Some books entertain you. Others quietly move into your head and refuse to leave.
After the Applause was that kind of book for me.
At first, I expected an action-packed superhero story. And while the action is there, that's not what made me fall in love with it. it's a story about people—flawed, funny, broken, hopeful people—trying to find their place in a world that has already decided who they should be.
Rook absolutely stole the show for me. He's sarcastic, stubborn, self-deprecating, and somehow still incredibly compassionate. The more I learned about him, the more I wanted to protect him... while simultaneously laughing at half the things that came out of his mouth. And the relationships? They feel genuine. They breathe. Every member of the cast has a purpose, and I found myself caring about all of them.
What surprised me most is that this isn't really a story about superpowers. It's about responsibility, found family, identity, sacrifice, and what happens when the people we're taught to admire aren't as heroic as they seem.
I laughed more than I expected. I got attached to people I didn't expect. There were moments that genuinely made me stop reading just so I could sit there and think about what I'd learned. Those are the stories I remember long after I've closed the book. This book understands that the strongest stories aren't built on abilities—they're built on relationships. On trust. On grief. On hope. On the quiet moments between the big ones.
By the end, I wasn't thinking about who had the coolest power.
I was thinking about who these people were... and hoping I'd get to spend more time with them.
That's probably the highest compliment I can give a book.
