This 15,000 word novella is a PG read and was originally published as part of the Call Me Valentino anthology.
Cassie Morgan has to take fifteen young ladies all the way to Texas from New York, but she is unsure if it's a good idea to be driven there by a rugged cowboy. How will she keep her heart intact? When Valentino Hayes is offered the job of driving a bus full of orphans to Texas, he jumps at the chance to find his long lost brother. Now to convince the beautiful Mrs. Morgan to permit it. Will the trip to Texas be more than they expected?
The concept of the story had some real potential, attractive single man driving a bus with attractive woman chaperoning 15 high school age girls. Unfortunately, it's potential was left unfulfilled. Conversations were predictable as we're events. And the time period was a bit uncertain. A bus that travels 10 mph driving across the U.S...,was it even possible to drive from the eastern U.S. to the west in 2 weeks?
In my seemingly endless pursuit of getting caught up on all of Ms. Osbourne’s various series, I’ve added the Orlan Orphans series to my rotation of titles to get read this year. I love finding connections within Ms. Osbourne’s many series that often tie into other series or family history if we’re talking about Contemporary Romance series. So when I recognized another connection I decided it was time to dive into his one as well as the others I’m devouring. What’s one more series added to the pile, right? (grin)
Since THE MATRON is a rather short story I’m not going to be able to say much for fear of ruining the book for other readers. Yet it was the perfect beginning to a series, for me. We have not one but several damsels in distress having to leave the only home they’ve ever known. One handsome hero not too sure how he’s going to be around sixteen females for two weeks in a bus while following his own reason for heading West…. and that bus, what a delightful way to show that this time frame was also the beginnings of motor vehicle traffic. Okay, maybe not much in the way of traffic jams, but a very nice touch. And one devoted to the children woman who has had her life turned upside-down in one day.
I enjoyed getting to know the girls that Cassie has cared for as well as a return to Nowhere, Texas – a place I already know and love. There are issues to be dealt with, a vile jerk of a man supposedly doing the church’s work, lovely young ladies to get to know and one very quirky couple who will open their arms to strangers. There’s a lot of emotions and story packed into this novella, and it sets up the rest of the series so sweetly. I enjoyed Cassie and Tino so much, against the odds they work so well together. If you’re in the mood to start another series or simply love Western Historical Romance then I’d recommend starting the Orlan Orphans series with THE MATRON. You’ll enjoy yourself.
When Cassie was told that the orphanage she was the matron of was being turned into a boys' home and she and 15 girls were being sent to Nowhere, Texas, she was devastated.
Tino was hired to drive 15 orphans and their beautiful matron to Nowhere, Texas, from New York. How was he going to survive a trip of 2 weeks with 16 women? And he still needed to continue his search for his missing brother. However, somewhere along the way Tino started to care about the girls, especially Cassie.
Will he finally have a reason to put down roots or will finding his brother take him away from the only woman he's ever loved?
This could have been so much more. The characters need to be deeper. We are given glimpses of them but it is as though they are pencilled in only. The plot is good — a group of orphans sent to Nowhere, Texas by the church who has taken over their orphanage, only to find that nothing has been put in place for them. However, the sentences are clunky and Osbourne spends too much time repeating herself, as well as telling the story in long-winded descriptions, rather than showing it through action. 2.5 stars
Fifteen orphan teen girls, one young matron to mother them and they are removed from the New York orphanage and sent to Nowhere! I just love the idea of a town named Nowhere! If everyone gets their story we only have 15 more. I look forward to the rest of this series.
Cassie has to relocate 15 girls from New York to Texas. Her driver keeps an eye on her and the girls through the entire voyage. When they arrived in Texas, at the church they were told there is no such home for them. What will happen to the 15 girls and Cassie? Will they find a place to live? these questions and more are answered in this wonderful story.
The Matron is the first installment of Kristen Osbourne’s Orlan Orphans series. In this one reader meet Cassie Morgan, 36, widow who spent most of her life running an orphanage. The new administrator expels her and 15 girls from the facility. Arranges passage to Nowhere, Tx. Hires Valentino Hayes to drive the bus there. Valentino took the job to get him close to Texas and his lost younger brother. Along the way, Valentino and Cassie fall in love. Will their love survive? Does Valentino find his long-lost brother? Is there a happy reunion? What happens with the orphan girls? You must read this book to find out. This book is a captivating read capturing the magnetism of true love. Ms. Osborne possesses a remarkable skill of creating diverse and appealing characters that fit the opposites attract theory. The main characters have chemistry between them. This book is beautifully written with great dialog and descriptive scenes that lends credibility to this HEA romance. Perfect read to curl up with on a warm summer weekend.
Short read but kept you interested throughout the story. Story ended where there could be more books written to continue on and with so many characters in this book, each girl could have their own story.
Lied to by a man representing the church, Cassie and 15 orphaned girls are on their way to Texas. Finding they have not been expected and have no place to go really causes problems for Cassie and the girls.
I chose this rating because it didn't have enough story in it I think if it was a little longer I would have liked it better. Anyone who likes short stories will like this book.
Dnf at 53%. Bored with it. I could finish it because it reads easy and it's quick, but I'd wind up giving a poor rating because the story and characters are uninteresting.
This book had potential to be a fairly decent historical romance, but it unfortunately fell short. First, the time period is a little unclear - early 1900s, but not obviously so. It is the first book of a series, so is introducing a bunch of characters, but because the book is so short it ends up feeling horribly rushed and falling flat. If Osbourne's other books follow a similar format, I have no interest in reading them.
This short read is the introduction to the Orlan Orphans series and it's great introduction! It is a short, quick read, but it's well written and it definitely made me excited to read more books in the series. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sweet, clean historical romances. You really can't go wrong with anything this author writes.
I hate reading books of a series out of order so when asked to review Ruby, I had to go find book 1. The Matron: Orlan Orphans Book 1 is actually part of an anthology titled Call Me Valentino, which I already owned but hadn’t read yet! I skipped through the book to find Matron and got busy! This was a wonderful book full of shocking situations that lead to love and acceptance! The orphanage, now under the care of the church of Orlan, NY decided to make it a boys home and kicks out the head mistress and all the girls aged 12 and older! These young ladies quickly grow a stiff upper lip and take the bull by the horns! After two weeks on the trail from NY to TX, they are ready to settle down and make the most of their terrible situation! A beautiful surprise awaits them and nothing could have shocked me more! One more reason Kirsten is the Kween!
This is about a woman named Cassie that has been over orphaned children for 15 years. The church decides to send the girls over 12 to Nowhere, Texas. They had a driver named Tino. When they got to Texas Cassie found out the church wasn't expecting them. They moved in with a lady named Edna that loved the girls and they loved her. After Tino found his brother he came back for Cassie and they got married
The matron for the orphanage, Cassie, and the older girls are sent to Texas when a local church takes over the operation of the orphanage. Guess who we run into? Goofy ole Edna Petunia, who always wanted a bunch of orphans. If you know Edna Petunia, you probably like her.
A sweet little story to connect new characters to familiar ones and start some new romances.
Cassie runs an orphanage in New York when they are taken over by a church she is told that she and the 15 older girls must leave, they say there's a house waiting for them now Nowhere TX and a man who will drive them there. So the adventure begins with a 2 week road trip 15 girls, 1 caretaker and a bus driver along with a big surprise when they get to Nowhere. Love it
What do you do when you've been told you have to leave your home and start anew in a new state. Cassie had run the orphanage for 15 years since her husband passed and she all of a sudden has no home for her older girls. She's told a house was purchased in Nowhere, TX and will be traveling by bus with the girls. When they get there, there is even more worries.
A very nice introduction to Kirsten Osbourne's newest series, a kindly woman who's devoted her life to the care of abandoned children and the dedicated cowboy searching for his long-lost brother. Well-written, full of twists and turns, and a delightful collection of characters whose stories I can't wait to read next!
I have read all of Kirsten Osbourne books and my favorite character has been old lady Edna Petunia, she's back I'm excited for the next book to come out since Edna is part of the orphans life I'm sure she will be in a few of the books....
Good read I enjoyed the story line although it seems a little like it could be several story lines and really like to stay with the read and not have to buy another book as sometimes there are to purchase. But still a good story
This could have been A Good Story. But as the last Book I read it just got good and dropped off to nothing. I was Very Disappointed. Knowing This Author Is Better Than This. Shirley Ketcham
So sad that 15 orphans and their aid were turned away from the only home most of them had only known. Luckily the move turned out working out for everyone.
Cassie - The Marm/ in charge of the 15 Orphans Valentino- Bus driver that took the 15 female orphans to Nowhere Texas An enjoyable comitic story with a great HEA
I enjoyed this nice clean love story. It kept my full attention. It seemed a little short, therefore I read it in one setting. I enjoy reading Ms. Osbourne's books and I am sure I will read more.
