Who needs a pack when you have a successful career to keep you warm at night?
Working throughout our Scottish Highland vacation wasn’t ideal. I needed to reconnect with my sister, deal with my grief, and keep up with my overwhelming workload. What could possibly go wrong trying to manage it all?

This omegaverse romance is so swoony and charming! Packed to the brim with heart and humor, the small-town Scotland setting was so dreamy and the perfect balance to all the knotty smut. While the romance was mostly heat driven, I loved the added tension and intrigue when it came to this pack. They had a lot of shit to figure out, but once they knew they were in, they went ALL in.

3.5 stars rounded up the more I sit on it. BRing it up with Elizabeth and it was so good to be able to talk this one out!
Twin sisters go to Scotland to reconnect with each other and spread their mother’s ashes at her request. Both end up finding love, with this being one of an interconnected duet and the other book is written about the other twin by another author. This story has the more serious sister feeling drawn to a couple of the local guys (and bumping heads a bit with their pack member). There’s expected angst given the h is only there for a month and the guys had an omega before who left - only one of the guys was truly heartbroken over her, but the pack as a whole was damaged. Some very cute scenes and some frustrating personal choices, this was a quick read that kept me turning pages.
Written in first person, multi-POV (with each main character). No real ow/om drama - the guys’ ex does briefly make an appearance but she’s with her new pack and the H who sees her doesn’t want her anyway, but the angst that she caused and how it hurt the guys feels ow drama-ish. One random om makes the h uncomfortable and one of the Hs is prepared to step in. Not om at all, but there’s an older guy who jokes/teases that the h could be with him or he could join the pack lol. All the characters are experienced, with some level of celibacy involved. The h hadn’t been in a relationship in years, just had her heats managed at a clinic. One of the guys hadn’t been with anyone since the ex and not 100% sure about the other two, but no manhoes here.

To start, this h kept way too much contained to herself. It drove me bonkers. She has a couple of life-altering events occur at different times in the book and she doesn’t immediately tell anyone about either one! Even the people who are theoretically directly impacted. For one of them, she could tell her twin that she’s able to spend more time with her and instead they each do their own thing despite the partial purpose of this trip being them reconnecting. The other affects the guys and while she does update them fairly quickly, she still held back initially for the “right” timing. Sigh.
Whew, got that out. This is character and relationship-driven with no huge plot device. It focuses on the relationship being created and whether the h is going to stay with the Hs. Also whether the pack works, given the tension between the guys. Even though the h sometimes made me want to shake her for not sharing, I did feel sympathy for her and I liked how she connected with the first two guys of the pack. It was insta-feeling, but they also were getting to know each other on a personal level. The scenes of her visiting with them at work, the caretaking, and support were all sweet and lovely.
The third member of the pack, the one with the heartbroken issues, was a more difficult pill to swallow and he took longer than I wanted to realize the h was awesome for his pack. Elizabeth thought he was meaner than I did, I just thought he was grumpy and a jerk at times. Once he did soften, I immediately liked him better, but the instant way his change of heart shifted the shaky pack dynamics to being ok bothered me. I wanted more overall pack reconnecting time, maybe like pack dates or something to re-establish them better considering at one point, there’s a genuine worry they’ll break apart.
This is a high heat omegaverse, pretty expected from what I’ve read by this author. All the regular omegaverse elements are here and there’s one on one time with the guys as well as group scenes. There’s a bit of spanking but no other kink that I recall. I did start skimming sex scenes by the end. I liked the more emotionally intimate moments between this group anyway and there were just so many spicier parts that it kind of wore my attention away.
Other elements I really enjoyed about the story - the bed and breakfast owners (and grandparents of the pack) were phenomenal. There’s an older guy in the town who hangs out at the pub that two of the guys own, he was hilarious. Fergus the dog was the best boy (though the use of “lulling” instead of “lolling” for his tongue about drove me batty too). The scenery while one of the Hs gave tours sounded beautiful and even though I’ve never been to Scotland, there was an authentic feel. I loved how the h found her place and a new sense of purpose in this small town.
Some other parts that bothered me a bit - there were some typos strewn about that took me out of the flow a couple times. The resolution involving the h’s job was kind of bizarrely managed. It felt pretty unrealistic and out of the blue for some reason. I also never connected to the h’s sister, perhaps because there wasn’t enough sisterly moments? She felt like a far more flat side character than some of the others and she was supposed to be a main side character. I honestly have no interest in reading her book because of this.
The ending is very sweet and ties a nice bow on this newly bonded pack. The short jump ahead in time is adorable and I did believe in this group’s HEA. I think a good bit of omegaverse readers will find this hits the spot. It won’t be a reread for me, but it worked well for a weekend read. Elizabeth’s review does a good job of highlighting why this was 3.4 rounded down for her.

If you haven’t read any of Sarah Blue’s work and need a why choose with some great spice, this is your sign to do so with this book. I’ve been on a why choose kick and this seriously scratched my itch. Not only was the plot plotting, but the spice was SPICING. This was my first omega-verse, crazy I know right? But I knew going in to this one that it would be great because I absolutely adore Sarah’s writing.
I loved Maisie and her story so much. The story follows Maisie taking a vacation in Scotland with her sister Birdie, to scatter their mother’s ashes and learn about how much their mother loved her home and hopefully the two becoming closer in the end. I know it took Maisie a minute to agree to staying on Scotland, because if three hot Scottish men asked me to uproot my life to move there for them, you know they wouldn’t even be able to finish their question fast enough for me to agree. Greer, Lain and Callum were the best MMCs. Each of them had such different personalities, but they were completely obsessed with Maisie and were just swoon worthy immediately. I love the fact that not only are Sarah’s books written from the main characters POV, but you can also tell whose chapter you are reading. It’s such a pet peeve and f mine reading a book and it’s multiple POV’s and I can never tell who it is because each chapter/character has the same personality and they all just sound the same.
Even though the story had lots of yummy spice, the plot seriously made me want to up and move to Scotland. Sure the men would be a bonus, but honestly who doesn’t want to leave the states permanently and live in a cute small Scottish town? I cannot wait for Birdies book and to read about her men!

Another great omegaverse from Sarah Blue! And in Scotland?? Maisie goes to Scotland with her twin sister to spread her mother's ashes, and the first person she meets is an alpha who helps change their flat tire. She starts to spend more time with this alpha and one of his pack mates, but she knows she's heading back to America soon. I loved the dynamic between Maisie and her alphas, especially the one alpha who is adamant he will never trust an omega again. I loved the Scottish setting and how Maisie slowly let herself give control and responsibilities and put herself first. The side characters were so fun and I can't wait to read Fallon English's book next!

Another buddy read with RL. One of these days, we're going to get a big win on a buddy read. Sadly, we both thought this wasn't it.
This is a story about a workaholic who has promised her dead mother that she would reconnect with her twin sister on their joint trip to scatter their mother's ashes.
Instead, she gets fired, keeps secrets from her sister, and bangs a few handsome locals.
I hated that Maisie's big lessons get subsumed by getting railed. We're told that she realizes she doesn't have to work so much and we're told her relationship gets better with her sister... but the premises this book starts with don't ever materialize.
Instead we get a fine/okay romance with three lovely men. Lain, Callum, and Greer are lifelong friends and packmates. Lain and Greer are pretty much instantly smitten over Maisie and we get pretty quick dates to sex where they all decide it's a quick fling while she's visiting even though Lain and Greer want more.
Callum is bitter and resentful after their pack's ex-omega left them for her scent matches. He's determined to despise Maisie and tells her and everyone around her so.
I am not a fan of how long Callum acts like a jerk to her and his two friends. Or how deeply a jerk he acts. If he was just silent and broody, maybe I could handle it. But he's pretty vocal with his disapproval/dislike and I didn't feel great about that.
I hated how much their ex seems to have messed him and their pack up... and how little it was dealt with. It's just "well, we have a new woman. I guess all is well". If you're going to make someone this messed up after a relationship, he should have to go through some intense work to understand why he's so closed off rather than making him have a split second, "I guess she's a better person than I thought."
It makes me think less of him. Like, he won't treat a stranger well UNTIL he knows they can meet his expectations?
I liked the dog, Effie and Argus (lovely human beings), and Andy (was that the old guys' name?).
I can't imagine wasting my time on the sister's story because it plays out at the same exact pace as the main character's. Like, there's no hint of anything that would make it substantially different (other than they are slightly different people).
Finally... near the end, there's a quick resolution to our main character's firing. It actually made me WAY less happy because it makes me think terrible things are happening that this main character is willing to overlook. I really wish the author hadn't done that.
I've enjoyed a lot of books by this author, but this one was not one I would recommend.

Ok, so listen, sometimes omegaverse books don't really need a third alpha... this is that case. Give me some Greer and Lain any day. Callum, though... I get having issues but, boy, did the guy annoy the ever-living hells out of me. You can have any and all issues under the sun, and not be a d!ck about it, which was, apparently, news to this guy. I don't think the connection between all of them makes sense, but it is what it is...
Also, I might give the sister's book a chance. I don't know. It's called Knot a Highland Fling by Fallon English. I don't think I've ever read anything from this author, but the sister seemed cool enough, even if we don't really see her much here.

2.5 stars roundes to 3. It was okay, but I got a bit bored by the end. If cozy small town romance is for you, then this might be up your alley. For me, it fell quite flat. Characters didn't really stand out and I had trouble connecting with them, especially Maisie. The "no strings attached sex" as plot tends to make me not relate to anyone and just turns me off from connecting with the characters.

There was no real romantic development with Lain, Greer, or Callum. Maisie barely got to Scotland and wanted to focus on her career, but she gets fired right away and ends up spending more time with Greer and Lain. For 200ish pages, Callum couldn't stand her and didn't want her around, and it was causing issues for the pack. I just find it hard to believe that one interaction between Callum and Maisie changed the dynamic between them so quickly, and she just didn't push back. The scene being her kissing Callum. She shouldn't have, considering how poorly he treated her. It also seemed like this was a vacation fling, honestly, with the time they spent together being more physical than emotional. They did talk about some things they went through for the most part (loss of a parent). Most of the time, they were sleeping together, and she was on scent blockers, so she didn't even know they were scent matches at the time, and they still found her interesting. They knew there was something about her, but they couldn't pinpoint what it was exactly. So from there, they just ran with the idea that they could be together and have meaningless sex, but obviously that didn't work out because they fell for her.
Greer had mentioned that he was in love with her, and honestly, I found it hard to believe because she was only there for a little bit of time. Yes, he found her interesting, but does that automatically mean that it's love after such little time together? The best part was that finding out they were scent matches almost brought him to his knees. However, as soon as the reveal happened, she went into heat. Really? I'm saying, everything continued to happen so fast for no reason. I get we're working with 300ish pages here, but it's so frustrating when it's rushed and feels like insta-love, even for an omegaverse where scent matches exist. Also, she bonded with them, but they knew little about each other (she didn't even know their last name). Upon deciding to stay in Scotland, she said it would be important to discuss questions about the future… such as children. Don't you think that would've been important before changing the trajectory of your entire life for men you've known for a few weeks? Just a thought.
He speaks the truth! I did not like Callum. He was rude and unnecessarily hostile toward Maisie just because his packmates wanted to pursue her… and he was pining over his ex who left them two years ago. Suddenly, she kisses him to make his ex, Fiona, think he moved on, and he has a change of heart about her. Absolutely not. It doesn't take away all the times he was an ass for no reason. The lack of character development was downright diabolical. I don't think he has the right to change his mind after a kiss. If it had been because of her personality, that would've been different, but this entire time he's anti-Maisie. She kisses him, and now he's noticing her differently? What happened to real romance? This is just lust. The issue is that he was opposed to finding an omega, even with his pack, and he was willing to let them be and leave the pack because he was so adamant about how heartbroken he was and how he still needed time. They had happily moved on, and he was still stuck in the past. But then, as soon as he sees Fiona again, the feelings are no longer there, and he's paying more attention to Maisie. In that case, all his behavior and attitude up until then, which was 200 pages, felt meaningless if one chapter was going to change everything and she was going to be forgiving.
I don't understand how he can be included, especially after he was so hellbent on not having her around. This book was supposed to include scenes where she bonded with her sister and rebuilt their broken relationship, but both of them were too busy with alphas to even work on their sisterhood… so they seriously just got closer by talking about wanting to stay with men. I don't even think reconnecting should've been a plot point if they weren't going to get enough time together.

There was no real romantic development with Lain, Greer, or Callum. Maisie barely got to Scotland and wanted to focus on her career, but she gets fired right away and ends up spending more time with Greer and Lain. For 200ish pages, Callum couldn't stand her and didn't want her around, and it was causing issues for the pack. I just find it hard to believe that one interaction between Callum and Maisie changed the dynamic between them so quickly, and she just didn't push back. The scene being her kissing Callum. She shouldn't have, considering how poorly he treated her. It also seemed like this was a vacation fling, honestly, with the time they spent together being more physical than emotional. They did talk about some things they went through for the most part (loss of a parent). Most of the time, they were sleeping together, and she was on scent blockers, so she didn't even know they were scent matches at the time, and they still found her interesting. They knew there was something about her, but they couldn't pinpoint what it was exactly. So from there, they just ran with the idea that they could be together and have meaningless sex, but obviously that didn't work out because they fell for her.
“Ah, you’re the roadside American damsel, Maisie,” he says and I groan, putting an elbow on the table and holding up my cheek.
Greer had mentioned that he was in love with her, and honestly, I found it hard to believe because she was only there for a little bit of time. Yes, he found her interesting, but does that automatically mean that it's love after such little time together? The best part was that finding out they were scent matches almost brought him to his knees. However, as soon as the reveal happened, she went into heat. Really? I'm saying, everything continued to happen so fast for no reason. I get we're working with 300ish pages here, but it's so frustrating when it's rushed and feels like insta-love, even for an omegaverse where scent matches exist. Also, she bonded with them, but they knew little about each other (she didn't even know their last name). Upon deciding to stay in Scotland, she said it would be important to discuss questions about the future… such as children. Don't you think that would've been important before changing the trajectory of your entire life for men you've known for a few weeks? Just a thought.
“Thank you for being patient with me. I know…I know I’m not easy to love,” he says, and that breaks my fucking heart.
He speaks the truth! I did not like Callum. He was rude and unnecessarily hostile toward Maisie just because his packmates wanted to pursue her… and he was pining over his ex who left them two years ago. Suddenly, she kisses him to make his ex, Fiona, think he moved on, and he has a change of heart about her. Absolutely not. It doesn't take away all the times he was an ass for no reason. The lack of character development was downright diabolical. I don't think he has the right to change his mind after a kiss. If it had been because of her personality, that would've been different, but this entire time he's anti-Maisie. She kisses him, and now he's noticing her differently? What happened to real romance? This is just lust. The issue is that he was opposed to finding an omega, even with his pack, and he was willing to let them be and leave the pack because he was so adamant about how heartbroken he was and how he still needed time. They had happily moved on, and he was still stuck in the past. But then, as soon as he sees Fiona again, the feelings are no longer there, and he's paying more attention to Maisie. In that case, all his behavior and attitude up until then, which was 200 pages, felt meaningless if one chapter was going to change everything and she was going to be forgiving.
“Book smarts and street smarts aren’t the same thing. Why would you let her charm you? Omegas never stay, Lain. She’s going to leave here in under a month and take your sappy little heart with her,” Callum says, and I blink at him.

This is a simple, low angst read that scratched the omegaverse itch but is otherwise thoroughly mediocre. To sum it up: plot issues, MMC issues, and grammatical errors.
The premise here is that two sisters travel to Scotland on a trip that was their mother’s dying wish in order to scatter her ashes, experience her homeland, and spend time bonding together. It's clearly expressed that the sisters have grown apart over time and they are intended to spend the time together. What do they do? Spend almost no time together. Why introduce this as the whole reason for the trip to begin with if you aren’t putting the characters together for more than 8% of the book? It honestly made the FMC’s unlikable since I didn’t think they were trying with one another at all.
The FMC, Maise, starts out married to her job with a lot of her identity caught up in her career (I can empathize), but then she’s wrongfully terminated for her designation and flounders. She decides the solution to her problem is a no-strings-attached situation with two local alphas. Sure. Except that the third alpha in the pack, Callum, is a total jerk to her – for the majority of the book. Even when the tides eventually turn, he doesn't do much to deserve the relationship. I could have done without him altogether.
The final issue I had was that this needed an editor. There are multiple grammatical errors and a few instances of the incorrect word being used in a sentence, which an editor should have caught.
If you love Omegaverse stories, this is one. It’s not an especially well thought out plot and you may have mixed feelings about main characters. It is a simple read and two of the MMC’s, the dog and the grandmother Effie are sweet. Not the worst, but there's much better omegaverse out there.

This is definitely one of my top Sarah books 1000%. I absolutely fell in love with Maisie and her pack 🥹. Seeing her growth towards the book, not just with herself but with her sister Birdie also, was beautiful to witness. Sarah had me laughing 😂 , crying 😭 , and sweating 🥵 with this book. Sarah always writes the best mmc’s and Callum, Greer, and Lain were no different 🤌🏽. They were all so different in their own way. Greer and Lain were absolutely taken away by Maisie and Callum had his own reservations due to his past but seeing his growth in himself and when it came to Maisie and his pack was amazinggggg!!! Also Fergus, the dog, is the absolute cutestttt!!
The spice was top tier🤌🏽, especially when they had the gorgeous Scotland scenery as their backdrop. Also, the side characters had me cracking UP 😂😂. I really just loved everything about this book 😩 it was so freaking goooddd!!!

Sarah blue is the ultimate OV author. The Omega is an independent AF who’s made it a point to never deal with Alphas. When she travels to Scotland with her twin, she learns so much about herself and meets a pack who treats her like a princess (which she struggles to get to used to.)
It’s a great story where the character development of the Omega and Callum, one of the grumpiest Alohas who ever grumped, was so lovely to see.

A sweet-fluffy, omegaverse set in the Scottish Highlands WITH HIGHLAND COOS - what more could you want?
I had such a fun time buddy-reading this with my sister in all that is feral and smutty, Parkers_Bookshelves.
This was my first-ever Sarah Blue omegaverse and the first in the Highland Heat, omegaverse duology - with book 2 Knot a Highland Fling to be released on the 24th July (and yes, another buddy read is to follow!)
The Highland Heat duology follows two sisters, Maisie and Birdie as they travel to their mothers ancestral homeland and birthplace, near Oban, Scotland in order to spread her ashes. This trip is a chance, not only to lay the only parent they every had to rest, but to reconnect as siblings. Their mother, Lorna's, last wish was for them to find each other again, after life had strained their connection. She orchestrates their trip, booking rooms at a long time friends' B&B, Heather Beag, in the hope they find peace. On their journey to Gleann Dùil, they are saved by a handsome, Scottsman in a kilt who is immediately smitten with Maisie.
But Maisie has NO intention to experience a Highland Romance. This trip is to spend time with her sister, spread her mum's ashes and to make sure she keeps on top of her work at an Omega Cosmetics brand during her month-long trip overseas. She has never been in love, never had a relationship of any significance and does NOT have any intention of changing her plans. That is until she finds herself wrongfully terminated, in an idyllic town in Scotland, with not one BUT two alphas interested in courting her. This was DEFINITELY not in her plans - particularly when a relationship with sweet, cheerful Lain and gentle, protective Greer would mean putting their already tentative packbond with distant and more than a little obnoxious Callum, in jeopardy.

I had such a fun time!!! This was such a fun, quick spicy read. I like to think of myself as an old-hand to omegaverse at this point, however this was my first Sarah Blue! This book felt like coming home - the setting, the vibes and cosy ambiance, truly felt like a hug on paper.
Maisie is the definition of a type A, anxious girlie-pop. When she is first introduced, she is dedicated first and foremost to her job. She has no time for anything but job progression, but she doesn’t really have an identity or life outside of climbing the corporate ladder until she is forced to. She is a perfectionist who is terrified of failure - less so for her own detriment but in fear of what her sister will think/that she is a poor example to her sister who is much more free-spirited than herself. She also initially cuts herself off from her omega-identity. She uses “industrial strength” deodorisers and scentblockers and is very clinical in how she has previously handled her heats. She is determined not to find a pack or to fall in love. Overall, she is EXTREMELY hard on herself - which as a perfectionist, I can keenly relate to. That said, Scotland permanently alters her. Not only in that she begins to open up to love and the prospect of a pack, but she also begins to find herself and starts to act for HERSELF, not for what is expected of her. I loved seeing her growth throughout the book, as well as how she begins to open up to her sister and learns to lean on her.
NATURALLY the relationship between Maisie and her Alphas is perfection. I loved how they interacted as Pack Macleoud, but also as individual couples.
I don’t think I can truly express how much I adore Lain. Not only is he the biggest cinnamon bun, himbo angel, he is also ridiculously funny. His interactions with Greer and Callum, had me laughing out loud at several points throughout the book. Lain is the sweet, bubbly alpha to offset the seriousness of the rest of his pack. He is also the sweet dog-daddy to Fergus. And that isn’t even mentioning how ridiculously attractive the man is, in his kilt 😍 He truly MADE this book. I loved his relationship with Maisie and how he was able to bring out her less-serious, carefree side. He was also just OBSESSED with her and this led to some seriously sweet and thoughtful interactions. I also loved his rivalry with Rory - the other tour guide in town.
Greer was definitely the middle ground between Lain’s levity and Callum’s severity. He is quieter than his packmates, but also more thoughtful. He is pack-Alpha and takes the protective role extremely seriously. He is the PERFECT rugged MMC - steady and soothing, but also equally obsessed with his omega and determined to give her the world. I loved everything about him. No notes. Perfection.
Callum was definitely a marmite type of character (not an intentional pun, given he is a chef), you are either going to love him or hate him. Or hate him and then begrudgingly love him at the end (but totally grumble about it, in true grumpy sunshine behaviour). From the start he is portrayed as a grump and often comes across as rude, not only towards Maisie but his pack and everyone he interacts with. He can be brash and on some occasions come across as controlling. However, we learn that he is dealing with a world of hurt. Not only is he still coming to terms with losing his parents as a child, but then also being abandoned and a point of ridicule from his former omega, Fiona (who does make an appearance). This has made him bitter and determined not to trust omegas and certainly not bond with one - even if that is what his pack wants most. It takes a while for him to really SEE Maisie and learn to open his heart. I am not opposed to his grumpy/surliness; however I DO think he should have been subject to far more grovelling. While I know it is not in Maisie’s character to make him do so, I think with how he treated her as well as Lain and Greer, it was warranted. That said, when Callum and Maisie did finally realise and admit their feelings for one another, their bond/relationship was very sweet. He immediately was besotted and obsessed with taking care of her.
As for Birdie, Maisie’s twin sister, we see glimpses of her throughout the book - as well as her pack. This book and it’s sequel/companion Knot a Highland Fling, is set during Knot a Highland Romance, so the hints at her character development are minimal - I cannot wait to read more about her when it is released! From what we do see, Birdie is portrayed as a free-spirit, someone who follows their heart before all else. It is also clear she idolises her sister. While the focus of the book is predominantly on pack dynamics, we DO see Maisie and Birdie’s relationships become much closer as they both find themselves in Scotland. I loved every on-page interaction and can’t wait for more!
I also loved how well-developed and authentic the secondary characters are in KAHR. Effie and Angus, are not only the owners of the Heather Beag, but they are also Callum’s grandparents and Lain & Greer’s honorary grandparents. They play such a vital role in matchmaking Maisie and her pack. But also in helping Maisie grieve and find meaning and purpose again. I loved seeing them interact with the characters and each other. I also realllllly hope they feature heavily again in KAHF.
Alan, the older gentleman who frequents Greer’s was also a delight. He is the quintessential cheeky gent that is often found in small town pubs in the UK and I loved his interactions with Maisie - and the Pack.
Overall, this was such a fun read. The characters are so well developed and the relationships both between pack members and with side characters were thoughtful. The pacing was good - although I would have lovedddd more post-bonding fluff. And the writing was easy to follow - I appreciated Sarah’s attempt at authenticity when it came to Scottish language and vernacular. If you’re looking a fun, cosy omegaverse - with a sweet Scottish twist, look no further!

I had such a fun time!!! This was such a fun, quick spicy read. I like to think of myself as an old-hand to omegaverse at this point, however this was my first Sarah Blue! This book felt like coming home - the setting, the vibes and cosy ambiance, truly felt like a hug on paper.
Maisie is the definition of a type A, anxious girlie-pop. When she is first introduced, she is dedicated first and foremost to her job. She has no time for anything but job progression, but she doesn’t really have an identity or life outside of climbing the corporate ladder until she is forced to. She is a perfectionist who is terrified of failure - less so for her own detriment but in fear of what her sister will think/that she is a poor example to her sister who is much more free-spirited than herself. She also initially cuts herself off from her omega-identity. She uses “industrial strength” deodorisers and scentblockers and is very clinical in how she has previously handled her heats. She is determined not to find a pack or to fall in love. Overall, she is EXTREMELY hard on herself - which as a perfectionist, I can keenly relate to. That said, Scotland permanently alters her. Not only in that she begins to open up to love and the prospect of a pack, but she also begins to find herself and starts to act for HERSELF, not for what is expected of her. I loved seeing her growth throughout the book, as well as how she begins to open up to her sister and learns to lean on her.
NATURALLY the relationship between Maisie and her Alphas is perfection. I loved how they interacted as Pack Macleoud, but also as individual couples.
I don’t think I can truly express how much I adore Lain. Not only is he the biggest cinnamon bun, himbo angel, he is also ridiculously funny. His interactions with Greer and Callum, had me laughing out loud at several points throughout the book. Lain is the sweet, bubbly alpha to offset the seriousness of the rest of his pack. He is also the sweet dog-daddy to Fergus. And that isn’t even mentioning how ridiculously attractive the man is, in his kilt 😍 He truly MADE this book. I loved his relationship with Maisie and how he was able to bring out her less-serious, carefree side. He was also just OBSESSED with her and this led to some seriously sweet and thoughtful interactions. I also loved his rivalry with Rory - the other tour guide in town.
Greer was definitely the middle ground between Lain’s levity and Callum’s severity. He is quieter than his packmates, but also more thoughtful. He is pack-Alpha and takes the protective role extremely seriously. He is the PERFECT rugged MMC - steady and soothing, but also equally obsessed with his omega and determined to give her the world. I loved everything about him. No notes. Perfection.
Callum was definitely a marmite type of character (not an intentional pun, given he is a chef), you are either going to love him or hate him. Or hate him and then begrudgingly love him at the end (but totally grumble about it, in true grumpy sunshine behaviour). From the start he is portrayed as a grump and often comes across as rude, not only towards Maisie but his pack and everyone he interacts with. He can be brash and on some occasions come across as controlling. However, we learn that he is dealing with a world of hurt. Not only is he still coming to terms with losing his parents as a child, but then also being abandoned and a point of ridicule from his former omega, Fiona (who does make an appearance). This has made him bitter and determined not to trust omegas and certainly not bond with one - even if that is what his pack wants most. It takes a while for him to really SEE Maisie and learn to open his heart. I am not opposed to his grumpy/surliness; however I DO think he should have been subject to far more grovelling. While I know it is not in Maisie’s character to make him do so, I think with how he treated her as well as Lain and Greer, it was warranted. That said, when Callum and Maisie did finally realise and admit their feelings for one another, their bond/relationship was very sweet. He immediately was besotted and obsessed with taking care of her.
As for Birdie, Maisie’s twin sister, we see glimpses of her throughout the book - as well as her pack. This book and it’s sequel/companion Knot a Highland Fling, is set during Knot a Highland Romance, so the hints at her character development are minimal - I cannot wait to read more about her when it is released! From what we do see, Birdie is portrayed as a free-spirit, someone who follows their heart before all else. It is also clear she idolises her sister. While the focus of the book is predominantly on pack dynamics, we DO see Maisie and Birdie’s relationships become much closer as they both find themselves in Scotland. I loved every on-page interaction and can’t wait for more!
I also loved how well-developed and authentic the secondary characters are in KAHR. Effie and Angus, are not only the owners of the Heather Beag, but they are also Callum’s grandparents and Lain & Greer’s honorary grandparents. They play such a vital role in matchmaking Maisie and her pack. But also in helping Maisie grieve and find meaning and purpose again. I loved seeing them interact with the characters and each other. I also realllllly hope they feature heavily again in KAHF.
Alan, the older gentleman who frequents Greer’s was also a delight. He is the quintessential cheeky gent that is often found in small town pubs in the UK and I loved his interactions with Maisie - and the Pack.
Overall, this was such a fun read. The characters are so well developed and the relationships both between pack members and with side characters were thoughtful. The pacing was good - although I would have lovedddd more post-bonding fluff. And the writing was easy to follow - I appreciated Sarah’s attempt at authenticity when it came to Scottish language and vernacular. If you’re looking a fun, cosy omegaverse - with a sweet Scottish twist, look no further!
