Four exceedingly large explosions destroy two important institutions in Bangkok without warning. Everybody in both buildings is killed, but none of the likely candidates claims responsibility.
The British and American governments have an interest and the Royal Thai Police Force begins its own investigations, but they all show scant regard for each other's inquiries. Cooperation is minimal.
This means that the British have to get a team on the spot... a team that is experienced enough to get the job done with hardly any assistance, since they have no-one available. A team skilled in the use of unconventional methods.
As the top brass is wondering how they are going to tackle this awkward situation, a member of the SAS, one of Britain's most elite fighting units, remembers seeing Gareg, Bob and Dave in an old-fashioned teak hotel on Koh Samui on his way back from a mission, so an agent from MI6 is sent to investigate.
This is a fast-moving thriller set in Bangkok, Koh Samui and the Thai-Malaysian rainforests in Thailand's troubled south, reviving memories of the Irish Question and Separatism in the Seventies and Eighties.
Owen Jones, Amazon Best-Selling Author from Barry, Wales, has lived in several countries and travelled in many more. While studying Russian in the USSR in the '70's, he hobnobbed with spies on a regular basis; in Suriname, he got caught up in the 1982 coup; and while a company director, he joined the crew of four as the galley slave to sail, from Barry to Gibraltar, a home-made concrete yacht, which was almost rammed by a Russian oil tanker and an American aircraft carrier. “I am a Celt, and we are romantic”, he said when asked about his writing style, “and I firmly believe in reincarnation, Karma and Fate, so, sayings like 'Do unto another...', and 'What goes round comes around' are central to my life and reflected in my work. I write about what I see, or think I see, or dream... and, in the end it is all the same really”. He speaks seven languages and is learning Thai, since he lives in Thailand with his Thai wife of seventeen years. His first novel, Daddy's Hobby is from the seven-part series 'Behind The Smile: The Story of Lek, a Bar Girl in Pattaya', but his largest collection is 'The Megan Series', twenty-three novelettes on the psychic development of a teenage girl, the subtitle of which, 'A Spirit Guide, A Ghost Tiger and One Scary Mother!' sums them up nicely. He has written fifty novels and novelettes, including: Dead Centre; Andropov's Cuckoo; Fate Twister; The Disallowed (a philosophical comedy); Tiger Lily of Bangkok; and A Night in Annwn (Annwn being the ancient Welsh word for Heaven). Many have been translated into foreign languages and narrated into audio books. Owen Jones writes stories set in Wales, Spain and Thailand, where he now lives. He is a life-long Spiritualist, and this belief is interwoven, in a very realistic way, into many of his books and storylines. If you like a touch of the 'supernatural', try his books He sums his life up thus: “Born in the Land of Song, Living in the Land of Smiles”.
This book is part of the 'How to...' series of 125 manuals by Owen Jones. The whole series can be found on Megan Publishing Services at: http://meganpublishingservices.com
Having read the first book in this series Dead Centre: Not All Suicide Bombers Are Religious! I was very happy when I was approached to read this one.
Most of us are conditioned to think of suicide bombers as being the bad guys from groups such as ISIS and Al Quada. But what would happen if one of our friendly governments decided to use clandestine methods to take down terrorist groups? What if they used expats who were wanted but not really by the government. This is decidedly an interesting look at what might happen (or has it actually happened-which we will NEVER know for sure) when a British and an American embassy are decimated by who they think may be Islamic terrorists in Bankok, Thailand. It also delves into the mindset of the Thai people, mostly the ladies, who have fled the countryside to earn money in the cities.
‘Dead Centre II’ resurrects the three ex-SAS operatives from the first novel in the series, now hiding in Thailand, for a mission this time on behalf of the British Government. The latter finds itself without resources and the unusual approach offered by the trio could be just what they need. Author Owen Jones takes the reader on a journey from an explosive beginning to a page-turning finale in this thriller firmly grounded in the realities of today. Not only does he expose the political machinations behind events ripped from the headlines in convincing clarity, but he also tell the intimate tales of the people directly involved who’s stories provide a desperate and emotional counterpoint to the global events.
There is a strong sense of reality in the tale which pervades throughout, almost as though he gives the reader a peek behind the curtain at how governments react to terrorist threats whilst never forgetting that solutions are enacted by individual people with their own hopes and ambitions. This complex thriller, one which reminded me of ‘The Day of the Jackal’ in its construction on more than one occasion, will definitely make you think.
