Finn Macmillan is at odds with himself. The son of the alpha, he hadn’t even been thinking of his purpose in life when suddenly, life drops him a handsome young prince in the middle of the road on the way home to Hidden Lake, a haven for shifters away from the eyes of humanity.
And while Finn sees no problem in claiming his mate, Kahlil fears putting down roots. After all, he is being hunted.
How will Finn calm the exiled princeling down and make him see that with his rightful mate, Kahlil is Safe and Sound?
Frey Ortega writes erotic romance, primarily of the gay variety. He lives in what a friend affectionately calls “the south-easternmost part of Spain,” which is an archipelago called the Philippines. He’s a graduate of the Royal, Pontifical, and Catholic University in Manila, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology. Primarily, he works as a writer, a novelist, sometimes a video game journalist, and overall a homebody who spends way too much time on the internet.
Kahlil(19) is a prince of a small country in the desert. His life was easy and privileged till his family found out he was gay. In his country being gay means death. His father, the king, loving him, with the help of Samara,Kahlil's former nanny and now friend, was able to get him out of the country with a flight towards Montana. Kahlil didnt have any other choise than leave. This is a new start for him, Montana doesnt seem bad, maybe something good will come out of his exile. He doesnt have the time to finish that thought that his car breaks down. He doesnt know what to do, he doesnt know anyone there. He can see a town far away, maybe 1 or 2 hours on feet and decides that he can ask there for help. Few minutes later, Finn(22) the son of the Alpha of the town and his friend Kyle, find him walking in the woods and after asking why he is there, decide to help him and give him a ride. Back in his house, Finn cant stop thinking about Kahlil, from the first time he saw him, his wolf understood he is his mate. He is not shocked by the fact that his mate is a man,yes he has had relationship with only women but when he was a teenager he had explored(tug-and-play) with 1 or 2 guys too. His mate is human and beautiful and for him was really hard to hold himself back and not claim him in the car. When his father,Aiden, knocks on his door asking him if all was ok in town,Finn tells him that he and Kyle helped a man with a broken car. He doesnt need to explain more, since his father understands that the man is Finn's mate. The same thing had happened to him, when he was 17 and had met Finn's mother. Later while walking into town,Finn finds Kahlil sitting on a bench and sits near him. The 2 start to talk and we can see that not only Finn feels this pull towards the prince. Kahlil doesnt know why but he wants to kiss Finn so he does. This is his first kiss. They start talking and Kahlil tells him that he misses Samara, so Finn gives him his cellphone and tells him to call her. The young prince doesnt expect to hear his oldest borthers answer the call. They have Samara, and are coming for him. Kahlil knows that he cant stay there bcs his brothers will hurt all the ppl that are helping him, but Finn promises him that he will be safe there and protected, then takes him to his house and there they make love for the first time. This is Kahlil first time and Finn is gentle. The mating ends with a knot and that surprises the prince at start, but he likes it in the end.
For me the fact that they have sex so soon didnt make any sense. Most of the authors use the "mate" excuse to make their chars have sex only minutes after they met and most of the time results in an useless scene. Yeah, was cute and sweet and the author wants us to believe they are in love, but so unrealistic.....(more than the fact that they are wolves XD )
Anyway...
The mating is completed and now they can hear each other thoughs through the link. Finn only now explains to the prince that they are mates and Kahlil can finally understand why Finn bit him while they were having sex. Really? -__-
Finn tries to explain to him what being mates means, that for him and his wolf now there will not be anyone else and that the prince is part of his pack, but Kahlil tells him that he needs to meet some other human mate and talk to them to really understand. Soon after, Kahlil meets Zachary and his human mate Elijah. The other man explains to him that all is like Finn told him, that the wolves are faithfull and loyal and that now he is part of a bigger family that will protect him.
Later while Kahlil is talking with the Alpha, Finn finds out that his mate is a prince. He is surprised but can finally uderstand why his mate is so polite and well mannered.
When Kahlil leaves with Elijah for a tour of the town, Aiden, Zachary and Finn have time to discuss a plan. Aiden knows Kahlil's brothers and tells the others that they need to be carefull since these men not only punish being gay with a death sentence but also hate shifters. When the messanger of the pack,Langley, arrives with some letters for Finn, Aiden tells him to report to the Enforcers that they need to increase the security on the territory since there is a new treat incoming. While Finn watches his father and the young messanger talk, he understands that Aiden acts different with Langley. Later we will find out that the young man (half Aiden's age) is the Alpha's mate, and both are pining for the other without knowing. We still dont know where is Finn's mother and why his father never had other relationships for the last 22 years, pratically since Finn was born, despite being alone. (maybe we will understand in book 2)
A week later Samara arrives in town, and we dont know how she escaped...doesnt make any sense....but useless to say, Kahlil is happy to see her, since the female shifter is like a mother to him.
Samara tells the prince that his brothers are coming....a thing that we alredy knew..... The 2 men had tried a coup and failed and were exiled by their father.
(this town,Hidden Lake, they say has this name bcs is hard to find, but to me it seems that all can find it easily...bah)
Samara has a letter from the king to give to Kahlil. There the king explains that he will not take actions towards the shifters if something were to happen to his exiled sons, bcs he wants Kahlil to be safe. Ok this doesnt make any sense. He cares about them also after the coup, bcs he didnt kill them but exiled them, but then if some of the shifters were to kill one of them, he wouldnt care? We all understand that he loves Kahlil more but there is something called prison king u know.....(not that i cared about the 2 jerks...)
In only 2 weeks we see Kahlil change from a blushing and shy virgin to a confident and dominant bottom....Yeah right....
That night Finn and Kahlil make love again and the next morning when Finn wakes up he is alone in bed. No one has seen the prince. Few pages after we find out that he was kidnapped by his brothers. Kahlil man u know that they are coming for you and u decide to go walk in the woods alone? u deserve to be kidnapped.
Another thing i dont understand is why Kahlil's brothers dont kill him but decide to kidnap him instead. They said more than one time they would kill him and they do this... These bad guys sucks, they are pathetic. The finale seems rushed, done just bcs the book needed one.
Kahlil's brothers want him to beg for forgiveness and promise he will atone for his sins.... REALLY WTF COME ON!
To make this short. Kahlil fakes to agree and while he is bowing down,Finn and Samara attack. In the end one brother is dying and the other is badly hurt and decides to jump down the cliff carrying the other down with him.
In the epilogue we see Kahlil and Finn finally happy and building their house. The young prince is now the ambassador of the pack, Aiden's right hand. We also understand that Kahlil's brothers were shifters but they had suppressed their wolves so much they had become insane.
Finn and Kahlil gave each other a reason to live.
The book wasnt bad but it really missed feelings sometime and went too fast.

I found this to be a very sweet romance between, Kahlil (human) and Finn (wolf). The story held my interest and I enjoyed how the mating happened quite quickly (which I like) and then the deep feelings developed for each other through rough circumstances and time. The ending left me totally satisfied and I will definitely be reading the next book in the series. =)
Exiled because he is gay. Forced to leave his home or die by stoning. That is the choice forced upon Kahlil. He refused to be something he wasn’t and found himself alone and on the run because of it. But fate steps in when one least expects it. Kahlil’s brand new car breaks down among the mountains of Montana, luckily within walking distance of Hidden Lake. Kahlil avoids death by the elements when he meets Finn. Finn is the Alpha’s son and is surprised by his attraction to Kahlil. Can he convince Kahlil to stop running and that he is Safe and Sound not only within his arms but within his town? I really enjoyed this new series by Frey Ortega. Both Kahlil and Finn were young but handled their mating well. Kahlil was innocent of body but tested in mind while Finn was experienced in body but less aware of politics. Together they were able to learn from each other even as grew as a couple. Mr. Ortega blended these men who on the surface had little in common in such a way that their relationship had no clear dominant even though Finn was definitely an alpha. I enjoyed seeing both men bend and accept each other. This story was well written and I am looking forward to seeing what Mr. Ortega has in store for the other residents of Hidden Lake.
Kahlil has to flee his country or face death. The woman who he thinks of as a son, tells him to find Hidden Lake and he will be safe there. Finn never thought that he would find his mate on the way home one day. This is a story where the mate is found and is instantly wanted, however he fears his past will come to this paradise and hurt his mate and disrupt his new family. It is up to Finn to protect his mate no matter what. I love when playboy shifters find their mates. They fall the hardest and the fastest. I can't wait for the next book.
