At the age of 14, Kasey-Ray Thompson lost her mother to cervical cancer. Her father, the one person she needed to be there for her, was spiralling into the depths of depression. Just when she thought her life couldn’t get any worse, he died a year later. Kasey-Ray's whole world has come crashing down around her leaving her an orphan. The only relative she knows is her gran who is in a care home with Alzheimer’s. Her hopes of staying in Scotland with her best friend Lauren and her family are quickly dashed when a woman from social services announces that she is going to stay with a grandfather she had never met. Even worse, he lives in a small town called Alimanti, thousands of miles away in another country. Her grandfather’s cabin is in the middle of nowhere. They have no electricity, no internet, or any other modern technologies. As if that wasn't bad enough, her new school is almost two hours away. Kasey-Ray has lots of questions and her grandfather is refusing to answer them. He has clocks everywhere that go off at the same time every day, 4:30am, and Kasey-Ray can’t figure out why. She sees a man in the woods who tells her that he shouldn’t have brought her here because they will take what is hers. What does he mean? Kasey-Ray needs answers before time runs out.
Lavinia originally grew up in Cheshire and now lives in a small village just outside of Edinburgh with her husband, two children and two fur babies. Writing has always been something that Lavinia has loved since an early age. Over the years Lavinia has faced many obstacles but this has only spurred her on. In 2017 Lavinia was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer. She has chosen to not let this define her, if anything it has given her the drive to do more.
I have avoided this review for so long, I have to be honest that writing it breaks my heart despite the fact that a year has passed since Lavinia lost her own fight against cancer leaving her own children to navigate the world without her shining light. I am privileged to have bought a signed print copy of this book.
This is a YA book so not my usual genre but it was an easy captivating read with well written characters and an intriguing plot, the obvious problem is that this was intended as a series, and although there are three books available, I cannot say whether the story is really ended as I have not read those.
I did notice a few typos in this book but nothing to distract you from the story. if you have a pre-teen I would recommend this book as a good read am even more a chance to discuss different ways of life where the modern comforts are unknown not taken for granted.
I am use to this author's work and so when I was told she had a new book coming out I so wanted to get my hands on it so I could see what else she has up her sleeve. With Frozen in Time we are dealing with the unknown of what is in Alimanti . Kasey-Ray was a normal child until her mother died and then her father died of a broken heart. Thinking she could live with her best friend she is told that she has a grandfather who is going to take her and take care of her but only where he lives in a small town of Alimanti. Kasey-Ray being a teenager of course is not happy about this, but there is nothing she can do. I felt really bad for the young girl because she was out in the middle of no where with no electricity talk about going crazy!!! As the story progresses we learn why her grandfather and grandmother are no longer together, the person her grandmother is, is a big revelation one that Kasey-Ray is surprised at. There is something beyond the wooded area and what decision Kasey-Ray makes may not be the right one. I am excited to see where this series is going to go, after the ending I wonder what else is going to happen. I enjoyed the playfulness between Kasey-Ray and Josh it was harmless teenage jokes and fun but it was nice to see some type of humor within the book. This is a good book for the teenagers I think they will highly enjoy this book and others in the series as well.
Being a fan of the books by Lavinia Urban, I wanted to try out this new series as soon as possible. Sometimes it's a pity real life doesn't allow us to read as much as we would like. The story is a very sad one at moments, but luckily with happy events in between so you don't feel too bad for the main character. It would be nice to visit a place in Alaska like the one described in the book, without internet, cellphone, electricity, although I don't know if I would survive long there... The big surprise is of course the fae-world that comes in the story as Kasey-Ray gets to know more about the history of her family. It was a real pageturner for me, enjoyed the story that much, the few typos and missing words didn't disturb that much to notice them really. Now I'm looking forward to see where the story will go to from the ending of this book. Certainly a book to advise to people that like YA fantasy!
I was recommended this book from a friend who went to school with the author.
I enjoyed falling into a Faery world filled with evil kings, goblins & colorful characters. Whilst I felt that this book was written for a younger audience I still liked the fantasy world the author created.
The characters were well developed and the love between Kasey-Ray's grandparents was magic itself.
Unfortunately there were a lot of errors throughout, typo's & mis-placed words which was annoying.
If you like children's fantasy, with a splash of romance & drama this is for you.

I had always found my mum's obsession with jumpers strange. She loathed the cold weather and always yearned for the sun but her favorite items of clothing were jumpers, and now that I thought about it, the more I understood. My mum just liked to be warm.
I was immediately heartbroken for Kasey-Ray. The loss that life has given her. Those losses caused her to be ripped away from her life in Scotland all the way to Alaska. To her grandfather she has never met.
Things aren't quite as they seem in Alimanti and they keep getting stranger and stranger.
A great first book in the series, I've just bought the 2nd one. I can't wait to find out what happens next!
Frozen in Time: Alimanti was my first book by Lavinia Urban. I enjoyed the beginning of the book which had to do with Kasey-Ray Thompson and her grandfather. Kasey-Ray's world is turned upside down after the death of her father. She is forced to move from Scotland to Alaska to live with a grandfather she doesn't know. I enjoyed reading about the new litter of puppies! The second part of the book involving her grandmother and the man in the woods, was too much fantasy for my tastes. (Of note, this book needs more editing. It has many typos and incorrect use of verbs).
I am a fan of all of Lavinia Urban's books, but this has the beginning to be my favorite series! I got the message from her saying that she had named a characer for me and I literally cried. Even so, the writing of all the characters shows us true human nature, with shortcomings, strength and amazing power. I need to learn more about Michael. ...I'm still questioning his motives. Frozen in Time is the type of young adult book you and your young readers can share together, you can rest assured that the wiring is so amazing that you will both be entertained and enjoy it. Even though I hate cliffhangers, I love Frozen in Time and I am confident you will as well! ~Doris aka Dowie
This is the first book I have read by this author so I had no idea what to expect. I had it in my kindle for a long time and the cover kept putting me off, but the saying never judge a book by its cover is correct.
The beginning of this book os very heart touching and as a reader you feel every bit of Kacey-Rae's hurt and heartache.
Moving to Alimanti to be with her grandfather after both her parents die is where this story begins. It is a touching story from the beginning and Kacey-Rae shows courage to help her grandmother leave behind the faery world.
