After her mother’s sudden death, Rory Lane is home again. It has been fifteen years since she escaped Mount Pleasant and everyone and everything in it. Now she must oversee the closing of her mother’s affairs.
The only bright spot is Rory’s blossoming friendship with boarder CJ Rausch. Rory senses that CJ just might be her soul mate, but the handsome excavator is somewhat of a standoffish loner.
After an unthinkable event, Rory’s life spins out of control, and she must deal not only with her grasping, selfish sister, but also a manipulative, wannabe suitor. CJ offers Rory a way out, but at what price? Beware: Everyone has secrets in Mount Pleasant...And they enjoy them!

Love, Murder, Blackmail, and Soul Healing all in one book.
I was pleasantly surprised about this book. At first I thought it was going to be a basic every day romance novel. It wasn't. Rory came home after the death of her mom. It was the last place she wanted to be. Forced to stay to take care of a few loose ends, she gains a boarder.
CJ never thought he would ever find someone to love. One look at Rory, and he knew he just might have found her.
Just when you think you know where this story goes, it doesn't. Well written and I was so intrigued, I read this whole book in less than 24 hours.
I usually don't like books with so many twists and turns, but this one didn't bother me.
When Rory gets called home for her mother's funeral, she returns to the town and home she had vowed to never set eyes on again. Then she finds out she must share her home with a total stranger, CJ Rausch, who is relocating the local cemetery. Things go from bad to worse at this point: murder, lies, sexual intimidation, and a lot of drama and angst. It is a very good book, if a little wordy in some parts, but that didn't detract me from how much I enjoyed this book. I have read several of Natalie-Nicole Bates books, and they have all been very good.
Rory vowed never to return to Mount Pleasant, a place she hated. But her mother’s death and the settling of her estate brings her home. Rory’s trip takes an unexpected turn with excavator CJ becoming her boarder. As CJ finishes his city project, romantic feelings develop between them. Yet, family drama and an obsessed ex threatens their romance.
Rory and CJ’s love story starts out great with them both dealing with complicated pasta with their mothers. CJ is a caring man who offers emotional support to Rory through her chaotic life. However, toward the end of the story he acts like a jerk, and at certain points I felt Rory would be better off without him.
Another thing about the story is there’s a lot going on with the supporting characters including Rory’s sister Laurel and office Kyle. The two come across as annoying as they pose as threats to Rory and CJ’s relationship.
The story started off as promising, yet towards the end there’s too much going on and it wraps up too quickly.
This was the first book that I've read by this author, but it certainly won't be the last. The cover for this book instantly dragged me and I had to read it. From the opening chapter until the very end, I was captured. I loved CJ and Rory. Their lives had been one big misery until they met one another, and even then it was complicated. I'm glad they got the ending they deserved though. This book had a little bit of everything in it; romance, mystery, murder...it was a good story that I'd recommend you to read.
Natalie-Nicole Bates writes a sweet romantic story, with the elements of new found love and trust, which I truly enjoyed reading.
In this story the reader meets Rory, coming back home to Mount Pleasant from London due to her mother's death. Rory escaped from Mount Pleasant as a teen and never wanted to return, but needs to settle her mother's estate. The town council has decided to move the cemetery, which her parent's home is on and hires CJ Rausch's company to move the cemetery to a new location. CJ becomes Rory's boarder while he is in town doing the work.
Rory and CJ come from different backgrounds, but are both want love, family and a place to call home. But love never comes easy and Rory's sister puts a kink in a growing relationship, by doing something selfish and irresponsible.
Love takes trust and CJ has insecurities in this area and he will need to overcome his past to let love in.
Natalie-Nicole does a wonderful job getting her reader involved within the storyline and the characters.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a sweet romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Natalie writes an intriguing story. I absolutely love the cover, it's so beautiful and fits the story so well! The story itself will keep you reading in anticipation of what's going to happen next. Definitely a must read!
Rory is always looking for the good in everyone else but sees nothing worthy in herself. But she's not a weak whiny type and I loved that. She's determined not to let being back in her hometown suck her back in and keep her there. She's finally getting a life she loves and she's not going to let it go; but everything and everyone seems to be going against her!
CJ has always dreamed of a family. Someone to love him, give him children, and who he can love and trust. After the life he's led, he doesn't think it will ever happen. So when he's sucked into Rory's life, can he get what he wants by offering her a way out?
I loved this book!! Rory's world is turned upside down, and she finds herself back in the town of Mount Pleasant. The town she desperately needed to escape as a teenager. She meets up with a man named CJ who has also ran from his teenage years. Each have their own things to overcome. Each want the same things out of life: love, family, house, and just an enjoyable companion with love. The love you dream of when your a child. It's complicated, and when she thinks she has it all figured out her sister does the unthinkable, and once again her world is turned upside down...... I won't say more because I don't want to give away any spoilers. I received this as an Arc and I loved it!
Would I recommend this book? Yes absolutely. Did I find anything wrong with it? No. It was well written. I loved the story, characters, setting, etc.
One Winter by Natalie-Nicole Bates is a lovely story. Rory comes back home to Mount Pleasant but she does so very reluctantly. CJ is on his his last job with his company, as he is about to sell it and retire. Rory and CJ meet and realize they are kindred spirits, but of course they fight it. Their journey to each other is a very emotional one. The only issue I had with the story is how indecisive Rory acted...she needed to make sure and say something at some points in the story but never really stood firm. In the end she got her act together but it took awhile. I do recommend this story for someone looking for a sweet romance.
Rory and CJ's story is one of a lot of twists and turns. Both of them didn't have the best life growing up and were running from their past. Happenstance brings them together one winter and both are blindsided by their feelings for the other. Rory's sister is one of the main problems for them and the troubles keep adding up....
Would I recommend this book? Yes.. One Winter is a great quick read for those who enjoy contemporary romance.
One Winter is a beautiful love story that illustrates its never too late to fall in love and even though the past may haunt you it can be overcome. As a romantic at heart I loved seeing the underdogs who had a painful and lonely life fight to find their happily ever after. There are plenty of twists and turns to hold your interest and keep you on the edge of your seat. I recommend this story to romance lovers everywhere.
