A really pleasant surprise!
So I'd heard about the movie and thought it sounded interesting. The US President's escape pod lands in a forest and is found by a soon to be 13 year old boy who helps him evade bad guys. Honestly, I really didn't expect much. I so love it when a book surprises me!
Oskari is an insecure 12 year old who is about to participate in an age old tradition. He is heading out into the forest with the village's traditional bow and arrows to hunt. He's expected to bring back something great. His father brought back a bear. But Oskari can't even draw the bow back all the way. Tomorrow he turns 13 and he expected to return a man and he's convinced he's going to fail.
Big Game is a great story of self discovery. I could say so many great things about this story. Instantly I cared about Oskari. I think we've all faced those moments of doubt, when we had expectations we were convinced we couldn't meet. As the story progressed, Oskari becomes more and more real. It became pretty much impossible for me to put this book down without knowing what was going to happen next. It's definitely a rollercoaster ride.
It is a novel written for young adults so don't expect any complicated prose or intricate plot. The writing is crisp and clean and well it gets the job done. What more can you ask for?
There is violence and come gruesome parts that I would not recommend for young readers. But highly recommended for teenage readers.
