The plot was decent, but the writing style was weird and used "the way" so redundantly and vaguely that it was annoying.
"The afternoon moved the way these afternoons always moved."
"The bottom line was simple, in the way the worst things were always simple."
"I let the silence hold a count. I wanted to say the thing I was about to say. I wanted it to come out the way it had been sitting in my chest since the back of the rig."
"The room held the afternoon the way a room holds an afternoon it has been waiting for."
Seriously??? The second half of the book was so latent with these useless phrases that I wanted to scream.
I was really enjoying this one until about the last 10% when the writing turned into a hot confusing mess. Events were referred to out of order, a cousin was referred to as a sister, the same phrases were repeated over and over again. It was going to be a 4 or 4.5 star read for me until the last section when I really had to shake my head more than a few times.
Hannah Sparks has crafted another great firefighter story with Never Alone. You will love Cole and Tessa. This book pulls you into their world and holds you there until the very end. I love the gentle romance Hannah writes. Hannah has become a favorite author.
First, this was a great premise for a story. More melancholy than your typical romcom, this one was all seriousness. There are very heavy themes, but the story, at its core, is a good love story. But my word, every other paragraph was "the way" this and "the way" that. He drove the way he drove. She smiled the way she smiled. Literally every description was "the way", even when it was unnecessary. One sentence was, " The room held its breath the way a room holds its breath when its empty. Except it wasn't empty. She was in it." What? First, it means nothing. Rooms don't have breath and the gratuitous repetition ruined any poetic meaning it might have had. Anyway, that was 300 something pages of my life I won't get back. I only kept reading to see how she thwarted her ex, and that was disappointing, too.
I was really enjoying this up to a point, but then I started to notice how repetitive it got. A lot of sentences were phrased the exact same way; I lost count of how many “it was… in the way that…” sentences there were in the book. There were also pieces of information that didn’t line up, like Cole mentioning he’d only met someone a couple times, then he was later introduced to the that character for the first time. Or a cousin later being referred to as a sister.
Also, I checked the author’s Amazon page and she’s released 11 books in 2026, and there was no evidence of her existing prior to this year. All her social media pages were created in January 2026.
The story had potential… it was just executed poorly… it wasn’t believable at all… a 34 yr old HOT male firefighter never been kissed?? I kept hoping it would get better but sadly it never did. It was boring and there were several changes to facts that changed in the book…. Like once he was 3 when his dad died, then it said he was 5 when he died, then 3 again…. It said he didn’t meet Sam and Jamie until after they were married which wasn’t true , he knew them before they were even technically a couple….
1.5 I guess. I finished it despite it being a chore. Lack of character development, choppy writing, plot was messy. The sheer use of hyphens throughout the book made me want to rip my eyeballs out.
This one is all about getting a second chance at falling in love with someone because neither of you were in the right place the first time around. Ship’s in the night and all that.
Tessa has been on the run from her violent ex for what feels like forever and yet it’s still not long enough. She’s hiding so deep that she’s changed her name, how looks but she can’t change everything because she has a nine year old son. Living in shared accommodation has its challenges, they come due when she wakes in the middle of the night to smoke.
Through the smoke comes a fireman and suddenly he’s carrying her son to safety, he comes back for her. Outside when he’s leaning over her to ask if she’s ok, Tessa reacts she meant to say thank you but somehow she ended up kissing him instead. She was mortified and apologetic but still couldn’t regret it. Not even when it went viral on the internet but it did mean she either had to run or go back to see her lawyer again. If he hadn’t seen it already then her ex would see it soon and he would know where she was.
Tessa and her fireman had already met each other years before, because this was the last place she’d felt safe even if she’d said things back then that she never really meant.
I really wanted to enjoy this book, and the premise had a lot of potential, but unfortunately the writing style made it difficult for me to stay immersed in the story.
The prose is very short and punchy, with frequent sentence fragments and one-line paragraphs. While that style can be effective during emotional or high-tension scenes, it was used so consistently that it eventually became distracting rather than impactful. I also found the internal thoughts and information quite repetitive, with the same ideas often being restated without moving the story forward.
My biggest issue, however, was continuity. There were several instances where details seemed to contradict something stated earlier, sometimes within a very short span of pages. Those inconsistencies repeatedly pulled me out of the story.
I know this writing style will work for some readers, and there were aspects of the story and characters that I liked. It simply wasn’t for me. I made it to 83%, which says something because I really hate not finishing a book, but by that point I was struggling more with the writing than enjoying the story.
I was frustrated by this book. I love the premise, but the whole plot and also the characters just seemed to amble along waiting for things to happen. The relationship between Tessa and Cole felt very awkward and they left so much unsaid that it seemed a little unbelievable that they could even develop a relationship. Strangely, it felt like Cole’s relationship with Tessa’s son was more developed than his relationship with Tessa. I also may have made a mistake by not reading the first book in the series. Maybe I would have felt less lost with the side characters if I had started with the first one.
If you are someone who wants an unhurried plot, this one could be for you. The action does eventually pick up and those parts were great.
This series started off intense with Sam & Jamie’s story but this was soft, sweet, patient and slow in a good way. I loved the turn this story made from Cole rescuing Tessa and Noah from a fire. Cole being the stranger firefighter she kissed on impulse from gratitude. To in a time of desperate need her asking him to Marry her and then resulting in their story starting 18 years prior.
Great end to this series. Great characters that show up for each other and another amazing love story from Hannah Sparks.
Would love to know if Rosie and Quinn will get their own HEA? 🤔
Okay, this one definitely pulled me in! Tessa and Cole’s story had so much heart, and I loved the protective firefighter vibe. The situation with Tessa and her son had me invested right from the beginning, and Cole was such a sweet, steady character.
I really liked the softer side of their relationship and the way their little family came together. There were definitely some emotional and heavier moments, but overall it was a sweet romance with a happy ending.
I will say, some parts felt a little repetitive and the pacing was slower than I expected, but I still enjoyed the story and was happy I stuck with it. 🚒❤️
I need to remember that while I like the story, I don’t care for the authors style. “She had the look on her face she had when she was about to say a thing she had been waiting to say. She had walked across the porch the careful way an aunt walks when she has been holding a thing inside of her all afternoon, and the porch is the first room of the night that is empty enough for it. She had her face in the small set she got before saying a thing she had been saying inside her head for a long time.” ^ a lot of lines like this. I get it, I just don’t care for it.
You are the community of people who love you. Lean on them when necessary and trust their strength!!
The characters are molded slowly by their emotions and experiences over decades. Each person having others who change the way they act, believe and move forward. Depending on others can be critical, but knowing who you need to be is even more important. The path is never smooth, the road is never certain, but the reward is always worthy. Great story!!!!!*****
The writing was a little weird/different from my usual. Like everything was being described as an after thought. Lots talking about feelings rather than in the action. Kind of like the end of Hope Floats. It was like reading a book as though you’re in a dream.
The kid was said to be 9… but if he was always being carried and mom had to dress him, and shorter than a grown woman’s hip that kid is tiny or closer to 4/5.
the mmc reads very autistic coded, which can lead to a lot of thinking around feelings instead of actually feeling them but it also leads to paying attention and communicating when things happen.
its very low angst for a high angst topic.
minimal spice, more fade to black, found family, HEA
I enjoyed this story, however there were moments where I felt a little lost. I’m not sure if it’s because I hadn’t read the previous book and the author wrote it with the expectation that the reader would have or whether I just wasn’t reading between the lines fully. I don’t know. But I liked the characters and the story arc.
DNF- this book is AI and nobody bothered to even proofread it. I liked the premise of this book and kept going until about halfway through. The phrasing was repetitive, some sentences didn’t make sense, and details were inconsistent. In one paragraph she hung up her coat and then in the next paragraph she walked into a different room and took off her coat and hung it up.
Not sure what happened after the first book in the series that I enjoyed. The writing in this book was so repetitive that got annoying. Enjoyed the plot, otherwise this would have been my first dnf. But the "He nodded once" or "a beat longer than needed to" that was written like every other page or so had my eyes rolling
I loved this story. It was hard, raw and emotional but none of those in a graphic way. I couldn't put it down. The characters are so good. They have banter and loyalty. They are one huge found and blood family. Tessa and Noah left a very unsafe place and she unconsciously came to the last place she felt safe. She wasn't wrong.
Loved the way the story unfolded. Well written and compelling. Characters were believable and kept my interest. Nearly seamless sequel with the exception of the timing of the bbq at end of first book and the first on in second. All in all a great read.
Nasty beginning turned quickly into a story with lots of warm moments.still had some scary times but thank goodness it all worked out for the loving mum ,her son and the fabulous firefighter.
The writing style is torturous and repetitive. The story had so much potential, but so much of it was totally unrealistic. The characters do not communicate with each other… Like they literally don’t talk to each other. So you don’t see development at all.
