤌🏽

Also i think Tariq was lowkey my favorite because of the emotional complexity with their development but also because he seemed like such a sweetheart, even when he was taking chunks out of people 😂😂

My oooooooonly con is that I feel like the ending was a bit rushed & we missed out on a few things smoothly tying together with everyone’s story.

Honorable mentions:
-The poem 😜
-Ginger pubes
-Lady & the tramp but it’s not spaghetti they’re sharing
-Foreskin mask
-Callout to murder Santa

Equal parts interesting, creepy, and funny. The concept is super cool and the cast of characters quite the bunch! Mr. Bondly….I get it dude (being a teacher myself), but boy howdy did he go too far! Tariq was an outstanding character as was Becky…added to the story a little heartbreak and emotion. Overall, one hell of a ride! I’m eagerly awaiting part two!

Such a fun, dark read. I enjoyed the dark humor mixed with the twisted minds of each character.

The story starts with Helen who is lying on the floor of a motel room bleeding. Then an advertisement comes on the tv and it’s as if they are speaking to her. “Call us now-and let’s make your nightmares someone else’s reality.”

I know there have been moments in my life where I would have definitely used Corpse Corp lol

We learn each psycho’s background and how they came to be. Each one brought their own horror all while still being relatable to me.

If you like twisted humor with some classic horror/ gore elements, read this now!

Solid 4 stars for originality! I couldn’t help but think of Beetlejuice during parts of it (and I mean this in the best way possible because who doesn’t love Beetlejuice?!)

I was MUCH more interested in Helen’s journey through Corpse Corp and the backstories of the “psychos” than the storyline with the teens and the mime.

If you are a horror story fan, this one is a fun and quick read - it’s on Kindle Unlimited and I finished it in under two hours. I’ll be waiting for part 2!

Warning: Spiders at 32% 🙈
This was a quick read, but it was because I couldn’t wait to learn about the next demon. Super fun! I enjoyed reading about Helen’s revenge and felt like I was on a shopping spree with her while choosing her demons. Such a unique reading experience and a much needed fresh breath in the horror space. This leans more toward splatter-horror as well, but I’m here for it!

Beetlejuice meets Shaun of the Dead, with a touch of The League of Gentlemen. This is dark and surreal horror comedy.

Corpse Corp Ltd have their marketing strategy on point. Their adverts appear only when you really are in need of their services. A quick Scream….Wasssuuup and Marian will guide you through the extensive contractors who will right the wrongs inflicted upon you. And with 20% off too!

The backstories of the demons for hire are really engaging: Tariq being a stand out favourite - his shopping excursion and his flirtatious encounter at the party were very funny (I think I might have dated him, actually!). Once hired, the demons are ruthlessly efficient and their prey deserved every minute of it.

The one element I wanted more of was The Mime (they are creepy as hell at the best of times) but the sneaky peak at the next book tells me that I should really be careful what I wish for. The opening of book 2 is so strong, and I couldn’t help immediately thinking of the Legz Akimbo theatre company from The League of Gentlemen. While I should probably be concerned with the plight of the teenagers, I’m definitely more invested in the demons.

At the request of the author, I was invited to read this for an honest review, and I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I liked how it was a bit of a journey through almost a "shopping mall" concept, with each demon having their own story and Marion, our concierge of sorts, introducing and cataloging them as possible "solutions" to Helen's problem (an abusive husband).

I guess my only complaint is that I wanted a bit more of Helen, our main protagonist. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved seeing Trevor get what was coming to him, but I felt a bit unfulfilled when it came to Helen's actual background with him. It felt a bit surface-level.

Having said that, the background stories of the demons were much more interesting. I felt a bit icky in points because I thought to myself that their "victims" kinda deserved it!!! Okay, okay, I know that is supposed to be the point ... at least I think it was. Geez, I hope it was!!! LOL

And to anyone else that reads this ... read the bonus material!!! Don't skip it!

4.5/5⭐

I went into this novel with zero expectations and ended up having a freaking good time! 👀

The story is super original, and the underlying female rage and social commentary are so well executed—it gives the book so much more depth.👏

Let’s be real: we’ve all had a moment where we’d gladly hire a psycho to fix our problems if given the chance, right? Or is it just me? 😂

I absolutely loved the selection process Helen goes through. Getting a detailed backstory for every single psycho she gets presented was brilliant.
Execution = perfect! ✨

My first book by Michael D.A. Clarke and it did not disappoint. I went from heart pounding out my chest to laughing out loud. Fun and fast-paced, I read it start to finish in one sitting.
I absolutely loved the whole concept. "Psychos and monsters" as hitmen! Yes!
I loved Tariq's complexity, Becky's lust for vengeance (maybe not the foreskin mask 🤢), and Mr. Bondly was a terror. All the back stories for each were great. The mime creeps me the hell out. Poor Chris. Helen deserves so much more than that horrid husband. Good for her.
I'll just be here patiently waiting on book two. (After I check out the author's other books)

This is my first book by this author and honestly I’m here for it. This really had the vibe of Beetlejuice and Trick-R-Treat had a mash up. I love the idea of a corporation in the afterlife reaching out to those in need and bringing justice for them. Each that story got introduced kept my attention and really brought out the Trick-R-Treat style and feel and flowed together to create one bigger story really well. The horror was great, the humor was there and I’m ready for part 2. I’m really glad I picked up this book and will definitely be checking out more of this authors work.

Despite a couple of hilarious scenes (one with a zombie sent to buy booze, the other with a chatterbox driving people to unaliving themselves), I wouldn't brand this as horror comedy: the way certain prevalent themes were handled (SA of underage girls, teen sex without consent, brutal domestic abuse, and disturbing student aggression towards teachers in class) didn't feel all that funny to me. Still, I did appreciate the author's message of taking a stand against toxic masculinity and gender-based violence.

In this book, men are the bad guys (violent, abusive, or just cowards), and women the victims (even when they fight back). Corpse Corp Limited offers ways to put things right: choose a supernatural entity from their catalogue, and it'll sort you out for the right amount of financial compensation. You got an abusive husband who you can't leave? Hire a vampire and he'll bleed him dry (literally). A bully at school making your life hell? Get a zombie and your bully will get properly chewed out for his behavior (again, literally!). The premise is interesting, and the author throws a few surprises too as the story develops: my favorite was the brilliant zombie tale unfolding right as the main parts of the story converge to a haunting climax.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, the second part is in the works, and a sneak peak is also included (plus, a very much appreciated bonus ending!). But the writing style gave me some trouble: the pacing is relentless, sustained by short, bullet-sized sentences usually coming in threes, dialogue has no significant differentiation of voice or mood, and there's an emotionally flat tone throughout. Perhaps this is why the comedy went right past me, though I loved the unusual narrative structure of the book: two separate stories blending together non-linearly, sometimes running in parallel, sometimes nominally crossing, and unexpectedly throwing light on common characters and the supernatural entities on offer as well.

I'd recommend this one to readers who like monster stories and revenge tales, and who can handle cheeky dark humor when dealing with rather sensitive and serious issues of contemporary interest.

What if you are mistreated, belittled, humiliated, and faced physical and emotional abuse for years, and finally you make the decision to stand for yourself? But what if you tackle these monsters in human guise, with monsters who are termed monsters by society...

Welcome to Corpse Corp Limited... The revolutionary new service for anyone tired of waiting for justice to come knocking!

The story starts with Helen Taylor, who is a victim of intense post-marital abuse and lying beaten in a lonely motel room, bloody and broken both physically and emotionally. Then, all of a sudden, an advert on the telly says that they can give you justice and set you free from all the torment, and also offer a 20 percent discount on your first order. And what's the instrument of this justice, you ask?

Well, you get to choose a monster of your choice to deal with your problems. And enter enigmatic Marian Hawkes, the owner of the Corpse Corp. And her fantastical and unorthodox offer to make your life better and, most importantly, beat a monster with another monster.

The story is pretty unique. The story plays out on Halloween Night, and while the entire town of Harrow is either trick-or-treating or getting decadently wasted at a Halloween party, Helen musters up enough courage to go visit the Corp and see what they can offer. The story also talks about certain other characters and how they are pivotal to the main story, in a very non-linear but fresh kind of storytelling. The author Michael DA Clarke has mixed horror and dark comedy in a brilliant kind of way. The story is so gripping and intriguing that you wouldn't even know when it's over, leaving you at a cliffhanger, wanting more. And yes, it also has a second part coming out soon.

All in all... It's a 5 on 5 read for me. If you like a Halloweenie-vibe spooky story, this is your must-read.

I received a copy of this book from the author and can only say “wow”! This is the first book I have read by him and it certainly won’t be the last. The style is a bit reminiscent of the movie Trick R Treat and for some reason the movie Thirteen Ghosts. I read it in one day and want to read part 2 now, but have to wait for it to be published. If you like horror comedies with a bit of revenge in the plot, you will love this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The number appears when you most need it and Helen needs it. Suffering from the after math of her husbands abuse, she calls Corpse Corps Unlimited. They offer the service of the craziest psychos to exact violent karma. What follows is a fantastic interwoven story of horrors unimaginable.

What I liked:
* love the story telling and the interwoven plot lines. We follow a central plot line of Helen but then we get little glimpses into other people’s lives
* Fun Easter eggs of classic horror elements such as creepy dolls, vampires, exorcisms, and more
* The mini scary stories scattered throughout the book are horrifying. There’s nightmares you wouldn’t even think of till now. The mime one is a new nightmare I didn’t know I had
* I love the way the story moves and how everything is connected. It almost felt like watching a scary movie, the images were so vivid
* the concept is so fun but satisfying where you can buy a demon to get revenge and justice in your most needed time
* there’s so many types of horrors to experience in such a short book. You have the tradition halloween scary but then you have the real life scary things that can happen to people
* I loved the ending and can’t wait for the next book

What I didn’t like:
* honestly nothing

The criteria for a five star read is if I would reread it, and I definitely would. There’s so much packed into this one book, and I feel like you can pick up on something different each time.

Get 20% Off Your First Demon This Halloween was such a unique and memorable novella.
The story introduces Corpse Corp, a company that allows people to hire a psycho to exact revenge on someone who has wronged them. When a woman suffering physical abuse at the hands of her husband seeks their services, both she and the reader are introduced to a cast of disturbing yet fascinating characters, each with their own preferred methods of torture.
What I found most interesting were the backstories. As each psycho is introduced, we learn what pushed them over the edge and ultimately turned them into who they are. Those glimpses into their pasts added depth to the story and made each character feel distinct.
For such a short read, it was surprisingly engaging and kept my attention from beginning to end. If you're looking for something dark, twisted, and a little unconventional for Summerween, this novella is a fun choice.
