A sweet read from Caplin that has “escapism” written all over it. This time, readers are transported to beautiful Portugal and I loved how vividly the setting is conveyed to readers. It was a captivating read that proved a great distraction from mundane life!
Rebecca’s new, summer job as a Pilates instructor at a hotel in the Algarve sounds like bliss. The stunning views (both countryside and her colleague) make it idyllic and it really seems like she has found her feet. Rebecca’s homelife hasn’t exactly been a constant stream of happiness and this summer job is an opportunity to leave behind negative memories and focus on herself, once and for all.
Except, she doesn’t anticipate falling for Felipe and the flirtatious banter between the characters from the beginning shows that this is going to complicate Rebecca’s summer. However, I loved the fact that she didn’t know what Felipe’s work was – inadvertently falling for her boss. I don’t think this relationship would have developed in the slightest if Rebecca knew what she was letting herself in for. On the other hand, when readers learn about why she was so keen to leave England behind, it makes her happiness even more significant and I was really rooting for these characters.
Rebecca’s stay in Portugal is full of energy. Not just because of her work, but also thanks to Felipe’s cheeky and sassy cousins. They are a whirlwind and I enjoyed how they added another layer to the story. Honestly, I think they would have driven me mad if I had to live with them, I liked how Caplin uses these characters to help bring Rebecca’s happy ending. Not only that, they come to represent how the hotel is a family business and that everyone has to do their fair share of work. As Rebecca’s exercise classes grow in popularity, it represents her being welcomed and feeling like she belongs – at long last.
Yet, it’s not all smooth sailing and wonderful Portugal descriptions. When someone from home arrives at the hotel, Rebecca’s world is sent in a tailspin. I liked seeing how Rebecca would manage her feelings but I was curious whether she would finally realise the importance of her own self-happiness, rather than indulging in others around her first.
Full of sun, sea and beautiful coastlines, this book takes readers to a gorgeous hotel in Portugal. It’s a shame it’s fiction, because I would certainly check in, book myself in for one of Rebecca’s classes, and have a drink or two with Felipe!

Este livro foi um cliché mas soube muito bem lê-lo no Algarve. É um livro sem muitos dramas e fácil de ler, tocou-me no coração por ser super leve, aconchegante e retratar tão bem a cultura e comida portuguesa! Ótimo para ler nas férias

"Das kleine Landhotel in Portugal" von Julie Caplin ist ein romantischer Unterhaltungsroman, der eine kurzweilige Flucht in die malerische Landschaft Portugals bietet. Die Geschichte dreht sich um Rebecca, die in einem charmanten Hotel neue Perspektiven und zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen entdeckt.
Die Figuren wirken oft stereotyp und lassen wenig Raum für tiefere Emotionen oder Entwicklungen, die Handlung folgt weitgehend vorhersehbaren Klischees der Romantik, was die Spannung minimiert.

Toto bolo naozaj príjemné predĺženie leta. Veľmi som im závidela to teplo, slnko, piesok a pláž. Skoro som sa vrátila späť na dovolenku.

Kao što je i bilo za očekivati ovo je lagano ljetno štivo, romantika, lijepa atmosfera i, naravno, još jedna prekrasna lokacija.
Ipak, ono što mi se posebno svidjelo je što je priča prema kraju dobila malo više dubine. Zadnjih stotinjak stranica mi je zbog toga ostavilo puno bolji dojam nego da je sve ostalo samo na laganoj romantičnoj priči. I dalje je to lagano štivo, ali ta ( na trenutke ) doza dubine svakako poboljša cijelu priču.
I je se to meni čini ili je Julie počela malo otvorenije pisati, odnosno ubacivati smut scene? 😂 U nekoliko njezinih knjiga koje sam čitala prije ove činilo mi se da toga nije bilo, odnosno da se sve više vrtjelo oko same romantike. Ovdje mi se učinilo da je po tom pitanju ipak malo otvorenija i to mi je super jer daje onaj dodatni touch.
Moram priznati da mi Julie Caplin uglavnom nije među boljim autoricama ovog žanra, ali ima dvije stvari koje joj totalno idu u korist:
- naslovnice su joj predivne
- i svaka je knjiga smještena u neki drugi grad
Upravo zbog toga i dalje volim čitati njezine knjige jer uvijek dobiješ neku novu destinaciju i onaj osjećaj putovanja kroz knjigu.

If been looking forward to another in this series but this one fell flat for me. The romance came too fast and there was so little of the description around the Portuguese culture and scenery that I loved so much in the others.

I love this series, and this was another fab book from Julie Caplin, one of my favourite authors.
It’s set in Portugal, on the Algarve, as Rebecca the main character gets a job at a family run hotel, as a Pilates instructor. The hotel and location sounded gorgeous and made me feel like I’d been transported there along with Rebecca.
I loved Rebecca right from the start, she’s a strong independent woman who doesn’t need a man to rescue her, or rely on her. She’s nursing a broken heart because of Will, the man she’s secretly loved for years. He definitely hasn’t felt the same way about her, and has gone off with someone else. Then she meets Felipe at the hotel, and the chemistry between them is so good straight from the start, that she almost forgets about Will.
I loved following Rebecca as she settled into her routine at the hotel, with Felipe and his family. It was a really lovely story, seeing her try all the different foods, she wouldn’t normally eat and having fun as Felipe’s young cousins, Katerina and Cristina give her fashion tips.
The romance between her and Felipe, was fun and flirty with a bit of spice. It felt very natural, and I really wanted it all to work out for them.
Of course because it’s a romance it wasn’t plain sailing, but I was quite surprised with the plot development, and annoyed for Rebecca and Felipe, especially Felipe! I was shouting in my head at both of them, to open their eyes and stop what was about to happen! I can’t say any more because of spoilers!
If you’re looking for a fun, flirty romance, I definitely recommend this one. In fact as usual I recommend the whole Romantic Escapes series!

Okay, this is a tough one for me to review. The setting (Portugal) and the descriptions of food were fantastic and probably 5 stars. I liked Felipe's family and their interactions with both him and Rebecca. However, for at least the first third of the book I felt nothing regarding the interactions/romance between Felipe and Rebecca. Then, when Will appears (the man Rebecca has been in love with for years and whom she has catered to every whim for years)? UGH! It was so obvious he was using Rebecca, didn't see Rebecca for what she was.
The ending was nice, and it's clear we have our next heroine and most likely a story set in Paris. I'll read it, but this one for the most part was just mediocre. So this is a half-hearted, 3 stars, very close to just 2 stars.

Este livro, o novo de Julie Caplin, foi uma leitura agradável, mas que acabou por não me conquistar tanto quanto esperava.
Um dos aspetos de que mais gostei foi, sem dúvida, o cenário. Foi impossível não sorrir ao reconhecer locais, referências e ambientes tão familiares. Ler uma história passada em Portugal, e em particular no Algarve, trouxe um charme especial à leitura e tornou tudo mais próximo.
A história acompanha personagens que procuram recomeços, novas oportunidades e respostas para questões que carregam há algum tempo. Existe uma dinâmica leve entre elas e alguns momentos ternurentos, mas senti dificuldade em criar uma ligação emocional mais profunda.
A protagonista é fácil de acompanhar e a sua evolução ao longo da história faz sentido, mas senti que tudo acontecia de forma demasiado segura. Faltou-me alguma intensidade emocional, mais conflito ou momentos que me fizessem sentir verdadeiramente investida no percurso das personagens.
A escrita da Julie Caplin continua a ser leve, fluida e muito visual. Tem uma enorme capacidade para transportar o leitor para os cenários que cria, fazendo-nos quase sentir o sol, os aromas e a atmosfera dos lugares por onde as personagens passam. No entanto, desta vez, senti que o ambiente acabou por se destacar mais do que a própria história.
A capa merece também uma menção especial. É impossível ficar indiferente às suas cores vibrantes e à energia que transmite. Captou na perfeição o espírito leve e solarengo da história e tornou a experiência de leitura mais leve.
No final, foi uma leitura confortável e agradável, mas também um pouco morna. Gostei da viagem, gostei do cenário, gostei da experiência... só não me apaixonei pela história da forma que esperava.
No entanto, embora não tenha sido uma das minhas leituras preferidas, acho que muitos de vocês vão gostar imenso.

Přesně takový je Penzion v Portugalsku od Julie Caplinové. 🇵🇹🌊
Pokud máte rádi sérii Romantické útěky, dostanete přesně to, co od ní očekáváte – sympatické hrdiny, romantiku, nádherné prostředí a několik hodin příjemného odpočinku. Ano, děj je poměrně předvídatelný a nechybí ani klasické romantické klišé. Jenže právě to je na těchto příbězích vlastně příjemné. Někdy člověk prostě nechce řešit složité zápletky, ale jen na chvíli vypnout a nechat se přenést na slunné portugalské pobřeží.
🎧 Audioknihu opět načetla Veronika Lazorčáková, jejíž hlas už podle mě k celé sérii neodmyslitelně patří. Její klidný projev krásně podtrhuje pohodovou atmosféru příběhu a dělá z poslechu příjemného společníka na cesty autem, při domácích pracích nebo během letních procházek.

Pessimamente mal escrito, mas entreteve os meus dias de praia. Apesar da qualidade não ser a melhor, devolveu-me a vontade de ler.

Foi uma leitura agradável mas não fiquei completamente rendida. Não me conquistou...
Gostei muito das descrições dos lugares e fiquei agradavelmente surpreendida com as descrições da gastronomia portuguesa. Mas depois faltou qualquer coisa.
Os protagonistas Rebecca e Felipe embora fossem adoráveis, achei-os um pouco básicos enquanto personagens e muito inseguros e indecisos. Acho que faltou muita profundidade à história e às personagens.
Como sempre a autora tem uma escrita muito fluida, mas desta vez faltou-me mais emoção.

Ďalšia kniha zo série Romantické úteky a tentoraz sa presúvame do Portugalska. Stretávame sa s Rebeccou, ktorá sa rozhodne utiecť do Portugalska po tom, čo roky milovala Willa. (Inak je tu aj trochu voľné prepojenie na predchádzajúcu knihu Hostinec v Prahe). Tam stretáva očarujúceho a nespútaného Felipeho Rebela. Rebecca mi bola sympatická, milá a dalo sa s ňou ľahko stotožniť. Veľmi sa mi páčilo, ako sa jej postava v knihe postupne vyvíjala – objavovala sama seba a to, čo vlastne chce od života. Felipe bol pre mňa veľmi príjemným a osviežujúcim spestrením. Páčilo sa mi, ako bol napísaný – nespútaný, uvoľnený a presne taký človek, akého by asi každá žena chcela stretnúť, keď sa vyberie do zahraničia za dobrodružstvom. 😄 Ich fungovanie od začiatku pôsobilo veľmi prirodzene a ľahko. Bavilo ma ich doberanie a celkovo energia medzi nimi.

Rebecca was likeable, sweet, and easy to relate to. I really liked how her character gradually developed throughout the book—she was discovering herself and what she actually wants in life.
Felipe was a very pleasant and refreshing touch for me. I loved how he was written—unfiltered, laid-back, and exactly the kind of guy every woman would want to meet when going abroad for an adventure. 😄 Their dynamic felt very natural and effortless right from the start. I really enjoyed their teasing and the overall energy between them.
I liked the romantic plotline, and most of all, I'm glad the author avoided any major drama. I believed in their relationship and loved watching it gradually unfold. I don't want to spoil too much, though. 😄
The setting itself was also lovely. In the family hotel, I could easily picture the Portuguese vibe—the pool, the Mediterranean atmosphere, the proximity to the sea, and that overall holiday feel. However, I felt Portugal much more in the parts set in Lisbon. I thought those were beautifully described, at times in such a charmingly touristy way that I felt like going there immediately.
I also grew fond of the secondary characters, especially Felipe's two nieces, Cristina and Katerina. The only thing that felt like a broken record to me was the classic "I'm not like other girls" trope. A girl who doesn't know how to dress, doesn't wear makeup, doesn't care about fashion, yet is, of course, amazing anyway. 😄 I think this is a bit of a cliché by now.
Will was an interesting part of the story for me, though I felt like his character's purpose wasn't fully wrapped up. I missed a bit more understanding of where his arc was heading and why he was in the story in that particular way.
Despite that, I really enjoyed reading the book. It had a pleasant pace, and I didn't find any dull or unnecessarily drawn-out passages. What I enjoyed most was its lightness, the summer atmosphere, and the energy between Rebecca and Felipe.
Overall, I think it's exactly the kind of book you want to take on vacation or read on a hot summer day when you want to relax, get into a good mood, and just enjoy a cozy read. And that's exactly the vibe The Hotel by the sea gave me. 😄🍋🐚
Ďalšia kniha zo série Romantické úteky a tentoraz sa presúvame do Portugalska. Stretávame sa s Rebeccou, ktorá sa rozhodne utiecť do Portugalska po tom, čo roky milovala Willa. Em Uma pousada no Algarve conhecemos Rebecca, que depois de uma grande desilusão amorosa decide afastar-se de tudo e aceitar um trabalho durante o verão numa pousada familiar no Algarve.
Ali, entre novas ligações, momentos inesperados e o encanto do sul de Portugal, começa a reconstruir-se e a perceber que esta viagem não é apenas sobre mudar de lugar, mas também sobre voltar a escolher-se a si mesma.
É uma história sobre recomeços e sobre recordar que o amor não nos deve fazer sentir pequenos.
🫶 O que mais gostei ⬇️
O que mais gostei foi da ambientação. A autora conseguiu fazer-me visualizar muito bem os cenários, especialmente os do Algarve, e isso fez com que a leitura tivesse um ar muito quente, luminoso e veranil.
Também gostei imenso de encontrar tantas referências à cultura portuguesa: comidas tradicionais, vinhos, monumentos, refeições em família, costumes e pequenos detalhes do dia a dia. Sinto que é um livro bonito para aproximar um pouco Portugal de pessoas de outros países, e fez-me muita ilusão ler uma história ambientada no país onde nasci.
Além disso, quando era mais nova, passava muitas férias de verão em família no Algarve, por isso houve partes que me transportaram diretamente para essas memórias. Nesse sentido, foi uma leitura muito especial para mim.
Outro detalhe que achei muito curioso é que a Quinta do Mar é inspirada num hotel que existe realmente, o que faz com que a ambientação se sinta ainda mais próxima.
Também valorizei o facto de o livro falar de amor-próprio, autoestima, sonhos pessoais e da importância de não nos anularmos por amor.
A escrita pareceu-me simples, fluida e muito fácil de ler, por isso avancei bastante rápido.
😔 O que menos gostei ⬇️
Apesar de ter sido uma leitura agradável, não senti que fosse uma história daquelas que nos arrebatam o coração ou que ficam connosco durante muito tempo.
A parte romântica pareceu-me demasiado rápida. Gostava que a ligação entre as personagens se tivesse desenvolvido com mais calma, porque acho que assim teria sido mais fácil envolver-me emocionalmente com elas.
Também notei vários erros na tradução, e isso às vezes tirou-me um pouco da história. Deu-me a sensação de que a tradução foi feita à pressa e de que não passou por uma revisão cuidada.
Por fim, há uma pequena parte que se passa em Lisboa. Gostei de reconhecer lugares que conheço e acho que essa parte é muito rica no que diz respeito a dar a conhecer a história e a cultura de Portugal, algo que me pareceu super interessante. Ainda assim, teria preferido que todo o livro se mantivesse no Algarve.

Es una historia sobre nuevos comienzos y sobre recordar que el amor no debería hacernos sentir pequeños.

Lo que más me gustó fue la ambientación. La autora consiguió que visualizara muy bien los escenarios, especialmente los del Algarve, y eso hizo que la lectura tuviera un aire muy cálido, luminoso y veraniego.
También me gustó muchísimo encontrar tantas referencias a la cultura portuguesa: comidas tradicionales, vinos, monumentos, comidas en familia, costumbres y pequeños detalles del día a día. Siento que es un libro bonito para acercar un poquito Portugal a personas de otros países, y me hizo mucha ilusión leer una historia ambientada en el país donde nací.
Además, cuando era más joven, pasaba muchas vacaciones de verano en familia en el Algarve, así que hubo partes que me transportaron directamente a esos recuerdos. En ese sentido, fue una lectura muy especial para mí.
Otro detalle que me pareció muy curioso es que la Quinta do Mar está inspirada en un hotel que existe de verdad, lo que hace que la ambientación se sienta todavía más cercana.
También valoré que el libro hable de amor propio, autoestima, sueños personales y de la importancia de no anularnos por amor.
La escritura me pareció sencilla, fluida y muy fácil de leer, así que avancé bastante rápido.

Aunque fue una lectura agradable, no sentí que fuera una historia de esas que te arrebatan el corazón o que se quedan contigo durante mucho tiempo.
La parte romántica me pareció demasiado rápida. Me habría gustado que la conexión entre los personajes se hubiera desarrollado con más calma, porque creo que así habría sido más fácil implicarme emocionalmente con ellos.
También noté varios errores en la traducción, y eso a veces me sacó un poco de la historia. Me dio la sensación de que la traducción se hizo con prisa y de que no pasó por una revisión cuidada.
Por último, hay una pequeña parte que transcurre en Lisboa. Me gustó reconocer lugares que conozco y creo que esa parte es muy rica a la hora de dar a conocer la historia y la cultura de Portugal, algo que me pareció súper interesante. Aun así, habría preferido que toda la novela se mantuviera en el Algarve.

Q: Boli ste už v Portugalsku?
Ak nie, Julie Caplin vás doňho zavedie, alebo aspoň naladí na jeho návštevu. Keďže je to už trinásta autorkina kniha zo série Romantické úteky, tak už presne viem, čo by som od knihy mohla očakávať a prečo sa k autorke neustále vraciam. Nie je to romantická linka, ako by sa možno očakávalo už od samotného názvu celej série. Ja jej knihy beriem cestopisne. Milujem jej dokonalé opisy krajiny a gastro ponuky. Jej knihy sú prevoňané dobrým jedlom atmosféry danej krajiny. Rovnako to bolo aj v tejto knihe. Vo vzduchu bolo cítiť more, na ppkožke slnko a na jazyku sa mi rozplýval Pastel de Nata.
Slnečné pobrežie samozrejme neskrývalo len pozitívne zážitky, ale hlavná hrdinka sa vysporiadavala so sklamaním v láske a aká by to bola Caplinovka, ak by sa v nej neobjavil charizmatický fešák, ktorý zranenú dušičku vylieči. Ich romantická linka bola jemná a prirodzená a rozvíjajúci sa vzťah vďaka tomu uveriteľný. Veľmi sa mi páčilo jeho rodinné zázemie, ktoré dodali príbehu opäť niečo nové popri jasnom smerovaní deja, keďže povedzme si otvorene, autorkine knihy majú svoju schému, ktorej sa drží a dej je predvídateľný.
Kniha je skvelou rozlúčkou s letom, ak ste ju nestihli vziať na dovolenku ako ja :) Autorku vyhľadávam, ak potrebujem nie len čitateľský, ale aj psychický reset. Dokonale si oddýchnem pri nenáročnom čítaní, ale zároveň sa nenudím, lebo autorka píše svižne a zaujímavo a kniha stále rýchlo zmizne pod rukami a očami zároveň. Navyše sú jej knihy estetickým skvostom a táto so špeciálnou oriezkou dvojnásobne. Dýcha letom, dýcha pokojom, morom a pozitívnou energiou. Patrí rozhodne k jedným z najvydarenejších kníh zo série.

Este livro foi, para mim, aquele tipo de leitura que sabe a férias. Entre paisagens algarvias, comida deliciosa, romance e aquele ambiente de verão que nos faz querer pegar numa mala e ir diretamente para o Algarve, foi impossível não entrar no mood da história.
Gostei bastante da atmosfera do livro que, apesar de um pouco clichê, tornou-se a leitura perfeita para o fim do verão. Foi o primeiro livro que li da Julie e sinto que a autora tem mesmo jeito para criar cenários que parecem uma escapadinha de férias. E, sendo uma história passada no Algarve, foi ainda mais divertido reconhecer alguns dos lugares e sentir aquela familiaridade.
Gostei da forma como a cultura portuguesa é retratada e de todo o ambiente. Senti apenas que o romance se desenvolveu um pouco rápido demais (para o meu gosto de slowburn reader claro!) Também tive alguns momentos em que senti que estava à espera de que a história avançasse mais.
Ainda assim, foi uma leitura leve, confortável e perfeita para quem procura um romance sobre viagens, comida e uma boa dose de verão (aproveitar os últimos momentos e acabar o verão em grande!) Não foi um favorito, mas foi definitivamente uma leitura agradável.

My Opinion
The Hotel by the Sea is the thirteenth book in the Romantic Escapes series but it can easily be read as a standalone. With a lovely setting and some charming characters this was a delightful novel. Julie Caplin has written an uplifting novel that was difficult to put down.

When the man Rebecca has loved for years runs off with someone else, she decides it's time for a fresh start and takes a temporary job at the family fun Quinta do Mar resort as the Pilates instructor She's ready to clear her mind and her heart. What she's not ready for is Felipe. Felipe is gorgeous and funny and seems to have it altogether but undemeath it all is a man whose life is heavy and he needs to rest. The last thing he needs is someone who chalks him ike Rebecca does. As Rebecca settles into life at the resort. the romance between her and Felipe slowly develops but their friendship grows first. He has her trying new foods and seeing new things and forgettall about the man who broke her heart.
This is part of a series but I haven’t read all the books in the series and I had no trouble reading this one. The setting was stunning, the food sounded amazing and Felipe's family were fun to get to know.

**The Hotel by the Sea** was a lovely bit of escapism and exactly the kind of easy beach read I was in the mood for.
I was drawn in by the setting, the hotel sounds absolutely lush, tucked away in a romantic, quintessential seaside location that makes you want to escape there yourself. There’s family, home, fun, connection, and, of course, the perfect man… all the ingredients for a feel-good getaway.
I also liked the idea of a different kind of penance, with the story beginning with a connection and gradually developing into finding love. It made for an enjoyable journey, even if I didn’t find the story particularly memorable.
This was an easy, uncomplicated read that transported me to a sunny and romantic location for a while. Nothing especially special, but a solid escape from a great author.
I’ve read a few of Julie Caplin s books now, and while this isn’t my favourite of hers, it was still a pleasant, relaxing read. Perfect for the beach, a holiday, or when you simply want to disappear into a romantic seaside setting for a few hours.

The Hotel by the Sea is a good addition to the Romantic Escapes series by Julie Caplin and can easily be read as a standalone.. This installment offers a wonderful sense of armchair travel, providing a vivid escape to the coast of Portugal through its atmospheric descriptions and local charm.
While the setting is beautifully realised and the story maintains the signature warmth of the series, it did not grab me quite as much as some of her previous escapes have. It is a pleasant and easy read, but the narrative didn't feel as compelling as other books in the collection. Overall, it is a lovely way to spend a few hours in the sun, even if it doesn't rank as a personal favorite among the author's work.

A sweet escape to Portugal and a return to the Romantic Escape series from Julie Caplan. I’ve read all of this series. Hotel by the Sea is a stand out. Our main characters Rebecca and Felipe have a fun connection that deepened in a realistic way. If you are in need of a feel good escape, this book is a great choice. Caplin set up the next novel with one of the mmc’s sister!
